What a treat to be able to watch a legend like Muddy Waters while I sit here at my computer. You can't get any better than this.
Agreed. The only thing better would have been to see him live.
Who else likes some muddy water in 2023,
2024..still rollin...long live Muddy
It is unbelivable how many GREAT harp players went through the Muddy Water's Band. It is a list of greats..from Little Walter,Paul Oscher,James Cotton, George Smith,Carey Bell, Jr Wells. I was lucky enough to see every one of them.Yes..an OLD blues fan.
Mojo Buford
I got to talk & hear little Walter 2 times, 1958 and the second time 1962 in Salinas California, and through my life I got to play with Willie bigeyes Smith Pinetop Perkins Jerry Portnoy Calvin Jones Charlie Musselwhite John Hammond Junior and a lot of other musicians, I was very lucky in that department I’m still playing with local bands, im 79 what great memories 😎, I got to sit in with Boz Scaggs Eric Burdon John Lee Hooker and many more, me and Willie bigeyes Smith used to go for rides up in the Rocky Mountains when he played around Fort Collins Colorado
Yes, and a side piece with Butterfield on "Father's and Sons".
A great session with Mike Bloomfield on guitar. Sometimes the guest players are better than the regular band.
Wow! All of them? Lucky you. I used to go to Boston and find the funkiest black, blues bars in the worst sections of the city. I'd go in by myself--only white in the bar-- only WOMAN, in the bar...and just groove on the music. No one ever bothered me...although I got some surprised looks. I was quite pretty back then too. But I was just there for the music. Everyone got the message and respected me. And I certainly respected them!
Sonny Boy Williamson too !
What an incredible groove Willie Big Eyes Smith lays down here!
Please add Calvin Jones. They were à magic pair .
Portnoy with some great raggedy sounds out of what looks like a green bullet. What an honor it must have been to share the stage with Muddy.
I recently met Jerry Portnoy at an event in Portland. To this day, he still gets choked up when he tells the story of the first time he played with Muddy. Funny Thing: During the event I attended, Jerry, Magic Dick (J. Geils Band), Lee Oskar (War), and Mark Hummel (Blues Survivors) all played together on a song, each one taking a turn. Jerry went last and taught a master class in both simplicity and the power of anticipation...by holding a single, high note for two full verses! It was amazing to see these other masters, owning every inch of their harps, only to have Jerry blow them all away (figuratively and literally) with one, long note. The man is...just...WOW!!!
Helluva story man. Bet that was a solid jam.

