9:44 "Keep in mind it's winter..." Keep in mind this is a fresh, clean A-TACS FG uniform. Once the uniform is worn and dirty it will totally kick ass. Our old ACU's sucked in the desert, but once we had been wearing them for weeks they started to blend in somewhat with our surroundings unlike new, clean ACU's that seemed to stand out in all terranes. I think I'm sold on the A-TACS pattern.
Just like the South African 83 pattern which is plain brown, it would stick out in the bush until a few weeks under the scorching sun, where it would take a more "natural" color and blend in the S-African bush
A-TACS FG usually becomes too light and low contrast when worn and faded making it look like desert tan and stick out in woodlands. I saw a Russian camo test where Multicam outperformed A-TACS FG in temperate lush grasslands, simply because A-TACS became far too light from a distance. A-TACS FG works best when its new and bright where it excels in the light green foliage in spring and summer.
Damn it... After watching all of this guys videos I've came to the conclusion that pretty much all camo works. At least at a distance if you know how to blend it. The camo is only part of the story, where you are, how far you are, how still you are, how you move, and everything else is the rest.
That pattern is very effective even with all that brown. I was surprised. It is very effective at breaking up your outline. Even when I spotted you it was not so much that I saw a person in camo so much as you looked like a bunch of vegetation that was way to green compared to everything else. Kind of like a ghillie suit that is not quite right for the environment. You can't tell it is a person but you can tell something is off.
Knowing someone is in the small frame and examining at leisure all the things that stand out is a fine exercise, but a casual glance in a 360 sweep would probably miss him most times.
Sitting looking at a screen is easy to pick someone out but when you're out there walking around haha good luck with both of the a tacs camos I recently just made an a tacs Au gillie suit
Thank you, Brent. These are really cool. I've been working my way through the videos of camouflages you've tested in both dry and green environments. I'm starting to feel like the low-key lesson you're imparting on us is to garnish one's boonie hat. Every time I spot you, it's because I spot the shadow around the band against the lighter tone of the brim and crown.
AU has been my favorite for many years now , it got kinda hard to find (for me) , I just found a sling pack in the AU and am now implementing it into EDC ! Thanks Brent
I absolutely love both A-TACS schemes. Been ordering almost any pack, pouch, holster, etc as fast as China can make them. And they're very practical for preppers. Looking at your local wild areas that have now grown back up after being de-forested 100 years ago, there's an excellent mix of live and dead foliage, which works with A-TACS year round. The whole purpose of camo is to hide or get away. These patterns will do it. Easier and cheaper to get some of this camo stuff as opposed to Realtree or Mossy Oak, but a mix of all of them can be effective as well.
Personally I don't have a bad thing to say about it. Here in Missouri it blends so well, not too dark not too light. It looks natural. Very effective, but then again its how you utilize it. Great video!
ATACS FG remains effective. I had to rewatch this to reaffirm how effictive it really is. We move so fast with innovation, like with the newer iX pattern, but this still works.
I think that it works, really well. We already knew to be looking for you. Otherwise...not being on the look out, I don't think you'd be seen. Thank You for taking the time to make the video. Very informative.
I am very surprised how well this camo does in this environment. Especially after watching Part 2 I think this is possibly the most effective and adaptable camo pattern you've tested.
I spotted you quickly in some of these. Every time, it was because part of you was in the darker shadows and part of you was in the direct sunlight. It created too much contrast. The colors were surprisingly good, despite that. Based on this video, I found it highly effective. Those are conditions similar to the fall hunting season here in north Idaho. I had a similar experience in the mountains of central New Mexico with this pattern in early June. I was kinda surprised how well it worked in an area where AU would have been a far better choice than FG. Good video.
I really loved the A-TACS FG for quite some time, and still enjoy it. I have been hooked on the Kryptek patterns for the past year, and was originally in to the Mandrake specifically. But, I have to say I think the Highlander has really taken me in so far. I am one of those guys who adapts his camo to the situation, but I think Highlander is the new Multicam. Another great video!
