“You have been well trained, my young apprentice.”
So, Sidious is basically complimenting himself instead of Maul 😂
Never thought about that until now. Wow, narcissism really runs strong with Palpatine/Sidious
No he’s reassuring him that when the time comes, his training will serve him well and he will not hesitate to perform. Its the same thing we tell soldiers that haven’t been in combat
HE IS THE SENATE after all.

I only just realized Darth Maul has a soothing voice.
His voice actor Peter Serafinowicz does alot of commercials! He does have an awesome voice, super talented too.
Chris Montgomery Yes brother. His voice was cool :-))
Hell yea. That voice is tight :-))
Chris Montgomery Sam Witwer is a better darth maul
MandaloreMaul77 Part of Witwer's job as a voice actor should be to copy the canon voice from the movie so I guess he didn't do a good job then.
Maul's voice is terrifying given his design. You expect some demonic growl from an unthinking beast but instead you get a soothing, thoughtful voice that just oozes "I'm already five steps ahead of you".

Would be real awkward if a bunch of jedi happened to fly past that balcony while on jedi business.

flies by on a speeder, casully sees two siths having a conversation *oi look, what's there? shall we have a word with them? Good day sir... what is your business here?*
I think making him a quiet character this way, and giving not too much screen time has contributed in making him so memorable.
I wish the lightsaber fight at the end of Episode 1 included more dialogue, like the original trilogy had. I wish the Jedi had behaved more like "detectives" during that fight, asking questions in between lightsaber strikes, trying to find out who this mysterious "phantom menace" WAS, trying to ascertain information, and not just defend themselves.
In the original trilogy, a lightsaber duel was not merely a physical battle, but also a battle of wits, passing of information, trying to trip up your opponent, with WORDS, not just clever saber moves.
The duel at the end of Ep. 1 would have been SO much greater, had it been a chance for Darth Maul to offer all his dialogue, for the Jedi to question him as they battled him, for the audience to see a new battle of the wits in the Star Wars universe play out on the big screen.
But, alas, there was no witty battle to be seen...just a bunch of "fancy" stunts.
Even when the plasma "wall" separates Maul from Jinn for those few brief minutes, they REMAIN quiet, even though they can still see and hear each other and communicate!
With NOTHING to do, they don't even TALK. They just sit there, staring at each other, like children, until the wall turns off and they can fight again.
An intelligent, wise, adult "Jedi" would have used those few minutes to size up his/her opponent before the wall opened back up again, to study the enemy's moves and mind. But, Jinn didn't even do THAT; he closed his eyes, and sat on the floor, putting himself in a WEAKER position, clearly, since he lost that fight, ultimately.
I was OK with Maul being quiet. Ok.
I was OK with lightsaber Maul being quiet. OK.
But, "plasma wall" Maul NEEDS to say SOMETHING! He can't just sit behind a wall of plasma for 3 whole minutes and say NOTHING! All the mystery about him is GONE in those 3 minutes. And, in another 3 minutes, he's totally DEAD. AT LEAST, before Maul dies, in those 3 minutes he is protected by the plasma wall, let's HEAR HIS STORY! Let's hear his evil plan, SOMETHING! But, NO, he just paces back and forth, and stares, like an idiot, with NOTHING to say to his enemies when he finally is given a chance to face them.
At least Darth Vader used to TELL you his plans and his motivations for fighting you. Maul just fights you for fighting's sake, no real motivation behind Maul at all.
Not to mention his demonic appearance and double lightsaber
I absolutely love Darth Maul’s voice. This line is one of my favorite lines in Star Wars. I often come here just to hear it and listen to Darth Maul’s mysterious voice.

I kinda wish Maul had a bigger role. Clone Wars did a good job at showing who he is.
Well email Lucas the one who made star wars and ask him if he can make a movie just on Darth maul. Be a good idea and he might not do it but still try and see, better than nothing.
That's a good idea, honestly. We should make a petition. lol
Alan Lightner yes! We should make a petition!
But might be easier if online that everyone can get to it and email it to him that way.
Hictory Luina what are you talking about? Lucas doesn't own star wars anymore, plus why would you want him to make more movies? he's a terrible screenwriter
Just blows my mind, that voice Ian Mcdiarmid invented. Dude's a legend, we hear Sidious here, but Ian manages to make him sound young, in Return of the Jedi his gravely voice reflects his advanced age.

How does jar jar binks have more lines than darth maul in this movie.
FinJproductions idk George probably wanted it that way
Darth Maul is supposed to be a mysterious character, so it only makes sense that he barely speaks
because Jar Jar is the real sith lord.
Good question.
Even though Lucas haters got butthurt over Jar Jar, he actually plays a bigger part to the overall story than Darth Maul. The Chancellor was able to manipulate a naive creature into proposing he be given emergency powers. Great storytelling, unlike the Disney garbage of recent years.
Darth Maul is one of the coolest Star Wars characters!
That's mostly thanks to The Clone Wars and Sam Witwer. Previously he was as overrated and boring as Boba Fett. I admit I was sceptical when it was first announced he's being brought back, it seemed like a fan service. It still kinda is but nevertheless TCW turned him into a very interesting villain, possibly one of the most interesting ones in all Star Wars. Not to mention Sam Witwer who's just awesome as Maul.

