I got rid of prime they were charging me after I cancelled whole ordeal, but luckily I have seen all these movies and own 15 of them. DVDs are cheaper than any streaming service thanks to Rasputin records last music store around 10 for $10 on movies 10 years old or more. I just got the grey (L.N.) $4 not streaming anywhere

Ok there are three Korean movies I'm a bit surprised you didn't mention: Old Boy, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, and Lady Vengeance. The Handmaiden is in there, too, right now. Your list is top flight, I won't argue that. I would have added (because I'm an older guy) Little Big Man and Mullholland Falls. Being the Ricardos, yeah it's an Amazon Original I get it, but it's very good, and got an Academy nom.

I have a Criterion copy of Blow Out, and agree that it is a gem. His films always end up in a place that is hard to predict when they start - such as Dressed to Kill (on HBO MAX right now). Thanks for all you do, Darren, by rekindling our love of classics (like this list), and updating us with newer films that are streaming.

Blow Out is such a good movie! I was just a kid when it came out, saw it in the theater with my mom. She was a big fan of mystery and suspense, both books and films, so I was very well acquainted with Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock, Sherlock Holmes and the like from a very young age. I absolutely loved Blow Out! To me it was like a classic Hitchcock movie with some modern 80's technology. I watched it again a few years ago and it has indeed held up really well!! 👍

Blow Out was kind of a reworking of Blow Up, a British film of the mid 60's. It was totally mind blowing, based on a similar concept. FYI, it's a better flick, and it's also available on Prime.

  • @WyteRabit

I LOVE Blow Out. It's easily, one of my favorite Travola movies. You forgot to mention that John Lithgow has a great role. I love Lithgow because you can watch one of his movies and suddenly realize.. "hey.. that's John Lithgow!" The diversity of his roles always amazes me. From Footloose, Harry and the Hendersons, Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai, 2010, Twilight Zone, and the World According to Garp, he always plays such interesting characters that are often so different from the others.

Great list of films Darren. I have noticed the sparse pickings for movies available on Amazon Prime lately. These are all good picks.
I will say it: 'Young Frankenstein' is Mel Brooks' best film. Co-written by Gene Wilder... so that helps. Brilliant film. Always makes me laugh. I'll watch it wherever, whenever and from any point in the film to the end. Hilarious.
I put 'Unforgiven' above 'The Good, The Bad and The Ugly' for all-time best western film.
'Blow Out' is a great thriller film from DePalma. Filmed in Philadelphia.
I have to check out '13 Assassins'. I love Miike's other films, so this one will get a viewing soon. Thanks.

As always, I love and appreciate the list... Great stuff man.
I also want to say, in reference to your comment about Prime Video focussing more on their "Original Series" stuff, that some of those series are pretty decent; BUT, in particular, their most recent Amazon Studios flick, "All the Old Knives"..... WOW. I'm sure you've seen it by now and this was definitely something special. Probably not very rewatchable, once you know the twist, but man that first go through this flick was excellent! So I say all that just to say that, to some degree I understand Amazon's decision to focus more on their original material.

I’ve seen many of the movies on this list - Blow Out is one that I would recommend. And I’ve been into action flicks lately - the kind of movie that keeps your attention but you don’t have to think too hard about while watching - so a rewatch of The Recruit was also in order, as was a first viewing of Battleship (I think that was in another of your lists). But can you believe that I had not yet seen Cast Away? You are definitely right about how the ending will hit differently depending on where you are in life.

I watched the movie over two days. I was watching it late in the evening at first. I gave up on it after watching the scenes with the woman who's limbs had been chopped off, followed shortly by a scene where the antagonist fires arrows at the family, seemingly for fun. I had to stop the movie and went to bed. And then I had a nightmare that was inspired by those scenes that is not worth reliving by relating here. The next day I decided to continue watching.
While those early scenes were a bit too much for me, the rest of the movie was great. It definitely was very much like The Seven Samurai and (of course) The Magnificent Seven. I thought that the cinematography was incredibly beautiful, and the ending was quite poetic (though I thought that there was no other way it could have ended).
As much as I liked the rest of the movie, I'm not sure I could recommend it to people in good conscience without a strong warning. This movie joins the category in my mind of movies that you definitely should watch only once and never revisit again. I include in that category "A Clockwork Orange" and "Requiem for a Dream". And now, "13 Assassins".

I don't know if Amazon is giving up on movies. But they seem to be positioning toward the original content and being a platform for smaller productions. It still has more movies by far than any other service. Due to just about anyone being able to put their movie on there. It's an amazing place to search for homebrew-style movies and horror. Very low budget.

you mightve omitted mention if it cause its not strictly an actioner so much as a thriller, but McTiernan also did Hunt For Red October - for me his best work after Die Hard

A bit of trivia. The character Tommy Johnson in Oh Brother, Where Art Thou is loosely based on the "devil at the crossroads" story of blues legend Robert Johnson. Tommy was played by blues musician Chris Thomas King.

The Hundred-Foot Journey. The best film I never heard of. Produced by Spielberg and Oprah Winfrey. A beautiful, unknown cast except for Helen Mirren (who was great). A drama for the whole family.

You did it again, Young Frankenstein is in my top 5 favorite movies! I quote it All. The. Time. "Abby Normal" "You mean, ab-normal?" "Yes, that sounds right" Ahahahahahahaha Classic. If you can, watch the gag reel for that movie, oh my gosh, and apparently Igor biting the minks was ab-libbed. I could go on....I won't.

Once Upon a Time in the West tops TGB&U for me, but not by much. I've never seen 13 Assassin's or Raging Bull (don't know how I've never seen that one). Thanks for tips.

I agree w/ you about Once Upon a Time. Makes me think you'll probably love 13 Assassins and it sounds like you already know you're way behind on Raging Bull.

Have to disagree, in that I feel "Once Upon a Time in The West" was "the epitome of Leone' movies". I saw it the week it came* out & was "blown away". It's probably my "all tome favorite movie".
*what an event; they even passed out a "program about it", when my Dad & I got our tickets. Never remember that happening before, or really, since!

I agree that The Good The Bad and the Ugly is one of the best movie since forever and will be for eternity lol. I watched it again, not so long ago and each time I discover it and remember how epic it is at the same time. The score omg . Inoubliable. The first time I saw Fargo it blew my mind and I laughed so hard. A stellar cast, all of our favorites : Peter Stromare, Frances McDormand, Steve Buscemi. It's a must watch and an absolutely must rewatch. Now I need to see Blow Out. Ty.
