    The start of my full playthrough of the Cycle of Eternity scenario (the shortest and easiest!) of the new second edition of Mansions of Madness. You can think of this as a solo playthrough or a two player one since they play exactly the same! If you'd like to get straight to the story, it's 4:23, and to go straight to the first turn it's 8:42.
    NOTE: This is the first scenario of the game and while it will be a little different every time, the broad strokes of the story are the same so there are some spoilers.

    Fantastic game. It is, however, very easy to forget about your items when playing. At 17:15, Wendy should have gotten all 4 of her Will dice because she has the Holy Cross item, which negates the penalty imposed by the check. Also, at 30:50 the Hunting Horror would not have moved to attack Wendy, because she was not in range, which is not counted through doors. The monster would have stayed in place and attacked William. At 31:28 the Cultist was, in fact, in range of Wendy, and was adjacent to her, as the app's instructions said, so the Cultist should have attacked her.

    Fantastic video! Thank you so much for being so comprehensive and showing all parts of it as if we were really there. Thanks to seeing it fully including the app, I am much closer to buying this game. First, I will try to find a meet-up group who plays this game, and thanks to your video I will be able to have my first play with a great understanding of the game, thank you!

    16:58 from the rules: "If multiple investigators would resolve a horror check against the same monster, those investigators all resolve the same horror check.", so you only need to do one horror check in the app, and all characters will make their own rolls. Makes sense since they're all witnessing the same horror :)

    Yay! I am so excited for this.
    Thank you for mentioning that the app is available on Steam. I did not realize that and thought I would have to run it on my Android phone, which is not the best platform for it.

      So far it's living up to the excitement for me :D
      It sounds like Steam is the platform that gets updates the fastest which is nice for this too, I can't imagine getting 5 hours into the huge scenario and the app crashing! Although in playing the first scenario a few times I haven't come across any crashes myself yet.

    right a the end at 31:21 - are you sure it was played correctly? Why did you first move the cultist and then select that the cultist can not move attack? The app said to move and attack the adjacent investigator - the culltist moved and was in range/adjacent to an investigator....

  • @markstoneham5856
    @markstoneham5856 8 лет назад +7

    Great video, although I don't think you're doing the Horror Check correctly against multiple investigators (when they're all on the same space as the monster). They should all check against the same Horror Check not have a different Horror Check each.
    According to the Rule Reference booklet: "If multiple investigators would resolve a horror check against the same monster, those investigators all resolve the same horror check."

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  8 лет назад +1

      +Mark Stoneham yup that's right, when I can get to a PC I'll add a note :) on the plus side the videos show off a bigger variety of horror checks from the mistake!

    Awesome vid man I was on the fence about this game because I didn't like that you need to use the app (like Xcom which I thought was beyond awful). After seeing your vid I changed my mindn it' looks really cool. Dumb Question: Is it the same game each time or will it spawn different rooms / enemies when you replay it?

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  8 лет назад +2

      As far as I know, the main plot of the scenario will be the same every time, but there are multiple layouts for the mansions (even more if you buy the extra tile packs) and the items and enemies can be different each time

    It's been almost 4 years since I played the 1st edition. Is it just me or were a lot of the rules simpler for the 1st edition? It seemed like once the host had the general rules down on running the game, the investigator players really didn't have many complex rules to memorize and it could be very casual friendly. This video makes the 2nd edition seem like it's Eldritch Horror levels of complexity.

    I am not familiar with this game, each scenario if played multiple times, each time will be with different stories and events? Or it will be the same?

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  8 лет назад +1

      +Board Games world Thank you! I can only speak for the first scenario so far, and the main plot points of the story there will be the same each time but the layout of the mansion and some of the events that happen will be a bit different. I'm told that other scenarios vary more than this one, and I'm looking forward to playing those :)

    • @jerkchickenblog

      Its the same every time. You get different monster spawns and sometimes different tiles, but the story itself is identical, unlike first edition.

    The app helps make the game soloable, which is always a plus. My biggest concern is what will happen to this edition when Fantasy Flight Games comes out with the inevitable third edition. This game is not cheap - the core game retails for almost $100. If the game is dependent on the app, it appears owners will be stuck with an obsolete game when FFG stops supporting it.

    • @burialgroundbelgium
      @burialgroundbelgium 6 лет назад

      TarotMage well, they kinda integrated the first edition in this one , you can use old parts in this game as well. As far as supporting the app, wouldn't worry aboutit , we're still able to play videogames of the early 80's , so in the worst case, there'll always be a way, and it's not like ffg is going to end in the near future, ( with ffg interactive) , so I'm pretty sure we'll be able to enjoy this game for many years

  • @sendep7
    @sendep7 8 лет назад

    did you forget a horror check when your second player entered the dining room? if i remember correctly, you have to run a horror check each time a character enters the same tile as a monster (at least in 1st ed)

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  8 лет назад

      +sendep7 I think that must have changed for the new version, you have to do an evade check when leaving a space with a monster or interacting with anything on the same space as it, but the horror checks are just once a round in the Mythos phase (handled by the app)

  • @TheMadwizz

    Vary nice video. Now I have a better view of the game.

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  7 лет назад

    • @nickrekietascrosseyedwife7166
      @nickrekietascrosseyedwife7166 5 лет назад

      @@luisgabriel5737 This is a very old comment, but I have and love both games, and for two players I highly recommend this. One or two is a very good player count for this, as there is a lot of down time in between turns, and anyone not interested in the narrative will be falling asleep and checking their phone. Kemet is also a great game, but it starts to get good at three and really shines at five players in my opinion.

  • @SpectreTheHorseman
    @SpectreTheHorseman 8 лет назад

    they claim to have added some randomness for replayability but seriously, there isn't much replay value, in my opinion, except for some of the harder scenarios when the replay is because you haven't beat it yet.

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  8 лет назад

      +SpectreTheHorseman according to folks on BGG there are 4 different ways the 1st scenario can go (although admittedly not that different) but I must have been unlucky because I've only ever seen the exact same layout! I think there's one scenario where the culprit is different every time

  • @tillytate6401

    • @slickerdrips

      I think there are 3 or 4 different layouts for each scenario - broadly the story is the same but the monsters/rooms/items might shift around a bit

    • @brittanymarielittle186
      @brittanymarielittle186 8 лет назад

      +slickerdrips First scenario, pretty early on: tiles were labeled incorrectly on the app when told what to put down. I was able to figure it out by looking at the tile and matching it to what it really was. Game doesn't save at all, so I had to start over, and then the monsters awareness and horror rating was completely different than what the token says on my monster. App showed Priest of Dragon with an awareness of 10 when he's really a 4. Maybe I missed something, but I think it's just a few things they'll figure out after a bit.

    • @slickerdrips
      @slickerdrips  8 лет назад +1

      Wow that's quite a lot! It's made me a little wary of the longer scenarios in case of a crash two hours into a game, but it seems they're pushing out the updates quite quickly

      Since the check said to suffer 2 damage but that agility negates, he was getting a second success to ensure that William suffered no damage at all. If he hadn't spent the clue token to convert the investigation result into a success, then William would have had to suffer 1 damage.

    I'm disappointed with this. It seems just like an old pc adventure game from the late 90's - 00's. Except that there's a board where you can replicate the game and dice to determine outcome. I thought it would be more inventive and more board driven. Thanks very much for doing this video, though. Much appreciated.

    Great review..made not to buy it... It is always useful. Too clunky unfortunately, look at the app.. Look at the board.. Look at the app.. Look at the box.. Add the tile, look at the app...
