This is really neat to watch half a decade later when fighting games are coming up with all kinds of smooth onboarding systems to get new players into the mix. It's crazy to think that Tekken 7 or SmashU released with nothing more than a few loading screen tips and no directions at all. One great quote I heard from Harada (Tekken dev) about their doing so was that they were afraid that revealing too much of the game's complexity in something like a tutorial would scare away newcomers, but we also know that the Smash team hates the idea of encouraging the game be played competitively in any way, and that they woul be limited in how much they could actually do with a tutorial because they themselves don't fully understand the nuances of the game they've created.
“Bertie Fathoms Hardwood” should be the name of Luke’s next album/project. Also, I really hope we’re getting official OX “PREM TUSH” merch next year...
Followed by her running around in a spider costume with extra legs haphazardly attached, ineffectually jumping after flies like a cat and shouting "web!"

My best memory of this year has to be meeting all you amazing guys at EGX and getting to see Showdown Of The Week, absolutely loved it and cannot wait for next time, love you guys so much, thank you for being the best people on RUclips by a country mile 😊😊😊
you guys just made great overall tutorial, A is punchy-punchy, B is character specific nonsense and then there is jumping, aerial recovery, blocking, grab and directional throws, edge grabbing and the percentage that is not your healthbar!
Also you have to watch the colours around your user icon because they show what combination of button and stick circle has a damage boost based on the number of explosions happening on the screen at a time, but the damage boost takes a while to recharge, indicated by the varying length of your dust trails as you move unless someone's hit you with the debuff that makes your dust trail fixed length, which also reverses those colours to confuse you but you can tell when that's happened because the sequence changes, and there's this thing you can carry which is just like a single dot on your character which makes you do more damage to the right or to the left depending which way you were moving when you picked it up, but it also makes you take more damage from the other direction, so you can sometimes exploit that and sometimes you have to get rid of it by pressing A and B together as you jump through a cloud to leave it there where someone else'll pick it up and if they don't notice they've got it you can get them from the weak side but also you have to watch out for the slow zone spells that move across the screen left-to-right or right-to-left depending on which combination of characters are in-play and how many times each one's been defeated, and when someone's using a lightning move if you ... Wait. Why am I even explaining this? Everybody already knows all this. If they didn't, the game would have a tutorial.

Smash is all about movement. If you can recover at high percentage, dance in and out of your opponent's range, and use your attacks as movement options, you'll be able to beat the majority of casual players. Luke was torturing everyone during the livestream simply because he knew how to move around and nobody knew how to catch him. Andy may have "won", but Luke got all the points, and it's because his movement was head and shoulders above everyone else.
YAY! Torture the new and casual players! Make sure nobody who hadn't spent 2000 hours in the previous iterations of the game before this one came out ever gets to have any fun in it or last long enough in a match to figure out any of what they're doing! Whoooo! Gate-keep! Gate-keep! Gate-keep!

I was thoroughly impressed by Luke's anagrams. They all made a decent amount of sense and a couple even fit into the theme of the game. Well done Professor Luke!
At 5:05 you can come from street fighter if you play Ryu or KJen because as well as the normal smash controls, those characters work with the quarter circles and directional inputs etc. from Street Fighter.
Ellen's reaction to the comment of them not going to cook that commenter's Christmas dinner is perfect. So cute but so sad. SEND ELLEN HUGS!!!!!!! *hugs*
Having been an owner of the original SSB on the N64, I've known how to play the game for forever. And I've always found the way to introduce people is by having someone who knows the game explain the basic concepts (A is normal attacks, B is special moves, etc) and then have any other better players kind of just leave them alone for at least a few games while they figure it out. And then having the better players be good enough to answer questions, like with the smash ball. The fact that the sticks have to be static and some final smashes are close range some transform you, etc. The learning curve is steep so far as being familiar with the ins and outs of all of the characters. But ultimately smash is a party game. Learning it without someone to guide you through the introduction sounds like a terrible experience, even if it had good tutorials, the game has always been structured more like a jump in and play type of game. Granted I do recognize not everyone had or has siblings/roommates to play with regularly. Which is how I learned the game. But that is really the ideal way to play. Sitting on a couch, yelling at each other. It's always had a solo part but that's for sharpening skills and unlocking things not learning the basics.
Sheer rage at the injustice visited upon her these last few years and Andy’s clearly biased opinion on Ellen’s Pikachu flowed through her body that temporarily allowed her to take on Spider like abilities! Unfortunately it takes years of rejection rage to build up properly!
I haven't finished the video yet, but regarding the first 7 minutes, where they talk about tutorials... If you open the sidebar on the main menu, there's a button in the lower right corner that says "Help." Clicking on that brings up a very detailed manual that explains pretty much everything in the game, both basic stuff and advanced techniques (that are too advanced for me to use because my reaction speed is too low, so I basically just button mash instead). So there _are_ instructions for how to play, and they're not particularly hidden either.
