It's probably worth noting that I had a time limit of 30 minutes per bust, I scoffed, and made it 40 minutes. And that didn't include the finishing brush work I couldn't help myself from doing on the last one.

In preparation for going at your Knights i would highly recommend checking out The Wargamers Consortiums vid on pre/post shading shown on a rhino, i used the method on all the tanks, drop pods and dreads in my Crimson Fists army, super fast and with some brush detailing and an oil wash it gives great results!
Ive been using an airbrush in the cheap range with something that looks exactly like the mid tier compressor for years and its been great, just being able to prime with zenithal highlight without touching rattle cans, no worries about warm, cold or humidid weather and being able to lay down basecoat in minutes per model was a game changer when it came to my painting.
Also amazing for quickly painting up terrain is invaluable.

Dave with how much paint you sloshed out of the cup and on to the table I have two tips to give you.
1) Learn to rock the trigger back and forth so that you are doing lots of little short bursts. This way is so that you do not have to be waving your hand/arm about as much and causing the paint to slosh around in the cup as much and hence lessening the chance of slipping.
2) Use less paint in the cup. Again this helps with lessening the chance of paint sloshing out of the cup due to hand/arm movement.
Short controlled bursts are a key thing for airbrushing. Speckling really should never happen with and airbrush, which you can get from spray paint cans when starting to press or release the spray nozzle on them and is why we do the sweeping motion with them. Different tools means that we may have to learn different rules for using them.
Also do yourself a favor and watch an read up on how to properly use an airbrush, unlike Jazza whose stick is doing everything blindly. Having a basic understanding of tools and materials beforehand is so helpful in allowing us to getting a far better result sooner with new tools.
The needle protector on the Harder and Steenbeck should be removed when in use.
The two prong needle cap is the one you should be using.
You seem to be getting a lot of air bubbles in the paint cup that’s probably due the either the needle not being seated correctly in the needle cap or the tip of the airbrush hasn’t been tightened enough.
Also what needle are you using?
With a finer needle the paint dilution needs be thinner.

@@narratordave7831 I have the H&S Infinity CR+. It likes thin paints and higher pressures with the fine needle, but can still be very detailed. The pinch tip needle guard is a must and the fine pressure control (FPC) valve is useful if your compressor is on the floor (like mine). The quick release paint limiter becomes invaluable once you get used to it - mine is in constant use. For compressors, I recommend a "silent" one with a decent sized reservoir like the Bambi BB8/BB15 if you are going to do much airbrushing.
@@dpdurlston-powell3851 On ultra fine needles I stick to using acrylic inks. Even Air brush paint is laughably too thick and needs to be thinned down so much I'd rather start with the higher pigmented inks.
Most of the problems you encountered with the cheap setup comes down to the compressor. A good compressor cam make your airbrush experiance way better. 2 things to look out for in a compressor are 1: a preasure tank 2: a moisture trap . The tank will eleminate the pulsing of the compressors motor, that might be transfered to the air flow itself and the moisture trap helps filtering out the water in the air, that can build up to tiny dropplets over time in your hose and spit it out through the air canal of the airbrush rhuining your work. Another thing is, to prevent the clogging of paints you should polish the needle with a soft foam nail polish pad and use flow improover or dry retarder in the paint.
Yeah the moisture trap has a little valve on the buttom. The "broken" compressor has it stuck in the up position. They should pull it down, wait for a littlebit of pressure to build up and it would be fixed.
"Have you got the manual for it?" It's like Dave doesn't know you at all!
that "broken" compressor can be fixed by pulling down on the little nible thingi under the glas. That's a humidity chamber and sometimes the get stuck in the up position whenever the presure has been gone.
Or, if it really was broken beyond repair, a new regulator, with pressure gauge and moisture trap, costs $20!
Now the real question is how many of the problems that Dave had with the expensive airbrush were due to Jazza taking it apart and putting it back together?🤔
That is likely why it was bubbling in the cup.
It would be interesting to combine the cheap airbrush with the expensive compressor and visa-versa to see which of both is most important to buy in high quality.
I have a 'cheap compressor' that looks very similar to the 'broken' one, works great with my mid-range H&S brush.

