Back in the 70's and 80's when we were spraying metal flake, we used to ground the car by placing a metal chain on the back axle running to a ground. Doing this you get rid of static electricity which makes the flakes lay flat and not stand up, so you don't need to nib them later and possibly damage them. We also used to put a couple of clean ball bearings in the paint cup which helps keeps the flakes on the move in the cup as you are moving while spraying.
Thanks for the tips. I like the grounding technique, I'll have to give that a try next time. The agitating cup is also essential luxury if you are doing flake.
True flakster story.. also spraying flake during the night time is better too. All rules is out the window with flake jobs. You can mix up many products
Load of tripe a car Is grounded anyway🤣 if you've recently sanded plastics then run some water or a tack rag over it. Ball bearings in a cup stops flow so just quit it man
The way we do it is to do all the flake work then blow the whole car off so any lose flake falls off then bury it in clear. We don’t do the kandy work until it’s perfectly smooth. Also I know there’s better painters out there then me but I strive for every job to be better then the last as long as your learning and growing as a painter then that’s all people should focus on.
@John Thomas Is this what you do to feel superior? Go around on RUclips and correct people’s grammar. I can tell you that in this line of work having “perfect” grammar doesn’t get you paid more or more respect.
I'm a year behind watching. We're about the same age and I feel the same about just being a better person. In our industry people are down right mean. Doesn't matter how good you are. Keep your head up and keep that same mentality. Misery loves company!
Killer job. I agree stay away from those negative people they are just miserable and sad ppl trying to put you down. I agree 110% with what you said about not wasting your time with negative ppl. Keep the great work and content.
I did a small flake job at home in my detacted garage 2 months ago, im still finding a random flake here and there in the house. The garage floor is glitter finish now lol.
Brilliant job. Forget about the people who make bad comments. At the end of the day the job looks mint and if it's not something you do every day it takes a little practice to nail it. It's the same in mechanics, you can be a good one but there's always those jobs you struggle with!
Love how you don't pay attention to the haters and couch quarterbacks. Kill them with success. Spread love not hate. Life is too short. Long time subscriber. I wish I had your ability to brush of the assholes. Still learning. You the man, Gunman.
This American loves everything you put out! Anyone who wants to be a great painter needs to diversify their technique, and learning from other painters is how you do it. I'm still a novice but candy is all I've ever sprayed. Ive never seen it done like this in person, only read about it. Please keep cranking out the killer work, keep that outlook, and don't stress what anyone thinks. Hell most Americans don't even like their next door neighbor, so dont take any negativity from an American seriously. They probably dont know wtf they're talking about anyway.
Looks good man, don’t worry about those crap talkers. I got 26 years in this occupation and I still got jealous haters. At the end of The day if you’re happy and you’re doing a good job ignore the rest
Love it brother! Try this tip...after you lay the flake, airline the whole car while still wet to remove or flatten as many loose or stacked flake as possible and the same when dry... then HS clear to build, then flat, then candy base or 2k and then flow... One extra run I know but this will drastically reduce your high spots and any break throughs will still be candy red. It also will add a look of extra depth to the flake. I personally never flat after spraying candy. It's always risky.
Your one of the best painters I have ever seen. A trick I learned with flakes is put down a similar base colour to the flake. It helps coverage and cuts down on heaps of stuff. Your job came out killer
Agree his technique and gun control is flawless. Regards the flake base....this depends on the look you want.....a black base highlights the individual flake a lot more....imo looks a lot better.
Hes a guy thats brilliant at his job what he does is his own business ,hes a perfectionist and striveing to find his perfect place on this earth.Im a body man myself and all i say is good on ya gunman.
Sir another great video. Thank you. As always I learned more from you and your video. I'm a street vendor and after watching your video about doing the lowrider panel I did the cart and sides of my van. She gets lots of attention with what you shared and the advice you gave when I wrote in on the video. Your generous sharing of knowledge has been more helpful than you might know. I'm building a new crepe cart this winter and it will be finished with some of your paint techniques along with a float decal or two. Thankyou and God bless.
I have done 2 motorbikes with flake/candy, I found it better to clear after the flake stage, flatten down that clear, then do the candy. That way any stand up flakes are taken care of before the candy goes on. But a killer job, well done. As for negative people, they are everywhere, just ignore them, and look after yourself.
Ignore the haters, no need to ever defend yourself when you produce the quality of work and achieve the results you get and put in the effort you obviously do ;)
I painted a tiger cub tank years ago. The bottom was silver and the top was black. After painting the silver i didn’t clean the gun correctly and when I finished the black had lots of silver particles in it. It looked fantastic, my favourite paint job ever.
You did an amazing job. I love it. The candy red looked awesome at the end, but I absolutely loved the silver by itself. I love bright glittery silver cars.
The cleaning up job after spraying flakes in my home custom painting studio probably held me back from painting for a year. I had to redesign the entire space for everything to prevent cross contaminations. Even though through all the troubles, flake jobs are still essential in my opinion, totally worth it.
