hi aunty 😊if after we put in the first cup of flour and the dough comes out soft and plyable already not at all grainy, is it necessary to add more water and more flour? pls help
If you feel your dough is to the consistency you like it then it should be ok. However you will have to also see how the rotis come out. I mixed dough by touch for years and only started measuring after I started this channel...
@@GaithreeDeviLuckan thanks alot.......I did such a big blunder cos my consistency was perfect and I went and added a cup of water causing a river in my dish 😭😭😭😭was so sad. I should've just left out the water .....I was under the impression that without extra flour and water, the roti will come out raw🙈🙈 I did try again and there was no need for more water and flour but I had to cut down quantity drastically cos all my flour finished 😅😅but it came out perfect, it even puffed up while toasting 💫🥳
Thank you for all the lovely recipes aunty... your voice and food makes me miss my home Durban... being far away in New Zealand...you bring home all the way here... remind me of my granny... ❤❤
Namaste Ben🙏thank you for sharing your wonderful video with us. It is looking so good.... What I normally do is add oil to my dish before I put in the mixture to avoid it sticking to the dish.
Thank you so much for a brilliant video. May you always have best health and happiness and stay blessed. I will ensure I teach my daughter what I learn so that we always keep our traditional dishes alive. 💝💝💝
Thank you so much Ma for always sharing your recipes with us. You remind me of my late mum. She used to make mealie meal rotis and turn them just like you without burning her fingers. 💟💟💟 Nothing beats experience. Love your channel. God bless you with good health Ma🙏
Thank you for your lovely recipe Aunty Gayatri. My mum in law used to make these for my family all the time. Now she's passed on. I tried this first time today everything came out fine but most of it did not puff up.
Hello aunty, thanks for your sharing your recipes. Can you pls show us how to make tin fish curry pls. I ate it once in durban and could not believe its tin fish as i never made tin fish before. Enjoy watching you cook. Love from cape town
My late mum used make this roti everyday. 😢I miss her so much . I make it for my family. Mum never put margarine tho . So I cook it without any oil or margarine.
Can u put ghee on the both sides while on tawa thank you so much for sharing the recipe lots of luv from Pietermaritzburg God bless you abundantly with good health. Aunty Devi.
Thank you for the insightful video aunty😊😊I'm going to try this recipe soon!! 😀😀My gran used to make soft mealie meal roti in her younger days. Just one question, should I brush the roti with butter once it bubbles up?
You can brush a mixture of butter or margarine with oil (see the dhal roti recipe). Butter alone may make it too brown as butter burns at a lower temperature...

Yes you can add ghee like you would for dhal roti but it will change the texture of the mealie meal rotis.
My sister in Johannesburg, learned from her mother in law how to make rotisserie like that. Yum
Wow this is something new for me looks delicious

Is there a healthier option of mealie meal roti? Excl white flour
Yes you can substitute the white flour one for one with brown/wholewheat flour.
Perfection 👌

Can you show me how to.make brown roti
Hi we will do so, I just made a batch for the recipe that will upload on Sunday but will film it when we do it again.
Don’t you use ghee or melted butter when you fry it?
Not really, but you can use it if you like a richer roti. It could be more crispy as well...
@@GaithreeDeviLuckan thank you. I will try this method.
Definitely trying out now
How did it go?
@@GaithreeDeviLuckan perfect 🥰 I am so happy that I finally found a recipe that is flop'proof.
Thank you so much.

Thank you Maa..but I dont eat margarine...my Late Mom used use s little ghee or butter.. n no oil..but very little! Hope it's ok to do the same...
Yes butter will work the same if not better.
This looks so good. I’ll be trying these out soon.
Can I use chapati flour instead of all purpose flour?
It should work in a similar way. Apologies for the delayed response.
lovely
Thank you!

Hello Gaithree where can i buy a heavy tawa. I am in Durban thanks
Hi you can try to get out to Sattars. They are in the Berea. My thawa is almost 35 years old already.
Will do. Thanks
Ma what is this mealie meal?
Maize flour or maize meal such as Lucky Star or Ace
Yes what is mealie meal
It is a flour made from maize. Here in South Africa there’s a number of brands like Ace or White Star or Nyala.
What is MIELE?? Is it CORNMEAL
Yes it will be similar. However depending on your location your cornmeal could be more rough or finer than our local “mealie meal”
HELO MA I LOVE MELIMEAL ROTI IT TOPS THANK U FOR SHARING LOTS OFF LOVE AMINA
Thank you!
What is mealie meal?
It's called cornmeal from other places 😊 also, most of the corn meal that you'd come across is yellow because they use yellow corn 🌽.
Hi.. I would like to follow Aunty... please could you add this as an option near share etc
What is Mealie?
Here in South Africa we have a flour made from maize - that we call maize meal or mielie meal. Elsewhere it would be corn meal.
Thank you Aunty.
@@GaithreeDeviLuckan Corn meal is a different product. The American version of mielie meal is corn flour. Yes it is indeed very South African, as in the early days the rations provided to indenture labourers did not include flour but mielie meal instead.
