    Back in the late 80's I grew up on a lake in northern Idaho. Pretty much all that was available in camouflage pretty much was the 50's style blotch, or woodland. One night a buddy and I dressed up in woodland camouflage, painted up or faces and went exploring along the shores of the lake. It was in the summer and on a weekend, all the cabins and homes along the lake were packed full of people. We wanted to see what was going on, and watch the random acts of stupidity people do when intoxicated. My buddy thought it would be a good idea to raid a refrigerator that was outside on a deck of this cabin. The occupants were have a camp fire on the beach. As my buddy was helping himself to their inventory of alcoholic beverages as I pulled overwatch on his mission. One of the occupants walked over to replace is now empty bottle of beer. My buddy had gone into a bush and curled up in a fetal position. The occupant was baffled by how much booze was gone. After a brief shout out to the rest of his crew on the levels of their consumptions. He proceeded to urinate on the bush. This bush which held my buddy was about 6 feet from the cabin, and was only about five feet in diameter. I thought for sure he would of been spotted. After the occupant left, my buddy came back to our observation post, soaked in urine. It was hard keeping quite at his misfortune. I told him he stinks and we are swimming back to wash him off. Since that day, I still feel woodland is the best for mountainous terrain.

    I’m old enough to have been issued M81 for most of my time in the army. It’s very effective. So much so that my M1A1 tank was painted woodland and could disappear in a wood line at 200 yards. That being said sitting still is the most important thing. If you have hunted animals or men you will realize both the predators and the preys eyes are most sensitive to movement.

    • @cs-rj8ru
      @cs-rj8ru 3 года назад +10

      When your M1A1 was painted in Woodland, was it a much larger scaled pattern? It might sound irrelevant, but when you scale up Woodland it become more of a "breakup" pattern than actual camouflage.

      Yeah you're right about being still. Hunters have traditionally worn flannel for centuries, and it works perfectly in the woods when you're not moving. Hell, even the British military learned very quickly during the Revolution and French and Indian Wars that even a bold red uniform makes for wonderful camouflage when hunkered down in the bushes. You can test this and it will blow your mind that you didn't see the bright red at all until they moved. It probably is because of the close relation red and green have with the way your eyes perceive color, and explains why all woodland patterns use some kind of red/brown/tawny. It's not just that it blends in with the woody materials in the woods, but the foliage as well because of the way our eyes work.

      One of the best yeah^^ but the best? Maybe for that environment. ;-)
      Always depends in which environment you are... in dark german forests for example, woodland is a bit too bright and green but flecktarn fits perfectly.
      Then, wearing flecktarn in a brighter forest which is not that dense sucks because it just doesn't fit into that specific environment. ;-)
      This is why I don't believe in "All terrain camos"... there is a specific camo for its specific environment... but no camo for every environment. =)

    You know what would be real interesting, is doing another M81 test with faded fatigues. I heard the M81 camo was specifically designed to be printed overly dark and saturated, because they knew after heavy use in the field it will fade into a lighter color palette.
    I put a pair of faded surplus M81 pants next to some MultiCam gear and was very surprised at how closely it resembled MC's color palette. It was practically just MC with larger patterns.

    Woodland is really good for 2d camo. Once again we see that shadowing from the abdomen and shins overrides much of the camo pattern.
    Of the five Ss of camouflage, I tend to spot them in this order: shadow, silhouette, shape, shine, spacing. Shadow gets you shot first, and shadow reinforces silhouette.

    The camouflage seems to work best when there is wilted grass, brunches, trunks and less green vegetation. In the first part of video the camouflage was too dark to effectively blend in with various plants. Woodland works fine in the northern Europe especially fir-woods, where it is darker. Leaf forests are too bright for it, while pine forests are normally too open to effectively conceal oneself using such a patter.

I've used Woodland for a long time and still I am amazed at how well it works. Many of the "new" patterns really don't seem to work well at all or are very specific to areas and time of year. I know that in some places MultiCam is getting a lot of love, but in Florida woodland works very well for most of the time. Unless you're against really sparse, bare, tan dead stuff in the winter, you'll blend in - and lush green material is usually nearby.
    That being said, MultiCam works in the winter, and olive drab can be better in the summer because the darkness in woodland can stand out in bright, lush foliage.

    I have to say that Woodland and Multi-Cam are the best camo patterns out there. Multi-Cam is damn good, especially for lighter colored areas. Maybe you should do one on the old OD green uniforms. They have them in the ACU style uniforms in OD green. I've got a pair. I think they do well. Would love to see them in this perspective.

    I just stumbled across this channel today and it's great. Thanks for your hard work! Great info here I'm recommending it to my 3per buddies
    I was ruckin through my forest just a couple hours ago and decided to stop for a break. Wearing some surplus bdu woodland. I was sitting on my ass just inside a tree line and 3 young deer grazed on by me about 7 yrds away and they didn't see me. Woodland works very well here in rural southern Ontario

    It always amazes me how really effective good ole M81 woodland camo is. This is what we used when I was in the Army. But……we would all keep the new uniforms for garrison. The old faded almost worn out ones would be used in the field. And even though the labels very clearly said do not starch, we starched the hell out of them. The really faded ones we called snow camo…. So we tended to stand out almost as bad as ACU when out in the field.

    In this video the BDU did a fantastic job due to probably the darker environment due to the season. However like the other video by spray painting a very light brown to give it that sun faded look in my opinion would improve its effectiveness. I think if the military shrunk the black splotches and added maybe another brown color this uniform would be able to almost compete against multi cam.

