One thing that makes this duet so intertwined is that while commonly the lower voice is the melody, and the harmony is higher up, here Shakey sings the harmony and Esme sings the melody. (Or at least that is how i perceive it). It really gives them a feeling of being intertwined.
Finally someone does this song! Not the place I expected to see it but I'll take it! This guy is a wealth of talent, and a master of improv, no two performances are the same.
@@cz75fanatic That's the funny thing with Shakey is he plays these songs so differently everytime, and we all have our own favourite versions. His ability to make every performance seem like it's "the" performance is remarkable. I thought the audiotree performance was "the one", and wasn't interested in seeing any more. Then I saw more, and wasn't interested in seeing him with a drummer. Then I saw more, and wasn't interested in seeing him with a full band, then I saw more. The dude never fails to impress. As far as this song goes, the charisma and chemistry far outweigh any other considerations. But I went and checked out the hangout version, it's great! Check out this song, it's a fave of mine, and the rest of the performance is gold. Peace! ruclips.net/video/9lerW7bCbeg/видео.html
you can tell that those two were having a good time singing the song, and I loved the song by itself, but the thing that made this review great for me is when Mike couldn't help himself and added in a little bit of his flavor with it. I can't speak for everybody else, but I thought that was awesome. Its your channel bro. If you are feeling it, then I say go for it!!!
YO THAT WAS INCREDIBLE. Honestly I haven’t really found a version that I like of that song other than the Pandora version. But this one was CRAZYYYY. Man he’s so good ..
Had the fortune of discovering/seeing Shakey before he “blew up”.I caught a show of his at the basement in Columbus and he was killing it so hard that the crowd for the main venue upstairs walked out and came down to watch Shakey! Got to chat with him for a few after the show and he was really down to earth, nothing but respect for Shakey graves ✊🏻 Ended up catching Esme a couple years later at the same venue and she wasn’t too happy when I requested this song.. She said “I’ll never sing that song again”…needless to say, I felt like a jackass.. anyway, she puts on a great show as well, wish them both the best!
I tried to look up why she would feel this way but came up with nothing. I might sound clueless even asking that but I just have no idea what happened with them.
I have a slight nagging feeling that Shakey started doing heroin right around this timeframe and Esme left. His songs and style changed right around this time. He also has a tattoo on his forearm that appeared in the bowling alley videos that look suspicious.
Idk why she felt that way, I didn’t feel it was my place to ask and be “that guy” lol and idk about shakey using.. never got that vibe myself but nothing surprises me anymore.. honestly I think they had a romance and for whatever reason it went south. Esme seemed genuinely hurt in her response and she had recently shaved her head and her music also went a very different direction. Both were very kind tho, and a pleasure to see/meet 🍻
There are a number of versions with Esmee, all slightly different, he adds a drummer, then adds another drummer and plays electric...all wonderful. Thanks MP.
I know!!! To all you said! An old friend of my late husband's popped back into my life after 20 years. We all share a love of music, and he showed me this Shakey Graves video. This was about a year or so ago. I had never heard of them! This song knocked me off my feet!!!🤯 I wish my husband had been able to hear it. He would have absolutely adored it as much as I do!! It deserves some recognition!💜💜💜🥰 BTW, first time viewer, and I totally enjoyed your video! Your reaction to it is exactly the same as mine was!!!😍💜
I remember walking into a bar in Austin about 10 years ago and hearing this band in the back that sounded really great. Once I got my beer from the bar, I went back to the stage to find Shakey all alone on the stage with the suitcase drum setup and a guitar sound you could lean into. Not only is he a great singer/song writer, he is a crowd pleasure. It's almost like a concert/standup, cause he's funny and confident on stage. I saw him play a sold out show at the Fox theater in Oakland not to long before covid hit. I love what he is doing and can't wait till I see him again. I'm a little bias because I heard it live, but "If Not For You" has been one of my favorite songs of his for a while. 🤘 ruclips.net/video/Tp9DADjYKl8/видео.html
First heard Shaky on eTown; the finale of that show was he and Heather Maloney singing "You're the One That I Want," from Grease, and it is amazing - worth a listen.
I learned about Shakey from your channel and was supposed to see him in Wilmington on Sunday but he postponed the show. I understand his decision but damn am I jealous of you! Enjoy the amazing performance!
Yesssssss!!!! I honestly thought you’ve done this one before. My favorite guitar player, reacting to my…… favorite guitar player!! Thank you for this. I hope this opens doors to our Texas music scene for you. Also, if you don’t know, Alejandro “Shakey” was in Friday Night Lights, the series. For a hot minute. Love ya dude. Play on!!
