God, the only time Will was truly happy and excited in season 4 was when he was waiting for Mike at the airport and came up to hug him. The rest of the season he was sad and cried a lot. My sunshine 😭
Will is the most shafted character fr. He’s been through more than probably everyone in the series except El at this point. Like he was trapped in the upside down and is still haunted by it and yet his character gets like zero screen time and his only role in this season was about his relationship with Mike and El? He has a special relationship with the upside down. Why is his character not used more? Also everyone is so mean to him and doesn’t treat him with enough compassion compare to the traumatic shit he’s gone through. He’s the best person out of the all despite his adversity

The funniest thing to me was that Mike's monologue seemed kind of off, but then after Finn said the Duffers told him to improvise part of that monologue, I was like, excuse me?! This is supposed to be the climax scene and his redemption to El, but Finn just improvised it??? I was shocked as a fan and as a writer. I tried to think may be as Finn is Mike, they wanted to give him the chance to talk from his own Mike's POV , but this scene is too important to not be fully involved as a script writer, so how is that possible??? and Finn also was so happy he came out with the "You're my super hero" line, he was so proud of himself for that lmao.

I want to say something from my opinion if you disagree that's totally fine. :) "Soon you'll meet my friends" -El "Frie- friends? What friends?" -Will "You know, Stacy and Angela" -El "Angela!?" -Will At this point Will is obviously worried because he knows El gets bullied by Angela and doesn't want her getting hurt. But Mike looks at Will in a very sad way in this scene, because he read a letter saying that Will likes a girl and is making art for them, and is thinking that Angela is the one he likes, meaning he gets jealous. More evidence to this is that even though Mike knows about the painting as El clarified the details in her letter, he still has to ask what it is, then plays it off. Plus, in one of the argument scenes the music playing is called in the closet, remind you of anything? This happens at this bit. "I-I don't know, maybe you should've reached out more? I'm not sure, but why is this all on me? Why am I the bad guy?" The instrumental as soon as Mike says this, indicating he is "in the closet" In the scene of El's bedroom, we see a box full of pictures and things while frowning and looking miserable, and we all know that Mike is awkward in pictures and hates to be recorded, even though he let's Will record him on halloween with no complaints. In season 3, when Will destroys Castle Byers, he rips the picture of him and his friends, including Mike who happens to be... smiling?

I love how Eleven is like “you don’t know what it’s like.” When Mike says “I have been bullied my entire life” I think she forgot that she had to save him from jumping off a cliff.
I agree, but I think she meant that he cannot understand or know what it’s like, not because of the bullying, but the rest of her traumas, and how she would always feel like a monster because of them she didn’t grew up having a home or parents etc
@@laixou Plus season 4 was the season of when we find out she sent 001 to the Upside Down. After she hit Angela with the skate and Mike said " what did you do, El what did you do? " she immediately flashbacked to Brenner saying " What have you done " which was in the second episode. But we originally saw more of it in the opening scene of the first episode when a whole bunch of kids were killed in the rainbow room with a very young El standing with blood all over herself as Brenner yells " what have you done ". I think it was more on that. Thinking she killed all those kids and parts of that memory were just starting to resurface.
And nobody notices that THE ONLY TIME when mike says he loves el was when she was in death danger. Like already halfway dead. And if she wasnt in death danger maybe he wouldnt even say it by his own free will.
But it wasn't even of his own free will 💀 Like before he does say "I love you" we can see Will pressuring into saying something like that. I'm pretty sure if not for Will pressuring him he wouldn't have said it.

this is such a great analysis, the editing was so good and hilarious...totally missed the stancy parallel but that is such an insane observation...wow i love mike. it's like most people don't care about him, the love that he deserves and needs, people just dehumanize him, it's unfair. for mike, the only person who has always accepted him for who he truly is, is will. time and again we see how unashamed and uninhibited mike feels when he is alone and with will. they don't have any rules to live by, their relationship is theirs alone. they don't have to refer to books, movies, soap operas or society to figure out what can make the other happy, they know each other, they know what makes the other person happy and contended. their only reference is memory, memory of each other's past and present. they don't need to kiss and smooch to fulfil the needs of a true relationship. theirs isn't platonic or romantic love, it's a love composed of every form of care and loving that can ever be, brotherly or friendly or romantic or anything, it is just LOVE, unlabelled, unhindered, untouched by the outside world. it has the potential to grow into something more, yet in its current form, it is still so intimate and personal, like nothing they have with anyone else. everytime one makes mistakes or upsets the other (which is mostly mike), the understanding and the growth that follows (just like in s4) is just so natural and shows how DEEPLY THEY THINK ABOUT EACH OTHER. like the maturity in their conversations since s1 is just mindblowing. at best mike and el's relationship is an example of how damaging heteronormativity is, pretty realistic anygays thanku for making this vid. subscribed, liked and looking forward to more from your channel...