To everybody watching this video, there is an important thing to remember. As with all skills, the best tools are only as good as your skill level. High-level tools require your skill level to coincide with it. Don't expect to buy an expensive highly recommended tool and think you're going to create masterpieces. You need to put the effort and time into honing your skill first. That's why you should always start with affordable tools at your level of skill. This goes with almost every hobby/skill. Don't waste your money.
Thats why my end of the day recommendation went to the mid tier airbrush - I felt that going straight to a complex high end tool was asking for trouble, but if you could afford the middle brush VS the beginner, it was worth the jump up (dont know if this actually made it into the video, but i said it!)
For new painters, I will always recommend an iwata neo and a generic compressor (the broken one) with an air tank. Can be found on eBay for around $100aud (often sold rebranded in stores for several hundred but are the same model), and the iwata neo can be found for also around the $100 mark, or much cheaper buying one used and just replacing nozzle and needle if needed.
A .35 nozzle is a good size for doing base coats and still allows for some precision, especially on things like tank models where Camo patterns don't need to be too precise. I still use mine and haven't yet felt the need to upgrade, when I do it'll probably be to a finer needle badger

Its so important to have the paint thinned proper for the needle size and also having the right pressure setting. I'm new to airbrushing and having those things right makes or breaks your experience.

A good compressor with a tank is far more important than the brush. Yes, there are differences in brushes but you can go a long way with low and mid tier, especially with a selection of needle sizes.

"I feel I'm more connected to the airbrush" -- Super glue makes that really easy. It's just the disconnecting from the airbrush afterwards that's hard.
I recommend acetone.
It also needs to be noted that there are single and dual action airbrushes, and you can have the two in all types of price ranges.
Airbrush arrived monday, got all the extras today, and start spraying paint in 30 minutes. 6 weeks of painting terrain w/ brush was enough to push me over the edge.

I started with that same exact cheap 20 dollar airbrush and later bought the Infinity plus, here are my findings: The cheap ones are complete hit or miss because of lack of quality control. They are horrible to learn airbrushing with because it is very hard to figure out if the problem is your mixing, your control or simply the airbrush itself. The infinity is difficult to master but I love it now. It's biggest pro is how easy it is to clean.

I often give new folks advice with airbrushes to avoid the cheaper ones if possible. Jazza's comment about the cheaper metal is spot on and I've legit had one of the cheaper ones explode apart under air pressure from the compressor before. The seals aren't super strong and the needles tend to bend easier. I've seen a lot of folks try to get into airbrushing and then run into component issues like that and then just never pick up an airbrush again. Just something I try to make the people I teach aware of. The mid tier, as Dave pointed out, can be a bit finicky depending on what you're doing, but overall tend to be where I tell people to start. I have a local shop that sells used mid tier airbrushes, but I feel it gives you the best "here's how you do all the admin of an airbrush" without the fear of massive component failure. The last bit of advice I usually give folks as well is to remember that the airbrush is just a tool to learn how to use / master and is not a magic fix all. It has some real good strengths and some draw backs, and as Jazza pointed out with content he watched, it's not uncommon to have a set on the table to hot swap between for specific tasks. I have a rotation of 4 with different needle sizes and purposes, just like different sized paintbrushes.

Angel Giraldez has a really good method for attaining perfect consistency, mix in a spare mini blister (I use one of the old GW sand containers) then pour into the airbrush cup once you have the consistency right.
I use a shot glass set that i got at a goodwill..... dump the dirty shot glasses into the sink after.
I have some 5 years working with an airbrush, got an Infinity CR+ last October, upgrading from an Iwata Eclipse and I for sure had trouble transitioning to the 1.5mm needle. BUT as I got used to the tool, my work vastly improved, for sure worth the time and effort!

Iwata Eclipse HP-CS is an amazing brush to use. Some of the more expensive airbrushes are amazing for very specific applications but most people won't need those.
You just need to learn thinning and pressure control and you won't end up with jaundice 😁
There are some Harder and Steinbecks that would be great for more general applications as well, but still super expensive and not worth the price jump for beginners.

Working with an airbrush is all about practice, and keeping going. Best thing to do is have a bunch of practice models to work on in order to learn the process.
I am one of those people that will tell you to not use a needle cover, but to clean the needle tip with a brush a few passes to remove the dry paint. The reason for this is that the needle cover causes it to spray in a wider cone, where as not using it helps keep the paint more focused.
Also, I'd point out the difference between 1 and 2 action airbrushes, as there is a lot of difference with them and how they work.