I think its so awesome that the A-TACS looks almost like the camo that was used in Star Wars on the forest moon of Endore. I have got to get serious about getting this camo on board for my AO! Thanks and keep these vids coming.
Solid video. It's clearly no ghillie suit, but the pattern does a great job blending. I picked up an atacs au ball cap and bdu pants for general bushcraft purposes. I searched high and low for the Remington 597 in atacs but couldnt find it. So I settled for the OD green. Awesome video.
I saw your video on the AU and think it outperformed the FG this time of year in Texas. I think the AU tends to look more like shadows especially at distances. Your vids were exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for your time and service.
Awesome !!! I'm glad I decided to go ATACS with all my gear. I can't wait to see how well it performs in a greener environment, considering how effective it was at this time of year.
I love A-tacs FG. Thanks for taking the time to do these videos Brent. Great job. I found that you initially blended well, but the crouch throws too much shadow, and kills the effectiveness of the camo. I would like to see you walk over that ground again in a normal upright position, or a side shot, moving from one side of the area to the other, to show the camo working better. Once again, thanks for doing these videos.
This is Jayhoc's favorite cammo pattern. I wasn't sold on it yet, but it does very well, even in that dryer environment. If you ever get a chance, you should do it again in late spring. Great job again, Brent. Thanks for the demo.
Also I wanted to thank you for serving I was in JROTC all for years of high school. I really wanted to join the army but my high functioning autism and poor score on the asvab kept me out.
Staying still and in the shade, then you are hard to find ! And moving and looking like a person, easier to spot ! A Molle Vest or any Molle just stick in anything to break up the outline... Thank you for the green back ground and a Great Video ! tjl
A really good set of videos - well done. I'm not looking to get into a "this camo is better than that camo" argument with anyone - not at all; I'm only giving my opinion here. The vast majority of most woodland/temperate/green camouflage patterns are just way too dark. I've not only witnessed this myself many times, but had someone from the military who's a camouflage expert tell me this (just can't remember when/where). In fact I've mentioned this a number of times to different people and comments sections. Having said that, ATACS FG has made a sincere, serious effort to get away from using colours that are too dark, and this is an enormous plus - bigtime. But where I feel it tends to be a bit lacking is in it's serious lack of any fine, small, contrasting elements (i.e. micropattern elements). I tend to think it's just a tad too similar to a faded khaki green/olive drab uniform. If there were some small, fine contrasting pattern shapes thrown in, then it would help a great deal. It doesn't need to look like TigerStripe or MarPat, but I find it just a tad too soft and blurred.
+Brent0331 Most welcome. I am hugely impressed with the way that ATACS FG has gotten right away from the typical dark tones of most Woodland/Jungle patterns; for years this has been a serious problem with the vast majority of Woodland patterns. If ATACS threw in some small, fine, pattern elements....then it would be superb. Some time ago I read some comments by a military and camouflage expert that pointed out two things: - It's always much better to choose slightly lighter patterns than slightly darker patterns. - Most Woodland/Jungle patterns contain too much green....*when you're looking for a woodland pattern that you can wear year 'round. i.e. Multi-seasonal*. You definitely need green, but not be totally saturated with it. There was a fair bit of detail explaining these points too, but I'll be damned if I can remember when/where I read these comments.
+Brent0331 Another major issue is people don't spend anywhere *near* enough time paying attention to whatever gear they may be carrying. e.g.: Gun Pack Waist gear Headgear Straps etc. Some people do, but most don't. Any straight/square objects in solid colours stand out like a sore thumb, where so much can be done to fix this. If all the items that people wore and carried were painted in a decent broken pattern, this makes it so much more difficult for them to be spotted.
