  • In this video, we take the first steps toward restoring some old Jeep CJ7 Fenders. We use some BIX Paint Stripper and some Kwik Strip Paint Stripper to attempt our fate and process for taking off some very old paint.
    Project Rowdy is a restoration on a 1979 Jeep CJ7.

    Thanks for another great video. Your country needs your videos to entertain the masses during this time of lockdown. LOL! I always look forward to the next one. Stay safe Mike.

    I didn't have much luck with liquid stripper Mike. Ended up using poly carbide disks from Lowes. Worked like a charm. Stay safe!

      Thanks Jeff. Apparently the formula for strippers has changed recently making them a little less effective. The work on my fenders was done over 5 different days. Crazy... Go Dawgs!

    In one of your videos you mentioned you had a pot blaster. Why not blast the fenders and tub, saves time and money. If your worries about cost of media place plastic down and create a small booth. I did many motorcycles and an old Ford SD Dump this way. After blasting coat in 2k high build primer but use as a sealer to reduce rust. when you are ready to prep for paint use high build primer for small imperfections sand and repeat until desired surface achieved. When you use stripper you have to be sure you have removed all traces. it can appear later in the process. good luck. enjoyed your videos of the project

      Thought I had replied to you a couple of days ago, but I don't see it now. Pot Blasting is a lot of work and I thought the paint stripper would be easier. Today's Paint Strippers appear to be diluted and still a lot of work in their self. When I get the Tub off the frame, I will probably give the Pot Blaster another try. This should be coming up soon. Cheers! Mike

      It is a lot more work than I thought it would be. Yea... the Black fender is really nice. i do have a few spot welds to correct, but the metal is mint!

      UCanDoIt2 yes I’ve used many many gallons of the good old stuff and really is a game changer because I try and avoid blasting.

    Almost makes me wonder if it was painted with Imron at some point. That stuff is tough.

      Some of the layers on that Black Fender were tough. Just crazy! Cheers

    Hey Mike... First: the title of the video was misleading. I expected the other kind of strippers (joking!!!) Like others mentioned: plastic over the chemical works well. Also, the "Kleen Strip" brand is prob the best out there but also the most $$. Heads up, make sure you wash wash and wash after using the chemicals. I had a few problems with primer adhesion that I eventually blamed on the stripper, this was most common along the body lines and seams. Keep it up my man, slow and steady wins the race.

      Thank you for the advice on the multiple "wash". That is the kind of stuff I need to know about. Great information... Thanks Mike

    Hi Mike,,happy to see your posting videos today on project Rowdy. Here’s a tip on using paint stripper I got from a great RUclips channel called “Old Car Ally”. After applying your paint stripper cover your fenders with clear plastic and let it sit. Not sure for how long,,,but when you pull the plastic it will come off like butter. You can see this method being done on a 65 Ford galaxy in the mentioned channel above. I will try to find the name of the episode for you. Cheers 🥂!!

      Old Car Ally episode 76. It’s a 66 Ford Galaxy. My apologies. Enjoy your project and hoping everyone in your family is staying safe and healthy. Cheers 🍻!!!!

      I thought I had seen something like that as well. It kind of makes sense. I still have a Hood that will need to be stripped, so I can give that a try down the road. It was interesting that some layers were stubborn and some just melted. The clear plastic would definitely help keeping it wet, which is required. Cheers!

    You had much better luck that I did! This stuff was useless on my Camaro. Maybe I was not as patient as you were. We tried pretty hard on the hood, but it got to a point where it just did not do anymore. How about how clean that metal on that first fender was though? Nice! Hardly any filler.

      I made comment in this video and several times when talking to friends that referenced my perception of your project (Hood Stripping). In your video (and others), it appears to be Apply, Scrape, Wash... and Wallah! Mine experience was a pain in the butt. It took about 6-7 coats. The first one and the last two did the most cleanup. It is my understanding that they have changed formula and have weakened the product. Did I mention "Pain in the Butt"!!!

    Did you think to shop around for price of media blasting the fenders definitely would have been faster??

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  4 года назад +1

      I didn't... I have a Pot Blaster (never used until now) and a Blasting Cabinet (not used yet) and thought it would be simple. I will most likely find a local shop to blast my frame. That would be too much work. Cheers!

    Hi PR would you ever do this method again or would I pay to have the fenders sandblasted?

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  3 года назад +1

      Interesting question. The method in this video was a lot more work than I had anticipated. My fenders had Primer and 3 different colors of paint. Once I set my own expectations that this is a long process and let the process do the work, I was much happier. I did Sandblast some of the inner fender sections. Certainly if you have access to a professional sandblaster, that would also be a good option. The OEM panels are thick gauge metal and should not be affected too much by the heat.

    I am putting together my 5.3 right now for a project. Did you align hone your rods with new arp bolts? Or are they aftermarket rods? Also how far along are you with the engine getting set in?

    • @UCanDoIt2Mike
      @UCanDoIt2Mike  4 года назад +1

      They are aftermarket Rods. I am desperately working to get the body work complete so that I can pull the Body and knock out the Frame repair/restoration. Then we are ready for the put-put engine. Cheers and thanks for following along.

    Cover it with plastic and it won't dry out and last a lot longer! I use trash bags!