I would rather have a nice compressor and a cheap airbrush than vice versa. A good compressor can sometimes make up for cheaper air brush, but an expensive brush can be crippled by a poor compressor. But fun video :)
The amount of times that parts of the airbrushes got thrown and dropped is honestly impressive.
I relate to flinging the paints out of the cups, and on your hands WAY too much.
I feel like you should have tried an iwata neo, as it's probably one of the best airbrushes for its price and is often regarded as one of the best air brushes for general purpose beginners.
Also paired with a generic compressor like the second one (broken one) but with an air tank and an inline water trap. This is pretty indicative of a decent system without spending too much, and is what a lot of people start with when they know they want to keep at it but can't justify buying expensive mod or high tier systems.
Also, a lot of the issues on the better airbrushes were simply user error, you have more control, but as a result it will be less forgiving, you need to balance your air pressure and thinness of paint. He admitted this, so it is fairly stated in the video, but I feel like it is still favouring the cheap system which may be easier for a brand new beginner (no pressure control, wider nozzle is more forgiving for paint mix etc) and honestly, it doesn't take long to get the hang of the basics once you use a gun for a few hours, and I think most will agree that the better guns and compressors will be much more worthwhile than the cheap knockoff brands and small nail tech compressors.
I got an airbrush and I can wait to paint more minis . Could you do more sculpting your own figures and painting it. I think that could be great
I do not remove the needle through pulling it out of the back of the airbrush, residual paint might get stuck in the middle part while pulling the needle out. i prefer removing the entire middle part and pulling the needle out from the front of the needle chucking guide.
The Infinity CR+ is by far my most favorite airbrush. The newer needles (version 2) are variable... Meaning if you use the .4 needle you can spray insanely thin lines (finer than a Vex / sotar 2020) and then very broad lines utilizing the .4 only with trigger control and finger finesse. Because of this I usually use the .4 needle.
It's also worth noting that the air valve in the Infinity CR+ is also variable. Meaning you can control the air flow with the pressure you apply with your finger down on the trigger. You cannot do this with other manufacturers such as the Vex (Badger) where their air valves are on/off only.
The more familiar you become with the Infinity the more you'll come to appreciate it and use it more.
Someone already commented on the tip guard being installed while in use... That was kind of sad to see on this video when giving a review.

I have 2 airbrushes, that I have not touched in over a year, but the compressor from the second kit looks like the middle one. So if it is not meant for Airbrushes it is still being sold for air brushes the world over. Actually that reminds me that compressor is sold without a regulator I really should get around to acquiring one.
You know it occurs to me that I have an even bigger but still "desk sized" compressor in the garage, I should put my cheap airbrush on that and see if that gives me a nice prime as it has a regulator on it.
I have a basic 32 PSI airbrush, might brush off the dust and try using it.
Can confirm going high end to begin isn't the best idea lol I started with a badger krome with a .2mm needle and it was a hard time learning proper use and control.

As always, gentlemen, an excellent video. You drag me further into the hobby each day. Lol. I have two main questions for you guys. First, I am really just looking to airbrush for basecoat/gradient on two redemptors, two repulsors, and two gladiators. I know I don't "need" an airbrush. But if I got one for this purpose, will a budget one suit my needs?
Second question, will any compressor with standard fittings work for an airbrush, provided it can maintain the proper pressure? I've got a giant tank w/compressor that would be a hell of a time to lug around, but if it saves me a couple hundred bucks I'm happy to do it at least for a while. Bonus question, can you apply a wash with an airbrush? Second bonus question, would the cheap airbrush work better with a normal compressor/tank combo? Thanks so much guys. You have really opened my eyes to a new medium for creative expression. And my wallet is hurting, but my heart is glowing. Thank you.
As long as you can turn down your large compressor to 20-30 psi you can use it. You will want a filter/water trap as well as larger compressors tend to get water in the line that you dont want in your brush. I started using a cheapy compressor but the noise inside my house was insane when it filled. I just got a better compressor but it is still a regular one just loe decibell and it works great with my airbrush. I just use an Inexpensive brush but with a good compressor you can do a lot.
The Infinity is the hardest brush to learn with I've ever used. The Iwata, the Badger and other mid tier brushes are so much more forgiving. I find I need to thin paints down to an almost water constancy to use the Infinity or it will bubble/ not spray. The learning curve on that brush was crazy.

What sized needle were you trying to use?! I have one with a 0.4mm and a 0.2mm and especially with the 0.4mm I had no trouble at all for basic tasks from the very beginning years ago.
if you are getting the "spiderwebbing" blowout turn down your air pressure a bit. Different paints may require different pressure, even in the same paint range
It’s not just that Dave is a newbie to the Air brush. It’s the same with watercolor that if you are working with materials that is too cheaply made where you either not enough control with the tool due to how it’s made, surface is too problematic (In those case not the case for the surface as you picked higher quality minis), chalky paints (also not the problem here as the paints of higher quality).... it will frustrate the new person to the process and probably push them away from the process. Luckily Dave had Jazza’s who *did* use airbrush before that he could explain what could be possiable to do if need be.
It's worth noting that it's *very* easy to damage your airbrush if you are a hamfiste.. ehem.. "kinesthetic learner" just read the manual and familiarize your self with the tool before you destroy it :)
Also always test your paint dilution on paper before spraying your model, if it doesn't come out with fine even coverage your've got it wrong but not destroyed your paint job ;)