Thanks for talking about the lack of accessibility in smash, i was kind of thinking of getting it, but now i'll definitely wait until they patch in a tutorial or something, especially since i have no fighting game background.
I forgot today was my birthday, I'm watching this a few days late. Anyway, I'm super stressed at work and this was the perfect detressor for the end of today; thank you both for a great birthday show. Y'all are awesome, though Pikachu is definitely the best smash character. Link is good too I suppose... Side note Ellen's sweater is amazing, Luke where is your T-rex?
Same, and I have to be up in an hour for work... Might as well pull an all nighter and watch last years outside Xtra Xmas challenge to prepare for this year!
Luke: we've been talking about this too long Ellen: we can never talk about it for too long Luke! I can't believe you would say that. Atleast Ellen saved us from the blasphemy
Ellen's adventure with smash bros is basically like mine. I didn't grow up with nintendo besides pokemon on the gameboy. So I feel like there is this whole mini generation like us getting into it now! Its gonna be good!
Loved your content all year, always so good and great knowledge of the games of 2018 and also, great smash bros skills, proof that Luke is a smash master and Ellen will learn so much from the master. Have a great Festive period Ellen and Luke, see you in 2019.
the directional buttons deciding what moves you use has been a thing for a lot of games, and my favourite ps2 fighting game... a game that also had literally no tutorial. D': I understand the pain of no tutorial in fighting games. But yeah, the directional buttons deciding the move is actually really useful and pretty much the best way to set up a game, especially in a multilayer, multiplayer game, it just takes forever to get used to it.
I agree with Ellen's game of the year, I got it for my birthday and it is the best super hero game I have ever played except it's a bit short However red dead redemption, in my opinion, is the best if you want an immersive experience (though I do think god of war is an easy second or third place in my opinion) Anyone agree?
@@theenigma2861 Game of the year has nothing to do with Category though. That's why they have other categories like "Best RPG" and "Best action game". Game of the year goes to the best executed game of the entire year. I do agree that in terms of an open world narrative and narrative gameplay, RDR2 absolutely nailed it. No open world game in the history of gaming has achieved a level of depth that RDR2 has, but this isn't about one awesome thing the game does well. Game of the year has to take into account games all genres and in that light, GOW definitely deserves the win.
I’m literally the same Ellen, at EGX I went up on stage to play smash and I got given a GameCube controller (which I’ve never used EVER) and I just pressed random buttons and hoped I didn’t jump off the edge
Anyone wanting to pick this game up, check out a youtube channel called Izaw. That dude is a high level player and he made what basically should be the actual tutorial. Seriously I was more or less in Ellen's position back in smash 4 but I found Izaw and now I play and love the game regularly
For Xmas this year, you guys should have a Katamari Damacy, on the Switch, challenge!! I love... and hate this game, but it’d be awesome to watch you guys give it a go!
2:14 - *“And I'm gonna learn how to smash.”* Hello and welcome to lesson 1 of “How to get quoted out of context.” Yes, yes, I know. I'll see myself out.
Luke, what if Samus Aran is actually adult Princess Zelda who exhausted all her magic trying to find Link/Doom guy. She caught a glimpse of his Doom Guy armour and wrongly assumed he's in space. Hence she embarked on an 'Doom'ed quest to reunite with him. Destined to wander the Galaxy forever, never knowing she's searching in the wrong place........
Whilst online games certainly don't use as much *bandwidth* as things like streaming movies, they are very sensitive to *latency* and as a result any packet loss as well. If you add in a contended local (within a house) connection, especially if you're using WiFi and it can easily be painful.
Also, that slideshow implies that this game ties the game 'tick' to the network traffic, which is a major no-no. Of course the alternative is rubberbanding and warping, so pick your poison....
Ellen at the beginning of the video.... Look I'm "falling" can't you see me.... I'm "falling". Didn't you see me "falling" Basically that's how I was when I started learning to die in my first major production on stage
Ellen, if you are good at Marth, try Lucina (when you unlocked her, of course), she is Marth's echo fighter, and she is basically Marth without needing to do proper spacing for the strongest attacks-_^
Watching this, I just realized that people don't know the controls to Smash Bros. I've been playing this the N64 game so obviously the controls come naturally. Thinking in my head since only a few buttons are even needed to play I think the controls are simple until I really think about it. You can do D-pad+A or D-pad+B, but you can also use the left joystick+A/B, but then you can also just use the Right joystick to use the direction+A attack without needing to press A, but it doesn't work with the B attacks.

Ellen's face when Luke gets all the weapons in Showdown of the dungeon is priceless! She is so mad
Thanks for talking about the lack of accessibility in smash, i was kind of thinking of getting it, but now i'll definitely wait until they patch in a tutorial or something, especially since i have no fighting game background.
So, Spider-Man isn't real but Ellen is on the wall...there is only one explanation. I think Ellen might be possessed!
