      Awww thank you 😊
      It's always hard trying something new for the first time.
      Nik didn't want to go to it because she thought it would be worse than the chemical.
      But now we have it she loves it.
      No more looking for a dump point no more getting splashed while empting it.
      You can do it anywhere.

      @@daveniksadventures2255 Massive positives! We are kiwis arriving in Australia mid-December with our Shih Tzu - Hewson. Will be beginning a two year lap from Melbourne. Super excited for all the adventures to come. We spent 2023 touring NZ so know we love life on the road. The Ogo made sense after having had a cassette toilet here in NZ - even with two cassettes - it was a pain finding dump points for all the reasons you said.🐶🌺

    Hi Dave and Nik, love your video. We bought a caravan just over 2years ago with a chemical flush toilet in it. Used it one time for 3 days came home emptied it rang up the next day and ordered an OGO. We don't travel full time but go away regularly for a few weeks at a time, we absolutely love it and not having to interrupt our time away finding dump points and doing the walk of shame is fantastic. Happy travel's guys hope to run into you guys sometime, I love a chat too Dave 😅

    Hi guys. Good review. We have an OGO now and used a Natures Head in a previous van. We are always amazed that people change out their compost mix so frequently. We’ve travelled for 4 months and changed it once. Even in the last 7 months of travelling around mostly steamy northern Qld, we’ve just emptied ours out for the second time. We will use a public loo if available, but we do use it frequently. We use the starter spray inside the company section each change (we don’t wash out the bucket as you need a small amount of residual compost to start off the next lot). Like you, we run a drier mix rather than a wet mix, and I’ll add a spray of the starter every so often. For the urinal, I’ll empty it every night before bed so there will never be any nasty surprises in the middle of the night, and in the morning if we’re having a travel day. We add a small amount of vinegar and water into the urinal each empty, with a squirt of diluted water and vinegar after each week, and that’s it. We’ve never had a urine smell. We don’t put loo paper into our compost, either. We love our composting toilet and would never go back to a cassette loo. Just as a side note, I do most of the toilet maintenance, not my husband; it’s easy. Happy travels. 😊

    Great video and tips about how you manage your composting toilet. We also have an OGO in our van. We tried diluted Vinegar in the pee bottle and it didnt work as well as diluted Thetford Aqua Rinse. As you mentioned getting the Coir-peat not too dry or too wet is the key. We use the compost toilet cleaner/stimulator on the bowl when cleaning and preparing the bucket for next use.

    Hey Guys,
    Never prepare the coir peat brick without soaking it first and always wear gloves and a fine particulate mask. These bricks have residual fungal Matter in them hence why you sometimes see white spots in them and also in mulch. A fellow caravaner was hospitalised and nearly died of a respiratory illness caused by the micro-particles in the coir peat. We have the same toilet for over a year and love it. Safe travels.

      100% agree, so much more waste with bags for the poop for the sh1t paper etc, they keep saying no smell but then talks about a spray for the smell a chemical here and there a piss ball etc etc. And the old urban myth about the poop only smelling because of the urine is garbage. If you dump a poop in the middle of the room it's gonna stink bad.

    Everyone has a preference and good on you for going the OGO. I think they are much easier to handle than those bigger compostable toilets that you have to carry the whole unit out.
    These are some of the reasons we are back using the chemical toilet.
    1. The urine smell is really strong and for us was far worse than the chemical toilet.
    2. Having the runs does not go well in the compost at all, certainly if you have them bad. It’s like mixing the pee with the poo.
    3. We came across an instance (in WA) when a policemen told us that human waste had to be disposed of in a proper waste facility and not the bin. He probably would have crucified us if we put raw poop on toilet paper in the bin. We were let of with a warning and told to read up on proper disposal of human waste. He wouldn’t even listen when we said caravan manufacturers were installing them as the norm as he said it’s illegal.
    Each to their own but this is why we are back using a chemical toilet.
    Safe travels👍

    • @daveniksadventures2255
      @daveniksadventures2255  Месяц назад

      Yeah it's not for everyone but it is for us.
      Funny he said that what about all those dirty nappies that get thrown in the bins you have to pick up dog poo and put it in a bin ?
      Thanks for watching and commenting on our channel.
      Cheers Dave and Nik 👍🍻🇦🇺

    • @Boggerheartjourneys
      @Boggerheartjourneys Месяц назад

      @ He actually said nappies aren’t supposed to go into bins either. Dog poo he never spoke of because he said humans can get dysentery from adult human waste so maybe that’s why babies poo is not as bad🤷‍♂️.
      I do know councils are cracking down on it as well hence why there’s to be no more human poop left at inskip point near Rainbow Beach. Everyone was getting sick.
      I did look it up after that and found he was right. I’ll still poop in the bush when I need too😂.
      Just a bit of food for thought as like weights, compost toilets may be the next big thing🤔

    I do enjoy your videos. Open and honest and fun. Unfortunately I have seen, and not saying this is you at all, in dry dry dry weather, a woman pouring a HUGE jerry can/bottle size of urine behind their neighbours van against a fence and another man under a tree where children played the next day and putting bags of poo in a park bin on a hot day near picnic tables b4 they drove away. Our hygiene and sanitation has deteriorated 😞 and I wish I had been left in ignorance of these habits. There are dogs, hikers, men taking a pee and now bulk disposal like this. And we also get caught short so we are also not innocent 😔 but we dispose at the dump points. Much respect to you for this post and all the careful people.

