- Safety First!,,, educate yourself before setting up your first electrolysis cleaning tank,,, do your homework, read all the information available on this subject, watch all the videos,,, this is not something you want to be guessing at,,,, it can be hazardous,,, when done correctly you will end up with a very clean, unrusted item, I have tried baking soda, rebar, coke, stainless steel (do not use stainless steel?, look it up), vinegar, molasses, apple cider, and that swimming pool stuff, the list goes on,,,, I find this setup works best for me as I need to derust small to medium size gas engine parts on a daily basies, also works great on an old cast iron skillet, bring it down to bare metal for re seasoning,, leave a comment, subscribe, pass it on,,
I have used electrolysis a lot and it really does work well.
.
I restored a 1948 John Deere B and even used this process on the
main framework . I used a large plastic barrel and could only do half
of the frame at one time and then put the other end in the barrel. It
took a little time and effort, but it was well worth it ! It came out great !
Thanks , Shopdog, enjoyed the video .
I have been using your method for over a year now and all I can say is a huge thank you! The time it saves me and the excellent job it does is worth it's weight in gold to me. Thanks again Shopdogsam, I really look forward to your videos!!!
Great video with very clear instructions and examples to help understand how to use this technique of cleaning rust! Thanks so very much!
That was great! Thanks Sam for the info trip and for taking the time to explain the set up. By the way, I watched your gravy video and made it for my this morning with some biscuits. Smiles all around! Thanks from Cincinnati. - Jeremy
I bought some carbon as you described, but I also bought some carbon gouging rods which will need to have the copper coatings removed, but that is an easy process. At about 14" long, they can work well in different types of buckets and not be as large as the block types of carbon. A good tub to consider is those fairly cheap cement mixing bins they sell at all box stores as Lowe's or Home Depot. They are for larger pieces, but the depth is only about 6-7" on them. I am anxious to try out your method and I greatly appreciate the information you provided in the video. Years back I used a kiddie pool to use as an electrolysis tank when I did a full fender of my '42 Chevy Business Coupe. Unfortunately for me, one of the sharp edges burst through that pool and the electrolyte mixture went everywhere. Cheap plastic is not the answer, but the mixing bins are made of a stronger plastic. Thanks for the video. ;-)
Thanks for showing all the details and giving us this delightful video!
Many thanks from Sweden!
Great idea, well explained, as always. Thanks for your efforts.
real good video Sam, couldn't be easier after that class gonna set up one myself.. Thanks again
He done clean dem dere metals yall
Thank's for the very informative Video We got it all stored in my Mind I a gonna give it a whirl !!! I have some old rusted tools to restore
Great video, Sam. This will come in handy for cleaning up my cast iron cookware.
Thanks...I’m learning a lot from you ...👍👍👍 Much appreciated ...
my thoughts exactly and not only that but i get into engine parts here and there too!!
Thank's Sam, I really hoped you'd make a video about your electrolysis tank!
,,, yes good gravy and a hot biscuit,,, so good you gotta smile,, thanks
Great stuff I got some homework now. Thank you shopdogsam. I needed that.
I absolutely love this accent. So cool.
Same accent my grandparents had. Sadly my dad moved to PA so he never developed it. It brings back memories.
Great video, Sam. Very useful to me. Thank you very much.
,,, from here on the east coast of Arkansas,,, thanks
Very usefull indeed i use it alot when im working on a engine or somethin that just needs some de rustin
did it for me time to do my homework on the stuff thanks
McMaster-Carr also has graphite plates. And rods. But, like shopdogsam says, it's probably much cheaper on eBay.
I love your "gooda olde" southern accent
GREAT VIDEO SHOPDOG. THANKS
Thank you :) I have a bunch of old rusty tools from my dad I want to clean. How do I stop the rust from coming back?
,,,, no,, I just add water,, it's not like your changing the water, just replacing the part that has evaporated,, I have added a little washing soda a couple of times, but in hind sight I don't think it was needed,, as the dirtier the water gets the better it works,,,
haha a free hired hand! Great video dog thanks!
