What a sweet, raw, beautiful mess. More players should learn that being genuine and soulful are the signatures of talent and entertainment. Technical proficiency be damned. Hound Dog was a master.
Very astute. That kind of thing is why The Ramones sound much better to me than Pure Prairie League, lol. Wish more ppl understood this nuance. I'd be able to turn on the radio without vomiting if they did.
I was there in Ann Arbor for this concert. He kicked everyones' ass big time. An awesome raw blues player who will never be topped in his style. Blew my mind big time, and made me an instant fan forever.
I've listened to thousands of bands over the decades, but if I could go back in time for one show, Hound Dog Taylor + the Houserockers at Florence's Lounge c. 1970 would very likely be it.
Just look at the joy on Hound Dog's face as he plays - and you know why Alligator Records was started around him. Another classic video - thanks for sharing it!
A few years ago, I bought a Hound Dog CD after watching these videos. I was enthralled with his playing. Best part: I pop the CD in and on the first track, he is being introduced at a live show, and I immediately hear a familiar voice. Sure enough, it was my cousin! He emcee'd that show all those years ago.
+John Roberts, good observation. Didn't see your comment 'til just now but I had also made a Teisco reference back a month after you did lol... I love this video.
Rory played his guitar once while jamming with HDT. The guitar was tuned to E minor, a neck bend like a saw. It was a Japanese Star guitar out of Woolworths, so said Rory in an 1980 interview.
I recall ...1973....my wife and I are rooting through a discount bin and I find a copy of Hound Dog Taylor....the self titled album....took it home and put it on the turntable....then proceeded to wear the damn thiong out playing it!
He got six fingers on both hands, but he cut off the right hand extra little finger with a razor 'cause it bothered him while playin'... Gritty blues & gritty man! Great video Thanks for post it!
Hound Dog Taylor is my favorite Bluesman, right up there with Howlin' Wolf. It would have been so cool to see him play live. Hope he and the Wolf are keeping those who went before us entertained someplace!!!
was 8 years old, we were poor, dad had died. My retired grandfather went back to work to help pay for Catholic school. Mom took her 5 babies on the bus to Maxwell St to buy school uniforms. The store was half a block north of a bus that sold blues records and tapes, and almost always had Hound Dog on the speakers. A little boy held in wonderous rapture, didnt even know till I heard Muddy try to cover it 15 years later, of his amazing skills!
Met Hound Dog,in Melbourne,Australia,I would have been 18, he noticed I had my harmonica with me in my pocket' unusual then for a chic to be playin' the harp. It was a one of gig, not even advertised in the Carlton Country Club in them days, he got me to follow him & his band to an old flat little stage and cried out, "make way with da Lady with da pram". I'll never forget,
I was at this particular gig of Hound Dog's.. My 2 1/2 yr old boy & I were on the same stage as the fellow who was zoomin' this. Man, I was such a purist. I could have sent my boy out over to Hound Dog and he would have gone. The place would've dug that but like I said I didn't want to spoil Hound Dog's authenticity...My goof I guess.
The guitar is a Kingston SD4. They were made by Kawai, only in 1964. It replaced his Kawai 160, his first four-pickup guitar. These guitars sound way different than a Teisco. He bought the Kingston to replace the Kawai. I have both models and it took me years to find them.
I'm aging myself now but does anyone remember Joe's Place in Cambridge, MA? He used to play there back in the early 70's before they burned down. I used to rock to the Houserockers back in high school before they checked ID's. he was AMAZING!!!
THIS IS BLUES!!! Hound Dog got more blues under his left little-toe than Clapt-Town will ever have. Genuine Houserockin' music. Of corse, Clap-Town outplay this guy whit whatevere he's got under his left little-toe. It don't matter. Hound Dog is blues, Clap-Town plays blues. As another englishman said a few hundreds years ago:" To be or not to be that is the question".
I used to see & hear & raise some sand with Hound Dog from about 1970-'75 at Chicago Clubs like The Expressway Lounge (south side) Big Dukes (west side) and Alices Revisited (north side).....He sure played his heart out at this Ann Arbor gig didn't he? Having Brewer & Ted along was just Icing on The Cake......
Those 15 with a thumbs down didn't pass the blues test. Why the f... did they bother at the first place??? If U don't get happy by seeing this U REALLY got the blues....
Thank you hound dog first album I got from the hound was hound dog Taylor and the house rockers A Great album so Raw and energetic if you get a chance don’t forget to listen to Elmore James and Muddy Waters has great examples of blues slide guitar
Is there anywhere in the world today where I can go listen to this quality of African American musician play this style of music? All input would be seriously appreciated!
Zer, you won't be disappointed! There's plenty of them out there but with the way stores are cutting back their blues sections, you'll probably be better of ordering/downloading from someone like Amazon. I really love all the albums.. Beware of the Dog and Natural Boogie are a couple that stand out in my memory. Enjoy!
Some time ago I bought my first guitar and I wanted this type of sound...the owner, whom taught music showed me how to take a modern amp & make it a dirty amp...and it sounds exactly like them old amps too & loving it
This the original "DOG". There's another video on YT with him performing live with COCO Taylor and LITTLE WALTER in Wing Dang Doodle. Its not to be missed.
The most famous Hound Dog Taylor quote was: "When I die, they'll say: 'He couldn't play shit, but he sure made it sound good.'"
That’s genius!
That sounds really good for sure
“I’m gonna do sumthin for you that the devil ain’t never done. I’m gonna leave you alone” ~ end of set
He just makes a body want to jump on a table and dance
@@Tangstr Darn good quote there, too.

