The thing Minecraft horror lacks is subtly and build up in its horror, and I can't believe I'm using this movie as an analogy, but The Shining is a brilliant example of Subtle horror and build up, and despite the fact the movie itself is a ghost story taking place in an isolated hotel, I think Minecraft horror mods should take inspiration from its methods, i.e. slow build up with implications and changes in the world of what's to come, before a sinking feeling, and the payoff taking place

Minecraft horror can work. It just needs to work with minecraft, not against it. You cant just make a horror mod that doesn't look like the MC style and works against the horror people already feel when playing the game.
The Warden works because it kinda plays into the mystery of the ancient city, the unknown and the lonlyness that people can feel when playing Minecraft.
The original dweller was a good idea, but the trend just went in the wrong direction.

The warden is the best vanilla dweller we have

    • @lasercraft32
      @lasercraft32 7 месяцев назад +63

The Warden is honestly _really_ well designed.
      - It looks menacing, but in an odd sort of way it also looks derpy and cute.
      - Its terrifying, but not enough to give children existential nightmares.
      - Its overpowered, but its not _invincible,_ which makes it scarier. Fighting back won't help much, and that is more impactful than not being able to fight back at all.
      - The fact that its hard to kill and can appear anywhere if you set off a shrieker makes it feel more like a force of nature than a normal creature.
      - It can attack the player through walls using its sonic blast, instead of just being able to break through blocks.
      - Its overly animated... Which makes it stand out and feel unnatural compared to Minecraft's usual simplistic animations (although this effect is lessened because of the newer mobs like the frog, camel, and sniffer).
      - Its vibration/sound mechanics make it extremely unique, and encourages the player to have to sneak around (making it slower to escape from).
      - The Darkness effect (combined with the heartbeat) messes with your senses, makes it harder to see, and basically makes it feel like your character is having a panic attack (The Warden's sounds can also be heard from farther away, even if you can't see it, you know its nearby and it gets louder the closer it is to you). The glowing parts of the Warden also show through the darkness effect, so you can _always_ see it.
      - The fact that it only appears in the Deep Dark means it can be avoided, so it doesn't alienate players who are sensitive to horror.
      - And of course, having an entire biome dedicated to it also sets the scene for it, by directly correlating the absence of life in the area to the Warden itself, making it feel like a terrifying force to be reckoned with.

Having monsters (ones that don't fit in the Minecraft world) spawn anywhere and at anytime is just annoying, not scary.
Sorry for this massive paragraph, but what I am trying to say is that Minecraft horror mods should be able to work perfectly alongside the already scary aspects of the game. 1. They're all the same

I actually like many of the dweller type monsters, but they have to have their own MO (so not flame dwellers). The One who Watches is earrapey sure but I think his redlight greenlignt invisibility mechanic is cool and the dev's stages update definitely took some of the pain out of the experimence. Obviously the Cave Dweller and reimagined versions are classic even for their relatively short times being around, same with FtF.
I also enjoy all three entities made by the Man From the Fog dev. You can tell all of them had some thought in care plus actually pair up decently well with eachother, the Man being a constant oppressive force while Apollyon and the Knocker are dangerous but still fairly manageable threats which arent meant to be overly challenging in comparison.
Some of the other mods off the top of my head from this trend I approve of is Dangers in Darkness, Creeping woods, eyes in the dark, Beware the Rain, and a few other more niche less dwellerish monster and horror mods.
There's also the entirely unrelated mods like Born in Chaos and Graveyards which I'd love to see more like. Spooky creepy atmospheric and world building mods which give real content to work with beyong just a monster is always fun and desireable.
To sum up my thoughts, I like that this trend did happen but oversaturation and cheap copies plague it like many horror trends in many medias. Its up to the community to steer it on the right track and encourage creativity and good game design over just RUclips bait. There's multiple very promising projects in the work at the moment such as the works of IDKsomeguy, Kihec's Siren Head, and the creator of TOWW's Slender game mode. There's more I could list like the updates to the Silence or the upcoming mods from the dev of Sadface but this should make the point.
Let's criticize what should be criticized, and appreciate what has something to offer. Throwing everything under the same umbrella rarely ends well.

Like, you're just going about your business mining, farming or whatever and there is a small, random chance that some sort of weird unexplainable event happens. A lot of the copies don't have any specific spawn conditions, and are pretty much omnipresent. If you wanna have spooky mobs, give them specific conditions in which they appear, like locations, biomes, player actions, time of day, etc. So as to have a promise of safety waiting for you somewhere.

A horror mod I'd make would be based of something that really used to horrify me; the deep vast caves of 1.18. Of course, I've gotten over that fear, but it's because they became predictable, just like the Depths in ToTK, or an even more specific example, the polygonal chaos from B3313.
There's just something about huge dark and unpredictable places that just horrifies me, and I wanna expand on that concept.
P.D.: I don't think I've ever actually been scared of any Minecraft entity. All the fear has came from (I know this might sound cliché) the unknown.