Dangerous stuff is Chromium VI.... er... Hexavalent Chromium aka Hexachrome produced from certain types of electrolysis. Aussie50 has a video on this. Hexavalent Chromium is a rust preventative. Also see the movie Erin Brockvitch.
Where do you buy your graphite?
I need to make a tank and I really appreciate this video.
Graphite is 100% carbon. It's not going to have a little carbon, it's all carbon. Minus a few negligible impurities.
He is probably referring to carbon black being mixed with the graphite. Yes they are both made of !00% carbon but different structure.
TheKajunkat I'm not sure why any reputable seller of carbon products would include carbon black in a graphite product. Especially a graphite plate being used in electrolysis. Carbon black is usually found in powdered and liquid forms. It's used mainly as a dye. I think one of the reasons to use graphite is because it's conductive. Loose carbon atoms are not conductive. They must be structured to conduct.
So much better than Phosphoric acid--
So ya start with 5 gallons of water and a 1/2 box of soda. Then ya said ya may need to add maybe up to a gallon of water per day to keep er topped up. Do ya add more soda each time ya top er up considering that after a week or so most all the original water has been changed out or does the original soda remain a solid suspended but not diminished through evaporation?
so true when were snoozing its a working
Where do you get the graphite? Graphite is at least $10 per lb. Honestly, steel might be a better option. Sure, it doesn't look as pretty, but you can get scrap iron and steel for free anywhere.
your very .... rural isn't yall
,,, this is so simple,, no need to over think it,, shopdogsam
sweet vid dog!! im making one of these!! for sure
Great video :) Questions though if I may;
1. The powder to use is "Sodium Carbonate"?, doesn't have to be washing powder/soda, but as long as active ingredient(?) or containing "Sodium Carbonate?? What about "Sodium BiCarbonate"?
2. Positive connector from Charger connects to electrode, Negative connects to parts that needs to be cleaned, would that mean the part to be cleaned becomes negatively charged & electrode positively charged ? I though Positive attracts to negative? or the rust particles become Negatively charged & becomes attracted to the positively charged electrodes (opposites attract)? Sorry, little confused, could someone clarify?
3. I have a 12v/4amp charger, whats the maximum capacity (Litres) of liquid solution I can use before the power output from the charger becomes too weak to successfully charge the parts & transfer rust ?
4. What happens if the Negative part touches positive charged electrode?
5. How do you dispose of the rust/water solution ?
Thanks, & sorry for all the questions. :)
1. just use exactly what he has.
2. electrons flow from negative (cathode) to positive (anode). hopefully they wont be attracted to one another through electromagnetism and short out your power source.
3. i used a 40 amp 12 volt power supply from a motor-home and it is plenty : ) . there are 200 amp battery charger/starters if you think your setup is insufficient.
4. (see answer for question #2) .
5. it should be ok to evaporate the solution into the atmosphere and then toss the rest in the trash can.
Would this process remove heavy rust from a blued gun barrel without removing the bluing?
can you put copper or brass or aluminum that is attatched to steel parts in the
rust removal method that you use in this video
,,, and trying something new, will tell you about it later,,
would you think if you soaked the parts in baking soda and water after the electrolysis is completed to neutralize the acid in order to stop the parts from rusting again only a thought...
+PUNTANG BANDIT ,,,, it's only washing soda,, no acid,,,,
,,, you can find it on ebay, look for the scrap pieces,,,
seams to work well
,,, I will talk about it in an upcoming video,,
Good day, great video !
How long does your water solution (with sodium carbonate) can last, before being to used; so you must throw it away and refill with fresh water (with sodium carbonate) ? Thank you.
+Richard Fortin ,,,I think one time it was one year or more,, just added water every couple of days,, new video about this coming up in a few days,,,,,,
Sam, I have a frame of an old pump I cant remove the babbit from. Will it be eaten away? Can I cover it with tape before hand and protect it?