I do a very aggressive tack rag after my last coat of flake. I've basically figured that the thing should look like almost like normal basecoat when you go to clear over it, if there's still proud bitties then I know I didn't tack rag enough. I'm not sure I've ever used anything quite as big as you are in this vid, but I thought the advice might be worth sharing. Love the channel, you've basically taught me how to paint over the years, thanks!
With flake this big you don't want to sand it flat until you are sure you have enough clear to bury it. Doing a scotch-brite scuff between applications of clear is the best way to avoid sanding the flake and solvent pop in the heavy clear.
Gangsta! Looks downright amazing gunny. I've been following along for a number of years and your videos inspired me to lay down a slick paint job on my 2006 Pontiac GTO Holden Monaro for you Aussies! Haha. And man did it come out sweet. Keep up the good work and screw the haters
Awesome to see this video. I do believe I saw the drama on FB, and I may have even commented in that thread. Was good to see the steps you took, and why you would do it differently.
That's an absolute stunning job mate, how anyone can talk sh!!t about you is beyond me. I know how hard it is to paint some jobs and especially in your climate. Your smashing it! 🏴
That looks really nice. I did something similar in a British Racing Green enamel on a motorbike many, many years ago with a similar result but used a lighter base colour and no candy, just flake mixed with the colour then followed by clear coats. Worth the effort in my books. I intend to do another lighter red flake job with candy later this year, so will keep your black base colour in mind. Don't see much flake these days.
Came out sweet Gunny. I've seen guys use scuff pads to knock down the flake in between coats. But you can't complain for the final results. I'd be ecstatic with it! 👍
I don’t get bad mouthing other painters. I like to make as many friends in the business. You learn from other painters. My friends have made me better, and I know I’ve helped others. Gunny, a bunch of us here in the States went to Standox training facility in Chicago. We all lived about 8 hours away. We were all 15 plus years painting, but we had the best time. We went to a Cubs game, some of the guys went to a strip club. The next day a couple guys were puking, and had hangovers. One guy charged $3000 on his company American Express, at the strip club and didn’t even remember it.🤣 It was a 3 day course for recertification, we have to do every so often, so we can warranty paint jobs, but really it’s to have a great time and learn. And also social network. I personally think it would be a blast to get to work with you! Even if it was one job.
When ya do flake only do 1 wet coat of flake and a light dust coat of flake then put 3 coats of HS clear on it sand down so it's flat with 1000 gritt as the finish grade then candy it and flow coat clear buff it and it will come up like glass @thegunman
I learnt the hard way like you about flake standing on end but it's on skateboard decks eg: low rider graphics i paint for man caves I now sand my flake before giving 3 coats of clear than sand again than candy clear & final clear coat
looks absolutely sick mate. 90 hours is mad fast imo for what this job is. fuck the haters, ain't worth the time of day. can't wait to see some vids from the new shop with standox, your IG alone shows you're properly back into your rhythm again since switching back. keep it up, and have a good one!
if some is talking shit it is because he is jealous nothing you have to worry about or defend about we all are working to be better painters we compete against our selves. not any body else , keep up the great work!!!!!!!!!!!
That red kandy job looks great.keep up the great work.also like your attitude towards all these negative people 😊.thats right enjoy your job,and hobby.
If you got standing flakes then either the pressure at the nozzle was too high causing dry spray that wouldn't let the flake settle into the clear, or your spray distance was too far which, again, causes dry spray. Or it could have been both. Looked good in the end though. Nice job! 👍
Gorgeous Job mate. People always want to have their say, but the proof is in the pudding. Even flake, even candy awesome off the gun, all of that would say that you clearly know what you're talking about. I watch three main spray painters, your self, sprayway customs and pharaway customs. Both of the other guys are heavy into flake and each one of you paint differently. I have been painting for 30 plus years and learn from you all the time. I would love to do a RUclips channel but I don't have patience for keyboard warriors and negative talk from people who are only ever going to watch others achieve while they try to tear them down. @@TheGunmanChannel no mate see the 3m pads you get that's got a white backing on one side and spongey type face. 3M part 07910 blow the excess off then dust that over them with no pressure on the pad. See before I attempted it for the first time I watched vids of the custom motorbike tank spray painters in Japan and a few American guys, they would do it several different ways some clear then sand them back then crack on with the rest of the paint job, some leave it till later and just blast them with air then tack pad them. The work these guys do is beyond the pale, they spend 100+hr on a tank mate but it's good to check out as their tactics are amazing.
@@TheGunmanChannel also see the wee silicone contamination spots you seen I don't know of this is the same thing I discovered but it sounds like it, what was happening was I'd sand them back but see the odd one that wasn't fully lodged in but still flattened, well it would allow more of the clear to be sucked in, effectively like a pin hole only obviously flat shaped under a microscope, that was causing the clear to capillary into it and give that effect you were talking about. Originally I blamed it on contaminated flakes but after testing it it turned out to be just the clear getting sucked in there
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve learned that the people who get the farthest in a craft are the ones who learn somthing from everybody and also bring others up not look to throw them under the bus while the rest of us want to learn to paint better 🤣
I hear everything you're saying, but I am a first time viewer and that was painful to watch with you venting for 12 minutes straight. Beautiful paint, forget the haters and just make beautiful work.