Thanks Brent...I'm a new subscriber and I have a large collection of Camo myself. I enjoy your videos compareing the effectiveness as I have been studying this for many years. Cheers! Glen
So I live in west colorado. There are lots of vast coyote brown desert spots; and large tall dark green forests with minimal ground vegetation. Keep in mind It also snows. If you lived here and you could only pack 2 different camo pattern / solid colored pants, 2 different lighter shirts, and 1 heavy jacket, what would each be. Keep in mind this is all I can pack so I'll be have to be creative with combining different patterns and colors. I thought about getting full out multicam everything which would be good for being in the woods and snow, but that will be a disadvantage in urban or desert environments
I was able to poke him out in every spot he was at but the difference between looking at a video and looking in rea life is quite vast. In this video you're limited to the frame that he's hiding in, with a wider FOV than what you would get in real life. I noticed something else as well, as he got closer to the camera the camouflage appeared more and more green, where as you could hardly tell while he was far away from the camera. Pretty neat.
Great pattern for that transitional period. The colors seemed to blend perfectly, but there were times it didn't matter. I wonder if you'll fade even better once there's more green out. Great vid, man!
I love the FG pattern. I use it down here in Florida in all seasons. It passes well enough in the bright green of spring, mainly by being light enough to avoid the "black blob" effect that Tiger Stripe can have at times. (Look at the thumbnail of your Tiger Stripe vid for an example.) It really shines in summer though, in my opinion. The hot sun dries out the stick grass that's so prevalent here, and causes most of the vegetation to turn predominantly brown, with bits of green mixed in. Additionally, much of our swampland is made up of cabbage palms and palmettos, both of which drop large fronts that then dry out and turn brown as well. If you have similar conditions in Texas, I strongly recommend you give it a try.
So far I’ve been pretty impressed with the performance of the ATACs patterns, I find the AU pattern extremely effective in the fall/winter here in North Texas and I look forward to testing the FG pattern in the spring.
saw the second vid first and must say that even without a heavily vegetaded situation it performs extremely well if not better...in the shadows it almost makes you invisible with the dark colour of the trees and mud for example the 445 mark in vid 2. i believe it was when you were against the bank. would love to see a vid with the same area but without hiding behind any cover. This must be a very expensive pattern.
This stuff works awesome even in this season. Bet it'll work even better in spring. And idk of youve done it already. But you should totally do different types of ghille suits. Would be awesome.
***** yea I agree... you got all the best stuff there is basically. Any better then the stuff you have ya might as well make a ghillie suit..keep it up sir. You have the best vids like this on RUclips hands down.
this looks like it might be kinda perfect in florida. Will have to see how it does in the real green greens. More surprised how well it does in the browns
In some parts of this video the ATACS FG stood out more. I bet the AU would've worked a little better here. But come spring the FG should work fantastically. I own a pair of Propper ATACS FG and I love the more organic look of the camouflage as opposed to other camos.
Thank you for doing these videos they are very informative. If you get the chance I would recommend trying the French version of woodland I think its called CE not really sure. But to my understanding its great in eastern woodland during summer and early fall and supposedly more effective than our woodland.
I don’t currently have any CE, if it ever becomes widely available on the surplus market I’ll pick some up. I’m not going to pay top dollar for it though, it looks too much like regular U.S. Woodland for me to spend a lot of money getting a full set in it.
people were hating on the UCP video but that was filmed in spring/summer and I personally think that the UCP pattern would do better in conditions presented here. Could you possibly do UCP in these environments?
Just for your information, and I understand that camouflage isn't an end all to being detected, but...I was able to pause the video and within less than 15 seconds was able to identify almost everyone of your positions. Granted, I'm well trained in spotting anomalies in the terrain, but so you know, the anomalies were there.
What’s your point? I have no invested interest in these patterns, I’m simply putting them on and setting up somewhere in the picture so that you can see how the pattern looks when is this particular environment. Of course you are going to see me, these uniforms are not ghillie suits, and for the purposes of demonstrating how this pattern looks in this environment I cannot add artificial vegetation to my utilities to help break up my outline.
I definitely want to see the spring/summer video but it seemed to me there was kind of a "sore thumb" thing going on. I felt like I could spot you right away on most of the shots. It could be just me learning your concealment patterns though but for now I think AU is more effective. Especially as a base layer..... I really like your channel so far though.....
