Because when the founding fathers drafted there declaration of independence the official name was "The United States of America" but you can't be the united states of american, so instead the denenonym was american. The country name simply says that it is a union of states on the american continent.

Latin is everyone that speaks a language that comes from the Roman empire. Spanish,FRench, italian, portuguese etc....

Latin is a language that was spoken in the roman empire, but not the ethnicities. French were gaulish celtic tribes , italians were etruscan tribes greek and latin tribes, in spain in portugal you had iberic and celtic tribes. When the roman empire conquered them they brought there language along with them. However the people of rome didn't all just speak latin, there was greek, arabic, aramaic, magrebh, berber, egyptian, celtic languages, proto-germanic.

    • @MoonLab_Gaming

???? Yes. Thats BEFORE. The modern Spanish, French, Portuges are mixtures of the original tribe language with Latin. Therefore this Modern languages are evolutions of Latin in several diferent ways. If you read my statement I said "...a language that comes from..." which doesnt mean they are Latin language speakers, But they are of Latin Culture, making the people of this Zones "Latin".

The genetic origins the inhabitants of Hispania, Gaul, and Italia were all the same. Northern Italy, Spain, Portugal and France ALL have same genetic base, that is mainly celtic. Therefore the languages evolved from Latin differently because the connection between the countries was blocked for centuries, not because of the different tribes in each region. And these 3 provinces ALL adopted Latin as their common day to day tongue, it wasn't like in the eastern provinces, the celtic languages in these provinces died during the empire. The term Latin refers to culture and language (in Europe) and to language and history (in Latin America).

Latin means you are a descendant of Latinus or you came from Latium (Lazio / Latina). The Language was named after the people who invented it or the area the language came from. Speaking a Latin *based* language doesn't make you Latin.

You got that right. They don't know what the term "Latin or Latino" means but it was a Mestizo man called Frank del Olmo who invented the term Latino (Which is grammatically incorrect when wring or speaking in English) instead of using "Latin American" to identify the "Ethnicity" of all the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas. They have to use their race to identify themselves and leave the Latin and Latino alone. Now they're coming up with another lie by calling themselves Latins also!!!

For example, Brazilians are not Hispanic because they speak Portuguese.Latino: every person who is born in Latin America, which covers every country in both Central and South America colonized by Spain or Portugal, which official language is Spanish or Portuguese. goodaim shield this is a result of early American Hispanics from former colonies sour at the strained relations with Spain co-opting the term to try to reduce any association with anything Spain. I'm Puerto Rican and Latino/a is defined as a catch-all term for people of nationality/ancestry of countries who's mother tongue is of Latin origin. Hispanic "Hispano/a" is a subcategory for specifically Spanish origin.
This has become an entrenched misuse of the term because some of the former colonies continue to push the negative image of Spain and bred the nationalism that causes negative association with Hispanic that'll won't be addressable any time soon. But then again not every colony was able to maintain amicable relations with Spain like Puerto Rico to an extent.

This video is confusing , Latino literally means anyone who speaks a Latin language and is from a former Latin colony. Haitians brazilians and other Spanish speakers from South America and West Indies are Latino. It doesn't have anything to do with someone's ethnicity like this girl implied. If ur a Latino of African and native ancestry you'd just be called Afro mestizo . I think the US census confuses people especially when they try to make Latino seem like it's a cultural identity. As for Hispanic I always took it as ancestors of spaniards who were left in Spanish colonies that Spain doesn't claim? Could be wrong *shrugs*

Latinos, West Indians, Hispanics is a mixed region through and through. Most of my DNA is African but I am not 100% Black, I was born into or descended from a South American and Caribbean family that has Portuguese ancestry, I am still considered Latino, whether I speak the language or not. Race doesn't dictate culture or ethnicity. Indigenous people throughout Central and South America may not speak Spanish, doesn't make them any less Latino. Cuba, Peru, Guyana and so many other islands and countries have Chinese, Japanese and Indian populations those individuals are still considered Caribbean/West Indian/Latino. Ethnicity is used to connect groups of people with a shared culture, history and or language. The Middle East isn't a continent or a country, it's a region but the inhabitants are referred to that way or called Arabs.

