Stay tuned till the end of the video where Alex and I discuss the typical fees you’ll have to pay when renting in Japan! It’s very different than North America😅💸
Please do more videos of apartments or houses but from different places on japan because its very rare to seeing videos that talk about this and you should about salary wages if somebody want to work in japan what are the salary to people who have are professional or to find work in any place
Omg I love the apartment but I wouldn't pay that much money, I could build a house Cheaper than that on uk.
😱💖😃👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👋👋👋👋👋👋
Thanks to your friend, Alex, for such a great insider tour and all of the info. It’s highly doubtful I’ll ever be able to travel to Japan, much less live there in style, but this was very interesting!
I guess having a garden makes a 7000$ a moth difference 😱
This place is crazy, it's awesome seeing an oven.
I like how Sharla is the cameraman for Chris and in return Sharla is still the cameraman for her own video 😂
I let him do the broll 😂
First thing I noticed too
That's what I was going to say! 🤣
Sounds like a good deal, no?
Maybe these comments will shame him into doing camera duty next time
Legend has it that Chris is still rolling on the floor in one of the houses.
In both mate ;) Talking like you don't know Chris...
a true floorgang legend
You know you've been living in Japan a long time when you can tour an apartment with a dedicated clothes-hanging room, a four-car living room, and a rooftop garden the size of an apartment, and you can still walk into the second apartment and say, "Wow, an OVEN! A *real oven*!" 🤣
I feel privileged af when Sharla is like “a REAL oven?!” And “if you have any type of dishwasher, you’re probably well off”
For us in San Diego, the “well off” mark is if you have central AC or not lol we didn’t have AC for the longest and then I suffered heat exhaustion and almost passed out and we finally live in a place with Central AC!
Some things are just common in some countries while not in other countries. If you had a Japanese toilet in a western country, that'd be considered very well off but obviously not the case in Japan. Underfloor heating is very common in South Korea, even in cheap apartments, but it is considered very expensive and rare here in Australia.
@@Keirabug Central AC is "Well off" in the states. Most houses in Aust have a Central AC unit but it's not considered "Well off"
I live in Tokyo and I (or my parents, to be more accurate) have a built-in oven and dishwasher and yet my parents never led us to believe we were well-off... I feel lied to.
We always want what we don't have. Lol.
good coordination between yourself and Chris - my notifications came in a minute apart!
I didn’t know who to watch first
I watched chris first XD
@@hellopsp180 you saved the best until last then!
@@ljr35 😂😉
I got the notification days apart....freakin youtube
I like this one more than the 20k apartment. The 20k one had these really narrow spaces and this one is more open.
Same, more impressed with this "cheaper" apartment, relatively speaking 😂
Best part of the 20.000 one was the garden tbh. I like the look and openness of this one more
Yeah but the $20k one had a whole rooftop.
“Is that an oven!?”
“What’s this!? (to dishwasher)”
Wow you really have been in Japan for a long time 😂
And then they proceed to completely ignore spacetoilets.
@@alexeysaranchev6118 I'll take an oven or a dishwasher over a space toilet any day lmao
I shudder at the mention of upfront fees just to afford that rent! Thank you for showing us a side of renting that most of us will never see in Japan!
Upfront fees are already horrendous for a regular apartment here😂😭
@@sharlainjapan no joke! Really discourages looking for new places haha...
Real estate in Tokyo is insane. Wish it got reworked I feel like it is such a scam when you move in. Love the video, thanks for sharing so much info!
It really is😅But like most things in Japan it probably won't be changing anytime soon🙃
@@sharlainjapan The prices in japan are so insane. In most other places this would be a 3000-4000$ appartment.
@@StAngerNo1 Where I'm from in the US this couldn't even compete with a $500,000 house in a highly desirable neighborhood. The expense is outrageous, makes me thankful for what I have!
@@StAngerNo1 In terms of how it looks and what it has inside, I agree it's not that crazy, but it has that price because 1. The size of it in comparison to other apartments and, probably the more important factor, 2. The location it is in. I would be willing to bet that a lot of the price of that apartment is because of the location. If you just simply look at the apartment by itself, disregarding other factors, it would indeed be too much money.
I stayed in a capsule hotel for 2 weeks for 625 dollars. Their breakfast is bread, butter and coffee 🤦♀️
Can we talk about how at 3:58 he pulled out that laptop so smoothly
What kinda black magic is this I've never seen Tokyo apartments like this!
I got insanely lucky my first 2 visits to Tokyo I stayed with family in ARK Forrest terrace in roppongi (they don’t even live in japan any more so I can say that) and that was one of these insane Japanese apartments it was insane even had desk staff that were very helpful when my friend lost her phone in an arcade calling them for us and giving us a note to give to them to get it back as we spoke no Japanese at all
@@KTclarkemullen I’ve been in houses like this in Toronto and New York but Tokyo? No way. One day maybe but buying as a foreigner is not the easiest
That's because you're not rich lol
Anthony Kruna my uncle was high up in a very very big company so they paid for the apartment I believe
Get out more
I like the crossovers between Sharla and Chris, their styles complement each other.
