Working on rebuilding my sportster decided I wanted to make it a old school work of art I can't tell you how thankful I am for this video along with the candy paint video I plan on doing something similar with two shades of red and a gold flake base thanks for the inspiration
Spraying silver base helps with giving the substrate that 100% coverage look..... Spray mini flake 1st to give the succeeding flakes to embed and melt into to help lat down instead of standing up, then spray Jumbo flakes, then spray mini flake again to fill the gaps...... This process helps the flake lay smoother for less flow coating & color sanding later......
Watched all your videos over and over. Im gonna try a wild emerald green candy paint job on my Harley. I’m sure the flat black will look great when I’m finished...
So using Black as a base makes the flake pop more? The look after clear is nice, can you sand and do some candy colors over then clear I've been thinking of giving it a try but want to have a plan

Hey,, Adam, another great video! Very good pointing out the importance of the drying time between coats on clear. I use Sherwin Williams products mostly and they have changed to wet-on-wet application for every line of products they have, from the regular to the high solids clears. I first didn’t believe it that i should apply the first coat followed by the second coat within one and a half minutes for a helmet i was working on! Due to my disbelief, I ran into serious fisheye problems and had to adhere to the manufacturers guidelines what solved my issues. While watching your painting the tank in your booth, it came to my mind another thing i do to make things easier, I hang a clean bag with some metal/liquid from the lower end of the part I’m painting so it is not necessary to hold it not to turn by itself. The weight keeps it stable and won’t be swirling while i try applying the product. Hope it is something it can help you too. I have a question though. I’ve noticed you tape the gas tank up to the gas lid while i was taught to leave a 1/4” below the seal for it to work properly, why do you do the way you do? Thanks again! Edson
If you weren't going to do any tape outs and were just going with single candy color over the flake. Could you let the clear flash then hit it with a few coats of candy without sanding, let that flash then hit it with a final coat of clear? Love the content man!
Hey, hello there amazing jobs that u have done. They are insane. I’m about to start one of your projects on my bike. But I got one question. In the prime face, where u wrote “2-3 coats” that means that I have to prime it one time, leave it drive primer again, dry last for the last time OR in the first time I have to prime giving 3 circles around the tank!?. Thanks you for ur time.
If I were to metal flake a project then leave for the day would I have to key the metal flake before applying the next clear coat if so 600 grit ? Awesome as always 🤘
Best tutorials Ive seen so far. Do you use the same spray gun for the metal flake that you did for the primer and base coat, or are you using a second gun with the 1.8 tip? Thanks!
During this video I used a 1.8 spray gun size for the flake. 1.4 for clear and primer. I currently testing a flake that spray through a 1.4 by LiME LiNE that will be available in the next few weeks.
Hi dude, great video! I’m going to be painting a helmet forming friend. It’s going to be mainly white with white flake and a yellow band around it. Was wanting to ask if I’d be better painting the whole helmet with white flake first then do the band on top. Or paint the yellow and tape up the band and do the white flake at the very end. Thanks Dave
BigdaveSupercharged thanks, sounds pretty easy.. you definitely want to start with the flake first. That way your paint edge is not so thick. I have a video coming out towards the end of the week that will show how you paint graphics on flake. 👌
After primer how long do you wait to paint it black. And then after you shoot the metal flakes. And Then how long after that to clear it? After clear how long to start airbrushing and then final clear? Looks like you did it all in one day.
About to paint my bike a dark midnight blue. Wanted to use metal flake. Would it look okay over the blue or should you always use black as a base? Thanks in advance and love the videos man. Have already learnt so much from just a couple videos.
I appreciate this video for sure. But after years of flaking I found a great way. I use the closest base coat colour to my flake, when applying flake I use base coat binder and then clear coat. I find you don’t get the gaps left where flake hadn’t covered.
Ya I use to do that. The sparkle Gets a little dulled out doing that way in my opinion. Something about using a black base intensifies the shininess of the metal flake. Don’t ask me why 🤷it just does.
Great video, I have a couple questions, don’t you have to spray sealer before the base coat? Question to say my base coat is a ruby red how what the final product come out with ruby red metal flake?
I hope that I am not a pain but why go from blocking the guide coat to the da sander. I assume with 600 grit? What is better da or block. I am doing my first tank. I am at the por 15 tank inside seal. and tank imperfections (dents) are being puttied and sanded.
The da sander is faster. The hard block helps smooth out imperfections better than a da sander because it cuts the the primer flatter. The da pad is not as ridged so it tends to follow the original contour of the part.
You mentioned sprinkling the metal flakes directly over wet clear coat, I don't have a compressor or spray gun so I was going to try this method, do you have any tips for getting an even coating of metal flake done this way?
Your tutorials are great, I messaged you on it a few months back, I’ve been trying the flake out and have had a lot of issues with really bad orange peel after spraying the clear, then I’ll have to sand it all out and shoot clear again. Are these issues that you’ve encountered during the process?
So whenever spraying flake will the clear always come out textured and orange peeled due to the flake, or is there a way I could spray the clear and have it lay down smooth as glass over the flake without having to do a ton of sanding?
God dang man you are extremely talented!! Can I please ask, which size flake d you use? In Australia.0.008 is most common but spent seen coarse enough like what you use. Also is silver flake best over black as it contrasts?

Sorab Jain it depends on the brand of clear, temperatures where you’re spraying, how heavy of coats your spraying. Touch the clear on the tape or inconspicuous spot with your finger if it’s tacky you’re good for another coat if it strings up when you pull off your finger you need to wait longer.
So will any color go over this flake coat and the flakes will show through? Say I wanted to do black or white flake. I just spray the silver flake coat and then go over that with the black or white?

@@TimeWarpCustomPaint Would a similar effect be achievable with rattle cans?
