Have seen this show in 1973 as a German boy of 13 1/2 upon my first visit of my late aunt who had treated me to see this show at the Palace Theatre. Unforgettable! Still have the vinyl which is worn and scratched. So thank you for the upload!
Must’ve been a great night!
We saw it in 1973, too. I was 10. My dad recently threw away our diary of that holiday in which he had stuck the programme and tickets.
Saw it at the palace in 1977, 14 years old, while on a holiday course in Hastings with ef. Have loved it since. Great performance.
For years I have been looking for this version. I have the record and for me the best version of all. Thanks for having it here after looking for years.
Same here. For me it will always be the definitive version. My father bought the album in 1973 and he played it a lot, so it was the soundtrack to my childhood.
There is much to admire in this recording of JCS
I always thought it was a bit lifeless.
....and much to deplore in it :-(
We must be talking about two different recordings. It's awful.
I used to own the double cd of this and used to listen all the time. I really liked Paul Nicholas voice as Jesus he put so much passion into his singing my favourite was The Trial Before Pilate the lyrics Jesus sings everything is fixed he pauses then sings and you can't change it. I love how sad he sounds when he sings that lyric.
Imagine having to live up to Ian Gillian as Jesus.
Paul Jabara as King Herod gives me life
You can hear how very "camp" Jabara's portrayal of Herod must have been, playing up the fact that Herod Antipas didn't have any real power of his own and was not much more than a puppet ruler for the Romans.
The original brown album remains one of the five most important and impactful musical works in my life. After having heard this for the first time today, I can honestly say -- if not for the original album -- this would have zero impact on me. Truly, a strange thing...mystifying.
Same. I’m looking at that brown LP now and my dad’s 70’s Sony record player I listened to it on. This online version had to do as I opted not to take the two mini-fridge sized speakers he had when he passed away. My seven year old self came back to life today ❤
Saw this at the Palace Theatre in its first run, way back.. Paul Nicholas was spellbinding.
Magnificent!
Perhaps the most MUSICAL performance ever recorded. In addition to the singing, listen to the gorgeous orchestral accompaniment! Where could I find a CD of this? Or at least a high-quality FLAC download?

@@JCSZone I have registered and am awaiting approval. Thank you.
What i like in superstar he sings near the end " my mind is clearer now
Absolute high level music
Yes yes!
Such a friendly gospel
Ufff, great!
This is my third favorite version of JCS. After the movie and concept album
Hey man, you can post the Brazilian version? I like much of this version
please post the original cast staring patrick jude
It’s basically the same as the original but I think the pitch is a little higher.
Слушаю из России. Это великое произведение
This is the 1st. time that I’ve heard the London Stage Production. For What It Is..I Guess It’s Ok .
However Sad To Say I Don’t Feel The Same Emotional Pull & Power of The Concept Recording.
I think they chose to get back to basics with the London production. Both Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice really didn't like Tom O’Horgan's over-the-top production for the original Broadway cast. You can read more on that on our website: www.jesuschristsuperstarzone.com/discography/original-broadway-cast-1971/
Sorry, but I find this version mediocre as for the singers.
This didn’t age well at all. I suppose people at the time accepted Paul Nicholas because he had some name recognition and Ted Neeley hadn’t yet set the bar for the role of Jesus, but Stephen Tate is just dreadful as Judas. The guy sounds like a complete amateur. If you heard Murray Head and then listened to him, you’d wonder how he ever got cast.
This isn't the original cast. The album with the original cast was released in 1970.
This is interesting, but I gave it a thumbs down as it is NOT the original cast.
It's the original London cast John from the 1972 west end Production. That's how they bill them . Your thinking of the 69 concept album .
Like Paul Walsh already stated, this is the original London cast from 1972. The one you are referring to is the original cast of the concept recording with Ian Gillan as Jesus and Murray Head as Judas, however they were only featured on the album and they never performed it live. After Superstar premiered on Broadway in 1971 the first production that appeared in the UK was at the West End in London a year later so this is in fact the "original London cast".
TRUE!!!
@@tristanbray2184 this...is the london cast.
One of the best casts I've heard. Excellent acting and not overdone like in other casts, as much as I love them.
Tate and Dana have really soothing voices.
Wish there was a full double album for this. Thank you for publishing.
I totally disagree, I think all of the three leads are severely lacking in vocal ability.

@@JupiterThunder I don't know on what basis you make the statement that "this version is the only one performed as the writers intended." At any rate, I think most of the singing here is awful.
The best Musical and Rock Opera ever produced.
the fact that so many recordings swap songs bothers me, like how here Gethsemane is before Pilate's dream.
At first someone let me listen to JCS the concept album on a Sony Walkman (yes, that was along time ago). However, I had then this album as my first vinyl record of JCS. After which I have bought the concept album which is my favorite. But still I like many songs’ versions in this one. I think that “I don’t know how to love him” is one of the best.
Saw this in 1975 - great performance - never forget
The first few minutes of this is worth checking out as it seems to have actual footage of Paul Nicholas in the stage set up they used in the actual production: ruclips.net/video/Ng4Kz3hwhOg/видео.html
Vi essa Opera, em Londres, Desembro de 1973
I WAS THERE. I saw this in '72 in London. meh The best productions of Superstar were always the simplest. Few props and sets. Just the singers and the emotions. But Rice & LloydWebber don't know the Lord Himself. The other characters they had some insight into. My fav is the French rendition of Pilate's Dream. And Que Tu Recommence. Not in this original.
The Australian cast/show
at the same time run rings around this...
Sounds like a high school production, amateur hour
I really enjoyed listening to this
Own the movie and L.P.
I love this album was made to listen to it by my older brother who's
No longer with us.i don't care for this particular version at all.
Not a bad version, but can’t hold a candle to the original album.
Paul Nicholas - unequalled in the role before or since...
Listen to this as a child on my parents record player. Was looking for this version since 10 years ago. Of all the versions I've listened to trying to find it, feel this is the most musically pleasing of them all. Thanks for making this available.
Who recorded all of these? And why is there always just 10-12 songs and not the whole production?
Different production companies. Back in those days it was very expensive to record a double album so most companies chose to only record a selection of songs.
This is not the original cast of singers from the album.
This is the original London cast from 1972 that played at the West End. You might be referring to the original concept cast from 1970 starring Ian Gillan and Murray Head (sometimes also referred to as original London cast).
❤️
How bad was everyone else who auditioned in order for Stephen Tate to get cast?
😂
Seriously.
Guess Anne Hathaway shouldn't have got her Oscar either for les mis and Lea Salongha should have been cast.... this is theatre not a concert recording and was all about the acting - apparently he was electric to watch
World class actor. If u saw him it'd make sense.
The Original cast recording is far superior to this. This is pretty lame.👎
This Judas is Bleh