Amen
idk what this stuff is about hound dog not being a good player he was an absolute master and from what i can tell his technique was flawless
I'm so glad that footage of H-dog survives. This guy so makes me wanna get the guitar out and give it another try.
Hopefully you have mastered the guitar at this point.
I was there in Ann Arbor for this concert. He kicked everyones' ass big time. An awesome raw blues player who will never be topped in his style. Blew my mind big time, and made me an instant fan forever.
Wow... thank you for sharing those awesome memories ✌
damn, what year?..I was born in Farmington in 1959..
@@michaelsteven1090 1969, if I'm not mistaken
This guy is an example of why I like the blues. Just pure simple rhythms, nuthin' fancy, not trying to impress anyone just having a fun time.
...simple rhythms played with impossible amounts of swagger and feel. It's all about the feel
First record I bought - age 12 - in a record store in Bern Switzerland. Heard it on the radio. Decided - must have.
You could find a record like that in Switzerland but not in New York City. That tells you something.
I may be alone - I may be among many - but this is the highest of the art forms.
I've listened to thousands of bands over the decades, but if I could go back in time for one show, Hound Dog Taylor + the Houserockers at Florence's Lounge c. 1970 would very likely be it.
Rare talent....The Hank Williams Sr. Of blues. Hank Jr. A clown but Hank iii rocks
Just look at the joy on Hound Dog's face as he plays - and you know why Alligator Records was started around him. Another classic video - thanks for sharing it!
Probably the best music video on the internet.
I agree 💯%
Magical guitar tone + Wonderful Smile = Greatness

wow what a story!
whoa..life is so short and full of travels we never ask for..
Brother, this here is where the soul of man never dies.
He said "if you got 'em, I got 'em', and I might give 'em to somebody else to, look out baby". Ain't that the blues? 00:45
Gotta love that classic Teisco Guitars sound!
+John Roberts, good observation. Didn't see your comment 'til just now but I had also made a Teisco reference back a month after you did lol... I love this video.
John Roberts you gotta buy guitars from the pawn shop or else they won't play the blooze .
John Roberts 1964 Kingston SD 4 , 4 pickup guitar . They are different from Teisco .
I love this music.......raw, energetic, and rich.......wish I knew musicians that played like this.
Oh yes, Hound Dog, one of the best unknown blues guitarists, Elmore James and Hound Dog, the absolute best. Groves to the max.
I worked all summer so I could be here for the whole weekend.
Hound Dog always tore the house down.
One of the most underrated/unknown of the blues greats
This guy is the reason I took up guitar.
I wanted to be crazy like him!
Rory played his guitar once while jamming with HDT. The guitar was tuned to E minor, a neck bend like a saw. It was a Japanese Star guitar out of Woolworths, so said Rory in an 1980 interview.

