  • Hound Dog Taylor & the Houserockers featuring Little Walter on harmonica. This was back in 1967.
My account was deleted a while ago so I re-uploaded this one again. I thought it was kind a shame this one was deleted of youtube because we had some very nice discussions going, with even people like Billy Branch commenting!

Hound Dog, one of the most underrated musicians of his time.
He should have had more fame than he received.

      Thank you!
I was wondering who that was because he sounds FANTASTIC!
Both he and Mr. Taylor are playing cheap Japanese made instruments, as many Blues musicians of that era did. They sound great, and you sure can't buy them very cheaply anymore! I can hear Mr. Crume using flatwound strings. It's a great sound, and his playing is so fluid and lyrical. I too use old Japanese basses with flatwound strings to this day.

    • @RedGibsonsRock
      @RedGibsonsRock 8 лет назад +3

I agree about Mr. Crume's playing. Right in the pocket and sounding great!
My first electric bass was one just like his. My parents rented it from a local music store where I took lessons in '72. I stuck with the bass but not the lessons, so they bought the instrument for me. I traded it away long ago. Recently found one like it on ebay and bought it for old times' sake. Sounds good to my ears -- strung with flats, of course!
The black/white doesn't show it but those basses had a distinctive look with a tobaccoburst finish and a mirrored pickguard -- a real slice of the '60's.

One of the times I saw I saw Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers at Joe's Place in Cambridge, Mass his first set was probably the most powerful blues set I have ever seen. The second set was close. Unfortunately, by the third set the band was so drunk and stoned they had trouble tuning. I left. But Hound Dog was a very kindly man. I gave him a glass slide I made and he told me he did use it at home.
He died too soon. I blame our inaccessible health care system.

I think Little Walter was truly an incredible musician. Somehow, every single time I listen to him play.... I can't help but feel him. It's like he's standing in the room. My friend wrote an amazing script about Little Walter which I read... what a life... I think they might make it his movie this year. Last I heard they were sending it over to Will Smith and Ludacris!!!!! Yeah! His story NEEDS to be told!

I was obsessed with the harmonica when I was a little kid (don't know why), and the movie just sparked it up for me. And Columbus Short killed it as Little Walter, such a tragic troubled man. A very sad story that should be explored more.

In my early teens while learning to play the blues; Hounddog Taylor, Little Walter, Elmore James and Muddy Waters were my biggest influences but The DOG started the big blues ball rolling.
    One of my friends said,
"Hey I heard about this new label called Alligator and you've GOTTA HEAR this record I bought." The rest is history.
God rest you Mr. Taylor, I'm sorry I never got to thank you.

This is a very historic clip, as it shows Hound Dog rather early in his career, and Little Walter rather late in his. Later, Hound Dog Taylor claimed on his liner notes not to have used a bass player, but there was always a bass line there, I never understood that. Thanks for posting this.

    • @JohnnyFriendly

That's right. The 2nd guitar player used an early 50s tele which had 3 sounds -1) bridge pu, 2) neck pu and 3) neck pu with the treble rolled-off completely. The "bass" that you're hearing on those records is position 3)

Lots of sidemen gigged with whoever was on the bill that night; this tour put such legends together, whether or not they were a working band. The sound engineers on these Euro tours were way better than what most of these bluesmen got on their own records, Walter sounding clearly like his early influence, Sonnyboy II, and even a bit of Wolf stylings as well; he seems to have avoided the famous reverb-amped harp during live shows, like this, and it may have boiled down to technical limitations of the day. Still, he is the clear accompanist here, not the frontman, and he does his job pretty well. Modern blues players all seem desperate to be the guitar/harp hero, but short on feeling and putting the songs first.

HDT and Little Walter should of got together more often. They were even thinking of having Little Walter join HDT and the House Rockers but LW died right after a gig in Germany. LW tried to break up a fight that broke out in his audience. After returning to US LW collapsed from internal bleeding. and died. LW was a scrapper. Him and HDT made the Blues sound unreal. Too bad he died so young and before HDT and him could make some more of this incredible sounds together. One of my favorite music videos!! Awesome music these two produced!!

I don't think it woiks. Walter is walking all over Hound Dog and its not hard to see why this wasn't a permanent gig. I never would have thought. I think Walters sound is a little more "uptown", smooth and put together while Hound Dog is more of a raw, southern type FURIOUS sound, more chaotic. It's really cool seeing these guys on the stage together though. Great video. If you look really hard, for a split second you can see Hound Dog Taylors 6th finger on his left/fret hand. Kooky!

    • @johndelgado5315

I imagine you know about Little Walter... so, I'm prolly telling something you already know.
Little Walter was pre imminent harp player back in the day, a place in history he still affectionately holds to this day, with all due respect to great harp players who followed his path.
Little Walter played for Muddy Waters, he was up front and loud. Muddy encouraged this new up-front harmonica sound, and Muddy required it from LW. The first time a harp player was not a background sound. So... this was the sound for that era. Like it, or not... it was that way because Muddy said so.
Little Walter was a drinker, never backed down from a barroom fight, man'a fights in back bar alleys. And so, like HDT's 6'th finger, if you look close you see scars around his eye and forehead - from fights...!
Well, I can go on all day... this is a GREAT piece, and GREAT historical musicians.

TheGreatToucan I don't think that's accurate. He got recognition once he joined muddy. In fact the story goes that he was offered a nickel or a dime to play juke and decided why should he play for a band when he could make more solo ? At least that's what I remember. Not looking for a RUclips argument.
