Chris Thompson sung one of the best songs of the 70´s: "Blinded by the light" a cover of Bruce Springsteen´s song. He was the voice of Manfred Mann´s Earth Band, and in the album Watch he wrote some songs and sung in all the tracks. He´s a hell of a singer, my friends.
Sidnei Marques Agreed, I saw him live on the War of the Worlds Tour in 2010 and I admit I didn't know much about him then. He seems to be mostly known to be a backup singer for the Freddie Mercury Tribute Show as well as others, but he's one HELL of a great Singer. The Songs he's recorded with Sarah Brightman get the Hairs standing on your Neck.
This is a terrific song, anthem ... it's powerful. I love all the different versions and it makes me appreciate the immense vocal power of John Farnham because his interpretation of this song can never be erased especially love that John's version uses bagpipes instead of lead guitar/violins etc. It's amazing that John Farnham's voice is so powerful he has to hold his microphone away from his mouth!
Played this with Chris back in the 80's He had the original drum pattern that Farnham used on his recording. At the end of the day it matters not who sang it better because he collected the royalties anyway. To top that off he was great to work with and we had a great deal of fun
What a fantastic professional performer - he punches the mike to the crowd, and they respond so well. Top ten all time videos for me, it makes the hair on my neck stand up! Thank you so much, Chris. And he wrote the song, oft covered.
well i was allways a annfred mans fan, but seeing this is much more tallented, chris made it in an over dimension, he made the crowd sing it, and this is over dimantional. Makes me happy, every time I listen to this, god bless your tallent.
Chris Thompson has always been "The Voice" to me..... He used to turned up at our Kingston-upon-Thames local to sing with the Sunday Lunchtime bands.... Weren't we lucky!!
I've seen a Pub version of Chris belting this out & from memory it was an 80s clip. Also loved another of his Band "Night" from 1979 & a track titled "Ain't that percuiar" brilliant vocalist.
Chris Thompson is a great singer. John Farnham is another level. That is no disrespect to Chris Thompson; incredible song, top singer. Farnham is practically untouchable in the last 40 years...check out JF's version of bridge over troubled water to see what I mean...he's the singer of singers! Good on ya John, and good on ya Chris for such a killer tune!! :)
That depends on how you define "better". I find Farnham's version to be thin on the vocals, muddy on the instrumentals, and generally lacking in feeling. Thompson sings it like he believes every word.
@FuTiPi I saw Chris sing this with alan Parsons on the 1995 tour and he nailed it with passion and precision. His intonation was just great. I think He sounds great here, never dodges the high notes. John Farnham has a stellar voice and may have done the definitive version in most people's minds, but I actually prefer Thompson. Check out the studio version on the APP 1995 live album bonus track.
You have to bear in mind that Chris is singing this80s song in 2016,aged 68) I wonder how good John Farnham would sing it today. (and yes I do like JF's version very much. )
are you kidding? Farnham has been performing this song constantly, up until yesterday, aged 70, and still belts it out. No disrespect to Chris, however it is not difficult to find videos of Farnham performing this.
@@JBrehaut11Agreed! Being a big Thompson's fan and tremendously enjoying his performance of the song, I must admit that John Farnham still is the best performer of 'You' re the Voice" nowadays. Incredibly strong!
Mate, songwriters write many songs and present them to record companies for $$s in the hope some artist can make them more coin through royalties if the song becomes a hit This song was released by Farnham in 1986 and became a hit and on the back of that Thompson included it on an album in 1995. Without Farnham's interpretation we wouldn't be talking about this now. I am an Aussie and dont mind Farnham but get sick of all the hype about him, but he made this song his own. And no doubt made Thompson and co writers a bit of coin as well. Give credit where credit is due.
@@eoinociarain7986 - I disagree, it was very popular amongst the rock fans of Manfred Mann. Just because it wasn't a popular 'hit' is irrelevant. He did write it after all.
He might have been born in the UK, but he was raised in New Zealand! I wish RUclips had his live performance of this song at the 1990 Commonwealth Games in Auckland, it was epic.
Chris Thompson actually wrote this song, not John Farnham. Good to see him singing his own song here when he was primarily know for singing cover songs.
@@119Agent Do you know Chris Thompson nearly rejected permission for John Farnham singing "You're the Voice". When he was young he lived in New Zealand. In 1967 John Farnham had a #1-hit with "Sadie the Cleaning Lady". Chris didn't want let someone sing his song who song about a cleaning lady. But Andy Qunta convinced him. When Chris listened to the John-Farnham-version it is said he was absolutely excited.
I compared the two as old guys singing live. I think Farnham has a "sweeter" voice and I prefer him on the down tempo. But, I prefer Thompson nailing the higher tempo "Power Cords". This is no doubt why Farnham is backup singer heavy here. Considering the chorus is the most important part of the song, I have to give the edge to Thompson. John Farnham "Youre The Voice" ft Jimmy Barnes & Mark Seymour AFL GF 2009
@FuTiPi He still sings better than you...he writes better songs than you...and he sings LIVE unlike the endless lip-synced Schlager crap shown on German TV in the evening from Friday through Sunday. And you have SCOOTER in your favorites....that says it all....:):):):)
Actually it has been said that Chris Thompson was reluctant at first to allow John Farnham to record You're the Voice because the only song Chris knew of John was Sadie, and like most people he thought John was a joke to the music industry. But John recorded it anyway, and sent a copy of his version to Chris who ended up being suitably impressed with it. And the rest ad they say is history!

love your song now and always will love this song over and over again and again
He still has that fabulous voice : )
Great version Chris Thompson has a Fantastic Voice.
Chris is 6 out of ten. Legendary John Farnham is 10 out of 10
I hope he comeback to perform with Alan Parson ...it was Amazing Duo and so harmonious
Such a powerful voice, and super showman with a responsive crowd - though he doesn't look like a rock star!

Chris Thompson sings with so much passion and conviction! Love it!
Well, sure, except for the minor detail of Chris Thompson writing the thing, and stinging it much better that Farnham...
He is the co writer of this song 🥰
He is, indeed.
John Farnham is better

John farnham original version wins it, but this is a credible attempt none the less

There is daylight between Farnham's version and this.

@FreeTheRocks three other people, actually. The song was written in 1985 by Chris Thompson, Andy Qunta, Keith Reid and Maggie Ryder.
