  • The Suffolk Horse breed is the feature of this episode. Joe visits their annual gathering in Ashtabula Fairgrounds in Ashtabula, Ohio. We see footage of of Suffolk teams pulling wagons and buggies interspersed with interviews with breeders.
Clifford Cox has been working with Suffolk Punch horses for 25 years. When he started there was only one breeder in the Southeastern United States. Now, because of promotion and exposure, there are many more. He feels the breed has been kept to its original purpose of work. He belongs to the Souther Suffolk Gathering Group which holds events.
Pete Mallett of Marshal, NC, explains all the reasons he likes Suffolk horses: strong, compact, great attitudes, not flighty, easy to keep, great feet, calm to new things and smart.
John Hammond, farrier and Suffolk breeder of Cornish, NH, is the Foot Class judge for this event. He
He h as been breeding since 1985. He describes what he likes to see when judging the foot class. We watch him judge a horse. He works with horses used for livery and farming in northern New England. He then talks about the farrier as a business person.
Lastly we talk to Dominic Button, a young man who works with Suffolk on his grandparents' farm and why he likes them and his plans for the future. He loves their temperament, ease of use, willingness to work and versatility.