James Luceno is a master storyteller. I Love that novel.
Darth Maul is my favourite Star Wars villain of all time. He doesn’t need to speak all the time to have good presence or a cool looking mask to look intimidating. It comes naturally for any brilliant villain.
The moment when you realize Darth Maul had more dialogue in the movie he cameo'd in than the one where he was the featured villain...
He had more dialogue in the clone wars than both films combined
Sucks. I just know i loved his voice in phantom menace. The voice Sam Witwer came up with good too, but i love how soothing his voice is here yet he's such a savage in his facial expressions etc. When he fights Obi-Wan and Jinn

In this dialogue, Darth Sidious plans to encourage Maul to confront the Jedi on Tatooine, with the argument that he had been well trained and that the Jedi would be no match for him, becomes evident. Dude I love how Maul never breaks eye contact with Sidious and how Sidious never makes eye contact. It shows the directionality of the relationship or power.
Such a soothing and attractive voice! I’d just listen to him talking for ages and ages.
Even though he did not have many lines, Peter Serafinowicz did an excellent job with Mauls voice. It’s sounds so sinister yet calm and calculating just like an assassin. It sucks that they didn’t use his voice for Solo.
I remember watching the clones wars made him a generic over the top villian
Well that's because Sam Witwer makes Peter look like an amature.
@@alexdeghost2729 not necessarily, it’s not really a fair assessment since Peter had only had 1-2 lines to work with and Sam has had years to voice Maul. Also let’s not forget that Sam is also technically imitating Peters voice.
It's because Maul was only trained as a Sith assassin but not taught any of the deeper ideals of the Sith.
Not sure if you know but they hired Serafinowicz and recorder lines for SOlo - loater they apologised to him and used Sam Writer.
"At last we will have revenge."
And bitterly his last lines upon dying in Rebels is him hoping Luke can avenge him.
I'd suggest that it was in that last moment when he finally wasn't bitter.
Maul is still alive in the Legends continuity. The canon Maul seems broken and demoralized. Legends Maul was pure Sith through and through.
Maul's original voice actor (Peter Serafinowicz) did a pretty good job overdubbing Ray Park in this scene, especially when you consider that the only direction George Lucas gave to him while recording his lines was "Sound evil."
It helps when your voice is naturally cool like his
Fun Fact: Darth Plagueis was still alive at this point.
Peter Serafinowicz is a genius.
+David Harrison i had no idea he did the voice until now :D
Niall McBride I feel like he is underrated.
+David Harrison Does this scene suggest something genius?
+josevonbuergenwader2 listen and look at Maul. He is a badass of incomprehensible proportions. That takes some skill.
***** Incomprehensible proportions, huh? I guess thats why he had Obi Wan hanging from a ledge with no weapon and still got himself cut in half. Yeah, his awe- inspiring menace is truly beyond debate.
Darth Plaguies was spying on both of them in each scene ;)
I think Plaguis was long dead by this scene.
tarden132 If you reference wookieepedia Plaguis was killed shortly before Palpatine took office as Chancellor.
According to Jedipedia the Darth Plagueis Novel (written by James Luceno) is part of the Star Wars legends continuity, formerly known as the "Expanded Universe," and is therefore not official canon.
gordongecko1975 He's mentioned in episode III by sidious as you probably know. Also, as long as there are made no movies about the events before episode I, you can just as well consider that part of the EU canon
tarden132 Plageuis died at the end of Episode 1.
Fun Fact: This was the very first scene filmed during production.
Poor Maul, he was so excited to reveal himself to the Jedi and have revenge.
Talk about a mistake to kill a character! This dude should have been the main villain (other than Sidious) in the prequels. I think he could have easily been the face of the Sith with Dooku being the political face and Grievous being the military leader. It could have worked so easily and been amazing!!!
He's still alive
James Cooper I know, i'm talking about in the actual prequels though. They didn't decide to bring him back to life until TCW series which was many years after TPM. I've heard many people say that "killing" Maul in episode 1 was the greatest mistake of the prequels, and I think it is evident because George brought him back after him officially being dead for like 10 years.
there can only be two
RalixBlaster7 Yeah, I think it would be really easy to reimagine Dooku's character as just a "puppet politician" and not a Sith Lord
I think having Maul killed off and Sidious having a new apprentice in the next film works fine. When you really look at it Sidious has a new apprentice each film during the prequals. Then in Return of the Jedi he shows he's willing to replace Vader as well.
0:24 I love this shot very much. It captures the enigmatic, yet depraved, nature of the Sith...Cloaked, and shrouded, before the public eyes.
Every time I revisit TPM I appreciate Serafinowicz’s voice, and I’m impressed at Witwer’s rendition - I think he does an older, traumatized, and unstable version of Serafinowicz’s Maul very well, with just two lines to work from!
Would’ve liked to hear Ray Park’s take for TPM as well. Maybe the original footage is out there somewhere.
It’s always interesting to see Palpatine with his hood up on this scene. I think it makes sense in-universe, though. He had to hide from any undetected observers.
I wish there was more of Coruscant like this. I really liked the beginning of Attack of the Clones just for that.
His voice is badass
his voice in TCW is even better lol. It is somehow almost the same voice, just much angrier and in season 7, much more scared.
I love Darth Maul SO MUCH. He is just one of those Characters that is so badass, hes probably the character with the least amount of lines and had the biggest impact on the franchise.
It's crazy how Palpatine and Maul could walk in full sith garb and not a single Jedi sensed their dark side presence.
He has a soothing voice and is well spoken. Wouldn’t expect that of such an aggressive sith
A moment of silence for those who don't know Maul survived.
I feel the rage in Darth Maul’s voice, as soothing as it is. Warms the blood.
Everyone clowns these movies back in the 2000s but now rewatching them, they are super entertaining
FINALLY I HEARD HIS VOICE, i can now die i peace
No homo but I loved this man. I'm 36 and will say out loud that this is the biggest waste of character in the history of cinema.
He had everything and should of been in all 3. Had a major battle with Anakin when he grew which led the Sith to take him as apprentice.
Just such a wasted character. Left me devastated in the cinema. I still watch phantom just for his tiny scenes.
"ANAKIN , DROPPPPP"
Yeah I totally agree, He could have been the prequel version of Darth Vader. It was still stupid of George to kill him that quick.
+Allan Romero I mean how can you make someone that awesome. He is one of the most amazing villains of all time. 5 mins is all he got ha
+Allan Romero Well he didn't die, if you watch the CGI Clone wars series, he has a sweet arc to bhimself

