Today we will take you again on a very special exploration, this exploration will lead us into the heart of one of the most historical countries on the Planet, France! France is renowned for its castles, there are approximately over 50.000 castles in the country and over the many centuries lot of them also got abandoned. The focus of this documentary will be one of the most historical abandoned castles out there. It has been built at the beginning of the 18th century for a noble French family. They had their roots deeply buried in the politics and trade of the local region. Over time the family tinned out until only one person was left this was Laurent Robert II. He had no interest in politics or trade but rather spent his time writing and making numerous books inside of the historic walls. Many of his once written novels are left behind, and we even managed to find some of his transcripts. Around 2 decades ago he passed away and there was nobody left that was willing to take over this place and breed new life into it. Today we will document the abandoned structure and breed new life into this dormant castle.

Apparently the family's money was gone long ago and Laurent was living a sparse existence. Evidently anything of value was sold long ago. Most magnificent abandoned castles in European countries are abandoned due to the family no longer being financially able to cover the costs of maintenance, tax's, and general upkeep. Very sad.
besides the maintenance costs, how are the taxes on properties like these?

In fact, many lost their nobility's exemptions. The nobles began to be taxed like any other citizen and, therefore, many were unable to maintain their properties.
I love that most of these castles are filled with huge numbers of books ,libraries containing the knowledge of the ages! Books and reading seems tobe a lost art these days! I have a library with over 5,000 books, and invariably visitors seem puzzled as to why I keep so many books. Some say, you could just look it up online…I say, there is nothing so wonderful and personal as opening a book and learning what lies inside its pages! There is much to be learned about the people from the books they owned! Leslie, you do such a fine job- the filming, narration, music! Thank you! And love your attire, very apropos!

So, I saw myself much younger descending the staircase wearing a beautiful gown. We wandered through the palace going nowhere and everywhere. Fireplaces were burning brightly. Candles were lit. It was all so charming and elegant! Thank you for the fantasy fuel!

The costume is pseudo-18th century, the house is 19th century.
@@mikaelb.2070 men still dressed this way in the early c19th too so it’s all good. He mentions the castle was built during the time Napoleon was ruling over France so this attire is spot on for that period.

It's just called a "Bed Warmer" here in America. They would pass it around in between the sheets, they wouldn't leave it in the bed or it would scorch the sheets. Love to watch your videos!

Yes, I was going to say the same. My mom was an antique dealer, and we had two of these bed warmers hanging on either side of the entry to the family room that was done up in Early American decor.

What I don't understand is why the last person living there didn't just sell the castle with all the items in there. Even if he didn't get a lot of money for the castle isn't a little money better than no money.

The first thing I notice - and appreciate - is that this place is not vandalized! For me, nothing is so unpleasant to see broken and especially tagged places. Fantastic chateau! My guess is that the smaller rooms with all the books were the servants’ quarters that was in one wing of the property and that Lawrence Robert used them for himself because they were smaller rooms to heat. Plus, larger rooms probably felt too spacious for someone living there alone. That chateau seemed far too vast for just the few rooms explored, imo. It would have taken all day to see the half of it. My guess is that the doorway under the staircase was not the main entrance. It’s not impactful enough for the wealthy owners, even though it’s lovely in its own right. There’s got to be a more formal entry area elsewhere. Truly a grand and magical place, though! I would give my right arm to own it and renovate it back to much of its former glory! Love the authentic costume to conduct the tour in, Lesley! Merci🤗

Being born in 1969, I've loved history and geography since very young age, this also includes castles!
Wonderful work, covering wonderful, unfortunately so, derelict castles, mansions etc., etc....
If money was object, I'd restore them or as many as possible, to their former glory, let them feel warmth of a fire, let the sound of laughter travel within....

You truly know how to "set a scene." Your outfit, takes us back to olden times and is a constant reminder, of the depth of history, throughout your tour. The line-up of the overhead drone view, the walk-up through the overgrowth, and the start, at the front door, is a well thought out plan for a superior touring experience. Your skills are superb. It's amazing seeing them so empty and in various stages of decay, and then thinking about how full and lively it once was in times past.

That copper "pan" with the long handle is actually called a "bed warmer". It would be filled with hot ashes from a fireplace and then run between the covers to warm a bed on a cold night.

I appreciate your honest reverence for the people and their belongings. It's so heartbreaking these magnificent places are left to rot. Think of the history seen...and the history being lost. I agree the government ought to maintain these structures.

I love your channel. In this castle, I noticed there are places with so little dust like someone cleaned it, and I don't know why, but I see there are no bugs and rats around like in other abandoned places . But I love watching your tour, though.