,,, thanks, shopdogsam
,,, good for them el-cheapo rusty garage sale tools,, a day or so in the electrolysis tank, take 'em out,,, wire brush 'em,,, oil 'em up and you got a usable tool,, thanks
Hi Sam.. Loved your video on rust removal. Prior to watching your video, I setup a tank and cleaned the rust off an old shotgun. You mentioned something about hydrogen embrittlement in your video and now I am concerned. I used a steel tank, washing soda (1 tbl per gal water) and a 12 volt battery charger running somewhere above 6 amps. The meter was pegged. I used a fan to keep the charger cool and it was cool to the touch ( the actual transformer ). Anyway I left the barrel in for 19 hours and it did the job quite nicely. But, after watching your video, I'm now concerned about this hydrogen embrittlement. What are your experiences with it? Am I still good to go? or did I screw it up? Thanks
you can do a "bake out" to remove the hydrogen. Put it in an oven at @300F for a couple of hours and all excess hydrogen will be removed.
@@TheKajunkat baking soda? washing soda solution? part after treatment?
Thanks
No bake it in an oven. The temperature is high enough to allow the hydrogen to move out of the steel but low enough that it won't affect any tempering present from a prior heat treatment
,,, yes, a bandsaw works great,,
YA'LL COME BACK NOW!!
Does this remove mill scale from metal too, or only rust?
Sorry Sam but that wasnt rust on that part, that was a rusty coloured stain.
sam, have you ever removed rust from inside of a hopper on a hit-n-miss engine by using the hopper as the tank, negative wire hooked to it, then simply put a annode on the positive rebar and dip it inside the hopper ???
I have an old 1982 honda xr250r and the cylinder has rust in it, could i do this to make the engine run again?
So in your experience does electrolysis damage engine Babbits?
In my case poured babbits in a Ford Model A engine block.
,,,,, yes,,,,
would aluminum flashing around the sides of the tank work?
,,,, doves, you got to love them doves, I have about six or seven that come by every day for a hand full of cracked corn,,
Will you please tell me where you buy the graphite?
hello sir i want to repeat thé electolysis in ivory..i can not fond thé carbone si f l want to know the manufacture of carbone. Thann you in advance and l would like to have a suite because it was my message is urgent
i'll try that on a old cast iron pot first..lol
I seen in mr pete's video where he used a couple of soup cans for anodes. I want to try this. I have some gears that have some rust onto them, but I don't know if they are bad enough to do this with. What's the least rustiest thing you'd put in there Shopdogsam? Okay edit here, I went out in the shed and both my spare spindles are mighty rusty. I'd like to clean them and paint them. so in case I need one I won't have to put a rusty one on my car.
,,, yes, but I do not use rebar,, for a clean tank, use graphite,,
shopdogsam kk
,,, the good part is, it is working when i'm not,,,
are these tracker parts?
Will zinc plates like yôu get at marine shops work or mild steel plates. Not sure where to buy carbon or grog ute but mild steel is easy. Thanks in advance
,,,, hit replay,,, graphite,, check my playlist,,
,,, I have no idea,,,
Can you cut that thar graphite?
Will it remove small patches of paint also?
+Shane K ,,, most of the time,,, or at least soften for easy remove,,,,
Graphite is PURE carbon... Who told you that you could have a graphite plate with low carbon?
I have got to make me one of these tanks! What a fine job it does... :o]
O,,,
I think the Mrs is going to get upset if you use her wedding ring as an anode.
,,,, and, why?,, would you make that statement,,,,
,,, iron oxide, rust only,,
This guys is not wearing safety gloves..... He did nt do his homework ha, ha! :) Good video though!!!!
,,, cheap,, and you don't have sandblasting sand on everything for a mile around,,,
,,, yes, but in straight line,,,
Line of sight????? More like negative to positive. Sight has nothin' to do witit!
oil
,,,,, ?
wax
thats cheatin
oil....
and keep moisture off it
you are what?
third?
