journey 2 and hollow man i have seen and agree that they are for sure worth a watch for anyone who hasn't seen them i will add that hollow man does contain brief nudity
Berlin Syndrome looked like a re-imagining of the 60's move "The Collector" to me, which *was* better, because Terrance Stamp is great and it demonstrated Stockholm syndrome before it had a name. But I did enjoy Cleaner, solid cast really and not bad at all plot twists. And I liked Kevin Bacon in Hollow Man. I'll enjoy revisiting Heist and look forward to Blackhat, The Phantom Thread, given the cast Closer, and watching Nocturnal Animals again, so damn good.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre was, at least in part, filmed in the Austin, TX area. I was an EMT/Firefighter at the time and my company did the medical standby for the Jeep chase/ crash scene. Pretty cool. The flock of birds that flies erratically was spontaneous because it occurred naturally during the filming of the Jeep scene. Cool stuff.
If you wanna see some crazy bird scenes in Austin, just go to the Walmart on slaughter and 35 in south Austin. I get creeped out by all the damn birds Everytime I go there. Every tree branch, security light, and power line is solid shoulder to shoulder birds
"The Foreigner" was surprisingly intense & gritty beyond the action sequences, Jackie Chan in a serious role was superb. I'm not a Woody Allen fan but "Midnight in Paris" was well-done for those seeking respite in nostalgia.
Not a big Jackie Chan fan, but The Foreigner was one of the best films I've seen in a long time. And Pierce Brosnan was superb in his role as conflicted playing both sides IRA boss. Was good to see Jackie in a meaty serious role, and he did it so well.
Fresh (1994) is a really powerful movie that was on Netflix about a kid growing up in Brooklyn as a very young drug dealer. It has some very powerful imagery and might not suit all viewers. It depicts a lot of violence and gritty situations with young kids dealing with things like corruption poverty and racial tensions. Definitely worth a watch if you able to handle these themes

Nocturnal Animals is a must-see/rewatch. Aaron-Taylor Johnson gives a breakout performance. Also look for him at the end of Tenet as the character Ives. And I can't say enough about Michael Shannon! He never puts a foot wrong, even as Elvis in Elvis & Nixon. No lie!
Guys you have to watch 'Minnal Murali' on Netflix. It is the best superhero movie from India. It is a Malayalam movie and it holds the record of fourth most watched non - english film worldwide.
I have to add DESTINATION WEDDING - Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder have the only speaking parts in this, my first, totally negative humor movie. We loved it. The mountain lion is priceless.
Wouldn’t it be great if Netflix could curate ‘playlists’ that you could share with others, like Apple Music and Spotify? I could then follow Darren and make my picks straight for the Netflix UI. Just a thought.
Great idea. But I think Netflix won't do it because then people won't watch the brand new stuff when it's out. They push for current popular stuff more with top tens.
Not a movie, but a short-run British mystery that I just watched called "Stay Close" turned out to be really good. Eddie Izzard has a small role in it.
Extraction best action movie I have seen in a long time. I was surprised to see how much action was in that movie. It was relentless nonstop action. Don't know why it's rated 6 on IMDb. I rated it a 10. IMDb ratings are stupid sometimes.

