This felt more like a therapy session than a podcast. What an amazing episode. As a veteran I discovered allot about myself. Definitely an interview I'll watch multiple times. Like a good book, you have to read it more than once.
My sincere condolences Buck. I had a similar childhood (very poor, single mom...drugs/alcohol who died when I was 32, largely absent dad), and after the military turned me around, have lived my life as a paramedic/firefighter, and now ER RN...hero syndrome is an excellent way to describe it.
what's wrong with ''hero" mentality? why you calling it a syndrome?
@@andrabook8758 A hero mentality is a ego defense mechanism that people, particularly men, will use to elevate themselves in their own eyes and in the eyes of others. It's based on shallow things like accomplishments and experiences for the sake of making yourself look special, or heroic.
I've seen it a lot in the fire/rescue services- people with the "hero syndrome" will overtreat a victim for the sake of doing the cool skill or making themselves look heroic so others look up to them. Firefighters will take crazy risks to show themselves tough and brave....often at the expense of their team or of a victim they are trying to rescue. (These are the more extreme examples, but I've seen it a lot).
Ultimately, it's self-defeating as you can't possibly keep up with that facade you have put in front of the world, and people will generally turn to alcohol or other drugs to numb the deep wound that they keep trying to fill with accomplishment instead of just learning to love who they are.

We are all 'cripples' emotionally but we have to find our own way on the journey that we are all on.

The Holy Trinity of my upbringing was Personal Choice, Accepting Consequences of that, and Taking Responsibility for that Choice.

Love Tyler Grey. He's able to articulate a lot of things that many people can't. His observations about veterans are spot on and it connects a lot of dots in my head that I've seen over the years that even I wasn't able to draw conclusions from like he can. You can tell he's done a lot of thinking and reflecting about himself. I think all of us veterans should do the same.
The more I learn about Delta and more generally extremely high end jobs/goals, I realize it by definition requires an unbalanced compulsive to a self destructive degree person, and mission they volunteer for. They deserve all the appreciation and gratitude, but it's an exploitation of someone with no off switch. God bless them, for never experiencing contentment for benefit of rest of us.

Sorry to hear about your mom. Don't worry about what you are or are not feeling everyone grieves in different ways. With regard to what you are reading I'd suggest another George Orwell. If you haven't read it take a look at "Shooting an Elephant" it's a short story so you'll zip through it pretty quick but it's talk about expectations you have for yourself and the expectation others have for you and how the pressure between the two sometimes forces you to act in certain ways.
I can not wait for Tyler's book. Im almost 54 and have only reached a good place within the last two years. I was lost for a long time. My whole life actually. I still have no emotions, but I feel happy. My wife got a German Shepherd against my will. That Dog has changed my life. We now have two and they are my life other than my wife and children. Thank you both so much.
Dude, that was genuinely the best fucken interview/ conversation I've heard. Be comfortable with yourself and accept yourself....just shared with my son who is struggling with self esteem. Thanks for these!!!!

Awesome episode, really visceral and honest guys. I think this would help anyone who is struggling with trauma. Even if it isn't military related. It's awesome to hear that even a guy that has gotten and archived what a CAG operator has, is feeling like you and giving you tools to fight it, is just perfect. The world needs this output and this kind of information. Can't wait for the books.

Thank you guys so much for this episode. These are gold. Tylers explanation of emotion threw movie makes so much sense to me. Then Buck follows up with being told he doesnt show emotion. This hits home, then to finish it off with he lost his mother a couple weeks ago and hes back at it. Brother, my condolences. I lost my mother when I was 21 with 3 teenage brothers. I just went at it head down, no emotion. It wasn't until 12 years later after having my first child realizing I never took time off and never grieved. Please take time and allow yourself to deal with your emotions. You owe it to yourself.
I love the honesty about their feelings. All men need someone to open up to. It doesn’t make you less of a man to have those conversations.
It is nice to see and hear the top guys talking about what we all struggle with… I gave 10 year to SF in France and nearly all of us around the world think we are not enough. And that perception of other of your person also hit home. I suffer more from childhood trauma than what I indured in the military… Thank you for your testimony