Yes sir, The smaller flake is easy to bury with Kandy and clear but that big ol bass boat stuff sticks up everywhere.

Gunman….no comments on paint today. You dispensed some world class wisdom about living life and our short time on Earth.
A quick lock down, few coats of clear base after you blow the loose flakes off, next time will give you fewer head aches mate
He did a great job it looks beautiful be proud of yourself

wow ,what a job , nice talk as well .
Gunman never ceases to amaze. Excellent paint my man.
Id love your knowledge 👌🏻
Great work & great philosophy on where you’re at mate….. life is short u crack on ✊
I always use a suction gun with stainless hex nuts. No clogging.
People definitely need to chill! Nice work 👍
Well done, some good advice in this video about negativity. AAA+ Gunman !

Communication takes minimum of 2: 1 speaker and 1 listener. Eliminate one and you have no communication, right.

Thank you for your work and words. Thank you my brother...car looking nice👍👍👍❤️❤️
Love it great job as always
Beautiful paint job Gunny. Fully agree with the grate advise & mind set
I started doing spray painting from home in 2014 and I have learnt so much from just watching your videos over & over never gave up until I got it right. Today we are still going strong as a small business. Love from Cape Town, South Africa
This looks GODLY! dead set heaven sent!
In regards to people trying to talk shit about you and put you down..
Just ask yourself 3 questions..
1) Was you happy with the job you did?
2) was your boss happy with the job you did?
3) was the customer happy with the job you did?
If all are YES.... Then f**k the shit talkers man :)
End of the day... Regardless of what people think.. If all 3 questions are a YES... Win Win...
Thanks for the tips ! Been looking to spray some candy and flakes
Best jobs are flake jobs
. Very eye catching.. I spray slow and a bit father away to stack up the flakes..
Totally dude
The mist coat is crucial to the overall build up
Most of the paint jobs I do are candy over flake some had artwork under the candy but that flake gets Everywhere

Originally I blamed it on contaminated flakes but after testing it it turned out to be just the clear getting sucked in there
Looks crazy cool!
Far out I changed to 4K and it was a different video ahaha didn’t even know there was a setting for video quality cheers for the tip car looks insane
Great job man I'm glad I ran into your channel

You got Elton John boots, man! 🚀
Thanks for sharing your experience. I’ve learned that the people who get the farthest in a craft are the ones who learn somthing from everybody and also bring others up not look to throw them under the bus while the rest of us want to learn to paint better 🤣
Looks greatl
I hear everything you're saying, but I am a first time viewer and that was painful to watch with you venting for 12 minutes straight. Beautiful paint, forget the haters and just make beautiful work.
Yeah good point, I think I was being a bit fragile back when I made this video, hope you can look past it.