Wonderful documentary, Lesley. Very interesting castle. Imagine how many people lived and worked in this beautiful place during the 100+ years of it's existence. The amount of books is astounding. One you pulled out was from the 1960's. A lot of those books looked older still. Great tour as always. Thank you guy's for taking us on another adventure.

showman, as I think! Wow! - There was remarkably valuable antique furniture with many smaller items of value visible. It is such
a shame, that everything is just left behind to decay. - If this writer was very famous, the transscript of an unfinished book,
that you happened to find, might be an item of also some remarkable value.
I could easily feel with you, how incredibly sad it is to see these traces of increasing decay and mould on many parts
in the different rooms. Such a place should be by all means preserved!
It's practically unimagineable, how many items of great art historical value are just left to deteriorate for ever, instead of being
preserved.
I loved to watch you wandering through these abandoned rooms of that wonderful castle and filling it with some kind of new life
with your vivid imagination. - Nevertheless I think, that the castle might have been built in the 19th not 18th century, considering
the architectural features, which are imitating older styles like the gothic style. Of course I don't exclude, that there might be existing
also remarkably older parts in that building, which were not visible in the video. - However a wonderful explore video!

Love the costume and your take on what you see. I wished more people did this type of thing where they pay respect to the property and erra using costumes and information. Another youtuber would literally walk around reading wikileaks on places and it was so shameful how he did it.

When I think of a castle 🏰 this is definitely how I picture them, built with rocks/concrete. It is sad to see all these places decay, and not be saved. I loved to look at the amazing bedding and the beautiful colors of the castle.

OMG! Lesley this was so amazing. The beautiful intro, WOW! You and your team do a ,totally, amazing job on your explorations. Your wonderful stories and history on each episode make us all come back for more. What a great place for tourism. With all the Covid we have not been able to travel. We are able todo Europe with you as our tour guide. The long handled pans are called bed warmers. They servants would fill with coals and run it under the blankets and over the sheets to warm the beds. I loved the Banjo Grandfather clock. Priceless Antiques, so sad just left behind. That bizarre kitchen device just blew me away....... it is a pump, a very special pump! That's an air chamber on top which is used to build and hold air pressure as the pump handle is moved back and forth. Eventually both the water volume and the air pressure build to a suitable level and it's ready for some heavy duty pot and pan washing. And there's also that high pressure nozzle at the end of the flexible hose to assist the work....... Never have I seen such a device!
Beautiful yet dark wisteria blooms, so gothic yet enchanting. As an Antiques dealer, much of the household items were 1930-40's. and the furniture was rather plain for a castle.. he wasn't into opulence in decor for such a grand stately castle, that's for sure.. lol .. lovely video.. thank you. I love antique Persian, Turkish and Oriental rugs, I wish we could see more of them when explorers explore, antique rugs are worth a LOT of money, A antique Persian rug sold in 2010 for 9.6 million dollars, but they are often sadly ignored.
The bedrooms were small in order to hold heat efficiently (when people’s body temperatures naturally drop), and because people used the rooms for sleeping, only-one did not spend a lot of time in the bedroom with guests. So the small sizes were practical for the lifestyle of the 18th and 19th centuries.

No actually it’s from the time of giants who did not use kitchens or bathrooms. Which is why those things are non existent or relative afterthoughts shoved in some odd corner with external plumbing.

This was an amazing adventure and I enjoyed this very much. I believe the object you held in your hand at 10:42 (oblong ironstone dish with lid) was actually a Victorian toothbrush holder and would have been part of a matching washstand set which would include a soap dish, pitcher and wash basin. Here in the Southern United States we call that long-handled pan of bed warmer. Yes we could hot coals inside it, and then we ran it under the blankets in the top sheet of the bed just in contact with the mattress and the bottom sheet and it would warm the bed up so you didn't get a shock when you climbed under the covers.

I so hope not to offend you by suggesting that you do more reading about historical architecture, fittings, and furnishings, if you have time available. Knowing the names of objects and styles and purpose of things you encounter would add to your presentations.

Lesley is (correctly) always careful not to tell us where these properties are, that he explores. But maybe the answer is in the two heraldic shields over the main fireplace. I don't think that these are family related (why would there be two of them - and only the King of France had the right to use just 3 fleur-de-lys). I think that these are the 'arms' of Tours, in the Loire - 3 towers (tours) normally surmounted by 3 fleur-de-lys.
Hey Michael, That is correct. These heraldic shields don't lead you to the location of the castle. I carefully examined the entire video and nothing seems to lead towards the location of the castle.

Hi Michael. You are well informed. This coat of arms belongs to the family de Valois-Saint-Rémy, the descendants of the royal bastard Henri de Valois-Saint-Rémy (1557-1621, son of king Henri II), reason for their right to bear the 3 royal lys flowers. As far as I can assume, the both coats of arms on the fireplaces have'nt anything to do with this recent castle (built 1875).
@@philadelphe2710 A part of the Casle is older than XVIII. It looks like more renaissance with the mullioned windows (fenêtres à meneaux). What do you think ?
@@madamabutterfly7349 It even EXACTLY looks like Renaissance style, but it is only an imitation (brilliant imitation, but only an imitation : in France, we speak of "pastiche (de la Renaissance...)").
My inquieries about this mansion gave me the building year 1875.
Moreover, a mixture of 13th century style (gothic windows) and 16th century style (mullioned windows) on a same facade was unthinkable and impossible in the Renaissance age (which severely contempted the Middle Age) : such an artificial architectural mixture is only possible from the 19th century on (mostly 1870's).