I'm guessing Jane might have something to do with that.
32:30 Dark Luke legitimately scares me but I love it
I forgot today was my birthday, I'm watching this a few days late.
Yeet, it's 3 AM and I'm watching this. The things we do for the channels we love.
Same, and I have to be up in an hour for work... Might as well pull an all nighter and watch last years outside Xtra Xmas challenge to prepare for this year!
Happy holidays and a happy new year to you too!
Best channel to find a new video from when you can’t sleep
Smash bros's tutorial:
SB: GO!
Player: AHH Pikachu noooo
Luke: we've been talking about this too long
Ellen: we can never talk about it for too long
Luke!
So, Luke gets to experience the ending to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid every time he plays online! That is so awesome!
Loved your content all year, always so good and great knowledge of the games of 2018 and also, great smash bros skills, proof that Luke is a smash master and Ellen will learn so much from the master. Have a great Festive period Ellen and Luke, see you in 2019.
Jon's laugh-wheeze is golden
I had no idea what happened in Ellen and Luke's playthrough of Showdown of the Dungeon, because I was just so mesmerised by Dob's bouncy hair-do! XD
I was absolutely amazed how quickly Ellen got all of those little word puzzles. And I’m amazed that I got the only one she didn’t.
Ellen’s jealously at DOB’s item pulls on his first turn is hilarious
Ellen was already good at Smash. Now she knows what she is doing Ellen will dominate.
This is what I needed right now!
the directional buttons deciding what moves you use has been a thing for a lot of games, and my favourite ps2 fighting game... a game that also had literally no tutorial. D': I understand the pain of no tutorial in fighting games.
But yeah, the directional buttons deciding the move is actually really useful and pretty much the best way to set up a game, especially in a multilayer, multiplayer game, it just takes forever to get used to it.
Merry Christmas Ellen and Luke. Looking forward to 2019 already.
I agree with Ellen's game of the year, I got it for my birthday and it is the best super hero game I have ever played except it's a bit short
However red dead redemption, in my opinion, is the best if you want an immersive experience (though I do think god of war is an easy second or third place in my opinion)
Anyone agree?
I mean...yeah, Spider-Man, although a great game, doesn’t hold a candle.
God of War is my game of the year and it absolutely deserved that award.
@@raymondv.m4230 that depends on what type of game you like because all three are variously different
On Ellen's turn Luke did a real Dob thing with those doors. Ellen's face palm says it all
I love it. The game is working exactly as intended.
I love the first two clips for game of the year are PS4 exclusives but your sister channel is outside xbox
Dob, the crates, you want to open the crates :'( !
11:47 when you know they *love* you & won't make take it easy on you... *at* *all*
Where's the British etiquette?! "Are you okay?" "No" "Cup of tea?" There's nothing a hot cup of leaf water can't fix.....except maybe bones....
You guys are awesome, i had problem today and thank for make this video it cheer me up in this problem thank you
Luke: We're gonna make so many videos, you'll be begging us to stop!
Me: NEVEEEEERRRRRR!!!!!!!!
Anyone wanting to pick this game up, check out a youtube channel called Izaw. That dude is a high level player and he made what basically should be the actual tutorial.
Seriously I was more or less in Ellen's position back in smash 4 but I found Izaw and now I play and love the game regularly
Happy Holiday and cheers to a wonderful new year!
For Xmas this year, you guys should have a Katamari Damacy, on the Switch, challenge!! I love... and hate this game, but it’d be awesome to watch you guys give it a go!
2:14 - *“And I'm gonna learn how to smash.”*
Hello and welcome to lesson 1 of “How to get quoted out of context.”
Yes, yes, I know. I'll see myself out.
The Luigi horrors would work better if it wasnt for Andy’s Luigi doing the Worm with a flower in his hat
Marry Christmas and a happy new year 🎊
11:30 One of us! One of us! One of us! One of ... well, you get the idea.
Ellen's reaction to SotTR was the best bit of this video :-P
Whilst online games certainly don't use as much *bandwidth* as things like streaming movies, they are very sensitive to *latency* and as a result any packet loss as well. If you add in a contended local (within a house) connection, especially if you're using WiFi and it can easily be painful.
Also, that slideshow implies that this game ties the game 'tick' to the network traffic, which is a major no-no. Of course the alternative is rubberbanding and warping, so pick your poison....
Ellen at the beginning of the video.... Look I'm "falling" can't you see me.... I'm "falling". Didn't you see me "falling"
Basically that's how I was when I started learning to die in my first major production on stage
Ellen, if you are good at Marth, try Lucina (when you unlocked her, of course), she is Marth's echo fighter, and she is basically Marth without needing to do proper spacing for the strongest attacks-_^
I come back to this video once a week for "Hornet Trundles Worm"
Most fighting games when I was a lad had no tutorials! I had to figure that mess out! (Mortal Combat, Virtual Fighter, Street Fighter)