    Surinam (South America): Dutch
[English] Guyana (South America): English (duh!)
    Aruba: Dutch
    Jamaica: English
actually this list could go on forever.

Actually, the term Latino is a much stronger (or recent) reminiscence of the colonization than the term Hispanic, as people in the Americas NEVER called themselves "latino" (that was a pretty European name to call themselves), but "hispanoamericanos", but you know? This is what happens when all history people know about is about victimism, and not real history. Spain is actually much more "latino" than all those countries you call "latino". The thing are some(lot) people from Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Romania don't consider themselves as latinos. If a family moved from Italy to the USA, its members would be Italo-American. But if the same family emigrated to Argentina, instead of the USA, they would be "Latino" (a new race). That's according to USA logic. Similarly, 10% of the Argentines have German ancestry (Jonathan Schunke, Gabriel Heinze, Carlos Reutemann, etc.) but according to USA's genetic scientists they become "latino" race due to the fact of living in South America.

(Especially since Haiti shares an island with DR). I always understood the term as someone from a Spanish speaking country in the Latin American region. But since Brazilians are considered Latino that messes up the definition and opens up Inquiry as to if those other countries should be considered Latino too. Latino refers to a Latin based language like Spanish, Portuguese, and French. Those languages, and many others, developed from Latin after the Roman Empire fell and spread to the Americas through colonization starting after 1492. That's why those languages are also known as Romance languages because they come from the language of the Romans: Latin.

I feel like all these identifications are separating us even further. To people it's cool to be able to identify yourself and where you come from, but to me it just seems like you're trying to give yourself a sense of value due to feelings of inferiority. I think that once we truly give up these labels, we can start understanding each other. Giving up our labels and traditions doesn't necessarily mean surrending them. Letting our traditions and cultures melt together without prejudice gives way to a new sense of self that fits everyone.

Personally, (my opinion) I don't think those born in Latin/South America call themselves American, because that is generally referred to those who were born in the United States of America. (I mean, we can't call ourselves United States of Americans..that just sounds...weird.) Just like how Canadians call themselves...Canadians and not Americans. Here in this video, it talks more about ethnicity, sense of identity and touches a little on race. But in terms of nationality, it's really very simple; just where you were born and/or have citizenship in. In that case, people in South America wouldn't be calling themselves Americans but instead if from Brazil, Brazilians, if from Mexico, Mexicans and etc.

    • @SalvatoreEscoti

Also Mexicos official Name is " United States" but although is in in North America, like the USA it cant USe the Term "America" in its official name. . I mean all modern nations of the Americas have the SAME origin, for the first hundred years they where "Just" european Colonies. I dont know what american nation Emancipated at first from the Europe, but the it should be a common sense for all amricans,Emancipation from harsh conditions and trying to achive a free life with eqal opportunities for ALL! that is what THE AMERICAS stands for!!

    • @onemillionpercent
      @onemillionpercent 9 лет назад

***** idk that was just my opinion. when one says American, most people think of someone from the USA so that's just where the term comes from. and when someone says North American, they think someone who's Canadian or American, or if someone says South American...well that's just a very broad term that encompasses the many countries and different cultures of Latin American countries. so one could be Brazilian, Argentinian, and on....

    • @onemillionpercent
      @onemillionpercent 9 лет назад +1

***** Actually, the Americas (this is saying, the CONTINETS. difference between countries and Continents! USA is in North America, Brazil is in South America, Ethiopia is in Africa, Spain is in Europe, etc. etc.) only consist of North America and South America, the continents. And all of the languages spoken in South America, derive from Latin. Spanish, Portuguese, also I think some French. So South America, is indeed Latin America. If not, what do you think Latin America is?
I respect your opinion and how respectfully you are stating it as well, but most people in the world would disagree using logic, therefore... even though you may not agree, if we are called Americans by most people, and if most people think of the USA when someone says "America", then can't we just let it be? There's also differences between continents and countries. People think of North America as Canada, and the USA, what they actually are. No one will call Canada, "North Americans" or "Americans" first! Because the country is Canada, they will call people from there, "Canadians" first. You may argue that it's stupid to name USA as America, but we can't argue with history. It is what happened, and the people of the USA are Americans. I hope you understand this and that it makes sense. Countries are very different from continents -- each country has a different culture and it's silly trying to group a whole group of 2 continents together under one name and label when they have such a variety of differences. BTW, to give a bigger insight on the Canada thing, think of Brazil. You don't first call people from there Americans, right? You call them Brazilians...yet with the USA...we call them Americans first. :)
      I respect your thinking!