My wife and I put on The Foreigner one night because we couldn't find anything else to watch. I highly, highly recommend this movie. Easily one of the best revenge movies ever made.
So much goodness to say about Nocturnal Animals, from the unique plot structure, to the cinematography, and oh that scene on the highway. However, it is the performances (lead and especially supporting) that are among the best I can recall in a recent film.
@@jpicard81 amazing pick up. I think that it was a film about bad decisions, regret and the fact that second chances don't always come. After all Gyllenhaal's character has a quote I just pulled up: "When you love someone you work it out, you have to be careful with it, you don't just throw it away - you might never get it again.”
There was another movie called Extraction. The one with Hemsworth was foreign made and for some reason Hemsworh was on the outs for Hollywood and the movie was shuffled off to Buffalo.
Thanks so much for including Nocturnal Animals. It’s easily in my top 10 all time favourite movies. Wish Tom Ford would ditch the frocks & make more movies. This is a classic
I don't mean this as a knock, but most of your lists are about 50/50 for me, usually. I've seen almost half of these movies, and I have to say, based on your descriptions of the ones I have seen, I feel I have to give the rest of them a shot, even if they aren't my normal type of movies, because I fully agree with your ratings/reviews on the ones I have seen. Good list, I'll check 'em out!
I agree. While I love the host's presentation, I usually don't like most of the films listed. Just a matter of taste, I suppose. I like obscure movies and I find my favorites in the dollar stores and used goods stores. Once in a great while, I'll see a movie listed in the video that I love.
Definitely agree with Hollowman. Such a fun little horror flick, like you said with a good sprinkle of action at the end. Not sure back when it came out, why so many people criticized it. It was a great take on the original where the theme and plot were the same, where main character turns into a villain because his serum turns him eventually insane. Just with way better technology and fun effects for year 2000. This was a Paul Verhoeven movie which many of his films are great . . . and don’t usually let down . . i.e. . . Robocop, Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, and another underrated film - Black Book!!!!! :-)
I agree that the 2003 chainsaw remake is the best yet. Another hugely underrated horror movie is Incident in Ghostland. I rate this one a solid 8! And.. Unlike the title suggests, it has nothing to do with ghosts whatsoever.
Heist with Gene Hackman is one of those movies that stands on the ledge of being a really good movie, but never makes the leap, even though it has an excellent cast (almost). It does not help that David Mamet cast his girlfriend, Rebecca Pigeon, in it and, frankly, her performance is lackluster at best. It has an interesting story and some good twists.
Watched some of these, will watch some others you recommended... However, you reminded me of a TV show by Netflix I recently watched and consider it very underrated. "Midnight Mass". It's for those who like horrors that lean to classical ones. The only problem I found with it was occasionally pacing an dialogues/monologues. Don't get me wrong; they are very well written and executed, intelligent and overall great, BUT... At times, they are incredibly long! So, if you like somewhat classic, traditional horrors and are willing to go through sometimes extremely long dialogue/monologue sessions, you will find this awesome. Most of hate it collected in reviews are, in fact, due to stuff already mentioned and because people who don't like classic horrors just disliked it with no reason. I highly recommend
Truly a good underrated movie list. Nice variety. Love seeing that you included Osmosis Jones. I remember that was way better than I thought it was going to be back in the day and I definitely watched that a couple of times on HBO back in the day when it came out. Chris Rock had very high popularity at the time and you can never go wrong with Bill Murray. The story was much more fun and enjoyable than I thought it would be and overall it's a really enjoyable flick.

Excellent selections! I go to Netflix and put those suggestions I like on my list. Saves me running through the entire universe of movie choices. Good work. A big thanks from me.
Just watched Blackhat from this recommendation- it was very good! Thank you- I've always like Michael Mann's work (Heat, Collateral, The Insider), and I liked the build-up, music, and action.
I personally think Berlin Syndrome should be higher on the list. I thought it was excellent. Performances were great! Really tense film. In a similar vein as Misery in that someone is being imprisoned against their will.
Have you seen "Room" with Brie Larson? That movie has the scariest 7 minutes at the end that I have ever seen and it's not a horror movie Now I have to watch Berlin syndrome...
Hey Darren: Took your suggestion and watched "The Foreigner" this afternoon. The old Jackie Chan is just as good as the young Jackie Chan. I'll have to check out some of the others from the list. Thanks.
Heist is a treat. Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo, Sam Rockwell, Mamet's go to guy Mickey Jay make this a pleasurable watch. As usual with a Mamet film, fast crisp dialogue. Solid film.

Nice to see Berlin Syndrome on the list, I hope more people check it out. I worked on the film during the Melbourne leg of the shoot, was a great crew and cast to work with (Teresa is a total sweetheart) . Not a film for everyone but it's one of the better films I was involved with.
I need to check out Let Me In again. What I remember is it didn't capture the realism and creepiness of the original. It seemed Amaricanized, as in it seemed more stylized. The original made me feel unsettled. Thanks for the list though dude!
There will be blood is in my top 10 of all time bests. I watch it at least twice a year since it's release. A great movie for authors to learn show not tell. The subtext is brilliant.
Donnie Brasco. Lefty Rugierro was a made man in Bonnano family. What Lefty didnt achieved was a promotion, he got stuck at the soldier level his entire life, mostly because of his gambling addiction. Forge' bout it!
‘’Midnight in Paris” don’t let the Woody Allen directorship put you off, you will be pleasantly surprised 😲. Just a nice, genuine feel good movie 🎥 . It helps if you have a literary background, but high school level knowledge will do.
Extraction had 100 million views its first month of release. If it was in the theater for $15 a ticket, it would have made 1.5 billion...the first month.
The Cleaner is an excellent movie. Journey 2 & Osmosis Jones (some bad language) are good family movies. The Foreigner is fantastic! Let me in is a really good horror movie that holds well with it's original. Donnie Brasco is a wonderful mobster style movie. Love these choices.
We loved Wheels of Fortune. You have to watch all the way through to the end where they show the out takes. When he talks about heart stoppers. That was our absolute favorite part.
the atmosphere of "Let the right one in" is far better than "let me in". It is cold, erie, snowy, gloomy and because of the time of year always dark out. But i enjoyed both
Extraction is Netflix's most viewed movie of all time. It's a well known successful movie. It's not underrated at all. On some websites it's rating sucks so you can say it's underrated in that way. But for me it's 10/10 movie. Relentless action for 2 hours straight.
Not on this list. However, I stumbled on a great hidden gem of a movie. "The Captain" released in 2017... ...This a German produced movie with English subtitles, made in B&W. A fascinating drama, loosely based on history. This takes place in the last months of WW2. A time of chaos with the German war machine falling apart. A revelation of human despair that could have happened at any time in history. This movie is well told with great acting, direction, lighting, editing and pace. I consider this movie to be a true masterpiece. *Make sure and watch the scenes during the credits.
Being born in 71 and growing up in the beginning of video rentals has completely jaded me. Plus, I worked at video store(not blockbuster; they weren't around yet) in high school. I always look forward to something I haven't seen, which isn't a whole lot.