Soo you mean a 0.4 in the infinity is detail? Slap the 0.15 in the infinity and be amazed! I have my 0.4 needle in my Evo for general use! And right now it's a 0.2 in the infinity... Hehe
The bubbling should be sorted with tightening the nozzle (and or some bee's vax on the treads) the spattering feels like a bit chunky paint. With the H&S 0.4 and smaller I tend to thin quite much.
And for the air compressors to Dave I would say buy one with a 3L tank for about 100-150£\€ and you got a compressor for life (I personally prefer a twin/dual piston one, they have a more pleasant sound and don't work as hard to reach the same psi as a single one)
The turnnob on the infinety is to control the amount of paint, it stopps you pulling the trigger back. And its much more finekey to use the 0.15mm needle because the paint needs to be super thinn
A $900 airbrush? That's a luxury most pros could not afford. 😵
I've only been using an airbrush for about 2 years roughly so I'm no expert, but I've found they work best with inks, or give GW contrast paints a go.
Go for about 20 - 2t psi on the compressor
Thanks for the video it was really helpful! I getting into painting miniatures for the first time after a year of pixel art. And going to start with an airbrush as I feel it's going to help get me in as you can paint more effincently(Time to paint on model) than a brush. I got the Cult of Paint Infinity a mid-tier brush that looks a lot like your high-tier example... including the dial on the end. Which is a detail dial to control the fineness of the brush... I think that was your problem.
I use the bottom tier airbrush with the mid tier airbrush, having used the bottom tier both... compressor completely changes the way the airbrush handles. Setup is perfect for me!
A big part of the problem might be that you're using Army Painter paints. They're pretty inconsistent in their consistency.

tbf those mid tier and cheap tier are quite weirdly priced imo. the cheap tier compressor is just;...gods no... don't do that to yourself, don't get one of those small boxy things.
my starting kit was like, 100ish euro and i had that same type of mid tier compressor and a generic gravity fed dual action airbrush. (a timbertech set i got from amazon methinks) and it's still the set i use today, it's just a good set at beginner/intermediate level set to get used to airbrushing imo. not too expensive, yet decent enough to do good quality airbrushing.
only issue I've had with my set is that you do need to take regular breaks if you wanna airbrush for a few hours, the compressor isn't really made for running a long time and can overheat (i also airbrush cosplay props and miniature terrain, so mass producing miniature walls or doing big props etc can take a while)
but that's not that big an issue imo, it's a good starter set till you find out whether you want to go spend the big bucks on airbrushes.
if i want to improve my setup, i'd look for a compressor with a decent size tank so it smooths out that first sputter and is more consistent, and make sure it has a decent moisture filter thingy, cause that thing is a life saver :P but for the airbrush, i'm not that sure that there's a lot of difference between a good quality mid-range airbrush and one of the high end expensive ones maybe other peeps have more experience with that ^^
Asking as someone with literally zero experience with air brushes and vary little experience with painting minis and figure etc:
I doubt it matters for beginners, but at higher skill levels does air quality become a factor one might look out for? I’m assuming these air pumps pull from the immediate area, but if you live in areas with particularly poor air quality would you want to have a separate tank for the air you plan to use?

I was in the same boat I just finished making one using a box fan i already had to pull the air through a cheap filter it works great i used a large cardboard box and lots of glue gun sticks.
A little off topic, but Jazza, have you considered making a book nook? It seems like something you'd like what with all the minis and diorama-like looks... just food for thought. Great info in this video, I've been thinking of getting an airbrush but didn't know where to start. Thanks for this! 😁
@NarratorDave I have to say you did an amazing job with the H&S... especially considering you had the protective cap on. I was screaming at my screen but i guess you couldn't hear me. That was the culprit of all the sputtering as the paint would have collected on the opening. It would be nice to see you try again with the proper tip.
I have the infinity and I love it. Try not to drop it without the protective cap. I damaged 2 needles and 1 tip. They are not forgiving at all
I am armed with a lot more information than my initial 10 minute pep talk thanks to you and everyone else in the comments. I look forward to going at an airbrush dave style when I can get around to buying one - Dave style involves video tutorials, manuals, and many many hours of practice :)

