So many guides are either just "These are his moves" or "Here's a minute of combo footage without actually telling you what the buttons are or what I'm chaining together." Thanks for teaching.

If you want a cool combo starter with shang, back 1, 2 as young shang, then turn into old shang, air combo 1, 2, cancel into enhanced fire ball and continue the juggle from there
I’ve been labbing with Shang for the last day or two. Honestly one of the funnest players I’ve came across. Someone at NRS came through with some genius level themed stuff for him. The sorcerer and the dark magician come to life. Young and old on top of taking the form of your opponent and plus you get a try hard mix you can get switching from young to old mid combos or corner. Ending in the DB3 in old Shang is mad satisfying.
I’ve only played Shang once in kombat league, I was so hyped when I realized I was playing Shang and Goro! I brought my A game and won 3-1! He got me a few times as old Shang with a combo but other than that I felt the guy wasn’t trying too hard. It felt so cool to beat Shang with Reptile as the former slave vs his master. I’m looking forward to using Shang eventually. Thanks for the guide 🙏
Old Shang air fireball can be aimed a little. Hold back you get a close one and forward you get a far one instead of the "tracking" one. A more optimal combo is old f4121~df1, 4~df1, 4~df1, f4~df1, f4~db3 Also you can stay in young form and also always go into combos, just get used to always transform right away when starting the f4 string and continue the old one. Young 24, b22, 12 you can always end in fireballs and switch early to get the old one ground skulls for combos.
Dude thank you so much for these. MK1 is my first fighting game ever & it’s definitely a lot to learn. I’m maining Sub-Zero right now & it’d be awesome to get a guide for him. The only combo I can do is a super basic one that I came up with 😂
I think Shang Tsung is one of the funniest character in the game. He definitely has plenty of variety. In mk11 it was fun to use Ground eruption and Shake for zoning (Your main guide).
13:13 Shang zones, but he's not Cetrion; it isn't his primary game plan or win condition. He's still playing keep-away, but more in the sense of a "hit and run" character; think of how Kilgore in Killer Instinct operates, only leagues better by virtue of controlling which state he wants to be in for the given scenario.
As someone who first picked up reptile, and now mains Shang Tsung. I agree with a lot of his points and I can see where he is coming from I just disagree with what he said around 7:32. “Start the round as young, and the game old” I have found a lot of success with constantly changing forms in all cases of a fight. Getting comfortable with making form changes is key to mastering Shang.
If anyone is having trouble with the triple skull input with Shang tsung you can hold down and then do the left right to make it easier. You can also do quarter circle back and then front.

Heyy dink thanks for the vids was waiting on shang tsung until your guide. just a question tho can one play him without going absolutely crazy learning combos for every charecter in the roster?? he can still compete for sure! But I feel if you want to have the dirt other characters have you need to be able to switch between at will. That being said I am still having success not doing that since Im still figuring it all out
With air combos, you can do the juggle combo with young shang and transition to old shang and do an air combo into air fireball which you can get a full combo out of. But Shangs don't really do it because it's easier to just do the popular bnb with old shang.
@shujinkydink I'm not sure. Maybe it does more damage if you use a specific anti air Kameo like Jax or Scorpion, but it sounds like a lot of work for not really much. I think Shang's progression is gonna depend on how fast Shang players learn the roster and utilize Shang's opponent morphing, because if Baraka can get free 45% combos, imagine that with Shangs copying Baraka and getting the damage buff that goes with EX needle or EX morph.
Yo Dink! I like to share my thoughts on the character since I feel like this guide is far from complete. I would say you've covered ST's basics there at best. Lets start of with a good character definition. His young version is focused on space control and has superior combo starter. His old version has bigger combo/juggle properties which is obvious. However based on around 300 matches I did with him, I can say with confidence that his pressure and space control is much more effective when two versions are used simultaneously. From a distance switch is easy but up close morthps must be done mid F4 string. This allows safe shifting and effective offense based on whiff punishing and opening opponent with his F3 OH. Also, you did not mentioned that the "Bed of Spikes" is full punished on block. Only the enhanced version provides safety. Its not obligatory but learning the ability to shift before F4 string ends in his old version to younger version so end it with Enhanced "Bed of Spikes" provide safe ender. Of course that can be done with proper assist but in order to maximize his effectiveness this is crucial because it allows you to use the assist in different situations. It has to be mentioned that this part requires good execution to successful application. Proper shifting will require good understanding his projectiles properties and ability to observe opponents behaviour and act accordingly. Once you are comfortable with the above, at some point combos with Kameo (Sub) will allow you to apply damage while shifting mid combo into character you are playing up against. It will allow you to end combos in alternative way and (in some cases) with higher damage. Also a section with different Kameos would be convenient. You have mentioned Kung Lao as assist that gives mixup potential but there are other valid options that play in ST favour. It depends on the result we prefer.
