  • I show you ALL the basics you need to know to join 2 pieces of wood or 2 panels.
you can even use this techniqueto join multiple piece and even join a corner.....
I thought id do this video for anyone whos looking take large size panels or upcycle their offcuts etc to make larger panels.....
I personally would not make any carcass or join any pieces of wood/panel without some form of connector/locator, its just not the right way of doing things!
In this case we are using the Makita pj7000 Biscuiter or Biscuit Jointer.
You can Also you a Festool Domino machine (df 500).
We also use the trend pocket hole jig, which gives the kreg products a run for their money!
I find using a Biscuiter, perfect for carcasses and most wood working applications.
Domino's have their uses but i find them more useful in furniture applications ect and dont see the need to use them on carcasses.
Both the Biscuiter and biscuits are CONSIDERABLY CHEAPER than the domino machine and domino's.
In this video, I show you ALL the basics you need to know to machine biscuit slots, and drill your pocket screw holes to make any carcass or panel, whether its a wardrobe, bookshelf, window seat or alcove unit etc...
I also run through all the information, making it easy to understand, including all measurements and design processes you may need to know.
    I hope you enjoy
    Ryan

I was looking to avoid buying a whole 4’x8’ sheet of plywood to make a crawl space door. This was perfect for using 2 scrap pieces. Thanks and well done

I can see the principle, but that MDF is quite thick. Mine is only 6mm thick, so there's not much surface for a butt joint. I need a really thin panel to place down on the carpet in front of my workstation, so that the office chair will glide easily instead of sinking into the carpet.
*Update:* Yesterday I glued two 1200mm x 600mm 6mm sheets if MDF edge to edge. The material is too thin for dowels, biscuits or pocket hole screws, so I just used a good quality white PVA wood glue. I applied two home-made cauls (long pieces of wood) with clamps along the edges and clamped the join tight after applying the glue. I left it overnight and this morning the joint is surprisingly strong with only the glue. I put down a large sheet of newspaper first, underneath the sheets, so that squeezed out glue wouldn't stick to the workbench. I was going (today) to glue a reinforcing strip on each side, but I don't think it's necessary any longer, as I was able to manhandle the now rather large sheet (1200mm x 1200mm) upstairs without any sign of the joint failing.

Thats pretty good the joint hasnt broken.
Although I would like it to last for you, I dont think it will stand the chair rolling over it time and time again.
Imm not sure what else you could do other than buy a full size sheet.
But fingers crossed it holds for you :-)
      Cheers Ryan

@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Yes, I thought later that I could have got the timber merchant to cut me a 1200mm x 1200mm sheet, but I don't think it would fit inside my small hatchback and delivery over 15 miles would cost a fair bit. I've used wood glue on numerous projects over the years, including with MDF without failure, but not a butt joint on 6mm before. We will just hope for the best for now! I did apply the glue very liberally and really forced the two edges as tightly as possible together.

@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop Thing is, I didn't think about the finished size! There I was, merrily gluing two sheets together. But next morning, after I removed the clamps and cauls and gingerly tested the result, I suddenly realised just how heavy and unwieldy the whole panel was. I had to move several items of furniture just to manhandle it from my small work room, across the kitchen and up the stairs. The stairs were the most challenging! No worries. It's done now and I am one happy bunny!

Very good video on how to edge joint plywood. I've got a ton of cut offs and was wondering the best method to join them well..

A better solution could be a full width biscuit.. as in rip your own material at the biscuit width (from memory I think that’s 4mm) then the whole length is joined and aligned (biscuits are for aligning not for joining after all)
This is one reason why people will use a domino not a biscuit because a domino is a tenon joint not just an aligner.
You could also use a 10x6 sheet instead of an 8x4 .. I believe they’re 1500 odd wide..

  • @theofarmmanager267

Very good explanation. If I may suggest: the biscuits (or dominoes) primarily align the pieces and contribute perhaps 15% to the actual strength of the joint. The pocket screws primarily act as clamps drawing the pieces together and, again, contribute something to the strength of the join. The majority by far of the strength of the join comes from the chemical join - the adhesive. Spread it over both mating surfaces as well the biscuits and the slots and wait for the full curing time.
If you do something similar and, after curing, take out the screws themselves, you should see how strong the joint is without them.

Thanks. Yes I guess they all play a part. The Glue probably plays the biggest part, but I'd say don't underestimate a pocket screw, they are tougher than you think.

@@thelondoncraftsmanworkshop i agree. I think pocket screws are extremely useful - and, as you say, strong. I feel that, when using something like MDF (I know you were using ply) that the weakness of the pocket screw joint is the material you are joining. Buy only good quality MDF - I buy Medite MR no matter what amd wouldn’t touch the big box stuff - and your chances of failure diminish. Use that compressed cardboard junk and you take a chance on saving a few pounds on materials but junking the thing you are making.

could you use dowels instead of biscuits? Im trying to male a 5’5’ board. the largest size sold in the US is 4’. so i was thinking of doing two 2.5 boards and dowels in between and pocket holes like you did. its a support for a painting thats will be hanging in a “pub”/bar

Terrible camera work. Try keep the camera more still, rather than continuously moving it around. And then mive closer only when you need to show detail.
As of now the movement has given me a headache....