When he said “we’re friends” he took wills question as “but me? I like you” but will meant it as “well yeah but we’re best friends” and will took mikes “we’re friends” as “we’re just friends” he thought he was minimizing their friendship and Mike wanted will to believe he just liked him as a friend
And when will said “you called maybe a couple times” he didn’t know how much Mike was trying to call him. He thought he was ignoring him and Mike knew Joyce was on the phone and wanted will to do something about it and try to call him too
Mike was in the wrong for not being on els side but el doesn’t know he also feels like an outcast everywhere and like a monster (this is in the middle of the aids pandemic)
And if he did love eleven he would first of all be on her side and if he was jealous of will (platonic) because he thought he forgot him he’d still comfort eleven and not yell at her like he has done since season one. And then when he realized what was going on more (in the apology scene) he would try to comfort her as much as possible and tell her he loves her. He knew that’s what she wanted to hear because she literally says “but you don’t love me anymore?”
i wasn’t a byler shipper at first. but i definitely wasn’t a mileven shipper either… somehow, mike and el’s relationship always felt a bit off to me. as if the writers were trying to make us believe in something that wasn’t even truly there… i didn’t ship byler, but i watched season 4, and i have eyes. it’s obvious that will loves mike. mike, on the other hand, is still lost and confused at a time when homosexuality was a difficult thing to even know about or severely criticised. let’s not forget that mike struggles with showing emotions in general (we also can observe the same behaviour with his sister nancy), probably because of the way he was raised. mike believes that once a relationship is stated, that it will stay that way forever. therefore, he doesn’t do anything (or at least not enough) to maintain the relationship going (with both el AND will). just like his parents’ relationship work… mike hasn’t learned that relationships are both owed and a reward for the people who get their ass up and actually do things to preserve them. and in season 4, will is the one showing mike how it works, how relationships work : he offers him a gift he MADE BY HIMSELF especially for him, he reassures him, he listens to him, he gives him advice… i mean will literally teaches mike how to speak to his girlfriend at the end of the show, so… all in all, season 4 shows us that mike and will need each other more than el needs mike. i think we can all agree that will’s gonna play an important role on whatever mike’s gonna evolve to in the next season
Honestly, mileven is supposed to feel odd to reflect Mike's family and all. The fact he's parents never loved each other, and he's mom LITERALLY tried cheating on her husband and then regretted after. But they kept the relationship because of they're children, probably because they think that if they broke up it would be a messed up family. But since they never loved each other, it was more difficult representing a romantic relationship to they're children. So maybe that's why Mike just goes straight on dating El

Perhaps Mike was initially in love with El, but as time went by, he lost those feelings and started to imagine that El was Will whenever they had romantic moments.
At 22:52, he hardly knew her, so it's obvious that his feelings hadn't started to develop yet. He may have had feelings for Will before he went missing but just thought it was normal. This seems like a reasonable explanation since he was just a kid. It's difficult to know what's a crush and what's not. Maybe he fell in love with El because he saw her as Will but with powers, or because of her looks. I mean, how can you fall in love with someone who only says one word? Perhaps he just found her cool and pretty, and that's how he thought being in love was like for him. He might have felt the same way towards Will, but he wasn't sure if it was love or not since back then, LGBTQ+ wasn't accepted as it is now. So, he might have just thought that this is how friends feel when you have those feelings towards a guy, but if it's a girl, then it must be love. Does that make sense? I also think that if it's true, perhaps he began to see El as Will over time.

