    A suggestion: If you really love a miniature and want to paint it, but don't think you have the skill, _paint the miniature_. If you don't, you'll either never think you're "good enough" or by the time you get to where you are confident in your skills, you won't love it any more. Use the enthusiasm that you have as motivation to keep going when the figure reaches the ugly stage (as they all do) and do your best. Then, with your increased skills, pick up another miniature you love and do the same with that.
    Miniatures companies are always making more miniatures, and you're going to love some of them. Always. And life is too short to be painting miniatures you don't love.

      Great advice. I painted the characters and smaller aliens from Nemesis and kinda stalled as the creatures grew larger. I'll have to go back to them once I've finished the current batch of figures im working on. That Queen is awfully daunting though.😬

    What a wonderful concept for a video! It was great fun. I appreciate how you admit that you bought some of these just for the art value, not the game value. It does seem that the hobby is approaching a shark-jumping moment -- I have thought about that since seeing reviews for Cthulhu Wars, where the minis seem to be so large that they block out the map. I appreciate good minis -- thank you CMON for demonstrating the market for that! -- but some of these made me laugh and shake my head. And that last one -- OMG, as the kids say!

    I'm in recovery from my addiction to buying Kickstarter games based on a) the amount and quality of miniatures, b) the size of the box and c) the number of shiny shiny stretch goals. Multiple Zombicides, BloodRage, Hellboy, DarkSouls, Massive Darkness etc, the list goes on. I'm glad that Games Workshop large box format board games always sell out so quickly as I can largely resist the core 40k and Age of Sigmar systems, but fill a box with plastic, high quality printed card and a rule book and next thing I know I'm working out whether or not the children can get by with their slightly too small school shoes for another few months. Thoroughly enjoyable video, thank you.

    Death May Die is an absolute blast to play. I have everything except the gigantic Cthulu and one of the investigators but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment. My only "complaint" would be that the map tiles can be a tad small at times and when you get a lot of Cultists on the board or fight the Black Goat of the Woods, you'll see what I mean. The scenarios are replayable which is very fun to do and since the combat is dice driven the game can sometimes hinge on a good/bad dice roll. I saw there was a kickstarter for some comics that included new investigators and some cards for the cultists that changed their behavior slightly. I missed out on those but maybe someone else has those and can talk more about them. Anyway, it's a great game and you and the Chaos Cultist would really enjoy playing it.

    Try Battletech. It is split for affordability purposes. To have a complete set you need:
    * Battletech beginner box
    * Battletech a game of armored combat (boxset)
    * Alpha Strike Commander's edition (rulebook)
    * Mechwarror destiny (rulebook)
    Destiny is a very simple role playing game. Suitable for role playing beginners and if you do not want narrative to be interrupted by excess of stats management. It has lots of pregenerated characters and missions and has a list of vehicles.
    Beginner box has simplified rules for tabletop beginners.
    Alpha Strike is an alternate fast paced set of rules useful for massive tabletop games or when you have little time to play.
    The two boxsets seem like one boxset split in two for affordability purposes.
    The magic of Battletech is not in the eye candy, but its gameplay. I get bored with tabletop games easily. Not with Battletech. I find it intellectually stimulating.
    There plenty of additional miniatures on the way and there are plenty of novels and lots of expansion rulebooks.

    Speaking of owning ridiculous board games. Did anybody own Battle Masters back in early 90s? It was a miniature army game. You didn't get a board, you got a big 4 1/2 x 5 ft play mat, I had to play on floor. There where like 100 miniatures that came with it too. It was a massive board game as a kid.

