Cool just bought it. Drives me mad that you can’t rotate like this in Blender. Also am really excited for any sketchup based features coming over to Blender.
Thanks for the purchase. Definitely with you on the rotations. I just had to do something about it! New version (0.9.51) is coming out in the next few days which address a few bugs and also when drawing circles or arcs, they will now auto-rotate to the face you're drawing on (so you're not limited to X,Y,Z) directions anymore. Lot's more to come soon.
@@dndrawings Excellente work! i will purchase too! make a lot easier transition to blender from sketchup!..... another great add on could be to snap to the middle of an edge!
Thank you for the great addon. Measurements on the construction line that can then be clicked to change would be phenomenal. An intersection between construction line and edge, I would also like to see.
I've decided now to keep developing it, so no plans to retire it. Blender devs haven't updated the Extrude Manifold tool in the last couple of releases, so I'll push on with developing my own extrude. There's a new version of CL out by the way (0.9.6) and a release video for that on my channel.
@@dndrawings They should hire you or buy out your addon. Better, you keep going as a great contribution to the Blender Community, I appreciate your efforts.
i will be buying it. I've wanted to use blender for cad for a year or more - but it just does not cut it for cad work....If would be interesting to have an add-on that allows the production of pdf vector documents for publishing 3d models and architectural design solutions.
Thanks for the comment. I think CL is moving closer and closer to enabling a full switch from some other CAD software like SketchUp for modelling but as you note there is a real lack of document output options. This is going to be my next add-on. Some sections are already in the works but I need to focus on CL fully at the moment to get out a stable release with all the functions that I think it needs. After that, I'll be splitting my development time between the two.
@@dndrawings = 'document output options.' are the key to uptake for small offices. I don't know if you have used sketchup Layout much - nut it is fine for documenting a table .. but for large jobs ( like a house) it becomes completely unwieldy. I hope you can get a tech pathway to scaled drawings on international paper with notes and dimensions - line drawings, shaded modes and standard views. If you want feedback or someone to test out a workflow - don't hesitate to ask :)
@@MichaelFlynn0 Not sure why this didn't show up in the main comment feed. Completely agree with you. I use Layout all the time and for larger projects it becomes unusable. I've waited 10-20mins before just for the model to refresh in the drawings. To move away from SU completely I need to implement some way of presenting/outputting scaled drawings with multiple views and measurements. I'll definitely be in touch once it's started. Thanks for the offer.
Hi Mark, are you in edit mode (select or hover over the rectangle and press Tab)? If you still have issues contact me through the feedback form and I'll work out what's going on. Just a note on this, when adding a rectangle or circle it currently keeps you in Object mode, when it should auto enter Edit mode. This will be fixed in the next version.
Blender 2.93 had some internal changes that broke Construction Lines 0.9.5. However, I have a new release out this week that is fully compatible with Blender 2.93. It also comes with a whole host of new features and fixes. I'm working on the release video today and it should be released by Friday.
Are you using it on Blender 2.93? If so, it's not yet supported. There were some API changes that cause issues. The coming release 0.9.6 will be fully supported and should be out next week. For now, you can run CL on Blender 2.92
Thanks for this incredible addon and very helpful video! 100% agree with comment below re editable measurements on construction lines themselves, that would be huge. Another suggestion: a free-rotate, or "align" option, so that one could rotate an object in space so that an edge aligns with that of another object, i.e. not being limited to XYZ rotations. The only issue I run into periodically is the toolbar seems to freeze; I can't switch tools or close it out.. just have to restart Blender. Thanks again! Really amazing addition!
Thanks, Fred! I'm working on editable Construction Lines at the moment so a version of it should be in the next release. I'll look into your free-rotate suggestion as it might be quite straightforward to implement (thanks for the idea). I've fixed a lot of bugs in the upcoming release, some of which have definitely been responsible for causing the toolbar to stop working. So hopefully this is all fixed in the next version. There's a lot of new features and changes coming up (auto duplication of objects and geometry, select and move/duplicate Edit mode geometry, delete (objects, construction lines and Edit mode geometry), measurements now shown in the viewport whilst you're drawing (no longer in the top bar), measurements persistently shown on construction lines and many more bug fixes and new features) so I'll post a video on here once it's released.
@@dndrawings Thanks for the response, this all sounds fantastic and I really look forward to it. If you do decide to look into this rotate/align idea, I'd highly suggest taking a look at the "align" command in Autocad, which is one of the indispensable ones in that program. It allows you to select 2 points on one object, then 2 points on another object to which you want your first object to "jump". You then have the crucial option to have your first object also SCALE to those two points or not. Really useful and often used tool in that program. Thanks again for this add-on, really brilliant. This brings Blender closer to being an all-in-one program for me for many more uses.
@@fredozamas I think Rhino has a similar function called Orient. I really like the idea of being able to scale at the same time. I can imagine that that would be a massive timesaver. Thanks. I'm really looking forward to putting out the next release.
I'm going to get rid of the messages and dimensions from the topbar soon (as mentioned), which will then allow you to set to wireframe shading from within CL. This will mean that geometry at the back can be snapped to. I see your point on the selection box though, so I'll look into that. Thanks for pointing it out.
Thank you for the update! I really appreciated the cutting trugh things but, circle doesn't work on face and i can't set the segment for it and arc, however very nice job! thank you again!
Thanks for the comment. Circles should work on faces when you're in Edit mode. If you hold Ctrl and use the mouse wheel, segments will change, you can also use the arrow keys.
This is by far the most useful add-on for Blender. Thank You very much for Your continued work on it! The issues I have are rather minor, but annoying nonetheless (using Blender 2.91 and 2.92 for Mac): 1) I'm unable to undo/redo until I switch construction lines off; 2) needing to press the letter for axis (X or Y, or Z) then ALT to get a guide parallel to an edge is a lot of extra steps! I'd prefer to have it context aware, If I'm drawing a guide from an edge it's 99% going to be a parallel guide, so that should be the default or at least it could be an option in plugin settings to make parallel guides the default. A parallel guide could also snap to a parallel axis. So if I'm dragging the guide from an edge horizontally it should not shift in vertical position while dragging, but should stay on the same horizontal plane without need to affix it with SHIFT and then ALT; 3) needing to press ENTER to set a distance for the guide is also an annoying extra step. There is no need to press enter to type in exact distance in AutoCAD or SketchUp, or Fusion 360. 4) if I create a rectangle on face of an existing cube, I'm unable to select it until I switch off construction lines; 5) for the above reason I'm unable to use Extrude in Blender 2.91 or 2.92 as shown in the video, can't make a hole or extrude outwards.
Hello, great add on for us architects :) so thank you! Question, I'm having trouble getting the "guide" lines to work when selecting edges. Im still getting the 2 point construction line and not the horizontal line like you described. Is there something I'm missing?
Hi, thanks for the comment and I'm really pleased that you like the add-on. To switch to horizontal guides tap the Alt key, which toggles between the two guide modes. I've a patch release coming out very soon to fix a couple of bugs and add some new features but for the version after that, I'll set a default for guides to be in horizontal mode if dragging from an edge.