i feel like mike fell more inlove with idea of el rather than el herself. she was almost a savior to him, she had brought back will who he cared so deeply about. he knew that it was the stereotypical thing to get a gf, it was smth he's 'supposed to' do. he cared for el and just assumed that 'oh she's a girl i care abt? i should be in a relationship w her'. he wasnt able to differentiate his platonic and romantic feelings. during s1 & 2 they were still young and the relationship wasnt as serious, so he hadnt realized this. during s3, u can see how mike starts to almost put on act for him and el's relationship. he's just going through the motions w her and doing stereotypical relationship things because he 'has to.' once they move away, mike is given time to think about his feelings and realize that maybe he doesnt like el in that way, maybe it's will he feels more deeply for. during s4 u can see how he rlly doesnt love el and the act is starting to slip, as well as his internalized homophobia and tension w will. hopefully in s5 he will finally come to terms w his true feelings!! that was so long btw wow.

Hey I’m late but I also wanna point something else. In the second season, there are a lot of Byler scenes and in fact you can see how much Mike cares about Will. So everybody is asking why since the third season Mike started treating Will bad, and I think that the reason it’s because the dance, in the end of second two, made Mike develop internalised homophobia. Of course we all know that he has it, but it developed just there because he started seeing everybody coupling with someone, even Will,so he thought he had to do it too and started following society by dancing with El. I know this might sound obvious and banal but it really tells you the reason why Mike it’s been like that since season three.

Idk if you'll see this but I love that because you realte to Will the van scene made you sad. Not that I love seeing you sad- just that it's interesting because I relate to Mike a lot and love him with all my heart. When I watch that scene all I can feel is such a suffocating bittersweet affection and just awe. The way the light shines through on Noah. Finn's face as his eyes dart down legit makes my stomach swoop. Not in a romantic way for the actor/character, but moreso just the raw feelings created from the acting skills and music. Tender Emotional Music strikes again. Whenever I watch the scene all I can feel is this deep longing and yearning and such a wanting understanding and acceptance. It's why I really think Mike is in love with Will. I'm not a gay man in the 80s (I'm a lesbian in the year of our lord and savior 2023, the great Stranger Things drought), so why is his actor envoking the feelings inside me of one??? Yeah I started noticing all things Mike after a couple of re watching the first 3 seasons before season 4 came out. And I don't mean just what he says or does but also the specific props in his scenes and also song lyrics and background music that play in Mike scenes. Plus now even the clothes. Also in season 3 when blue meets yellow in the west. It was obviously referring to Mike and Will. Mikes color is blue and Wills yellow. Mike was meeting Will in the west.
The analysis is great! Although I always viewed Mike as bisexual. Maybe it's because I'm bisexual and the idea of a bisexual character makes me happy or because I subconsciously tend to view characters that I like as bi but in my opinion it makes a lot of sense. He constantly checks up on both Will and Eleven (he does not do that with others in a similar manner) and seems to care about both of them a lot.

Also everyone is so mean to him and doesn’t treat him with enough compassion compare to the traumatic shit he’s gone through. He’s the best person out of the all despite his adversity

The funniest thing to me was that Mike's monologue seemed kind of off, but then after Finn said the Duffers told him to improvise part of that monologue, I was like, excuse me?! This is supposed to be the climax scene and his redemption to El, but Finn just improvised it??? I was shocked as a fan and as a writer. I tried to think may be as Finn is Mike, they wanted to give him the chance to talk from his own Mike's POV , but this scene is too important to not be fully involved as a script writer, so how is that possible??? and Finn also was so happy he came out with the "You're my super hero" line, he was so proud of himself for that lmao.

At this point Will is obviously worried because he knows El gets bullied by Angela and doesn't want her getting hurt. But Mike looks at Will in a very sad way in this scene, because he read a letter saying that Will likes a girl and is making art for them, and is thinking that Angela is the one he likes, meaning he gets jealous. More evidence to this is that even though Mike knows about the painting as El clarified the details in her letter, he still has to ask what it is, then plays it off. Plus, in one of the argument scenes the music playing is called in the closet, remind you of anything? This happens at this bit.
"I-I don't know, maybe you should've reached out more? I'm not sure, but why is this all on me? Why am I the bad guy?" The instrumental as soon as Mike says this, indicating he is "in the closet"
In the scene of El's bedroom, we see a box full of pictures and things while frowning and looking miserable, and we all know that Mike is awkward in pictures and hates to be recorded, even though he let's Will record him on halloween with no complaints. In season 3, when Will destroys Castle Byers, he rips the picture of him and his friends, including Mike who happens to be... smiling?