Damn! never saw this performance before. I have a radio show n' I did a special dedicated to this man. Bold sound, pure fire! 6 fingers Bluesman.
He loved it,he had it,we call it blues, remember him!
We're very lucky to have these film videos of this guy playing guitar. Really lucky
George Thoroughgood and the Delaware Destroyers brought me right here...thankyou!!
SRV eventually led me here.. and other places like Lightin Hopkins.. all the best music behind us.
My God! Long live The Hound. The blues gets no better than this!!!
that first lick really knocks you over the head. like Duane he plays a mean slide, but it's got a lot more grit - like BB in the 50s
He got six fingers on both hands,
but he cut off the right hand extra little finger with a razor 'cause it bothered him while playin'...
Gritty blues & gritty man!
Great video
Thanks for post it!
Pure love, via happy blues , via the Dog. Love him forever.
God Bless Hound Dog Taylor. Authentic as they come.
No one... but no one... did it like "The Hound"
Hound Dog Taylor is my favorite Bluesman, right up there with Howlin' Wolf. It would have been so cool to see him play live. Hope he and the Wolf are keeping those who went before us entertained someplace!!!

Grande Hound Dog Taylor grande Bluesman de Chicago grande mestria na guitarra a não esquecer. Obrigado.
I watch this every few months. "Look out baby!"
Hound Dog Taylor "Freddie's Blues". It's like your first grown-up kiss.
Hound Dog Taylor was a great entertainer. George Thorogood acknowledged him as his inspiration.
Robin Dale, I was at his concert at the old Festival Hall in Brisbane, The Best Concert I have been to, miss you Hound Dog.
So awesome, what talent and a nice man
Rawest slide guitar ever. l love the sound he has

The six fingered blues man! I love the Hound! Thanks
He is rather simple - but totally genuine!
My favorite track of his. This turned me into a Hound Dog fan!
This rude and powerful guitar sound blows my troubles away!!!
Thanks for posting!
Stevie

he was a friend back then when ever he came to Toronto I always got a call
one of the best blues performances ever

Greg Hale.
Was everything black and white back then?
Just most people's world view.
Awesome!! A GIANT in the Blues!

Jac Kass ...what you said..^^^
It's the internet. You can say "fuck". We won't tell.
So far ahead of his time. This music is L-O-U-D!
Your comment is so far ahead of its time.
Thank you hound dog first album I got from the hound was hound dog Taylor and the house rockers A Great album so Raw and energetic if you get a chance don’t forget to listen to Elmore James and Muddy Waters has great examples of blues slide guitar
I love so much this guy ❤️
Yea he always seems to cheer me up!
I want to sound just like hound dog. There just put it out to the universe
@hybridd The switch he messes with looks very like the reverb/trem footswitch that comes with a Fender Twin amp.
1972? If so I was there. Saw him at club in Ann Arbor, too, around then.
Ohhh, what a gooood and dammmnnn willlllld sound !
Yes! Hound Dog! Ain't nothin' better, not nowhere, not nohow!
Now this is true raw blues, as it should be.
I loved that so much, thanks man.
This and Big Joe Williams kind of changed my perception of the blues'/.
The BEST Blues band of all times !
Best thing about this guitar playing is that its completely true to the guy playing it.
Is there anywhere in the world today where I can go listen to this quality of African American musician play this style of music? All input would be seriously appreciated!

すごい音✨
天国でエルモアもぶっ飛んでるはず😆✨

This guy's like a kid in a candy store
. Personality plus
Some time ago I bought my first guitar and I wanted this type of sound...the owner, whom taught music showed me how to take a modern amp & make it a dirty amp...and it sounds exactly like them old amps too & loving it
How?
Max all the amp settings, turn the amp up, set control on the guitar to bridge pickup, open tune to d or g, and let'er rip!
mr. hound dog taylor is unique ... DOG is GOD
sheer brillance!
Raw blues at the top👍👍👍👍
Voz rockanrolera como pocas, un slide salvaje y una personalidad muy especial! No por nada el título de su álbum Bewere with The Dog!!
This is as blues as it gets. RAW not polished. How it's meant to be.
STPlsd8974 Totally agree
He da man, could really charm the ladies, and pick it mean country style electric blues!!!
Hound Dog is one Rockin' Bluesman!!!!!!
Slidemaster at his best!!
R.I.P.