AU would have been a better choice for about half of the video I think. It just seems like the AU diffuses light better if you wind up finding yourself almost half exposed in mixed lighting, unless you are in deep jungle or woods, and the browns in AU, match dirt and tree trunks, and let's be honest, in that kind of environment, that is actually what we would hug like our Grandma for cover and support, and hide behind like our Grandma.
Another awesome video, I was wondering what's you're opinion on urban camouflage? Do you think it's effective? And if so would you ever consider making a video for it? The Canadian military recent developed an urban camo called Cuepat, it's designed to work in all of Canada's major cities both indoors and outdoors. I have seen the pattern and it looks really cool and it seems to be very effective, have you heard of it. Also back in the late 90's the marine Corp briefly experimented with a T-shaped urban Camouflage I forget what it's called but maybe you have heard of it as well.
As far as urban environments are concerned man, civilian clothing is your best bet. I think most “urban” patterns are actually designed for law enforcement and have intimidation in mind more than actual concealment. If you were in an environment that lets say is isolated and desolate like a WWII Stalingrad type scenario, I’ve seen our scout snipers in the Marine Corps take current issue snow parkas and high light them slightly with black spray paint. They wore them while sitting in a hide that was located inside a building in a MOUT town on Camp Pendleton.
Very impressive I had to stop it at 6:19 cuz I can only see you one out of four times the camouflage definitely light pop out when you move in front of tan and the dark pop out when you moved from something dark like a long or a dark muddy Bank I just ordered a backpack and a poncho in this color combination and you can give Frodo a run for his money with that suit
Just got my hands on some unsold stock, A-Tacs have stopped doing this pattern and replaced it with something similar but more digital. Long live Endor-Cam.
Hello hello friend. I have a question. Would this work well. In a temperate rainforest. Lots of Green. But also browns on the ground. But no brown on leaves. Most trees are covered in ivy or moss so they are green to. Would this blend in with all the greens. And brown ground? During fall?
Have a "brown boot" vs. "black boot" question. Which boot color, brown or black, works better with all the camoflage patterns you have demonstrated? Every branch of the American military had black boots for any type of tactical uniform during my service time. Now everybody has a brown boot. Foot gear has been changing from black to brown to black to brown to black to brown since the American Revolution. Which works best?
The coyote boots we wear now are excellent. No polishing and you don't have to worry about them shinning in the field. But nothing looks better in garrison then spit shinned black boots, no question about that.
Thanks man. I kind of like to leave my opinion out of the camouflage pattern videos, and see what others think about it. I give my opinions when it comes to the individual military skill set videos I do.
im in Michigan (thumb area) mix of lowlands, trees, greens, browns and such. what would you recommend for this are as a all around set? im debating on multicam, au and fg but eh thats alot of cash to shell out for 3 patterns.
I think I'm starting to understand a drawback to this pattern that scorpion(ocp)/multicam doesn't have. The a tacs fg would very obviously allow the wearer to blend into a similar color environment. The problem is, the gradual bluring of the colors together that the a tacs employs is a bit more prone to make a mono-color blob out of you, does not employ the outline-breakup design, and as a result, could fail to break up your shape/fail to create the illusion that your limb could be a tree root/dirt with a patch of grass on it. A tacs FG is a good pattern for blending in. What bothers me is that if the shade is slightly off, the wearer's outline is too apparent in the environment due to the mono-color effect.
I just bought a boonie hat in this because I love the look of the pattern. I thought it was fairly effective in this environment. Thanks so much for doing it.