@@laixou Plus season 4 was the season of when we find out she sent 001 to the Upside Down. After she hit Angela with the skate and Mike said " what did you do, El what did you do? " she immediately flashbacked to Brenner saying " What have you done " which was in the second episode. But we originally saw more of it in the opening scene of the first episode when a whole bunch of kids were killed in the rainbow room with a very young El standing with blood all over herself as Brenner yells " what have you done ". I think it was more on that. Thinking she killed all those kids and parts of that memory were just starting to resurface.
And nobody notices that THE ONLY TIME when mike says he loves el was when she was in death danger. Like already halfway dead. And if she wasnt in death danger maybe he wouldnt even say it by his own free will.

i love mike. it's like most people don't care about him, the love that he deserves and needs, people just dehumanize him, it's unfair.
for mike, the only person who has always accepted him for who he truly is, is will. time and again we see how unashamed and uninhibited mike feels when he is alone and with will. they don't have any rules to live by, their relationship is theirs alone. they don't have to refer to books, movies, soap operas or society to figure out what can make the other happy, they know each other, they know what makes the other person happy and contended. their only reference is memory, memory of each other's past and present. they don't need to kiss and smooch to fulfil the needs of a true relationship. theirs isn't platonic or romantic love, it's a love composed of every form of care and loving that can ever be, brotherly or friendly or romantic or anything, it is just LOVE, unlabelled, unhindered, untouched by the outside world. it has the potential to grow into something more, yet in its current form, it is still so intimate and personal, like nothing they have with anyone else. everytime one makes mistakes or upsets the other (which is mostly mike), the understanding and the growth that follows (just like in s4) is just so natural and shows how DEEPLY THEY THINK ABOUT EACH OTHER. like the maturity in their conversations since s1 is just mindblowing.

When he said “we’re friends” he took wills question as “but me? I like you” but will meant it as “well yeah but we’re best friends” and will took mikes “we’re friends” as “we’re just friends” he thought he was minimizing their friendship and Mike wanted will to believe he just liked him as a friend
And when will said “you called maybe a couple times” he didn’t know how much Mike was trying to call him. He thought he was ignoring him and Mike knew Joyce was on the phone and wanted will to do something about it and try to call him too
Mike was in the wrong for not being on els side but el doesn’t know he also feels like an outcast everywhere and like a monster (this is in the middle of the aids pandemic)
And if he did love eleven he would first of all be on her side and if he was jealous of will (platonic) because he thought he forgot him he’d still comfort eleven and not yell at her like he has done since season one. And then when he realized what was going on more (in the apology scene) he would try to comfort her as much as possible and tell her he loves her. He knew that’s what she wanted to hear because she literally says “but you don’t love me anymore?”

i wasn’t a byler shipper at first. but i definitely wasn’t a mileven shipper either… somehow, mike and el’s relationship always felt a bit off to me. as if the writers were trying to make us believe in something that wasn’t even truly there…
i didn’t ship byler, but i watched season 4, and i have eyes. it’s obvious that will loves mike. mike, on the other hand, is still lost and confused at a time when homosexuality was a difficult thing to even know about or severely criticised.
let’s not forget that mike struggles with showing emotions in general (we also can observe the same behaviour with his sister nancy), probably because of the way he was raised. mike believes that once a relationship is stated, that it will stay that way forever. therefore, he doesn’t do anything (or at least not enough) to maintain the relationship going (with both el AND will). just like his parents’ relationship work… mike hasn’t learned that relationships are both owed and a reward for the people who get their ass up and actually do things to preserve them. and in season 4, will is the one showing mike how it works, how relationships work : he offers him a gift he MADE BY HIMSELF especially for him, he reassures him, he listens to him, he gives him advice… i mean will literally teaches mike how to speak to his girlfriend at the end of the show, so…
all in all, season 4 shows us that mike and will need each other more than el needs mike. i think we can all agree that will’s gonna play an important role on whatever mike’s gonna evolve to in the next season
Honestly, mileven is supposed to feel odd to reflect Mike's family and all. The fact he's parents never loved each other, and he's mom LITERALLY tried cheating on her husband and then regretted after. But they kept the relationship because of they're children, probably because they think that if they broke up it would be a messed up family. But since they never loved each other, it was more difficult representing a romantic relationship to they're children. So maybe that's why Mike just goes straight on dating El

