I had the pleasure of sitting third row at Herbie Hancock last fall, with a perfect view of Vinnie's drumkit. Easily the greatest concert I have ever seen. And watching Vinnie play, I never realized how much I've stolen from him, or how much I've ATTEMPTED to steal lol! I grew up listening to "Joe's Garage," and rewatching the "Weckl/Colaiuta/Gadd" drum battle countless times for years. And man, Vinnie has shown absolutely zero signs of slowing down, judging from this video from 2015, and when I saw him in October of 2017. He has amassed such a rich vocabulary and prowess on this instrument, that he has the technical and musical headroom for making musical decisions in pretty much any situation/genre. From Zappa, to Sting, to Peter Gabriel, to Chaka Khan, to Megadeth, to Boyz II Men, to Faith Hill, Vinnie does it ALL!
Well he's been musically impressive and better than everyone since '78 maybe, but I think he has made some wise changes, and learned a lot in the last 40 years. Vinnie himself would probably cringe at the footage of him playing his kit with the cymbals 7 feet in the air, and the toms at a 45 degree angle.
uʍop ǝpᴉsdn ǝʇoɹ ǝuop ᴉ zlol dude, come on man! Since 2000???? Research his discography. He's always been "good." In fact he's been one of the best ever! Lol!
Vinnie is post-human! He operates tempo in a mystic way, man… it's not about drumming anymore, he is doing magic, it's like witnessing Pollock painting about the big bang, on air, with the etheric colors of the untouchable… filling the spaces with those rhythmic ideas, he is, during the execution of his art, a God… a God…
Wrong! Vinnie doesn't wipe his butt like everybody else either. With that hand-speed and limb independence he wipes it cleaner than you will ever wipe yours in under 10 seconds, using both hands one directly in the doodoo-cave and one in the hairy regions of the inner butt-cheeks where dingleberries might reside, DONE! lol I'll bet you anything Vinnie will kick your ass even in an asswiping competition. Then you'll realize he truly is an alien from the future. Also, it's not a matter of muscle sweat but brain-sweat to become a great artist. It's not how many physical pushups you practice but how many push-ups of the imagination can you transfer to the physical realm of flesh and blood and oxygen. To play on Vinnie's level, to have that kind of instantly accessible concentration, you have to learn how to relax like a Shaolin or Yoga master or you'll be out-of-breath and sweating buckets within 2 minutes.
I was wondering about the cymbals too. It appears he's switched to Paiste & the collaborated on some type of cool 602 cymbals. When he steps the hi hats you can hear what nice cymbals those are.
So dull tune.. long saxophone solo, tablas, and ontop of that.. increased tempo!? Wtf is this? Vinnie did what he could on it but... Save Vinnie for something better than this project!
Best drum set player on planet earth.
i have to agree

hahaha! you are so spot on! love the Billy Cobham spectrum/Alex Van Halen hot for teacher shuffle at the end
He's been this good since at least 2000... and by this good, I mean the best.
What? No mate, more like he's been this good since he first went on record in like '78.

ive never seen like this top view of his playing!! it is so helpful watching his motions!!
Loving those fills going to take them now.
No one plays music like Vinnie.
So many younger drummers are obsessed with triple bass drum pedals and metal. They miss out on so much.

I think you're onto something...or on something...can't tell =/
Why "or" instead of "both and"?
lol, nah, you pretty much nailed my feelings in a strange way...good stuff man

+Laguna Drumfest At the SF Jazz venue, there is a balcony with seating *behind* the stage. Just don't spill a beer on the musicians. hahaha
hahahahahahahahaha thanks for sharing!!!
esse cara é fera demais
I love!
awesomeness
Judging by the fact that there is a chart, not his drums and the ending, Vinnie is probably reading, without a rehearsal. Wow.
Every time I listen to this, it gets better and better. Does anyone know if this track can be found on an album?
Good hope, the album name is the same. But you can find various performances of the same on youtube in different settings
Vinnie!
MOOOOOOOOOOOOONSTER VINNIE...
3:31 -> still got it
what drums is he playing? The snare has a Yamaha head!
Them some Happy Cymbals
does anybody know what exact model of cymbals is vinnie using here? I love them, especially the ride cymbal
They look like the new Paiste 602s to me- Vinnie did a few promo videos for them too. They are all up here on youtube.
Damian Quadro no they are Paiste traditionals best cymbals ever
Paiste formula 602
@@antoniomanuelpiquer4083 No they are the Paiste signature traditionals...I own some!!
I was wondering about the cymbals too. It appears he's switched to Paiste & the collaborated on some type of cool 602 cymbals. When he steps the hi hats you can hear what nice cymbals those are.
+Sean Swift Vinnie endorses Paiste.
what song is this?
what cymbals is vinnie using here? 602's?
Paiste Traditionals.

Not bad. But can he play the drum solo in "Wipeout"?
It comes down to vinnie or chris coleman for best drumer on the planet.
What cymbals is he using in this video?
+Paul Baker These ought to be Paiste Traditionals.
Lorenz Müller - thanks!
@@pbaker7160 Again Signature traditioinals Traditionals are a little different
4:25
Yeah, Vinnie's scary...
Chris Potter= Sax?
+Savantjazzcollective yep! Such a recognizable sound!
Thee tah-blah! Thee tah-blah!
woooooooooOOOOOO ! ! !
He's playing Paiste Traditionals instead of 602's... interesting...
Vinny wring's that little kits neck,it should be illegal to scoot like that on such a tiny kit ;)
It ought to be against the law to drum that well.
But I'm glad it isn't.
not jazz
So dull tune.. long saxophone solo, tablas, and ontop of that.. increased tempo!? Wtf is this? Vinnie did what he could on it but... Save Vinnie for something better than this project!
These are some incredible tune understand it before jugding it