"i was apprentice to the most powerful being in the galaxy once, i was destined to become... so much more"
Growing up watching Star Wars I could have sworn Darth Maul never spoke. Rewatching it feels like I'm watching brand new scenes everytime.
same
I honestly think that Darth Maul was like the most fully trained dark lord of the sith besides Darth Sidious. Count Dooku turned to the dark side late and Darth Vader was powerful but still could be turned good.
Palpatine didn't bother to train Vader after Mustafar. He viewed him as a failed project and purposely gave Vader no actual Sith training after he was burned.
As much as I love Maul, Vader is far superior to Maul in the force. I mean, he did kill Sidious after all, so why did he need his training in the first place?
Darth Maul was the only of Sidious’ three apprentices to have never been a Jedi.
A few years late, but Darth Sidious was actually a very lazy Sith. The only student he only ever truly trained was Darth Maul. Vader and Dooku were just former Jedi that he seduced to the Darkside. While he claimed that they were his apprentices, he never really taught them anything.
@@kgunitkeese17 honestly I don't think he had anything to teach them. Plagueis was a true sith master who spent his time overwhelmingly researching the force whereas sidious was an emperor who happened to be a sith master.
I liked the extended dialogue in this scene with Sidious saying: "Everything is going as planned. Soon the Republic will be in my control". I can only assume it was cut because it may have given too much away of what his intentions were too early. And people who were younger or not familiar with him being Palpatine would have connected the dots.
Maul was truly the best villain
I always loved Darth Maul when I was younger, I even had his doubled blades lightsaber (even tho I always hurt myself with it). He is so cool and mysterious

+Manilla Ice I'd say twice, but he did train the man to kill him
He lost to Maul. Maul was just taunting him after launching him down a hole and Obi Wan got the lucky shot
Having the limited screen time is precisely why Maul was such a fascinating character. He was supposed be mysterious, thats the whole point of the Sith, secrecy. Jaws was scary because you saw the shark only a few times at the right moments.

Darth Maul's one line is better written than the whole episodes 7-8-9 storyline
Wow 😂
A couple of interesting things here. Sidious and Maul have a clear mutual respect for one another. Plagueis is spying on their conversation here because he felt Sidious had a unique and disturbing relationship with Maul. When Sidious calls Maul his Apprentice, it discomforts Plagueis. I guess he trusted Sidious too much to ever truly think he would violate the Rule of Two by training Maul.
This would be a red flag to any other Sith, but Plagueis carries on like nothing happens and soon after is attacked in his sleep, prompting a short duel in the Force, where Sidious kills him.
Plagueis was far too trusting, Sidious threw it all on the line for Darth Maul’s training and existence as a third Sith Lord, and Maul himself never actually dies in the Legends continuity; Maul goes on to rebuild his power base and reinstate the Sith likely after Grandmaster Luke Skywalker is dead. These three Sith accomplished very much for the Banite order.
Good to know that about maul. Sidious was an opportunist, he didn't believe much in the sith codes he was just a sadist. Which is why the rule of two doesn't really work. Because sidious killed his Master in his sleep not in combat
sorry buddy but maul coming back with robot legs after being literally bisected isn't true legends. @@soulstealer567 Yeah, no. Lucas planned to include Maul one way or another before TCW or the Disney buyout. I don’t care what YOU consider “true legends” because the facts are that Maul’s resurrection and the books/comics surrounding him were created and publicized within Legends.