Perhaps Mike was initially in love with El, but as time went by, he lost those feelings and started to imagine that El was Will whenever they had romantic moments.
At 22:52, he hardly knew her, so it's obvious that his feelings hadn't started to develop yet. He may have had feelings for Will before he went missing but just thought it was normal. This seems like a reasonable explanation since he was just a kid. It's difficult to know what's a crush and what's not. Maybe he fell in love with El because he saw her as Will but with powers, or because of her looks. I mean, how can you fall in love with someone who only says one word? Perhaps he just found her cool and pretty, and that's how he thought being in love was like for him.
He might have felt the same way towards Will, but he wasn't sure if it was love or not since back then, LGBTQ+ wasn't accepted as it is now. So, he might have just thought that this is how friends feel when you have those feelings towards a guy, but if it's a girl, then it must be love. Does that make sense? I also think that if it's true, perhaps he began to see El as Will over time.

i feel like mike fell more inlove with idea of el rather than el herself. she was almost a savior to him, she had brought back will who he cared so deeply about. he knew that it was the stereotypical thing to get a gf, it was smth he's 'supposed to' do. he cared for el and just assumed that 'oh she's a girl i care abt? i should be in a relationship w her'. he wasnt able to differentiate his platonic and romantic feelings. during s1 & 2 they were still young and the relationship wasnt as serious, so he hadnt realized this. during s3, u can see how mike starts to almost put on act for him and el's relationship. he's just going through the motions w her and doing stereotypical relationship things because he 'has to.' once they move away, mike is given time to think about his feelings and realize that maybe he doesnt like el in that way, maybe it's will he feels more deeply for. during s4 u can see how he rlly doesnt love el and the act is starting to slip, as well as his internalized homophobia and tension w will. hopefully in s5 he will finally come to terms w his true feelings!! that was so long btw wow.

Hey I’m late but I also wanna point something else. In the second season, there are a lot of Byler scenes and in fact you can see how much Mike cares about Will. So everybody is asking why since the third season Mike started treating Will bad, and I think that the reason it’s because the dance, in the end of second two, made Mike develop internalised homophobia. Of course we all know that he has it, but it developed just there because he started seeing everybody coupling with someone, even Will,so he thought he had to do it too and started following society by dancing with El. I know this might sound obvious and banal but it really tells you the reason why Mike it’s been like that since season three.
In fact Mike wasn’t even interested in El in season one, he was just focused on finding Will

Idk if you'll see this but I love that because you realte to Will the van scene made you sad. Not that I love seeing you sad- just that it's interesting because I relate to Mike a lot and love him with all my heart. When I watch that scene all I can feel is such a suffocating bittersweet affection and just awe. The way the light shines through on Noah. Finn's face as his eyes dart down legit makes my stomach swoop. Not in a romantic way for the actor/character, but moreso just the raw feelings created from the acting skills and music. Tender Emotional Music strikes again. Whenever I watch the scene all I can feel is this deep longing and yearning and such a wanting understanding and acceptance. It's why I really think Mike is in love with Will. I'm not a gay man in the 80s (I'm a lesbian in the year of our lord and savior 2023, the great Stranger Things drought), so why is his actor envoking the feelings inside me of one??? The scene is not giving me feelings of a straight main confiding in his secretly gay friend.

Yeah I started noticing all things Mike after a couple of re watching the first 3 seasons before season 4 came out. And I don't mean just what he says or does but also the specific props in his scenes and also song lyrics and background music that play in Mike scenes. Plus now even the clothes. Also in season 3 when blue meets yellow in the west. It was obviously referring to Mike and Will. Mikes color is blue and Wills yellow. Mike was meeting Will in the west.

Although I always viewed Mike as bisexual. Maybe it's because I'm bisexual and the idea of a bisexual character makes me happy or because I subconsciously tend to view characters that I like as bi but in my opinion it makes a lot of sense. He constantly checks up on both Will and Eleven (he does not do that with others in a similar manner) and seems to care about both of them a lot.