YES!! I discovered Skakey about 3 years now... oh how stoked I'd be to get to see him perform live. Please upload some footage , hope you have a blast!
I stumbled across this a couple months ago after Roll The Bones, and I love all the same things about this that you do. Not just the harmonies but the energy between the two of them. It really is something special. The hand clapping the foot stomping, perfection. I'm in love with Esme
I saw them perform this live the DAY they wrote it at the Fox theater in Boulder Colorado. She’s originally from a folk band out of Boulder called Paper Bird, which is sadly no longer together. Their harmonies and old time country feel remain unparalleled for me
You need to check out the eTown version of this song. They play with what I think is Shakey's usual drummer (you know.. when he's not doing his one-man-band thing); the harmonies he adds allows Shakey to use his raspy higher voice more, I love the energy the drums add to the song and is just glorious
Thanks for the post. I haven't bounced this much since listening to Michelle Shocked short, Sharp Shocked great album! I will definitely add them to my playlist.
Check out Esme Patterson's "Wantin Ain't Gettin". Not the most interesting guitar song but it's pretty heart breaking. She needs more of a push. Be the man.
Funny story. I work at music store and we sell PRS's and every time we get a new model in... in a few days i can bring up a new React vid and you'll be playing the same guitar lol. this is no different. We got the new HB Piezo in that same color and everything. awesome guitar lol
Michael, I would really like to hear your reaction to Beth Hart and Joe Bonamassa doing I'd Rather Go Blind. Be sure to watch the Live From Amsterdam version. Bonamassa's guitar solo is simply astonishing. I would love to hear your explanation of how he moves up the fretboard to create the effect. It doesn't appear that he is following either the pentatonic scale or a major or minor scale.
Great video Michael. I'm glad you found Esme Patterson, she is one of my favorites... she can do anything from a soft ballad, to something that rocks. It was hard to choose one, there are many good videos around, but this one, ruclips.net/video/0FcRZ8E6ZuA/видео.html , she performs two songs... (1) Feel Right, (2) Francine. If you want to pick one, I'd pick the first song, Feel Right. Esme's passion as a performer comes through loud and clearly.
Hello Michael long time RUclips fan would really love to see you do a video for either Amos Lee or JJ Grey. Not sure if you have already but much appreciated if not sir.
Beautiful one, yes... if you like those magical and musical atmospheres between two souls, I recommend you go and see The Tallest Man On Earth live duet with Amanda Bergson ( ruclips.net/video/7V8Vk8CMe7g/видео.html ). Some of his other solo pieces are absolutely great too, by the way !
Will u listen to Shakey Graves~ The Waters? Even if u don't use it check it out. Cause that's how i found you when u did roll the bones and since then you've actually introduced me to a couple different songs id never heard and artist id not gave a chance. That's what's so great about music, doesnt matter the genre or even the era it brings people together. So i appreciate you buddy.
Just want to add I'm not sure why but Shakey Graves acoustically to me is better when they start adding the electronics in the different sound samples and it takes away from what he does
Love all the various versions of this that are on RUclips. Reminds me a lot of Shovels and Rope. Check out their song "St Anne's Parade" live on Lightning 100 ruclips.net/video/R56sGJAGUvc/видео.html
I've been a fan of your channel for a while now, but have been binge watching it the last two or three days. Got a song/artist suggestion: check out Andrew Duhon's "No Man's Land" (ruclips.net/video/FGXxPhjadOc/видео.html) -- he's a singer-songwriter out of New Orleans, still relatively small time, but I've been playing the grooves off this song for a year now--amazing lyrics.

Instead of a first dance, my husband and I sang this song as duet at our wedding so this song has a dear place in my heart.
Awesome!!!!❤❤❤❤
It's an amazing duet song - congrats!
One thing that makes this duet so intertwined is that while commonly the lower voice is the melody, and the harmony is higher up, here Shakey sings the harmony and Esme sings the melody. (Or at least that is how i perceive it).
It really gives them a feeling of being intertwined.
Can you share the video? :)
Finally another Shakey song! Living in Austin, I've seen him play more than any other musician. One of the best musicians out there!
I'd love to see him on Joe Rogan. They'd get along so well
I was lucky to have seen Shakey and Esme perform this live. Best night ever!
Finally someone does this song! Not the place I expected to see it but I'll take it! This guy is a wealth of talent, and a master of improv, no two performances are the same.
The live version from Hangout Fest is better to me. I'm not a fan of the duet iteration of the song.

I saw him at First Ave 3-4 years ago. Opened the show and crushed it after breaking a string 10 seconds in. So much good energy in his show. Have fun!
I have loved this song for YEARS!
I couldn't help but smile with them the whole time.
Vocal harmonies make this song. No theory needed, just pure feel.
