Making Soji For Breakfast

  • Special treat for after biryani or even just for breakfast, or with a few tweaks, a recipe to make Soji for prayer
    250g Semolina
    200g margarine
    1/4 tsp food coloring
    1 tsp elaichi (cardamom) powder
    2 sticks cinnamon
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/2 cup condensed milk
    1 tsp vanilla essence
    750ml milk
    additional water to cook semolina or loosen Soji if required.

    Thank u for sharing my mom taught me to make it this way 40 years ago,the only difference was after pouring in the milk I bake it in the oven for about 15 minutes, soft and loose. ,sprinkle with almonds

    I love this aunty's recipes. I've tried some of them...reminds me of home...❤ I just hurt to see the use of metal spoons in the lovely AMC pots. These pots require plastic or wooden spoons

      Yes I think because we were cut off from india for a long while here in South Africa, new recipes may have developed. Not sure if there is a sweet pudding made with semolina there in India.

      @@GaithreeDeviLuckan I am sure Rava( semolina) kesari and Sooji ( also Semolina) halwa could be called puddings of sorts.
      Love the presentation style of your videos and especially that theres no background music.

      Can confirm. Soji is the same as Sooji/Suji Halwa. Nevertheless in South Africa we like to add cream at the end, makes it even more rich and delicious! And the soji in this video is absolutely divine!

    I have learned to make the soji with butter instead of Rama and I find using eggs beaten makes it light and fluffy needed to watch your make to compare notes the eggs and butter makes taste great

      We leave the eggs out to keep it strictly vegetarian. Yes butter and rama/margarine can be used interchangeably for the most part.

    Hi lallie lookes yammy I make soji but I don't like colouring n I take it off the stove n pour the milk n mix n put it back on number 1 so it does not boil on the stove the glass top is hard to clean. thanks lally n Yr son will make agud chef.

      The condensed milk is optional - if you do not have it increase your sugar and milk according to taste.

    Can I use ghee instead of butter and if so how much ghee

      You can use about 150g ghee instead of the 200g margarine.

      Hi, recipe is as follows:
      250g Semolina

      If it is still too moist you can put the pot into a oven set to 150degrees and let the oven dry out the moisture. Oiliness unfortunately is harder to fix.

    Is the second ingredient butter?

      It is margarine (sorry for using the brand name here in South Africa) but you can substitute directly for butter. There is also times we use ghee instead but this tends to affect the texture and taste more.

    Aunty I'm very surprised that u use margarine Indian community always use pure butter I don't like margarine I only use pure butter thanks

      We use margarine because it is generally much cheaper here. When we can get butter on special price we buy it and also then use it in some recipes.