I’m Japanese and living in Tokyo but I have never seen this kind of apartments in person 😭🥺😱✨ thank you for sharing!! ❤️
That's because our Culture has'nt been about currency wealth and fancy Thing's like other Countries have been like, Here In Japan It's always been about physically living with what we need and not what fancies us.
@@erinasherton8411 you have to be kidding me, Japan is immensly rich
it's all depend on which part of tokyo you live and how much money you have!
Chris's is definitely the more cinematic video, Sharla's is the more practical.
These were fun.
Great video thanks! The concept of key money (礼金 reikin) started right after WW2. After the massive bombing of Tokyo and many other major Japanese cities, accommodation was incredibly scarce and paying a bribe to a landlord was the best way to guarantee housing.
Lol they effed around and found out
I want to know how Alex created a real estate company in Tokyo at his age! With an influx of foreigners and increasing demand for english assistance in finding a home. That man has found himself a future!
Probably with the partner in his business that he mentioned. I bet his business partner is Japanese.
I actually think this place is nicer than the 20k a month apartment.
I was thinking the same thing.
Me too, I think the 20k has a more expensive land as its only a walk from harajuku street, the 20k apartment also looks a bit old.
The dog washing garden is at least an extra 5k.
Yeah location definitely makes the difference - and the garden, since they're so uncommon in the city
That garden though, does make a huge difference, lets be real. It is like having private mini forest in the middle of the city.
That's nicer than most houses in America. One thing that I wanna know is how did he become a realtor in Japan? I feel like it would be hard to do seeing as how he's a foreigner
I would assume because most people who purchase apartments like this run companies and can speak english really well.
He created his own company because of the influx of foreigners into japan. Who better to help a foreigner than a foreigner himself i guess
@@kingnemon8352 oooooooh that makes sense. Now a new question is how he was able to get started, bc i assume he'd have to work under a Japanese company before he could start his own
@@crabblossom A bit fuzzy on the details so take this with a fist of salt. If I remember correctly one of the base criteria for starting a company in Japan as a foreigner is to be able to employ a minimum of 2 full time workers or something like that to ensure you're a benefit to the economy, might've been that they need to be native Japanese as well. So it's a steep hill for getting started for sure and the guy deserve mad props for making it.
@@cegie that makes sense. Yeah, I'm impressed bc I've heard that just trying to move to Japan as a foreigner is hard af, so I can only imagine the obstacle course he had to go through to get to the point he's at now.
Chris could not be Sharla's cameraman as hi was still rolling on the floor of the apartment... xD
Chris Just lost Notification competition 😂😂
Wow, living in Tokyo is so expensive! But actually, I prefer this ¥ 13,000 apartment over the most expensive one.
This one has more bathrooms and the space looks better distributed.
It doesn't have cramped corridors, but also doesn't have any private gardens.
even the difference between this apt and the $20k apt are vast. it's crazy
Even for the difference of 7000 $ you could rent a pretty cool apartment.
Honestly, I'd choose this one over the $20k one any day. It seems to have more usable living space, plus washer/dryer combos, an oven, and a dishwasher! Sign me up for that, yo. Don't need no rooftop garden or private elevator when I can have washer/dryers, an oven, and a dishwasher! ;)
@@Wyrdwad My thoughts exactly
The American's on house hunters international would still call this small.
Scott Alexander - low income Americans (like me) would think it's a palace.
I mean, it's huge for Japan, but it's not necessarily huge for the whole world yeah. My place was about this size just with different proportions (fewer bedrooms but larger, kitchen bigger but living room smaller). Plus I had a full basement in addition. Mine wasn't as nicely done as these, these are really fancy, but then my home was $40K forever and this is $13K a month.
@@kaldo_kaldo But then your house wasn't in the middle of a very expensive city. This wouldn't be cheap on Manhattan either.
Also, loved Chris' video, but this was way more in depth feeling and laid back too. Thanks for laying everything out and showing other listing! How neat!
By the title I thought you meant your apartment and was floored for a minute there 😅
Same here! Lmao
ONE DAY. 😂
Dat RUclips money tho!!! 😲
Watching Aboard in Japan and Sharmeleon back to back :) 👍🏼
Me sitting in my living room the size of the laundry room watching this
Sharla I don't think you know how to pet a dog XD
Can you tell I’m not a dog person lol
Same. Haha. Looked like a cat pet and not a dog pet
Yeah you said “ooohhh” when it tried to lick you 😹😹😹
I think she was only trying to avoid the dog licking her hand while she was filming. Which is a thing I would do too.
