I’ve never harvested on the island because of how confusing and dangerous it seemed. Thanks for breaking it down I feel much more confident in planning a trip out now
For sure, not trying to sound like a broken record but that's why people have to check. Your taking a serious gamble otherwise and it's not worth the risk imo. With that said, if you follow all the rules a nice feast awaits! Clams are delicious. Same with oysters, and mussels! Happy you liked it! I enjoy making the educational stuff. Cheers!
@@PNWSamson no broken record that's forsure. Fantastic to know the reality/dangers and then the empowering part where you arm us with tools, skills, and knowledge. I am a forager for wild plant food (roots, corms, bulbs, mushrooms, plants, nuts, flowers, berries, medicines, medicinal mushrooms or fungi). I am even learning how to extract leather from a mushroom that grows on Birch..... Without being aware of the dangers, I would be in trouble. So thank you for your education, we all need more of it..... When I get to the ocean, I'll be loving to see what you have taught me. Blessings to you and your family.
@@PNWSamson My brother and I are getting into an oyster lease on the Westcoast. And after we send in our samples for biotic inspection and we get 3 clean samples, then the DFO opens the whole area for shellfish, or most species. It’s brutal. Costs us 250$ a sample! Then they just open it to everyone after we spend the money to verify our lease is clean…
Happy to man. I avoided bivalves for the longest time as the regs were daunting. They are a great source of food and are rather sustainable compared to other marine species.
Yeah man pretty atrocious! Makes the 6:08 days that much sweeter though haha. Happy you liked it! Not sure how popular a topic bivalve harvesting is but at least it's out there to help some people going forward. Literally nothing on RUclips from what I could find!
If you subscribe to the Fisheries Notices then you'll get an email whenever the zone regs change, I highly recommend it, I have seen it change up to 4 times in a week, sometimes it changes more than once in a single day. You can specify which zones to be notified about. It was the best thing I did to ensure safety. You also get other notices such as Whale info, etc.

p.s. Sooo Argonaut Wharf, Camp Rvr for the win to swim with cray-cray big octopuses/octopi?! haha That recent 10 footer though in the news sounds like a nightmare for freedivers!!
Haha no pressure. If you watch my videos awesome but don't feel guilty if you don't. Regardless, I appreciate the comments and you stopped by! And to be honest, I'd love to see a 10' octopus. That's my dream for that matter! That would be amazing. A little frightening but amazing! Happy you had a good summer!
Yep! That sounds right. You'll still need to know your sub area and the sanitary closures within each sub area. Knowing which area you are in is the first step.
@@lukejolley8354 sanitary closures are usually around industry, marinas and waste water treatment plants. I likely wouldn't be harvesting in proximity to them even if they were testing. But yes, the DFO err on the side of safety. There are still many open areas outside of the lower mainland.

VERY thorough! I know something like this is no small task to pull together. Thank you for the public service Chris!!
You were my inspiration man! No joke. You're the O.G bivalve master of the PNW lol. Hope to get clamming with you one day and see how it's done!
Big Responsibilities. RESPECT
Cheers, happy to share some info.

Awesome, that was my goal! If you follow the rules and best practices it's safe as can be. It's when people go out blind when bad things happen.
Oh dear that's scary. Great education. I think your fantastic at this.

great info. I use this app called "can you dig it" it updates each day and is pretty good for the smaller closures
Good to know I'll check it out! Thanks!
Great information and we'll done on the edit. This is the stuff the community needs. 👏
Cheers Mark! No room for making mistakes with bivalves. Scary stuff for sure.
Thanks Chris for all the informaton in the video ..
No sweat man!
Great edit really well done. I enjoy bi-valves like oysters and also agree that they don't make it easy to decipher the regs you do a great job.
Thanks man. Yeah, it can be tricky. The DFO should have some online videos to help us visual learners out.

Thanks! Haha not sure. Something I could add to my resume though I suppose!
so my air bnd was in a mamino area so i think i went to area 17
Yep! That sounds right. You'll still need to know your sub area and the sanitary closures within each sub area. Knowing which area you are in is the first step.
Most sanitary closures are nonsense. They stay in place forever because dfo doesn’t have the budget to test everything.