No big revelations here but two of my favourites on Netflix are I DONT FEEL AT HOME IN THIS WORLD ANYMORE and IM THINKING OF ENDING THINGS.
THANKS
Nobody slept on Donnie Brasco. This is one of the best Gangster flicks ever. Thanks for the recommendations!
You nailed it once again. “Let me in “ is definitely a sleeper!!! Excellent movie. Ditto.
I personally think Berlin Syndrome should be higher on the list. I thought it was excellent. Performances were great! Really tense film. In a similar vein as Misery in that someone is being imprisoned against their will.
Have you seen "Room" with Brie Larson? That movie has the scariest 7 minutes at the end that I have ever seen and it's not a horror movie
Now I have to watch Berlin syndrome...
I agree. It is the story, the characters and the vibe that make the movie very good.
I like a movie with a plot.
Nocturnal Animals was great! Keep it up D
Lefty Two Guns is Al Pacino’s best ever performance in my opinion.
Thanks for another good list!
Donny Brasco is easily my favorite Gangster film. Yeah, I said it, and it's true. Stellar performances and I LOVE the dialogue. Yo FORGETTABOUT IT.
Watching The Foreigner now. 18 minutes in and Pierce Brosnan seems like a good guy. You said without spoilers but mentioned he was a villain. 🤷🏻♂️
Its Moretz not mortez.
Hey Darren: Took your suggestion and watched "The Foreigner" this afternoon. The old Jackie Chan is just as good as the young Jackie Chan. I'll have to check out some of the others from the list. Thanks.
Couldn't agree more on the TCM remake. Intense and scary...the film's vibe is like being in a nightmare you can't wake up from.
Heist is a treat. Gene Hackman, Delroy Lindo, Sam Rockwell, Mamet's go to guy Mickey Jay make this a pleasurable watch. As usual with a Mamet film, fast crisp dialogue. Solid film.
Phantom thread is wonderful. Not his Best Buy’s it’s PTA so much better than most.
... and that funny, wicked ending was great.
I don’t think anyone expects their email not to be sold when they sign up for a free newsletter. That being said your guarantee has always held weight and it’s refreshing to experience such genuineness.
Congrats on the website launch! Hope you will take/ have taken some time to celebrate such a monumental accomplishment in building your brand. It’s kind of amazing stuff really.
Nice to see Berlin Syndrome on the list, I hope more people check it out.
I worked on the film during the Melbourne leg of the shoot, was a great crew and cast to work with (Teresa is a total sweetheart) . Not a film for everyone but it's one of the better films I was involved with.
I think Theresa Palmer is the actress in discovery of witches? I need to see that.
@@janethalken8269 yes that's her.
I need to check out Let Me In again. What I remember is it didn't capture the realism and creepiness of the original. It seemed Amaricanized, as in it seemed more stylized. The original made me feel unsettled. Thanks for the list though dude!
I was surprised by The History of Future Folk. Really enjoyable!
There will be blood is in my top 10 of all time bests. I watch it at least twice a year since it's release. A great movie for authors to learn show not tell. The subtext is brilliant.
Apparently we rate the underrated differently. Lot of movies that are on my favorite movie list.
Donnie Brasco. Lefty Rugierro was a made man in Bonnano family. What Lefty didnt achieved was a promotion, he got stuck at the soldier level his entire life, mostly because of his gambling addiction. Forge' bout it!
Nocturnal Animals was brilliant.👍
Closer is one of my all time favorite movies. I will never tire of rewatching it.
I think you should swap hollow man with the invisible man it has redefined the stalking genre
Yeah I liked The Cleaner.
But i enjoyed both
I thought Extraction got plenty of attention back in the day. It did very well, from what I can recall. I really enjoyed it.
Extraction is Netflix's most viewed movie of all time. It's a well known successful movie. It's not underrated at all. On some websites it's rating sucks so you can say it's underrated in that way. But for me it's 10/10 movie. Relentless action for 2 hours straight.
I was hoping you'd put Felon on this list! Shot Caller is really good too, but Felon is better.
Wow. I had to pause at your #20 pick. If that's the end of the list, this is fixing to be quite a hot list! I thoroughly enjoyed extraction.
Being born in 71 and growing up in the beginning of video rentals has completely jaded me. Plus, I worked at video store(not blockbuster; they weren't around yet) in high school. I always look forward to something I haven't seen, which isn't a whole lot.
