I get off the couch and walk upstairs just to flip some knives a couple times, then go back downstairs with a different one in my pocket. I probably do that 10 times a day lol
I used to have a small collection and would do this. After selling all of them I miss it, and as useful as a Leatherman is it's just not the same. Big difference between utility and sentimental or aesthetic value.
I bought one of those "Work Sharp sharpener thingamagiggies". I call it the poor man's (or Gal's) KME. It's perfect for the person who just needs to sharpen their EDC knife now and again, and to maintain it. Add a strop with green compound and you're good to go. I'll still use my DMT diamond bench stones for my kitchen knives.
If you ever want to improve it try some lapping films. They are cheap on Amazon if you cut them to size yourself and you can get near mirror polished results.
@@kylearmstrong6876 you're welcome. If you want to get fancy, Gritomatic makes an adapter for it that lets you use any 4" stone and there's a guy on EBay selling a lapping film holder for it as well.
Pete, I fully get the feeling of holding and using a large 'tactical' knife that will never get used for its intended purpose. My number 1 happiness knife is my TOPS Operator 7. I purchased it on and whim for no real reason but love it. It's a chunk of steel that can take anything. I get a weird feeling that it's laughing at me every time I try to push it to its limits - and that makes me smile too. Weird - yes but that's the nature of knife collecting.
I can’t just hold the knife and smile. I have to check that it is shaving sharp and then hold it and smile. I have run out of hair but not smiles. Thank you for another thoughtful and thought provoking video. Off to pick my 5.
Honest too goodness personal opinions of knives is what I look for, not the endless "knife reviews" that so many channels pore out in the quest for "$$$$" be nice to see what others personal choices are? The knife #1 that always makes me happy is my first Sebenza, don't carry it much now, but very much appreciate her :)
Fantastic video - you are halfway around the world and opened my eyes to a knife maker Creely that’s 20 minutes from my house! Definitely picking one up! Thank you!
This is a great idea because you're the only one who knows what makes you happy and I don't think most ppl would debate something that makes someone happy
Lovely title. My five happy go-to-knives, because they feel like...knives and I love using them: Helle Temagami, Brisa Trooper (used to be the Brisa/Enzo Camper for me, but now this one), LT Wright GNS (first made by Blind Horse Knives), Bark River Aurora LT, Casström Lars Fält Knife...
A great reminder that having different hobbies and interests is good, and to do what makes you smile. Your videos are very entertaining, keep up the great work brother!
I'm not a knife guy, but I find this channel somehow mesmerising. My small collection of multitools does however spark joy, particularly my EDC Surge. Ta Pete.
I returned that worksharp Precision sharpener because I couldn't get all the way into the plunge grind on a bunch of knives so I'll be interested to see how it goes for you.
The knives that make me happy are my Kabar bk9, Cold Steel 4Max, Mora Companion HD, Twosun TS16-M390, Benchmade Mini Freek. These are the tools that make me happy because when I use then I always take them out and admire them knowing that the work im going to do is made so much easier with them. I tend to cut/carve wood more than anything else, but I like to have a slicer for the occasional cardboard and food prep. I would also add in my Leatherman Surge in the mix because it's the one tool I use the most that has a blade on it. If it had a better steel on the Surge blade I would drop the Mini Freek altogether. Keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.
Pete, it made me so happy when you shouted out the police 4 in K390. Inexplicably it’s one of my favorite spydercos. Love how slicey it is and the blade length is so aggressively great!
NGL, I don't have five knives that aren't SAK (and I have five of those). But, when I'm camping, my versatile little Buck Bantam often calls out to be handled. I know, I don't qualify as a hardcore knife fan, and I expect to be shunned by all and sundry, but I like Pete, and I like Gabe, and I do like Brickie!
That Mako is one of the nicest designs I've seen in a while. I only started using fixed blades as an EDC option recently, but if I keep enjoying it I think that will be my first really premium fixed blade.