I've been using one of those cheap knockoff thingies for 3 years now. Still running and producing okayish results when laying down basecoats, value sketches or simple gradients but not suited for fine details. Nevertheless, I'm still glad I picked a cheap airbrush first. I learned a lot about handling an airbrush (maintenance, air pressure, colour consistency, techniques....) and really think I got away with some abuse that would have killed a more delicate tool...
Jazza's custom Tape-L Top Time shirt at the start was badass
I love my H&S Infinity airbrush. I prefer to use the Liquitex Acrylic Inks in it, but have run a fair bit of tinted down Army Painter paints through it. Jazza should give Dave the Infinity airbrush.
Always have a tray under you when taking apart an airbrush

Oh wow, I have the same "cheap" airbrush and compressor... or at least, similar models. It's OKAY. For base layers and shit like that, but while for example I have no issues with deep colors like red, or black, or brown, or blue... painting in white is a massive pain due to clogging and yellows are also horrible.
In my entire time as gamer i used less expensive airbrushes but i mainly just under coat and base coated with mine (rattle cans ere expensive and hard to get at the time)
I would have constant blockages and lets just say i can field strip a sparmax airhox in a few seconds lol
the infinity cr+ even in 2in1 costs around 250€ i never saw it for 900$ but it's still a great brush

Did the first compressor have a PSI control? Couldn't tell in the video, and it seems that a lot of problems Jave was having may hae come from too high PSI.

I think this video reenforces a view I've had for a while. When you're a beginner, use beginner tools. Even if you plan on continuing the hobby for years, start with the cheapest materials.
Guitar for example. You might want to buy that cool, kind of expensuve guitar to learn on, but you will learn much more by just getting a cheap second hand guitar or generally the cheapest option. You'll learn the basics of how to play guitar, but more importantly you'll start to realize why the cheap tools are cheap so you can truly appreciate the better tools when you upgrade. By the time you buy that sick expensive guitar, you'll know why it's so sick and expensive. You'll have built an understanding of the progressive quality of the tools available and also learned that even the cheapest guitar can sound pretty damn good if you play it right and work with the limitations.
To add to this, I recently got into digital art using a drawing tablet. I looked at all the options and settled on a $50 Huion something or other (Pro V2 I think?) I don't know if it's a great buy or if I just can't tell whether or not the more expensive ones are that much better, but that's the point. It works fine, smooth lines and all the functionality I need as far as I can tell. In a year or two I might find some limitations that justify a more expensive tablet, but for now it's exactly what I need. It's only been about 3 months and I've already gotten very comfortable with it and it can do anything I've attempted so far.

My recommendation for a first airbrush would be the badger khrome as it has both a fine needle and a less fine needle and isn't too expensive.
How much is in the airbrush and how much in the compressor? Would it be possible to try the cheap brush with the good compressor, and the good airbrush with the cheap compressor to see how those combinations perform. For someone new to airbrushing is it best to get an overall medium setup, or go all out on either airbrush or compressor and cheap out on the other?
Hey Jazza, when you take the needle out of an airbrush, do not pull it backwards, push it out of the front, so you do not get paint stuck in the back of the brush.

Why does the infinity cr plus costs 900$ in US? I paid 250€ for mine (exact same as you are using in this video).
I have no clue what you did to your airbrushes but i also tested two different iwatas in the past and in my opinion the infinity cr plus is by far the best airbrush i ever used.
What is realy important if you want to aribrush with fine needles, you need a flow improver or a drying retarder. The problem is, the high pressure air does dry out your acrylics much faster. This results in clocking the nozzle. This may become super frusrtating, It also depends on the color itself. Some clock more than others. If you dilute your color too much, you will have spider webs. If you increase air pressure to force the color out the nozzle, you will again dry the colors faster again.
Mixing the color with the correct conistency and using dry retarder is essential for good results. Also if you want to airbrush high level stuff, you may also want to airbrush very thin coats and repeat the process over and over again, like you may do with glazes. But fortunately, it is much easier to do as most people expect.
I tried a cheap shitty brush initially.
Was absolutely garbage and I gave up airbrushing.
Then a year or two later I decided to try again with an iwata eclipse airbrush and it was a game changer.

This video reminds me of review videos of cameras. Apart from comparing different airbrushes using different compressors, it should be made clear where the differences in performance, which are reflected by the price, are relevant. I am using 25 EUR internal mix airbrush to paint model cars and it is perfect for that purpose and my skills. I doubt if it will look any better if I use that 900 dollar something shown here as superior. Before getting impressed by outcome of the comparison ask yourself do you really need the features you are paying for? A Lamborghini will always beat a ford fiesta, but do you really have a highway to exploit its superior features or you need a car only to pick kids from school?
I just bought that cordless airbrush, very cheap and not great quality but definitely change the game for me. Even the cheapest airbrush is better than no airbrush.
Btw, where I can find the test page? I would love to see how my air would perform in this kind of test
