Tyler Grey grew up in Bakersfield, California, joined the army in 1998 and quickly advanced from training into the 75th Ranger Regiment, 2nd Battalion, spending most of his time there as a Sniper. He spent the rest of his career at Ft. Bragg. Grey deployed four times - two each to Afghanistan and Iraq - before he became disabled from an explosion that occurred during a late-night house raid that turned into a gun-battle in Baghdad in 2005.

As a Marine in 2004/2005 I was back home after fighting in Fallujah. I was fine and no destructive behavior. A month later they told us we were going back, this time to Ramadi. I was convinced I was dead already. That self destructive behavior and need for an adrenaline dump was incredible. I drank more, fought more, chased women more than ever before. I needed to feel alive before I died. Combat vets are an unusual bunch and not many people understand us. Everything Tyler said I felt in my core. Glad to see he’s found some peace. This is a topic that can be talked about for days.

I hear you, when I came back from IRQ, I didn't recognize the need for the adrenaline dump. I use one of my track days right after I came back as an example where I drove that car around that track, with wanton abandon. I gave 2x shits about crashing, and no thought to getting hurt. Drifting through turns at 100mph+. Drove it so hard I broke the suspension lol. Now, I realize where my mind was and know that I've come a LONG way since. I hate to say "normal" because what the hell is that anyway.

I was an airborne MP with the 82nd and 18th Airborne out of Ft Bragg and based out of FOB Kalsu and FOB Delta Iraq from March 04 to April 05. My first week at Kalsu, I remember the photo of the contractors bodies hanging from the bridge. One of them an ex-SEAL. a few of us drivers went up to help out in Fallujah and dang brother, mad respect to you fine Marines. Thank you for your service and sacrifice and that of your brothers. I found myself giggling as well because I know what is like be in those situations and as serious as they are you can't help find something funny about the absurdity of the situation.
you find yourself in the middle of a fire fight and then you have a flat tire and that's when you giggle and think to yourself "REALLY ISN'T THE GUN BATTLE ENOUGH, A FLAT AS WELL" You have to laugh or you will loose it, its been proven to be a form of pressure release in a high stress situation.
Jon is truly invested in listening to what he is being told and you know he is trying to learn a little something from everyone he talks to.

@@eclipped That's interesting. Reminds me of a thought I had about when actors are channeling certain traits for a role, where it comes from and how different the process can be.
It seems like some actors can just imagine and embody the traits of any character like a chameleon, and there are others who give equally powerful performances but for them it seems like part of that character exists within them in some form that they can draw from. Maybe it's Bernthal's personality to be genuinely intrigued and empathetic which comes through in these interviews, and it's a skill he uses as an actor.

About half way through my deployment in 04 I got moved to gun the truck for our platoon leader after his gunner went on leave. The guy was the smartest dude I have ever met and had the foresight to understand that we were all going to be addicted to adrenaline rushes after spending so much time in life and death situations.
I remember him smacking my leg during an OP and I look down from the turret and he says something like "so I figure we are probably going to have to meet up every 3 years or so and rob some banks to get the adrenaline fixes we will need now." Hearing it I knew he was right about needing that fix, I just didn't know how often it would be needed or how long it would last. But if you want to experience shit or a kind of hell, go try and help addicts, prostitues, etc in bad neighbourhoods. The misery you will see there will change you. The good part is, you can help people without killing others....

He's right, once you have been at that level coming down is hard really hard, I came home and found myself starting arguments with people, for the dumbest things just to feel that rush, that need to fight was ingrained in me and was the reason I failed a psych evaluation and was turned down for the police, so I signed up again and went back to Afghan.
I now have days where I'm OK and can tick over like a normal person and other days I have to find "busy work" to do or I just start looking for stupid things to do that I know will get me in trouble but that risk is a buzz and can cause arguments and that increases the chances of getting into a fight.
Finding something constructive to focus on keeps me level but I will always have those days where I would go back to Iraq and or Afghanistan in a heart beat.

Like going homeless on purpose and smoking those m30s and surviving overdoses and stuff. Right before I died I finally found what I was looking for and I even said “I finally feel comfortable for the first time in my life.” Then I died right after and went blue. Then I realized the truth. Life is pain. But it is what you should seek, pain instead of comfort, because comfort will lead to even more pain than pain itself. I am now addicted to pain.

I can totally relate to what this guy says about the self-destruction.
I have poignant memories as a 9-10 year old boy, sitting in the woods, and thinking to myself…”I’m a martyr. I’m here to make mistakes because I know I’ll survive it, to show the people around me what not to do and why.”
I see it in how I parent my kids.
When I tell them no and they ask why…I don’t say, “Because I said so”, like so many billions of other kids hear.
I have a laundry list of reasons and I am honest with my kids about it, lol.
And I have awesome kids. They’re not stealing anyone’s oxygen, they’re naturally immune to woke shit, they have respect for others, and a badass sense of humor.
What he said about people who just can’t wrap their minds around how you can exist that way is spot on.
The trick is not wasting your energy trying to explain it because words will never do it justice.
And the universe is my w/e you want to call it too.
I make agreements with it based on reason and decency.
I do w/e I want when I want. I just make sure I’m not stepping on someone else’s toes when I do it. And everything always works out.
Matter of fact, 90% of the time, someone else has an epiphany from just being around it.
Awesome conversation. Sorry to get all talky but this came outta nowhere and checked all the boxes, lol.

The fact he felt disgusted at dying in the wrong place proves his warrior spirit wasn't satisfied with his death. God choose warriors to fight the necessary battles. His willingness to survive was God showing him his time is not done. We all experience God in different ways. God isn't religion, God is your gut feeling.

The whole point is to have faith and if you see him with your own eyes and don’t realize he’s working through you and other people, well isn’t that cheating? :) great comment by the way I agree fully.

I was bleeding internally during a firefight and the opposite, I really was hoping and believing God would save me. Nothing. People point out that I'm alive which must mean God saved me but I don't think so. I saved myself by throwing myself off a mountain to get closer to my guys. It's been years so I don't say it with hate in my heart. Just something I believe to be true. If God lets little kids be murdered, God definitely was going to let me die that day. I saved myself.

I mean people always talk about God being evil doing evil things and they fail to acknowledge there is also a devil out there who wants nothing but destruction who is ACTUALLY doing the things that people blame God for. This world is brutal, you obviously know this more than most. The world is the devils playhouse and not everything God wants can happen. Great perk of man choosing free will to do good or bad right? Believing in God doesn't change the world one bit, but it does change you on a personal and spiritual level. You still have to fight every day, that doesnt change if thats what you were thinking. But your foundation becomes 1000x stronger. To some, its worth it.

This hit me so hard in my soul. I’ve been a military junkie, since the end of my marriage, about a year ago. I lived in severe physical, mental and emotional abuse for years. I adapted my behavior to survive this. When the marriage ended, I chased the adrenaline, without knowing that’s what I was doing. Tell me your abused, without telling me you’re abuse, you know?!
Gong to meet guys I met on Tender, in the middle of the night, no support system, just me and Jesus, scary dangerous things for a hot blonde nurse to be doing LOL!! Thankfully I met a marine that rescued me from this, helped me to get my head on straight and realize the danger I was chasing. But THIS just opened my eyes to WHY!!!! I’m literally destroyed right now! I’m still chasing that high, but now I can do it in much safer ways. Love you guys 💔👊🏻💔.