    Great video, and so impressed by the endearing positivity and enthusiasm you carry for these games, even while acknowledging you're very unlikely to ever play some of them. 😊
    I am in a similar boat in the sense I have several incredibly gorgeous (and expensive!) games -- incl. Tainted Grail -- but the likelihood of ever getting them to the table feels miniscule. I want to, but so many other games are on the list, and a lot easier to set up and get going with (with no painting req'd, either - hoorah!). That said, I am still quietly proud to have these ridiculous 'monster games' in my collection, even while regularly indulging in psychological self-flagellation at the brazen waste of hard-earned monies thrown at them. Are too many boardgames (myself included) still blissfully succumbing to 'the FOMO hotness', or just a tad bonkers with clearly more money than sense? 😂

    So though this may be disappointing for some people to hear Death May Die's campaign is almost non existent: it is told by 1-3 sentences at the beginning of each scenario, which really can be played in any order. I only say this though because if you are waiting for time to jump into a major campaign game, you don't have too; seriously just jump in and start playing. It is my favorite "beer and pretzels" style game by far and is streamlined in an excellent way that makes it a very easy game to teach to friends and family.
    On a side note, I own and have played most the games on your list here (just missing MoM and Hate), and by far, out of any board game I have played so far, Middara has jumped to the top of mine and my wife's favorite game of all time; you are in for a real treat with that one.

    I don’t own anything that can compete with that absurd Cthulhu statue (sorry, I can’t call that thing a mini!) the closest my group has is probably Shadows of Brimstone. That game has so many expansions and so much add-on content that it takes three trips to bring it in from the car when we take it anywhere to play, and one of our friends had to build a campaign system for it just so we could make sure we actually got to use all of the monsters and locations that were added on.

    Cthulhu: Death May Die is also the #1 in my collection, but sadly I only own the retail version. Makes me wish I hadn't missed kickstarter.
    Another game I can recommend that has insanely beautiful art and miniatures:
    Etherfields.
    On miniatures: Get some silicone putty and something like miliput. Take molds of the miniatures and make miliput copies. Test your skill on the copies until you're confident. And if all else fails, just prime them in skeleton bone or any light beige tone and dip them in quickshade. Makes them look like ivory figures.

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 года назад

      The retail version, if you get all the expansion is pretty much everything except the expansion that includes the big Cthulhu correct? I got really lucky because I did not put in on the KS version for C:DMD, the full game was gifted to me buy an overly generous friend that knew I love miniature adventure games. And I thank him for it!
      I will have to look into Etherfields, I've not heard of that one before.

    The 1 game that interests me the most, the one I probably never get, is "Deep Madness", because it's ridiculous expensive, even though you get a lot, which also is a problem, it takes a lot space for storage!
    2nd one will be "Oathsworn: Into the Deepwood", quite the same, but here it's the way of storytelling that seems the most interesting.
    Both have excellent miniatures, which is important to me, though not THE most important aspect.
    Both look over the top borderline crazy.

    Honorable Mention: Twilight Imperium. It's not the box. It's not the minis. It's the game play. It is not a big box by today's standards, but it was in the day. If you haven't set aside a whole weekend, you may not finish it. It has exploration. It has aliens races. It has combat. It has diplomacy. It has technology. It has empire building. It has death stars.... or rather war suns. It has everything you could want from an epic space game.

    I picked up Mansions of Madness at Target a while back on clearance. Mostly, for the miniatures. Seems like it could be fun to play once you get a feel for it, but I really didn't like the "You must use the App!" to play, kinda turned me off on actually playing it. Also, I don't have a group of people to play it with at this point, so, solo play would really be the only way, and..... I'm a bad solo player. :P (which expansion is that mass of limbs looking monster from? I love it.)
    Very interesting looking games, that Cthulhu "mini" is amazing.

    • @HobbyNight
      @HobbyNight  3 года назад +1

      The app in my experience is really unobtrusive to the game and I never felt like I was playing on it more than with the physical components.
      Plus it was really convenient way to track the more tedious thing like monster health, fire, and knowing which tiles to reveal next. And it made completing the puzzles a lot faster because there was never set up for any of them.
      I would recommend still giving it a try, at least once just to see how it works!

    It would be fun to see a Titan take on Cthulhu in a stouche. You could adapt the monster to GW Apocalypse rules which I am sure already has a data sheet for all the titans. If you haven't played Apocalypse I recommend it. The game is a total kak, my son and I played one in a GW store and they loved us because of two war hound titans v four knights. It is quick, easy to understand and fast paced. And you get to use really big units, like baneblades, Khorne Lord of Skulls, Wraith Knights etc...