I had this Whole concert, now it has been poorly hacked up, and SO much is missing. Can you hook me up with a link? Thank you so much.
everyone speaks about this hero and that blues boy - but this guy made modern blues - he was dangerous, macho and classy - I love Muddy Waters
Not as macho classy as howlin wolf sorry to say.... the wolf could play guitar and did his own harp playing.
What a treat to be able to watch a legend like Muddy Waters while I sit here at my computer. Life doesn't get any better.
It's better when you see him live . Antones Austin Texas about the same time
2022...Shout out to the great harp player,...Jerry Portnoy,...he probably didn't get enough attention in his day,...as Muddy Waters, was the king of blues singing and performance. Thanks Jerry,.....harp players young and old appreciate your contributions.
Amazing Forever great blues with muddy Waters ❤❤❤❤❤
Ohhh, I love Muddy. He´s gone for awhile. But never dies. This old videos should go to some cloud museum, living for ever.
Muddy Waters a musical journey felt like I was sitting in the backseat going along for the ride muddy was on his game he knew how to drive a band. You couldn't do nothing but respect that man when he walked out on the stage. Willie big eyes my favorite Blues drummer of all time incredible. James Cotton open the show I'm thankful to have been there to see hear them I believe it was 1979 thank you so much for sharing this.
It’s over.., there will NEVER be another Muddy Waters!!! 😭
EL -- Elevating A Nation from the South to the North Going East and West. Here We Come Again...
I love Muddy! I was lucky enough to see him live 9 times in the 70s and 5 of those times Johnny Winter jammed with him. Does it get any better than that? I think NOT! Both Johnny and Bob Margolin are still kicking ass all over the place and you should see them play whnever you can.
What a Work by Jerry Portnoy on The Blues. On one of the greatest song ever. The masterness by Muddy is out of every... every... thing...!
Jerry Portnoy playin the harp ,man he's fantastic !
All modern music stemmed from the blues and here's one of the fathers of the blues and it became rock and roll and took over the world God bless him.🌍🌎🎹🎸🎷📻🎷🪗🎸🎛🎚🎙
My father loved the guitar so I naturally grew up loving the guitar. Today we have so many incredible blues guitarist that you just can't say that just one of them is the best. During the 50's, B.B. King was noticed because he did not use a slide to play the guitar. During that time, that's all you heard, slide guitar. He tried something new and the world of blues loved it. Thank you B.B. King and thank you to all musician's.
I came to hear Muddy and Jerry, but I'm absolutely BLOWN AWAY by the drummer. Has to be one of the coolest dudes of all time, and and I'm really diggin' how joyous he looks playing those drums!
As a longtime Muddy fan and blues harmonica nut, I would have loved to have seen this performance live!!
As I saw them guys many time, I can attest that le drummer, Willie" Big eyes" Smith & the bass player , Calvin" Fuzz" Jones, played together, a magic pair of aces. The Muddy waters style " Play with delay", as he said, sure they did, to the limit.
I think muddy was the best band leader in the blues, plus a great song writer.his phrasing with singing and guitar playing were second to none.muddy invented the electric guitar! So i think all that makes him one of the best blues guys of all time.
That is a great version of Blow Wind. I saw Muddy play with these guys often. They were so on and so relaxed and the best live blues band around. JB Hutto and the House Rockers were hot too, but did not play east coast as often as Muddy.
Wouldn't The World Be A Beautiful Place If Everyone Felt The Mood That This Song Makes .
this is so right...and true..all you need
Blues doesn't get better then this
That good ole dirty Blues
Phantastic musicians!
mouth organ and guitar...i love blues baby
the harmonica player ROCKS, holy shit.
Cannot say anything about Muddy - beyond words.
Well, when the sun rose this mornin'
I didn't have my baby by my side
Oh, when the sun rose this mornin'
I didn't have my baby by my side
Well [Incomprehensible] know where she was
Well, she's out with another guy
Well, don't the sun look lonesome?
Shadin' down behind the trees
Well, don't the sun looks so lonesome
Shadin' down behind the trees
Well, don't your house look so lonesome?
When your baby packed up to leave
Well, alright
Well, blow wind, blow wind
Blow my baby back to me
Oh, blow wind, blow wind
Blow my baby back to me
Well, you know if I don't soon find her
My heart's gonna be in misery
Well, alright, alright
Oh, goodbye, baby
I don't have no more to say
Oh, goodbye, baby
I don't have no more to say
Go ahead and have your way
Let's put Muddy's picture on the twenty dollarbill !
OhhhhYeah!
If anything, it should be the $100.
Right on

Add Calvin Jones to complete the list.
When I get to heaven, the first thing I'm gonna do is see where Muddy, Howlin Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughn, etc are playing.
Mind if I walk there with you?
What if they ain't there?
The man was an icon. ...

Muddy LOVED his harp players .
muddy water is...he is genious. he is just a genious. hes my favorite together with willie dixon and howlin wolf.
Far OUT! Really good stuff ;-0
This music, right here, is where bluesicians, and the like, get to sharpen their pencil, and do some good quality woodsheddin' ! This is the school of hard knocks. Rhythmical unity, the pocket, takes precedence. The dialects, of the blues, have to be earned. In most cases (not all) it is a life lived. Muddy was a pioneer who helped pave the way...and the Chess brothers had great ears. This is great American Music!!
super jerry portnoy!!!!!!
long live the blues

Karl_3
They were best of friends, but Pinetop made his name long before. He knew best move of his career was with Muddy. One mo gin..Muddy could spot talent like none other..n that's why it's " LEGENDARY" .....RIP. MUDDY.....N THANKS MUDDY FOR LETTING' MY LIL BROTHER SIT IN ON HARP WITH Y'ALL..IN 72...SANTA CRUZ CA.