I definitely need to read that book I’ve been blamed with having hero syndrome from literally everyone in my life mostly from the ones that left my life saying it was more important than they were to me so can’t wait for that release
Great interview Buck. Best I’ve seen. Majority of podcasts is just a dude stiffly asking questions to cool people who frankly deserve a better platform. You actually sit a person down and CONVERSATE with them. The casual laid back atmosphere, and the genuine, sincere talks you have with your guests really stands out on this sphere. I believe you should be the guy talking to the legends of the community on YOUR platform. So I’m here to say keep going and don’t be afraid to reach out to any/everyone to be guests on the show. Wow I haven’t enjoyed a podcast that much in a while mind you im very new to these it’s one of my self improvement steps to watch 1 or 2 a day instead of being a zombie in front of the TV. First i have to say thank you both for your service i’m so humbled by both of you Mr Grey i never miss an episode of seal team and my drive towards joining the military as a young kid was “Tour of Duty” also never missed an episode, also a huge hero to is Tim Kennedy and sheepdog, Jocko hell all of you can literally turn my worst days around. I feel like some kind of stupid crazed fan but you guys literally are one of the top reasons i’ve not given up and called it quits not to be morbid but at 42 i ran away from everything in my life and became homeless in western 🇨🇦 and eventually became an extreme fentanyl addict because it was the only thing that numbed the loneliness, i just now and with very little acceptance from family have tried to reconnect now this is 7 years after leaving i think after they made no missing persons report or any effort to find me i just grew an extreme abandonment issue which has in turn kept me from allowing anyone get close to me. But anyway i now have a job helping the homeless addicts here and have an apartment and i know these are big accomplishments and i allow myself to give myself that win but one thing and this is when you guys brought up the hero impulse we have huge issue with human trafficking here and to me there is no person more evil willing to have anything to do with that so i’m really seeing that almost as why i ended up out here going through and seeing the horrific things I’ve seen living on the streets. The most important thing I wanted to let you guys know keep doing the great work you’re doing these podcast help more men i know regain their inner strength & warrior and they start truly get inspired and i’ve personally witnessed some of what I thought were lost causes getting off the street and finding their purpose i really wish there were more mental health professionals that could relate and have one on one discussions like you cause from what i see that is one of the biggest issues here in western 🇨🇦 so again a huge thanks keep up the great work ALL OF YOU!!!! I felt it was important for you guys to lnow how truly helpful these conversations are to lost, alone & basically on the verge of suicide men from horrible childhoods, addicts and ao many that feel that there is no place or need left in this world for real, solid, tough, educated true gentlemen and its guys like you that help give them hope with your stories thanks again you guys are fantastic keep up the great work!!!!!!!

Wow...I also grew up with single parent, mom, who wasn't, ah, the best, lost myself in films of the 80s and 90s which informed my choice of going into the military. Now almost 55, and finally feeling my station in life. Buck, you are where I was 10, maybe 15 years ago. I am good, and you will be, too.

As an actor of 11+ years honing my craft, Ive been wrestling with this new nagging desire to enlist. I’ve been training hard, eating right and feeling like I would regret never taking my shot at SFAS.
This was a very timely discussion because I believe the desire stems out of feelings of worthlessness that I feel the tab can fix.

The Army is the way to go . This way.. if you don’t make it.. at least you’re an infantryman in the worlds greatest Army and get the military experience. I’m not sure if they still have 18x program but they certainly have option 40 ranger. Being a decade older than the other people is definitely an advantage. I was in the Navy first as a corpsman.. wanted to go big… but decided if I didn’t make it I definitely didn’t want to be on a ship. Went into the Army and got the experience I was looking for

Honestly, Tour of Duty with "Zeke" had a huge impact on me as a kid.
Maybe subconsciously a resume I enlisted and became a scout. I hadn't thought about it until now.