What is your preference for spring/summer (in the woods/grasslands) camo pattern? I think the military's WOODLAND is the best, but that is my opinion. It is not my favorite pattern, but you can't argue with success. I just acquired some A-TACS FG and I love the color pattern. How does it compare with WOODLAND? My altime favorite is the WWII German Oak-B pattern, but I have not tried it or seen it for effectiveness. What do you think is the most effective camo for spring/summer? -Ex-ARMY Medic and civilian RN in the ER
You can’t go wrong with woodland, the patterns service length and the amount of countries that adopted it as their primary pattern for their military over the years speaks volumes for it. I like the tiger stripe patterns but they definitely do not have the versatility that the woodland pattern has. I concur about the German WWII patterns, they were well ahead of their time and are very effective.
i spotted all of them except for the scene at 9:10 Camo effectiveness relies on location big time. getting under brush is your best bet. this is why minimal movement is the best.
well brent my brother, did you wash away ? how did you fare with all the rain ? i bet the creek is running like hell ! are we ever gonna get any more gear effectiveness vids ?
Kerry Ward Hey man, I've been gone recently at 29 Palms for some training with the Marine Corps. The rain destroyed my shoot house that you might have seen in some of my videos. I'll have to rebuild it. Furthermore, the area in which I film these effectiveness videos has been pretty flooded as well. I do have some effectiveness videos lined up in the future though. I have French CCE, and two Chinese patterns that I'm just waiting on the time to get out and film them.
OH NO BRENT, not the shoot house ! guess that will keep you busy for a while. 29 palmes and warines huh ? you training them or they training you ? stay safe and i cant wait to see the new vids !
I have a question for you. I currently live in Flagstaff, Arizona as a college student and I was wondering what camouflage pattern would work out in the forest up there.

Keep in mind this is all I can pack so I'll be have to be creative with combining different patterns and colors. I thought about getting full out multicam everything which would be good for being in the woods and snow, but that will be a disadvantage in urban or desert environments
This and Multicam are on my top list of camos, they're both amazing!
I'm sure it will be even better in the spring.
FG is awesome in the NV desert. Stand, walk, sit, laying down, very few have seen me.
Wow it works surprisingly well for fall. The one problem I have with it is that it doesn't have enough brown. It's more green and tan
I love the FG pattern. I use it down here in Florida in all seasons. It passes well enough in the bright green of spring, mainly by being light enough to avoid the "black blob" effect that Tiger Stripe can have at times. (Look at the thumbnail of your Tiger Stripe vid for an example.)
It really shines in summer though, in my opinion.
And I'll look forward to seeing the results of your tests.
I like the FG & AU they also work well together with FG as base (trousers&top) with AU chestrig/vest/webbing to give a better all round camo.
Nicely done! And, just a stellar pattern!
I really like that pattern and it looks to be pretty effective.
Wear this pattern myself for airsoft, actually impressed how well it works. Even in winter. :)
Do you find that camo makes a difference in airsoft? I am researching the topic.
Exactly the same for me
@@zacksvoboda6050 I find it can do, it depends on your environment and camouflage you use.
saw the second vid first and must say that even without a heavily vegetaded situation it performs extremely well if not better...in the shadows it almost makes you invisible with the dark colour of the trees and mud for example the 445 mark in vid 2. i believe it was when you were against the bank. would love to see a vid with the same area but without hiding behind any cover. This must be a very expensive pattern.
stuparris Its fairly priced. Its not cheap, but its not as expensive as the latest multicam patterns and Kryptek stuff.
I love this camo, wery good job Brent, and thanks for this video 👍👍👍
This stuff works awesome even in this season. Bet it'll work even better in spring. And idk of youve done it already. But you should totally do different types of ghille suits. Would be awesome.
Excellet Videos. Can't decide if ATACS or Multicam is better. I like being different so I might go ATACS
Plus do you or can you do a video on boots?
Thats really not my area of expertise.
Planlos Channel me too
Great pattern to work with and to blend into the environment.
I would love to have this during a early spring late fall setting...
Its a good pattern. One of my top choices for spring and summer time.
I'd like to see some of the Kryptek patterns
Mandrake and Highlander would seem to blend pretty well
They're too expensive, I'd rather put that money towards guns and ammo.
***** yea I agree... you got all the best stuff there is basically. Any better then the stuff you have ya might as well make a ghillie suit..keep it up sir. You have the best vids like this on RUclips hands down.
