Unlocking the 3rd semester should fine within the challenges rule set and personally I would love to see how you and your chosen party fair in the late game.

I'm doing a challenge adjacent to this, I'm doing P5R with teammates set to full assault, and joker can only use support skills. It's been a ton of fun so far. Even on Hard, I never used the Wind Wall or Break skills, but I have to now.

Funny how the Wall and Break skills were used so much in 4, but literally never in 5. The only two times I can think where enemies use Wall skills is with the Apsaras/Hua Po squad in Madarame's Palace, where Apsaras will use Ice Wall to null the Hua Po's Ice weakness, and the Scathach + Cu Chulainn miniboss in Maruki's Palace, where Scathach will cover Cu Chulainn's weakness with Elec wall.

Ishtar is going to be an essential persona.
Challenges tend to fall apart once you hit Okumura. I did a no direct commands (and no dlc) run and it got rough.
I feel like Maruki's Confidant would fall under story required, because you need it to get the true ending of the game
Human player against Madarame: "This boss is a joke, it's literally just a test of matching elements and colors and spamming that skill"
AI against Madarame: "Haha Dekaja go brrr"
Maxing out Maruki should be fine, you made a point his skills won’t do much and you cant fuse or gain any other benefits anyway, though I will add that if you can beat vanilla but not third semester I see it as a win. Basically see third semester as an optional challenge
I doubt he will get past Okumura though without breaking some rules.
Third semester is the only way to get the
TRUE ending in Royal
There are two *True* endings in Royal
Vanilla story True End {Kill the False God}
Royal True end is only reached by Completely maxing out Level 5 bond with Kasumi, max out rank 10 with Maruki and Reach level 7 of Akechi's bond.
To unlock the TRUE ROUTE

Kasumi's bond is required to get the 3rd semester from what I know
It's cause her Confidant story won't be able to truly progress beyond rank 5 and you can't get the true ending
The Faith Arcana is in two HALVES
The first 5 ranks are the Max of part 1 to the fall of the false god
Her true awakening from what I know from Walkthroughs online is only unlocked by Maxing her to 5 first
Then you complete Maruki's confident to 10 to unlock Arc 3 also called the 3rd Semester
- Akechi rank 8 {Can't believe I remembered it as rank 7}
- Kasumi rank 5 {Faith Arcana then is LOCKED for the remainder of the Vanilla campaign}
- Maruki Maxed out rank 10
All three are required to get the 3rd semester or ARC 3
That's why their Confidants work the way they do
Akechi's was to have a Deeper meaning to his "Death" as to hint his part in the 3rd semester as well as his supposed survival
Kasumi is locked at rank 5 because that's not who she really is, her Confidant is like a Passing of the torch from her False reality to her TRUE True self 5 ranks as Kasumi 5 ranks as her True identity
Maruki has a deep impact to the 3rd semester and the Final Palace as well as our Bond with him is supposed make us feel for him before the reveal if what he actually was doing all along
I think Maruki counts as essential gameplay for Royal. Do it.

I don't know when Part 2 will be released, whether it be December or January. A good chunk of the gameplay is just me grinding and pressing the guard button for hours which is quite a burnout experience, but I refuse to give up continuing this. I say max out Maruki. The buffs he gives are inconsequential to the run and honestly will make it harder b/c days you spend bonding with him are days you could've spent grinding. Also, since you will almost certainly get to level 99 in the third semester, that one will be particularly difficult to beat doing nothing. :)

If you constantly guard then the only way you can get hit by ailments is if another enemy breaks your guard first which is highly unlikely so I say max Maruki.
Watching this after playing SMT V reminds me that there isn't too much of a graphical difference between the two games, not that that's a bad thing. It was great Persona 5 actually had SMT demons as enemies instead of random chairs and shadows haha. I can't wait to see the next part, I liked that you made the videos detailed, amazing work.

Hey, this run is impossible at Shido.
People are thinking Okumura might be hard or straight up impossible, but Shido will be literally impossible by the rules you set. The reason for that is the phase when he gets rid of all your teammates, and you have to fight him solo. You'll have to break your own rules to get past that.
I'd love to be proven wrong because this seems interesting, but otherwise, Shido is your run killer.
It would be kind of like the other Joker-only forced fights right? Like in the tutorial. Be kinda interested to see him fight Shido with his silly little Agathion XD
The ONE time Joker is willing to do anything, is to kick the bastard who sued him. Truly he's just making progression towards is recovery, Maruki's therapy is working !
The wiki says that True Artist's Grace targets all 4 party members, but the video shows that it can fail to land the paint effect, unlike the singular version that seems to be 100% accurate.

