V8 swapping an S10 in 3 Days! 400ci SBC install

  • Even though I was sick and incredibly low on energy through the whole swap, I'm proud I was able to get it done!
    While the title may be mildly misleading, if you are starting from a carbureted i4 or v6 truck the process is almost identical except for needing v8 swap mounts.
    If you started from a stock truck - the crossmember hole needs extended by about 1" and that's really it. Custom exhaust of course too.

    This is NOT a swap ,
    This is changing a engine
    The swap was the original engine for a V-8

    • @ak_strem7010
      @ak_strem7010  Год назад +12

      True yes, but I still SWAPPED engines. Damn near the same process to rip whatever garbage 4 or 6 was in there factory and put the v8 in.
      Just if you started from stock you’d have to buy motor mounts, headers, and build an exhaust, otherwise literally unbolting one and bolting in another…same process literally nothing changes if you’re going from carb to carb or EFI to carb or even putting in an EFI v8 the base truck harness is the exact same. The EFI is then a separate harness and install
      And I mean if you wanna get technical, putting an 8 in place of a 4 or 6 is ALSO “changing” and engine. Change, Swap? It’s synonymous

      @@ak_strem7010 , Swapping and changing an engine is not the same , it doesn't matter if it is NEAR the same process ,
      You changed an engine , small block for small block ,
      It may sound the same to you ,
      But that's because you must not have been a Mechanic for very long ,
      I have changed multiple engines and I have also swapped multiple engines ,
      I have Six S-10 trucks that I have Swapped 4 cylinder engines for small block 350 V-8 engines and I have also changed them ,
      I have swapped more engines than you have fingers and toes
      I have changed hundreds
      I have rebuilt hundreds
      You simply changed a small block for a small block , it doesn't matter what extra you added to it or removed from it .
      When you become an auto mechanic you will understand the difference ,
      Until then you changed engines !

    I had mine out in 2.5 hours by myself in a carport. I left the shortys hooked to the flanges, pulled the header bolts, starter, spark plugs, distributor, accessories, lower pulley, and unhooked the transmission from the crossmember, was able to pull them out together and seperate them on the ground. That looks like a lot of work to swap the motor

  • @itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852
    @itseithergonnaworkoritaint7852 Год назад +11

    With an unknown aftermarket cam and distributor setting the initial timing isn't necessarily the best way to do that. You should set the total timing to no more than 36*(most sbc 400s like 36* but make sure it doesn't spark knock there) then see where the initial timing is. If your initial is to advanced means the mechanical slots in the distributor's weights are to short and don't have enough travel and should be lengthened. If there is to little initial advance then the slots are to long and would need to be shortened by welding the slots to make them shorter.
    Get a distributor curve kit for your distributor and swap on the weakest springs so all the mechanical timing comes in at a lower RPM to make it easier to check the total timing. You are going to make the RPM increase until the timing stops going up. If you have the dial function on your timing light you can just simply turn the knob until you see zero on the harmonic damper then read where the timing is on the light and go from there.
    When you get the initial where the cam likes to idle and starts good and the total where it needs to be you can now change to stiffer springs so you max timing is all in by 3,000 RPM and you're good. You can play around with changing springs to see where you like all the timing in by. Seeing how it is a very light vehicle all the advance in by a lower RPM might be even more gooder for your combo.
    And of coarse when the mechanical advance is being set, the vacuum advance shouldn't be connected to the distributor. Setting the vacuum advance is a whole nother topic, if you're interested in that let me know and I'll write that out for you.
