One of the best Anthrax songs & songs of the Headbangers Ball era. This song always hit home because I’ve always despised homelessness in AMERICA. We have too many resources available to have the unbelievably large homeless population that we have.

I adored this album. This song is great example of what makes them distinct among the "Big Four". There's a grit, a "street-level" quality, a punk directness that none of the other guys have. The overlap is the distinctive sound of thrash, but they've been the most "grass roots" of any of them.

    • @malargwr15711

Close your eyes to the horror
Close your eyes to the pain
When you live in a box
    No one knows your name
    Living in the street
Moms and kids with nothing to eat
    Welfare hotels
Who says there's no place called hell
    I can't see you
    I can't hear you
    You don't see me
    You couldn't be me
    Who cares wins
There but for the grace of god
There but for the grace of god
Who cares, who cares, who cares, who cares
There but for the grace of god
There but for the grace of god..
    Go you or I
    Open your eyes
    You don't see me
    You couldn't be me
    Invisible could be my name
    Your excuses are so lame
Real pleas fall on deaf ears
    Look away when I'm near
    Freezing cold in winters heat
Burning up can be a teat
    Blisters breaking on my feet
At least I get a subway seat
    I cant' see you
    I can't hear you
    You don't see me
    You couldn't be me
    Who cares wins
There but for the grace of god
There but for the grace of god
Who cares, who cares, who cares, who cares
There but for the grace of god
There but for the grace of god...
    Go you or I
    Open your eyes
    You don't see me
    You couldn't be me
    Who cares wins
    Self help and preservation
    Not now I'm on vacation
    Priority is you
And screw all those around you
Now's the time for you to share
    Indifference you have to care
Deep inside you know it's true
How do I get through to you
Open your eyes to the horror
Open your eyes to the pain
When you live in a box
    No one knows your name

rediscovering this song after many years, I am forced to reflect on some things.
I have been homeless twice in my life, but I was fortunate to have resources (personal funds, generous friends, etc), to quickly pull myself out of it. However, many people are not so lucky, and left vulnerable through no fault of their own.
So, I challenge anyone listening to this powerful song, and reading this post, to help however you can. If you can donate to charitable organizations, do so. If you can volunteer, do so. If all you can do is to give a homeless person the change in your pocket, do so.
    It all helps.
    Remember: WHO CARES WINS.

And until he comes back I am done with ANthrax. In 2004 ANtrax opened for Dio in Pilly and as always for DIo I was front row (I met Ronnie ll the time in Philly)...well I am trans but I am not gay (long story) but Scoot said: "All Paul Stanley fans are gay." Well especially after everything KISS did for them....I made sure I was front row, right-hand side and I wore a beautiful airbrushed Paul shirt...he is my here....Ian looked at me banging his head I yelled at him (read lipe) I popped the Paul shirt at him and said "I AM NOT GAY YOU PIECE OF SHIT." John Bush was DYING laughing during te solo and Ian walked away....asshole.UNtil Spitz comes back they died in 1993 to me.

Rick Animal Taylor Couldn't imagine Slayer doing something like this. Can't imagine Kerry King being particularly sympathetic towards the plight of homelessness tbh.

    Both are great songs, IMO.

Same. But this song came out before Seasons In The Abyss. So shouldn't it be Seasons In The Abyss reminds you of THIS? :)

Anthrax always reminds me of an old boyhood friend. He was mad into them. I hope he's doing well.
Great band with some whopper tunes.

I have always had a deep respect for what you tried to do with this song. Living in Anchorage, AK at the time. Race was really diverse. Most homeless were Natives.

1988 when I first got into Anthrax when I was 16 years old. This song has stuck with me all these years. In retrospect, Anthrax always had a social conscience and credibility Metallica could never have.

I don't know about that - "Disposable Heroes" "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" and "And Justice For All" are pretty socially conscious.