I definitely think you should unlock the third semester. Given this isn't a hyper rigid run - and instead makes some mostly minor and reasonable exceptions - I think it totally fits within the ruleset.
Imagine not doing a thing at home so you can play videogames and do nothing there as well, what a dream.
This is super late, but whenever the AI acts weird for an enemy you've seen before, it's helpful to analyze the persona. I use act freely for my party members a lot, and I've noticed sometimes the AI just doesn't recognize the personas! Clarifying the strengths, weaknesses, etc by using analyze has saved a lot of frustration in my experience

Something to note about Jose's name.
In the Japanese version, his name is ジョゼ
This is pronounced "jo-zey" so canonically the pronunciation of his name is indeed the way he says it, despite the Spanish pronunciation (where the name Jose is most common) being Hose.
I'd also like to think that Jose knows how to pronounce his own name, and that the actor was told how to pronounce it. in any situation if someone says "this is how my name is pronounced", even if it's not the traditional pronunciation, would we really argue with them?
I think the confusion comes from the localization’s notoriously bad pronunciation of certain words that aren’t in English (looking at you ryuji suck on my toe and diet building) and people just assuming that it’s said that way because whoever the voice director is THINKS jose is pronounced that way and we don’t have any reason to believe otherwise without actually looking into it ourselves
His name seems to use the portuguese pronunciation (with an english accent, I suppose)

Super cool video! I just started replaying royal now that its on pc for the first time since I played it on ps3 years ago, was very interesting to see exactly what the different difficulties do, since I've chosen hard
I think you should max out Maruki. Think of it like having to use the direct command for Riuji, it was a necessary cheat that was the only way to finish the run. In order to 'finish' the run (aka getting the true ending) you need to 'cheat' and max out Maruki

I heavily disagree with your point about P3's combat. While it is worse then P4 and P5's direct commands the tactics system in P3 works fine most of the time. You have to realize that not only is the AI worse in P5 because you're supposed to use direct commands but you are also only using Act Freely. The AI does not act like that at all in P3 if you simply plan your tactics accordingly

A lot of challenge runs sound like a tough but fun challenge. This one... sounds like an annoying slog. It does highlight the fact that OGP3 and FES are best left in the past. It would also appear that Morgana once trained under Mitsuru in the art of Always-use-status-effects Fu.
theres no way getting past the okumura boss if you make it that far, i hghly doubt the ai can handle the respawning minions phase of that battle on their own. even running just with my personal challenge of no dlc personas i had to step back and make specialized personas after failing a few times on my first blind playthrough

Personally i would say maxing out Maruki is mandatory , since otherwise you could not confirm if its possible to beat the final story boss by doing nothing.

I might be late on this, but I definitely think you should go for Maruki. In my opinion, going for the vanilla ending in a Royal challenge run is no different than making a deal with Yaldabaoth and saying you beat the game. Nah, go kick Maruki's ass.
I think the more important question is: Can you beat life by doing absolutely nothing? Im having pretty good run right now.

3rd Semester can only be unlocked by getting rank 5 with Kasumi, rank 7 with Akechi and Rank 10 with Maruki

How has nobody done a video on having allies attack of their own free will. That's right Persona 3 style!
But with Joker still able to act by the player's will.
Going back and rewatching this, I am wondering, why not have access to the challenge battles? Your team can take care of them for some additional items to help in palaces and Joker would be standing there guarding like usual.
I am doing my own "Act Freely" run on Hard and the AI is decent enough, once they learn the target's weakness, they go for it, but the problem is for some reason, they are allergic to using their buffs, but at least Ann has enough sense to use her Dekaja when enemies start buffing up, which was actually useful in Yusuke's awakening battle.
It is actually really fun, playing around the AI, especially when you figure out how they operate. I am planning on making Joker a buff/debuff Persona at some point so my allies can take down enemies or heal if need be. Just need to figure out the appropriate one to put the attack, defense and accuracy/evasion buffs/debuffs on.
Maxing out Maruki should happen because ultimately it's more content and fun for the audience.
Loved the vid, really gets the message of difficulty and challenge of the run across while still being entertaining.

you should absolutely raise maruki for the third semester(if you can even beat okumaru, without Luigi), his perks hardly even effect the run.
-mindfullness/wakefullness do not matter when Luigi Luigi only guards unless an enemy sp drains him which is only helping the enemies anyway
-agathion already reduces Luigi Luigi's chances of being afflicted with ailments so occasional ailment removal from detox and detox EX will rarely if ever occur in the first place
-flow doesn't matter when Luigi Luigi won't be attacking/casting spells

For a run like this, why didn't you allow choosing indirect commands? For me, knowing how to use the persona 3 indirect commands allowed me to do incredible things like beating the fuuka intro bosses without the need of fuuka's abilities. I always hear people struggling with it but honestly it's just a mechanic that I think people don't really understand how to use. Keeping them on "abuse weaknesses" tends to solve literally all these problems for me.
Of course it's still amazing what you had done with joker doing as little as possible.

For the record, Persona 3 was made around being unable to control your party members. It's not archaic as you put it.