This is so wrong....As a Spaniard, let me tell you that the real latinos are: Spaniards, Italians, French, Belgians and Portuguese. Here in the USA, all these concepts are so f**** up. Latino means the countries that speak languages that derive from Latin, the language spoken by the "Romans". Hispanic is someone from Hispania, that is Spaniard, as opposed to "Lusitano", that comes from Portugal. All these are white europeans. Btw, by putting Spain and all countries of Latin America together it creates nothing but confusion. For example, a Spaniard has nothing in common (besides the language that is not even 100% the same) with a Mexican, not the same culture, not the same food, not the same expressions, not the same political system...nothing. An Argentinian has nothing in common with a Peruvian, etc. This is just a silly way the US has to simple throw us (I am from Madrid) in the same basket. It's like if in Europe we said that all US citizens, Canadians (except Quebec), South Africans, Australians, New Zealanders, British and Indians (because they were a Brit colony for a long time) were put in a category named, let's say, "Britanos". Totally ridiculous.

Also, the term latino or hispanic is really disgusting. Why don't you call people from Jamaica, USA, India or South Africa (english speaking countries) "anglosaxon" or "germanic", that's the same you did with the Spanish culture. I'm from Spain (In Europe, you know) and I feel it really offensive, like if you tried to disparage the countries from America where Spanish is spoken. You can't say Latin America as a whole because there are different countries, ethnicities, culture, and languages. For you is the same an Indian and an "American", or an Jamaican and a British just because they speak the same language? • @bobbymoya

Sorry Kat. Not 100% correct. The Venn Diagram on the cover is incorrectly labeled. All French and Portuguese speaking countries (Brazil, Haiti, St. Martin - which is half French and half Dutch - Guadeloupe, etc etc) should be on the extreme left light green side. They are Latino but not Hispanic. "Latino" is a Spanish-language contraction of the term Latinoamericano, which means Latin American. This is where most of the confusion comes from, because LATINO is a Spanish term, but it covers cultures who speak other languages. Latin American (or Latino) means any culture from the Western Hemisphere that in the present day speaks any language derived from Latin (namely Spanish, French and Portuguese, because there are no Romanian or Italian colonies in the "New World.") It does NOT mean a sense of community through colonization from Spain. Filipinos (colonized by Spain) are not Latinos. yet Brazilians (NOT colonized by Spain) are. On the other hand, the Aztecs, Cariocas and Incas Pizarro and Da Gama found centuries ago were not Latinos, until they assimilated to Spanish/Portuguese colonization generations later. Finally, people in English-speaking countries can sometimes also identify as Latinos, especially if they have ascendency or recently migrated from any of the French/Portuguese/Spanish colonies in the Americas.

I am an Argentine who has just come back from New York. One of the things that surprised me most was that Latin-Americans talked to me in English, and even called me "gringo". The "Latinos" I saw in New York are very different from the people I see in Argentina everyday. Argentina was second in terms of European immigration, after the USA. But Argentina doesn't have black people -although there is a minority of indians from neighbour countries. So, to put all Latin-Americans under the same label does not make any sense. At least, the "latino" or "hispanic" label does not go along with Argentines very well.

I identify as Spanish American because I'm legally and culturally from both countries. I cannot fathom why anyone not from Spain would identify as Spanish (seriously, lots of African countries speak French, and no one calls them French). Spaniards don't consider themselves Hispanic, though to be fair most people only know the term Hispanic because of American culture. So I guess for Spain Hispanic would be all the people originating in the former colonies who speak Spanish, and Latin American covers everyone South of the US border, no matter what they speak. It's definitely not a matter of connection to Spain, because the Philippines and Equatorial Guinea are also former Spanish colonies and I don't think ANYONE is calling them Hispanic, least of all themselves.