@@lepee5830 hey, don’t shake it till you try it. Dog saliva is often known for its anti-aging properties. Your hands could look so young!
I have just finished watching both videos and I have to say, this is my favourite apartment of the two
Another great video! It was also really interesting to see the differences between your and Chris’s filming/editing styles when covering with the same topic. Enjoyed both :)
This apartment is so much better than the other showed in Chris's video. It has walls and it's not narrow and has so much more things. It's very interesting to see these :)
I’d love to see more videos like this, I have no plans of moving to Japan but I find it very interesting
This is my first time watching one of the your videos. Seeing that both you and Chris did a video on these amazing apartments, that had to start with this one.
This was another amazing video and a stunning looking apartment. I really can't image being able to afford a place like that.
Onward to another of your videos.
Thanks for watching!! Appreciate it :)
This was fun! So interesting. Thanks Sharla!
Your reactions and laughter communicate such a joyful presence ☺️
I'm too broke to watch this
😂😂 me too
@@constantvitriol7426 You're never too broke to look. My immigrant grandmother who suffered through WW1, the Russian Revolution, the Great Depression and WW2 always said, "Looking costs nothing" and enjoyed it immensely.
Same 😅
Its true. I watched this, and just as I was done I got a notification that I owed $150 in poorsod-fees
“This is gonna be depressing”. - Chris Broad
Seeing apartments and houses in japan is probably the only reason why I feel glad I live in America. It’s sad that she gets so happy seeing a dryer and a washer machine. Bathrooms, dishwasher, full closet and an oven.
Great video Sharla!
Yay, never been so early for a video before.
Wow, it's so spacious! I don't know what I would do with all of that space! Love all the kitchen space and those bathrooms! Yes please!
An American, Brit, and Canadian walk into an apartment
*That apartment was 1944 Normandy*
Avery the Cuban-American llolololololol and I'm Russian!
Listening to a Canadian, American, and British person speak to each other made me pick up on American inflections. Lol.
Hahaha they’re missing an Australian 😂
Don’t try, if you speak English, you are an Anglo-Saxon.
I'm trying to figure out his accent - something about his speech isn't _quite_ standard American. I'm leaning somewhere west of the rockies... maybe Nevada or somewhere, but IDK...
I'm curious about where in the US he's from now - I could be way off!
"because," "but," "closet," "apartment," "so," and "show," and more just have these little hints of being different from what my ear expects, but maybe I'm just too used to non-US accents of the English spoken by foreigners in Japan...
Great video Sharla
Seeing what more typical rents were was interesting (I mean the tour itself goes without saying!) really cool how in both your & Chris’s video the open-plan kitchen can be blocked off when you want. Lots to be envious of!
Welcome to another episode of
"Do you feel broke yet?"
I know I do. But for real though, amazing videos as always, yours and Chris's are always amazing. Thank you for the information as well
Notification gang from Australia 🇦🇺
really enjoyed this!
Just your reaction alone Shar!!! It spells out the living differences!!! 💜💜💜💜
When both Chris and Sharla's videos went up at the same time. 🤗🤗
Then knowing that they were actually together. Love them ...

(I do wish that ... 😅🤫)
Hey Alex you should do RUclips, mate. We would love to watch how someone starts and runs a business in Japan especially one that caters to foreigners. It's hard to find info on how people can invest and build their bank balance in Japan 🙏
Also it gets your brand out there as an added benefit ☺️
Was waiting for your and Chris' videos to pop up! ♥️
100m2 lounge and dining room !! Insane !! That's bigger than my house here in Australia. The echo says it all. Great video. Stay safe xx
I hope one day you will own a lovely big house 🏠 in whatever country you would like settle on ❤😊
never thought Japan 🇯🇵 is a good place for investing in properties / real estate due to "high cost of living" especially for a foreigner investor; perhaps i am wrong & shouldn't say that.
Really thanks a lot , glad that you made a video regarding properties 💐
My father in law was based in Tokyo in the late 90’s and back then the company supplied apartment in Ebisu (Tokyo) was $16K a month...... it was a split level penthouse...hard to find ex pat packages like that now days you are lucky if they pay moving costs..
Awesome episode!!!
Wow!! This was amazing!! You always learn something new everyday....... most of the time!! This apartment is awesome!! 💖💖💖
oh look, it's every house I've ever built in the sims come to haunt me. smallish bedrooms and a living/kitchen/dining room that's far too big.
Hi Sharla, you're someone that is good! Apparently!
Hahaha so I’ve heard😂
This was so interesting!!!!!! Thank you so much for the video!
Awesome sharla!
By the way, are you going to change your name to “Sharzard” when you hit 1 million subscribers???
Yep! :)
@@sharlainjapan Mega sharzard at 5m?