I personally think acquiring new Personas and being able to swich between them should've been allowed (if asking for money and item were allowed), it would've been more interesting to see a run based on Personas you got from Joker doing nothing but guard :P
I would have said buying Revive items from Takemi should have been allowed so you party members can revive themselves, granted, that still won't save them from bad AI, but it may have reduced grinding time a little.
Max out Maruki, the third semester is going to be more difficult than anything else in the challenge, and the "buffs" don't do anything unless you're actually attacking with Joker.
I think if you talk to your teammates at the palace entrance you can add them into the party that way without bringing up the pause menu. Would that count as doing something?

While, yes it is "breaking" the rules, if you are able to make it to 3rd semester we can just infer that you would've made the end of vanilla without Maruki. Anyone over 10 should understand that I'm more interested in you overcoming the challenge otherwise like you said you shouldn't have started the game after the first prompt lol

Hmmm, nice challenge but holy cow is it sadistic. I enjoy it, kinda, but let's be real, it kind of boils down to grinding a ton and relying almost entirely on RNG, which if you ask me kind of defeats the purpose of a challenge run.
By the way, those saving issues can be easily avoided by just saving in different slots. That's kinda why you have them. There's not a rule that says "only use 1 save slot" is there?
Also, so AI Morgana is basically Mitsuru huh? Yaaay... I actually feel like the AI was (somewhat) less stupid in P3. My guess is that 99% of people don't bother with it so they didn't work it out as much. That and the combat system favoring it better such as being able to scan out enemy affinities there while here you mostly have to figure them out, leaving teammates to waste turns and SP trying stuff out (somewhere where aqcuiring Personas would help slightly, it gives you their full affinities for future non-boss encounters).
Oh, and if you continue, def do Maruki. But I'm not going to actively encourage continuing a run if you are finding it frustrating, tedious and unfun to do, I personally do not want a RUclipsr to go through that for the sake of viewers.

Gaining masks through Shadows begging is actually useful. If you fill out your roster, you can replace Agathion and get better resistances.

Well heres a thought when your list of personas get full it will ask you to replace one if I'm not mistaken doing so you could technically replace your equipped persona by doing nothing.
This run is basically Ren with the personality of an extremely sleepy Minato from persona 3.

Jeeze, that explains so much about merciless. I was not understanding what the fuck was up with the combat system since I went merciless for my first playthrough... Honestly, wish I chose hard because everything feels wonky now and it's just a battle of who gets one shot first and which random encounter am I going to have the wrong persona with the wrong weakness equipped and need to start over from my last save because of the most trivial fight.
I think you should do 3rd semester solely because this is Royal.
Just started watching this challenge because I've been playing P5R for the past weeks for hours every day myself (almost done!). And, I don't know if the challenge goes beyond the normal P5 ending, but if it does (which I'm gonna find out as I continue watching), I can imagine the last palace to get both, extremely annoying and entertaining. Since there's a certain someone getting hella pissed at Joker for everything he does or well, doesn't in that case, actually getting to play through that part of the game with no choice to just rush through everything, must be hilarious. 😂 Maybe I should start a challenge in new game+ too. Although I could very well see me get way too triggered by all those comments from Akechi about whatever I'm doing being completely wrong. Seriously, I'd probably make for a good source of entertainment to whoever's around while I'm playing, because I WILL definitely not let any of his comments uncommented. 😅

So I played on normal my entire playthrough (except Okumura who I exploited Merciless for), and I had no idea about the paint thing against Madarame. I wonder how many other bosses have option side actions available to you that I never saw!
SP = Sanity Points and by the end of Madarame's Palace it seems like Morgana and friends have drained their reserves XD
People talking about the 3rd semester like it's granted, but I'm curious to see how the team is going to fare against Okumura
This kinda run sounds just completely nerve wrecking...
you dont have to reload the save in kamoshidas palace 2nd infiltration in order to grind, you can just go to the room before the hallway to the enemies and that reloads the room
Hey I’ve been meaning to ask. When you got stuck at doing Heavenly Punisher for Kamoshida’s Palace, why not go after him when everyone except for maybe Morgana is out of SP? The party’s competence (roughly speaking) and raw damage output for that fight straight up skyrockets only when they’re stuck resorting to Physical actions and HP is totally negligible since they all die horribly to a charged Cleave even at max HP, so by all accounts depriving the party of their means to do anything but beat up the winged knight barehanded would bypass the AI’s need to dawdle on how handle the boss and bump up the average DPS to make the fight reliable (as no Agi, Zio, or support skills take up turns that now go to just basic attacking). Or did something I didn’t account for go wrong with that approach and it just never came up in the video script?
This was the very 1st palace and I was still learning how to play the game in this way. But yeah theoretically if we got rid of the SP on Ann and Ryuji, then they would use physical attacks only.