***** "Denying a part of who you are to say otherwise" ? Because of colonization we try to erase our native and afro ancestry as much as possible. And this whole romantic take on history that the Spanish "intermixed" is bullshit. The spanish killed, raped, and stole from our ancestors. Those of us that remained were brainwashed to "mejorar la raza" by marrying someone whiter than yourself. Yes we have Spanish blood but it's tainted by a violent history of rape, theft, genocide, whitewashing, and erasure. People continue to identify as "Spanish" even when they are clearly not, because we have a 500 year long history of colonization brainwashing us to empathize with our colonizers.

My point is that there's just something that feels wrong when a Latinx person who wans't born or raised in Spain calls themselves "Spanish". A lot of Latinxs feel ok calling themselves spanish becasue they're ignorant of their history and they think the Spanish were superior to Indigenous and the West Africans.

***** The term Hispanic derives from Hispanicus (which derived from Hispania), Hispania may in turn derive from Latin Hispanicus, or from Greek Ισπανία Hispania and Ισπανός Hispanos.
In English the word is attested from the 16th century.
Hispanus was the Latin name given to a person from Hispania during Roman rule.

ok just to make this clear. The term Latinamerica came from the French who wanted to differentiate Anglophone from Latin speaking people in the Americas continent back in the days of colonialism. Latin languages are: Spanish, Portuguese, French, Romanian, Italian and Catalan. Therefore, Latins are whoever speak one of these languages. Latinamericans are those who speak Spanish, French or Portuguese and they can be black, natives, white or mixed races. The term Latino is an expression created or just used in the USA. It stereotype people from Latinamerica as being just natives when Latinamerica is composed by other races.

I've just always used the terms "Central American" and "South American," when I am unaware of country of origin. For those from the Caribbean, I try to use specific country names. To me it matters because I don't think that indigenous populations need to be identified by their colonizers, but by their location. Growing up in the 80s in San Francisco, a sanctuary City for those who were trying to survive the revolutions happening in Honduras, Nicaragua and El Salvador, I met many students who were escaping horrific situations seeking a better life. one thing I find interesting though is that what I was taught when I was growing up as far as geographical locations goes, there were different names for different parts of the world then what are taught today.

Latino refers to the Latin language spoken by the Romans, refers to the Romance Languages derived from the Latin and refers to the Latin Culture of the Romans which they imposed on all the people that they conquered including the Spaniards and Portuguese in what they called "Hispania".
"Latin American" instead refers to a geographical location where a person comes from and whose languages originate from the Latin. Don't try to change history because history cannot be changed. There was nothing Latin on this continent before the Latin European colonizers, French, Portuguese and Spaniards, brought it here with their Latin-derived languages: French, Spanish and Portuguese.

You can look "Latino" and do not speak Spanish; because Latino could be an Italian, a French, a Portuguese, and Spanish, also you can look oriental and be Latino (Philippines) and you can look African and be Latino (Caribbeans, Haiti speak French), the reason because what language you speak and where that language comes from in this case Latin, not because where you were born or where you come from.

meh I've always felt people get way too caught up with "heritages". Wouldn't a person simply identify with the country they were born into and/or the culture they were raised in? IE Peruvian, Colombian, Brazillian, Mexican, Dominican, Puertorican, Spanish, etc... the term latino or hispanic feels far too broad and even outdated. It'd be like calling most white people "europeans", which I guess you could, but why?
It'd be like if people referred to be as a "slav", which I guess is historically accurate, but I was raised in American, but taught Ukrainian culture throughout my life by parents born in Ukraine. I'm American with a deep understanding of my heritage.
The fact the video has to dive into colonization from over 300 years ago seems trivial at this time.