Honestly prefer this apartment over the 20,000 one Chris toured
Ok, we don't need to fight over them then. You take this one, I'll have the garden place. 🤝
Me too. Although, some of the stuff is out of date. And the bedroom carpets need to be replaced. But its still pretty. And im basing it off of homes around my neighborhood.
But that rooftop garden on the other one was so good and probably accounted for the extra $7000.
@@brendanfarthing very very true. I meant more so the inside
Hi Sharla, thanks for the great tour of the "UPPER CLASS" apartments, I've always wondered about the price and style.
Amazing videos like always, keep up with the amazing videos and wish the best for your future.
It's so funny how in the U.S. a double sink, walk-in closet, washer/dryer and laundry room, oven, dishwasher, and multiple bedroom house is the normal. However, most places don't have a TV in their bathroom! 😅 the cultural and living differences across countries is amazing
I think it's more about the physical space in both coutries
still, i think this apartment would cost a lot in the US
It's not "normal" if you're in the middle of a megalopolis such as New York, Chicago, or Los Angeles. This is the largest metropolitan area on earth so obviously we're talking about insane real estate prices.
Both of you Sharla and Chris upload at the same time about same thing 😂👍😉
Wow thanks for always showing us awesome things across Japan :) This video makes me really grateful for my spacious home in north america
I loved this vid! I'm totally obsessed with apartments and real estate. Do you think you can do a video on expat living? Like, all the details and maybe tour some places? That would be so cool!
I don't care about the appartement, all I'm interested in is that adorable little black pug 🥺
Also when I first read the title I thought you had written the price in Yen and thought that it wasn't too bad for Tokyo lmao
That doggy is so adorable! Who needs a fancy apartment when you can have a cute, lovable, loyal pet. 😊
I was curious about what type of job you would need to have to be able to afford a place like this--I'm glad Alex answered this question! Is it very unusual for a non-native Japanese person (I'm guessing Alex is?) to own a real-estate company in Japan?
This was so useful Sharla - I know of you through Pippin's Inn as she has sent me mail before. I found your video very informative, when you looked at other properties!
Love when the dog featured in the video also got instagram mentioned in the description
I'm just going to call key money "legally allowed scam" from now on.
I once looked at an apartment and they wanted £150 just to hand over the key!! never mind deposits, months up front, credit checks, that was on top. and you didn't even get it back when you left! I told them right where to put their key! XD
I can imagine all those Japanese landlords shaking with fear at the very thought of it.......
@@me4vampires not their fault you cant respect others cultures and societal norms

Incredible how expensive this is! And except for the huge living room it's not even that big by European standards :)
The price difference between what you pay and what you get in different places always gets me. Where I live, you can buy a castle or a 20,000sq ft (1,858sq meter) house for $150,000- $350,000 USD.
What?! Where do you live? I live in CA and for $300,000 you get a small 3 bedroom old house lol
Midwest U.S.
great video, and very good job on you and chris cross promoting each others videos!
I"d pick yours. They're both crazy $ but your floor plan & etcs, seem to fit the price tag better. Thanks for the videos.
Chris brought me here.
I saw his first.
Better luck next time Sharla 😉
Let him be the spinoff next
I'm shocked at apartment prices there 😳 I get it, its in Tokyo.. But wow 😱. Here in Ohio I had a home built in 2004.. Its a tri level, 3 fully finished floors, 4 bedrooms, 3 full baths, 2 living rooms & its a total of 2700 square feet
Cost 225,000.00. And if a person was to rent out these houses you could possibly get up to around 2200.00 a month, if that. Mortgages on these houses would be about 1300.00 a month.
great video, keep it up
love from Greece!
Hey Sharla . another good video . thanks for sharing . watching this while having lunch up here in Northern Ontario Canada .. hope you are doing good in Japan
i am pretty sure if this was Sharla's home she would have a cat room specially for some new grey kitties 🐾🐾😺

Being in that apartment, "I feel luxury" lol
i don’t even have enough friends to have the need for 100 sq meters of party space
Don't worry, the people who visit diplomats can hardly be called friends either.
If anyone is curious.
Most times military stationed in Japan does not pay the key money, more than 1 month security, or the extra fees. However it usually has to go through the housing office so options are limited. Germany, Italy and England are basically the same as North America/USA for renting.
Rachel and Jun's channel also have info on renting and on buying/building too.
What a lovely simple kitchen, ooo I love the doors to hide it too.
Haha, I can't believe someone made a rude comment about you getting excited about the oven, here in Costa Rica (or at least the area I'm in ) it's not very common to find an oven in an apartment! And hell yeah, I get excited when I see one!!! 🍪

The kitchen is perfect, there is so much space in there !!
So cool. Thanks for sharing the experience. Your skin is looking great by the way. :)