    • @daveniksadventures2255
      @daveniksadventures2255  Месяц назад +1

      Yes that's true 👍
      But it's like everything people get lazy and just don't think before doing.
      How many used nappies are just left on the side of the road? People don't pick up their dogs business?
      Consideration has gone out the window these days unfortunately, not by all but some people.
      We have seen a heap of people just dumping their chemical toilet on the ground because the dump point is full or there isn't one around.
      I don't think it matters what toilet you use 🤔 I think you just have to do the right thing with it.
      Cheers Dave and Nik 👍🍻🇦🇺

    • @daveniksadventures2255
      @daveniksadventures2255  Месяц назад

      @billywillychilly we don't just go to the closes tree and pour it
      That is one way you can empty it the other is put it in a toilet or dump point.
      If we have to use the tree way we walk as far away from where people are camping or using an area as possible and never use the same spot twice.

    You pretty much answered all my questions.
    We use our van for weekends away and a couple of times a year for 1-2 weeks at a time.
    Knowing what you know, how would you see its success for our weekends away? You said it lasts for a couple of weeks possibly, so would we just be changing it after a weekend? I can’t see we could leave it between trips 😮no?
    Our chemical toilet only ever really lasts 3 adults 24hrs. And I don’t like the chemical smell.

    Hi guys. I watched your episode on the OGO Origin toilet and we have installed one in our 2009 Traveller caravan. We have had the condensation also and have had the compost getting too damp because We have had a lot of heavy rain up here in Ipswich area and we find that it does get affected so I too have problems following the amount of water and coir peat that is suggested. We have cut the moisture down also but not as much as you have.
    Could you please tell me again…
    DAVE…
    *. How much coir do you use to each fill
    *. How much water would you say you use in the couple of pours that you do
    NIK…
    I use Sukin hand wash in my squirt bottle with water
    What is the pink tablet that you put in the wee catchment area ( not the wee bottle)
    Thanks for your comments.
    Liz

      Sometimes I don't even put water in the mix and I only put enoughpeat in the bucket to cover the top of the stainless steel paddles
      Sometimes I get enough mix to do up to 3-4 goes but it depends on the brick and how tight it was compacted.

    Great review and this seems to be the answer to a maiden’s prayer. Not wishing to be a party pooper (no pun intended). But being devils advocate just wondering when dumping these in bins will be banned. 🤨

      I can't answer that ! I don't know if they will or won't.
      But they still let you dump at a dump point.
      And they say to pick up your dog poo in a bag and put it in the bin. I can't see this being any different.
      If you are wanting to know more maybe contact ogo on the rules and future rules.
      These are questions I can't answer sorry.
      But I know we won't be swapping back.

    We use an Ogo and they are great. We use vinegar and water to spray on the urine bit and the cleaner spray on the number 2’s bit. The cleaner refill is pretty expensive for 5 litres when you include postage. Be careful with the dust from the coir as it’s really bad for your lungs! How did you do your clotheslines on the awning?

    Hi guys. Another question…..
    A. how do you find the convenience of the electric awning just for having a one day stay. Is it stable enough in light wind conditions.
    B. What brand do you have?
    Thanks guys

    • @daveniksadventures2255
      @daveniksadventures2255  Месяц назад

      Our awning is a carefree awning
      There are for's and against for them
      But if we build another van we would get an electric one again.
      This is the first electric awning we have had and we have had about 7 vans now.
      In light winds its ok 👍
      But you can strap it down like you can see in our videos
      Easy to put out and put back its just a one person job
      You can just put it out a foot or all the way.
      And for that we love it. ❤️
      Cheers Dave and Nik 👍🍻🇦🇺

    An interesting review guys. At the moment we are only weekend or max 2-3 weeks traveling at a time so are sticking to,our cassette toilet but are interested in the fact you only use vinegar in the wee compartment, we only use our toilet for number 1s and wonder if this would work for us, normally we use the blue chemical, not sure what it is called. Would definitely go the compost if we were traveling full time.

      Hi! We recently got ours and so far I’m loving it but may I ask where the red light comes on? I also don’t hear the noise from the fan even though the revolving piece work fine. Is there an additional button or switch that we need to activate?

    • @daveniksadventures2255
      @daveniksadventures2255  11 дней назад

      @potosina1960 the red light is the same as the button you use to turn the paddles on to mix the peat. That button will turn red when the wee bucket needs emptying.
      The fan doesn't turn off it is on all the time if you can see it spinning then it working.
      Hope that helps

      The urine is sterile and we dont just pull up and empty it on the first tree where everyone is. We will empty away from public and walk into the bush to do it.
      And once you add the vinegar to it it kills the smell.

    • @daveniksadventures2255

      Yes that's why we said we stopped doing it and it didn't break down or mix in enough for us. But even if we had to empty it every 5 days we still not go back to a chemical toilet.
      It is so much economical and easier to empty not needing a dump point.

    Hi DNA, a question about your OGO if I can please 👍we are thinking of replacing our cassette toilet with the OGO however I’ve heard that composting toilets could get ‘insects’ occurring in the ‘poo’ cassette! Have you had any issues with this happening? 👍🌞

    • @daveniksadventures2255
      @daveniksadventures2255  Месяц назад +1

      No we haven't had that happen yet.
      But we do empty our at around 10 to 15 days
      We do have a mesh over our vent out side so they can't get in that way and Nik hates bugs so keeps the door closed all the time.
      But like we said there is no way we would ever go back to a chemical toilet.
      It isn't just swap out and it's a miracle you do need to work out the compost to suit your needs. What works for us mighten be right for you.
      But it is the best decision we have made getting rid of the chemical toilet and going Ogo.

      A composting toilet…. they are far from being considered a compost toilet demonstrated by you emptying it weekly and tipping the untreated, uncomposted human excrement waste into a plastic bag and dumping this waste in a garbage bin. Interesting that OGO make no reference to their compliance with the Australian Standard for compost toilets AS 1546.4. as under that standard the time frames to achieve composting would far exceed the turn over time for these toilets.