I own a set of this camo and it work wonderfully. I recommend it
I’ve used the AU for a couple years in the fall/winter and have love it. This will be my first spring with it, so I look forward to it.
A-TACS is my preferred pattern personally. There's a couple I was way wrong on which is cool!
this looks like it might be kinda perfect in florida.
I think that it works really well. Kinda reminds me of old German WW2 pattern.
I wonder how effective it is in other environments say Australian woodland & forest areas.
About the only video i've had really hard time seeing a person. That was pretty insane.
Thanks for the videos and your service, Sir.
Thanks for watching.
people were hating on the UCP video but that was filmed in spring/summer and I personally think that the UCP pattern would do better in conditions presented here. Could you possibly do UCP in these environments?
+Andrey Kot I'm planning on do one in the winter with it.
Of course you are going to see me, these uniforms are not ghillie suits, and for the purposes of demonstrating how this pattern looks in this environment I cannot add artificial vegetation to my utilities to help break up my outline.
if it took you that long you wouldnt last long....
I think the AU version might be the best all around (browns and tans) seem the best to me.
Thanks, I’ll probably be filming it pretty soon here.
Sup man!!! Cheers! LOL! I agree with you that the AU would have been a better choice here.
I start to love atacs camouflage
Its a very smooth camo ment to replace the digital pattern for a new more natural look. It works best in spring
Yeah, I’m thinking the same. I have high hopes for it so we’ll see.
I am an ATACS fan. Yes Multicam rocks to...
Just got a set for airsoft and here in NW Florida it should work well.
Would this stuff work well in the lushness of Florida? I might buy this because it is a bit cheaper than multicam.
Yes, A-TACS FG is a great pattern for a green/brown environment.
But nothing looks better in garrison then spit shinned black boots, no question about that.
squared away! love your stuff keep up the good work brother! Would like to see some AAR to get your opinions on the camos you test. Thanks
Thanks man. I kind of like to leave my opinion out of the camouflage pattern videos, and see what others think about it. I give my opinions when it comes to the individual military skill set videos I do.
Great video. I liked it.
im in Michigan (thumb area) mix of lowlands, trees, greens, browns and such. what would you recommend for this are as a all around set? im debating on multicam, au and fg but eh thats alot of cash to shell out for 3 patterns.
***** Glad I could help
Great review.
Thanks
That camouflage does look like from return of the Jedi didn’t know that
Will A-TACS FG go well with OD Green?
Pirate_of_Oakland Yes
Not good in the dead areas, but really good in the grass.
I concur about the German WWII patterns, they were well ahead of their time and are very effective.
nice video, love the opening brother
i spotted all of them except for the scene at 9:10
Camo effectiveness relies on location big time. getting under brush is your best bet. this is why minimal movement is the best.
well brent my brother, did you wash away ? how did you fare with all the rain ? i bet the creek is running like hell ! are we ever gonna get any more gear effectiveness vids ?
If you had some hessian strips to break up and lighten your head shape you would have been almost unseeable, great stuff.
Can you do hunting patterns too!
Pick soft colour. Like soft tan or weak brown. More blend rather than wood pattern.
Every camo is hard to see in 720p
@Brent0331 do you think this pattern and the tan be effective in ukraine?
Absolutely
I have a question for you. I currently live in Flagstaff, Arizona as a college student and I was wondering what camouflage pattern would work out in the forest up there.
I'm not sure brother, check out my different video and see what pattern best matches your area.
Awesome vid! Could you do a Kryptek review sometime?
+ADTR216 I've never found Kryptek cheap anywhere. Eventually I will i'm sure. In the mean time you can watch this guys videos on it: ruclips.net/video/RrkGKWkG7Ds/видео.html
what's your opinion on Kymtrek....I am not a huge fan of it but I hear some are in love with it.
Do you think a OD green plate carrier will look good on top of the a-tacs fg
CallsignMoonMan Yes, an OD plate carrier would compliment ATACS FG quite nicely.
***** thanks
Lots of people hate on Atacs. Not sure why, my AU is great.