Happy Happy, Joy Joy! "Not to mention the improvement in Peter's grades..." Lol, what was that about ? Well, it made me smile, and that is a good thing.
Exactly. I fell in love with the 940 because wranglerstar talked so highly of it. I still find myself going back and watching those videos with my 940 in my hand XD. even though it has only 1 functional Omega spring, I still love it so much.
@@longshanks5531 the trail master is one of my dream knives. I love the shape and width of it (gigity). It looks like something I could rely on for everything. I could kill a bear with that thing AND skin it AND process firewood with it AND cook with it.
A rather curious list. That first one made me think of Hoge's immortal line in a well known classic old time film: "Now thet's a noif". I'm glad your happy. It's noice to be heppy. Long time no comment from this old dude from Canada. It's also nice to fondle a good knife. Cheers!
Struth mate! You're typing that accent like Pete's a bloody Kiwi. Our brothers across the ditch are the ones who say 'thet's some terrufuc fush end chups'. Have a good one ay Hoosier.
I think the only knife that makes me happy that I don't carry/use at least occasionally is my shuredge ka-bar that was my grandfather's during his stint as a seabee during WW2. Honestly, the shape of a ka-bar is like that of a Coca-Cola glass bottle in that it's such an iconic design.
Stoked for the vids coming up! So much to love here. Props for spreading enthusiasm about the hobby and reminding people why they fixate on sharp metal objects haha
Love the Chris Reeve Pacific. At $325 it’s less than some newer companies’ fixed blades which don’t match up for value. Fits great in hand. It sits unused in case of extreme need.
Great vid Pete. Thanks for supporting your viewership. It's getting to be the season when your annual rankings of knife companies and steels come out. Maybe an annual review of sharpening gizmos can be added to your annual ranking offerings. I'm looking forward to your tier list vids.
I have a Helle Temagami and a BRKT Bravo 1 that I pick up all the time, but never use. My Terava Jaakaripuukkos and Moras, however, get carried and used all the time!😊😊
Ha! We will have to trade surf spots someday in private 😎 we don't have sharks, saltwater crocodiles or box jellyfish here on the Great Lakes USA a much different vibe but I'm sure you would dig our small wave vibe 🤙
Do you still have the spyderco mantra? I had to get one after watching you use that poor knife for so many test haha! Everytime I carry it I think about yours!
Someone at KA-BAR thinks the USSF is super cool/hilarious. They have three knives and a breaching tool dedicated to the USSF in that same aesthetic. I got my SpaceBar the other day - it's supposed to be for my birthday in 2 months (the price was right) but I keep digging out just to stare and smile.
Hey Pete, are you interested in using and reviewing the Spyderco Tatanka? It has the extinct Power lock on it, if you are hit me up, I’ll send it out to you for testing and review!
Great vid Pete, love to see what gives others the same feeling. Hard to understand unless you've got the knife bug. Fixed blades, i have a few bark rivers in ironwood burl that I pick up and admire. Spydercos are new to me, and I'm wondering what took me so long. Love just pulling that para 3 from pocket, actually gives me a dopamine kick i reckon.
the worksharp precision adjust is a pretty good system all by itself but in case you didnt know you can also modify it to take kme stones with a gritomatic 4 inch stone holder. the poor mans kme
Excited to see you tag friends from the community, your awesome Pete thanks for all your awesome content 👍
I'm relieved to find out that I'm not the only one who will walk the length of my house just to pull out a particular knife and hold it.
All the time

Thank you very much for the tag. This is a cool idea for a video. I'll get to work. 🏋️.
You showed some great choices too. That Kabar looks sick.

I was issued a Case XX Bowie in the service. I didn't use it for bushcrafting.
My paper thin 15v trapper from BBB Handmade is by far my #1. Bonkers. It never gets old.

wow...worth watching just for that last clip
Happy to see you happy😁
I just bought my woman a TRC South Pole in blue linen micarta / elmax . Just a beautiful blade
No advanced knife bro? Also, do you have a link for the last small fixed blade in the video?