    This woodland camouflage is much better than the coyote brown you wore in a video I watched last night. I don't understand why our military replaced the woodland camouflage with the MARPAT during the mid 2000s. I would like to see a side-by-side comparison of woodland with the new Operational Camouflage Pattern in service with the U.S. Army today.

    Woodland shows its effectiveness once again! All around great pattern for an affordable price. Thanks again, man, for showing us all of these camos - it's a hobby that takes time, money, and dedication. With winter starting here in northern Indiana and probably coming soon to you guys, it comes to mind that you've only tried one snow pattern so far. I hope to see some more snow camo tests and/or other camo tests in a snowy environment from you!

      Ryan W The problem is brother is that it hardly ever snows where I am. Pretty much the planets have to align in order for me to be able to film in the snow. The flip side to that is because it doesn't snow that much, I really don't want to invest money into snow patterns that I'll never or rarely use.

      Makes sense - we get buried up here. I have an odd idea for an effectiveness test, although it may be applicable to a lot of operators. How well does the classic Urban camouflage work in an urban environment? I know this one might be a pain to test, but maybe find a parking lot behind a department store with fields or woods adjacent and maneuver through equipment, around storage crates, even among cars or trucks.

Light weight and very durable. I ETS in '05 so I never had the pleasure of wearing the ACU's...thank God lol. I like some of the A-Tac patterns. I even have a couple of sets of A-Tac cami's...but The old school Woodland BDU is still king when it comes to true camoflauge in a wooded and jungle enviorment.

    I think woodland works because of the high contrast, sharp and large blobs. All other camos using micropatterns, grandients or depth based perception have lost some of the capacity that woodland had to break up shapes, specially at longer ranges. I might reconsider going back to woodland, right now I own several patterns and I dropped everything woodland, but long ago when I used it I think I could conceal better.

    First of all, I'd like to say thank you for a lot of great content! I'm quite new to your channel, but so far I must admit I am impressed. Just a suggestion though: Kneeling or going prone behind shrubbery or trees doesn't really show the effectiveness of the camouflage itself, it shows how good you are at hiding. Kneeling or going prone IN FRONT of said vegetation (in plain view) would better demonstrate the effectiveness of the camouflage itself, instead of the skills of the wearer.

    The downfall of woodland Camo is the black, blackness in nature almost never occurs. Even your shadow is not black, your shadow on green grass would be just darker green. Look at the deciduous forest and you can actually see alot of not only bright green, but yellow. Also leaves are shiny they reflect light, so when you hear of camo being "too dark" its because it eats too much light. You can see here when it is very overcast, the woodland works great because the leaves are not reflecting much light and shining, making the woodland camo look like a dark blob.

      That was their reasoning for adopting the crappy UCP and we saw how well that worked. I guess that's why tigers have black stripes or a panther blends so well with his natural habitat, or a leopard has black spots, etc, etc.

    • @goryspirit

We actually had the opportunity to wear some of the old ERDL (green dominant) stuff on a deployment a lifetime ago, and that stuff was absolutely awesome considering the environment we were in. Still have one of the shirt/jackets. Keep up the good work, love your vids, you remind me of my "old" first sergeant sometimes. Hey Brett, first off I'd like to say I've seen nearly all of your videos and I enjoy your channel a lot; and I thank you for your years of service. So I've got a few questions for you: I noticed in Lone Survivor, Don Shipley's SEAL Expierence courses, pictures of real SEALs, even at BUDS they wear either Woodland or 3-desert camo. Meanwhile other branches have made very complex camo's over the years while SEALs stay with these two. Now I hear both the Army and Marines will be adopting multicam very soon. Who do you think is doing it right? Also: I live in West Colorado, climate and landscape are nearly identical to Afghanistan: mainly mountainous desert all year with patches of vegetation here and there with the occasional forests and nearly 100% chance of snow each winter. Very tricky to make myself an all around kit for any type of disaster in which I need to leave town. I've decided for all my gear (backpack, chest rig, pouches, weapons, etc) will be coyote tan regardless of my clothing decision. I started buying multicam clothes at first, but I noticed it was too dark contrasting in the desert, and too bright in the dead Forrest; should I keep buying multicam or should I start buying and mixing woodland and 3 desert?

    • @Brent0331
      @Brent0331  10 лет назад

      RAGGARADEthirst As far as I know when you're talking about units like the SEALs or S/F, those units can wear what ever uniform they what. I think the pictures/video you're watching of SEALs dressed in older utilities in theater are mainly older pictures/video back before the Navy came out with its own digital patterns. I know the SEALs for instance have a Desert digital pattern that they wear now that is very similar to what we wear in the Marine Corps. By the way, I'm not sure where you heard this but the Marine Corps has no plans on switching to MultiCam or any other pattern for that matter. I am a Marine and I have not heard anything about us changing. If anything I think we have the right idea in having two separate patterns. Although, I do see the utility and flexibility in having a pattern like MultiCam. As far as Woodlan and 3 color desert, they're both tried an true patterns, and just because they have been replaced does not make them ineffective.

    • @RAGGARADEthirst
      @RAGGARADEthirst 10 лет назад

      ***** I know SEALs and SF aren't generally issued anything, but I was mainly referring to Lone Survivor; I didn't realize Operation Red Wing occurred just a few months before Marines were issued MARPAT. Even still BUDs trainees to this day wear Woodland, and veteran SEAL Don Shipley still wears 3 Des and Woodland as well as his classmates. The question I really wanted to boil down to, is the Military adapting; or do SEALs know better? On the Multicam topic: I saw about a dozen Marines in a comment section on Instagram talking about how they were changing to Multi along with the Army, I wish I could have gotten a link of some sort for it.