They master the art of looking cool and scary of the unknown for awhile until you figure them out, which is too easy because they are too predictable, and we all know we added them in and they are a mob so where's the horror?
No! I say! Create one who is not the master of being the unknown, but being feared because it is known!
You can be scared of the dark and the unknown within but that shatters your fear once you know it by turning on a light.
Instead, make one that even when you turn on the light it's presence should be feared, by knowledge catering it.
It should be a feared just by installing the dude, having second thoughts, hesitate to progress and only the truly brave will complete the game, now that's horror!
Let the Mob break the barriers that hold back other mobs, let it seeth into not just the seed, but beyond the seed.
It will remember, it will adapt to become unpredictable but fair enough that it's logical. This thing should linger awhile even after to delete/remove it from your world.
It should change the whole game, so that building 3 blocks up won't stop it, you MUST innovate, change the game!
Let it seeth into the main menu!
Let it seeth even in the pause screen!
The goal is to limit the player, let them not catch a big breath but a minor breath! When they truly are safe it will only be a ticking time bomb before it will evolve (Think Parasite Mod), let them know that safety is temporarily until the entity is deleted, give the player freedom, but also let them know they have to Git Gud if they want to survive in any world they make, even the main menu!
If they want it out of their game!
Let it be a hassle to delete!
It's presence shall be felt everywhere!
Screw cheap jumpscares it has player UI tools!

The only horror mods I’ve adored for Minecraft are the MCSX (Minecraft: PS1 Edition) modpack and Infernø’s Herobrine mod. Because they’re not blasting repetitive jumpscares, screeching noises, and reskinned models chasing you. Rather they turn Minecraft into a paranoid schizophrenia simulator where you’re questioning whether your eyes are playing on you or if there’s something lurking in the fog and watching you

at least the slumbering omen isnt just a copypaste and ahve its own thing by having him spawn minion ocasionally , infecting mob , ,added "the lost one" into the modpack , and so on

I really liked the animalistic behavior of the OG Cave Dweller, he was unpredictable, he could easily kill you, but you could also just as easily con him, it also kinda contrast with The Man From The Fog, who feels more inescapable, and malicious then his cave counterpart, they fit really well together, but thats just my opinion

Minecraft horror mods have unfortunately been ruined. I don't blame the guy that made the cave dweller mod, but the cave dweller was supposed to stay the cave dweller. All these other "dwellers" are complete bs. It's just reskin of cave dweller.

While I agree with you I think you didn't go much into why the eras have such a difference in quality. It makes it seem like "old good, new bad" is all you have as a point, when it's clear you have some more nuanced takes on it. Unrelated but I had a fun mod idea, though no idea how feasible it is. It's a monster that disguises itself as other mobs and spawns in groups with them with visible seams in the model so you can tell them apart if you look closely. When you get close or attack the seams open and inside is a mouth that has a tongue that attaches to the player and sucks away their hunger rather than health. It's just a spur of the moment though tho.

What if there was an entity who’s only goal was to steal from your base. It would look ghoulish and unnerving, but never directly attack the player. It would learn to open doors and ways to hide in what it deems the player’s base(maybe it recognizes the coordinates the player frequents the most/sleeps in).

The modding community of Minecraft (to this side) is actually pretty close to the modding community of FNF.
Half baked copy-pasted formulate'd MODS that just want that sweet clout and attention, before fading into obscurity for the next "big" thing.

The only recent one that I can think of that's any good is The One Who Watches after its most recent update. The fact that it just psychologically bullies you and actually stalks you throughout potentially an entire playthough rather than just constantly running after you and spamming loud ass noises is great. The rest are literally the same thing over and over again. Either a long spindly creature that chases you and is loud or an analog horror silhouette monster that constantly spams loud noises and also chases you.

From my work on the Great Silence mod pack I've realized that horror mods are almost all unbalanced or not fair gameplay wise. Balancing them has been really fun cause the play tests are always really fun. Horror needs to be designed with players that don't know the entity in mind. They need a chance to learn or be able to intuitively do the right thing be it running, Fighting, weaknesses, etc. then the entities need to be interesting or fun afterwards in a way that enhances the experience. My approach has been to embrace the survival aspects with both single and multiplayer.

Me and a friend of mine were playing a horror modpack together just to see and admittedly most of the dweller mods got old fast as they were just an insta kill or annoyance. There are good horror mods out there yes but admittedly the only time I really panicked was when the midnight lurker smashed through the windows of our base while screaming

One of the problems is that some mods just add entities to your world. if there's a whole custom map, etc. it gets scarier. but some mods won't fit with that.

The thing that made Minecraft scary was you’ll be mining and hear the strangest cave noise you ever heard and you’ll never hear it again until you forgot about it. The cave dweller and especially the one with the new model does it well. You’re supposed to have other mod packs with it like create, and rats. You’ll be focus on those mods instead of the horror one. mining, crafting and building. the moment you have you’re guard down. You hear but don’t see it. Scary af.

I wish there was a Minecraft mod that didn't focus on horror and in your face jump scares. Rather something that simply can be seen observing you and do strange griefs that don't destroy your builds but are meant to create a feeling of unease
