Great vid Nick! My kids and I have decided on 1st trip to Barview this year were going to harvest the barnacle's and now we will add the sea snails and limpits!
Aaron, if it's your first trip, please be careful, especially with kids. The rocks are EXTREMELY slippery, and falling can truly be catastrophic. Also, whatever size the swell that day, some random waves can be MUCH bigger, and getting swept off the rocks would also be a nightmare. But that said, the jetty ... um ... rocks!
@@xyzct appreciate the warning Nick thank you. No not 1st time we've done Barview jetty many times to fish but I will take heed of your warning as it is precarious as we all know.
Butter and garlic is my go-to! It would have been delicious with these but i wanted to try them plain so i knew what they actually taste like without additional flavor. I look forward to trying these different ways. I'm glad i finally got to try these
The limpets take literally 30 seconds to cook. Over cooked limpets are rubbery and not too good to eat. Cooked right, it taste and texture is like squid. The snails are real good. I eat everything but the back half. Dipped it in a little flavored fish sauce with ginger and they’re gold.
The limpets, try tenderizing the with a steak hammer (not to much) , welkes with white pepper and vinegar, mussels steamed in white wine and garlic, with a butter garnish, your mussels are a lot bigger than the UK ones, but the limpets are a lot smaller
I will definitely give those a try. For the first time trying the limpets and whelks i wanted to try them plain so i knew exactly what they tasted like without additional flavor. I look forward to trying some recipes next time... Thanks for the info!
Hey man. This is a great little video you put out here and again thank you. really enjoy your commentary and humble productions. Just keep making these and throwing them up! Great stuff! Deluxe!!
If fishing was bad we would go get get limpet and muscles and snails and hermit crabs and cook them all together into some melted butter with some garlic .Oh yea so good! When I couldn’t find any good forgeable stuff we’d just poke pull for eels and almost always get those. It’s crazy how much food you can find with a little effort along the rocks like that.
It’s nice having options that’s for sure! Melted butter and garlic is so simple but so delicious. I will have to try this poke pulling for eels, never done it before, sounds fun.
@@AnglingAddictsPNW yea bro it’s super fun, if you go down and start by the corner by the jetty store on the rocks and you could use an old broom handle or something and hammer a nail through a swivel on the end of the pole and then just use like a #2 hook with some squid on it. Don’t need more than a few inches of leader off the end. Poke in all the holes along the waterline all the way out until the tidal pool area. I haven’t had as much luck for them out on the jetty. 👍🤘
I will definitely be adding some flavor next time. Being that this was the first time I tried them, I wanted to know exactly how they taste on their own. I look forward to the next time! Thanks for the tip
You're missing out on the flavors of the guts of the snails. I like the challenge of getting the whole thing out and dunking in a bowl of chili vinegar mix sauce.
Do it! it's all about getting out there and exploring more areas.. just an fyi, the jetty, as most, is hit or miss..... but always fun if you know there are other things around still.. this was fun to do and a nice break from fishing.
Nice job nick!!! Another fun video to watch. I have also been wanting to try those as well but didn’t know if all snails were edible. It’s so hard to find limpits big enough to eat on the oregon coast. But I think based off your reaction I probably won’t try those now. I love mussels but I only harvest ones no larger than my thumb and that’s because I don’t mind eating guts and all when they are that size. Thanks for your hard work pumping out awesome videos.
Thank you 🙏 I appreciate the support. It was fun to get out and try something new again. I always just come across a random big limpet or two, maybe it’s the area. Apparently they are good raw as well, so I MAY have to try it that way. I was surprised that the snails were so tasty. I definitely enjoy small mussels for that same reason, plus less work in prep, but I will eat any of them lol. Hopefully I can keep pumping out the videos, it definitely keeps me busy, but I’m also running a business so it’s a constant juggling act 😆 thanks again for the support
@@AnglingAddictsPNW It really is fun getting out there and harvesting your own food from the earth, and it’s free food. I have watched other youtubers eat those and even clams raw but I have always been too scared to do it because I don’t want to get sick. I like eating sushi but I guess I just don’t have the confidence to take something out of the ocean and eat it raw. I need to be with somebody showing/encouraging me to do it. I also own a small business that I do part-time plus work at another job full-time plus I have my kids with me 2-3 days every week so I completely understand being busy. I really appreciate the hard work you are putting into your videos especially with the catch-n-cooks you have been putting out lately, which are my favorite.
Thank you, this was a lot of fun. I’m so glad I decided to try all these things I’ve been interested in. Sea urchin is the next on my list of new things to try. I agree on the 4K, makes a big difference!

Love your catch and cooks! If you're up for a good challenge this speed catch and cook might be right up you alley. The question is: can you beat the time?? @
I’ve been so busy making and selling spinners that I’ve only had a few hours on the water so far this season. The river I pass to get to the coast wasn’t looking good unfortunately. Most Oregonians are fishing in Washington this season lol. I’m gonna try to hit it pretty hard before we start to see springers around
I have yet to see any BIG ones around the west coast. I wonder if they just don't get that big or if it's the areas that i have been. I'm always looking
Which location is that? I like to day drive to Oceanside. Lost boy beach/Maxwell point tunnel. There's so many good places. Old vintage photos of people standing with a horse and buggy on that Hug Point sand stone area you can walk on. I can't believe people used it as a road.
99% of the time i use butter, so i wanted to do something a little different. These were pretty tasty and i'm definitely looking forward to trying them different ways... Thanks!
@@AnglingAddictsPNW, whew, I made the right decision. (I was sweating that day, wondering if I passed up two 38" ling ;-) Redtail fishing was so ... relaxing. You're just standing in the small surf. No lost gear. No seaweed. No massive current changes. No slippery rocks to die on. Almost no one on the beach. It's just so peaceful. I caught a few, and took home two to eat. So it was really fun. I love perch fishing! Don't get me wrong -- I LOVE fishing at the jetty. But this was a nice change. I haven't fished for redtail for eons because the surf hasn't been below 10'-20' for a long time. I usually use an Okuma Celilo medium-light action steelhead rod for perch, which works great. I'm wondering if I should get a light action version too.
Anytime! It has been fun trying new things, especially since all of these things are at my feet when I’m fishing, never really thought I’d actually be eating them
I think I will this year. I never really thought about doing videos on them before but I think they will fit right in. We DO have some tasty mushrooms around here!
Can someone help me find regulations on Limpets and Whelks? I cannot find them anywhere within the website of my states (Washington) fishing department shellfish regulations. I can’t even find them in unclassified species. Does this mean its unlawful to collect any? I just want to know since there are so many gigantic whelks nearby along with massive limpets, and my Korean grandparents want to try the. but they can’t find regulations anywhere.
I’ve spent about 4hrs total on the water so far this season. If I’m not chasing chrome it means im busy making spinners so others can. It’s a trade off I’m ok with. I may try to power fish the rest of the month though lol