    • @adamdomo8936
      @adamdomo8936 9 лет назад +1

maybe trivial isn't the right word, just... dated? I don't know if I'm accurately conveying what I mean. When someone asks me "what are you" or "what's your heritage", I don't feel it necessary to give them a 300 year history lesson to explain. Ie: I was born in New Jersey and raised by parents who came from Panama. So my heritage is Panamanian, but in reality I was in fact raised in New Jersey, so I'm just American with Panamanian blood, genes, and a good understanding and respect for the Panamanian history (this isn't my background, i'm just giving an example). You don't have to trace back to Montezuma to explain "what are you". It's a can of worms that anyone could open up.
Now it's tough to identify exactly what country their genes are from on the surface, so I am definitely guilty of just saying "spanish", which can quickly be corrected by saying "I'm from Panama", which I'd respond "gotcha".
Yeah I'll say dated is the better word.

Latino is someone who's ancestry is from a Latin country like Italy, Portugal, Rumania, France...Hispanic is someone who's ancestry is from Spain. These terms are not interchangeable, though people in US interchange them. US cannot tell you where you came from or what you are, only you can identify as either Hispanic or Latino. Do not fall into the one size fit all trend.

    • @jac1161

Correct! And another point? Latin is the language that was spoken first, in Rome, Italy. Italy = Italiacs. So, Italians are latinos as well, however Italians don't use the 'card,' (people are going to throw tomatoes at me for that but it's okay..I'l just smile and make bruschetta with them! :) And they blend well:) I love the Spanish language (very close to Italian but less tricky sometimes), and dancing...however I am blessed by my Latin, Italian and Sicilian roots.

Alex Santana I don't know what you're talking about, I am precisely defending that these terms refer to culture and whoever feels part of the Hispanic or Latin culture should fit in these groups. I was pointing out that in the first comment the use of the term ancestry is incorrect because a lot of South Americans are not descended from the original Latins (Europeans) and they still have all the right to be called Latin.

+Micca Santiago Slaves were sent to the Americas, the miniscule handful of slaves in Spain would never have been enough to change the demographic structure of Spain, as people didn't marry and breed with their slaves. As to north african influence, the moors ruled Spain like brits ruled India ie not mixing with the population. Muslim don't mix with with christians now, nor did they back then (Not to mention their expulsion by the Catholic monarchs largely dimineshed their numbers). The Basque language and culture, which predates even the roman invasion of the iberian peninsula, has had a stronger influence in Spain than any other subsequent influence, a clear example is the fact that Garcia (which comes from the Basque) is the most common surname in Spain.

It's all about the Romans. Hispanic comes from the Latin "Hispanus" meaning a native of Hispania or the Iberian peninsula. "Beati Hispani quibus vivere bibere est." Hispanic is anyone with roots in the Peninsula, including Brazilians and Portuguese. Latino or Latin is anyone whose mother tongue is a Romance language, meaning a language based on the language of the Romans, including Italians, Romanians, French, etc. Thus a French speaking Quebecois is Latino but not Hispanic and a Basque speaking Vasco is Hispanic but not Latino.

      3. adj.

  • @HurricaneHektor

I am an American. Period. I need no labels such as "Latino" or "Hispanic." If you feel that you have to represent yourself in such a manner to the world, it means that you are not secure of your own identity and have not come to terms with your history. Yes, what the colonist did to the peoples of the lands they conquered was horrendous, but there is nothing we can do about our past. The future, however, is wide open. And I choose to be freed from the negativity that the past can bring up by using labels that does nothing but separate us.
Therefore, that is the reason why I declare myself as an American. With no prefixes such as "Latino" "Hispanic" or even "Korean-American." Those are labels I have no need of. I am an American by birth with parents whose ancestry includes Korea, China, Spain, Italy, Germany and France. I am proud of my heritage, but I am also proud to stand without those labels as a human being of the world. It is what will advance us as humans, labels only causes hate and anger and separation from each other.

First of all it's "LATIN" in English and not "Latino" then if you're Spanish that is from Spain and you don't know that you're Latin, linguistically and culturally then it's because of your ignorance. People from Latin America are "Latin Americans". The Latino term apart from being wrong in English is an invented tern by Frank del Olmo. He cause all this problem. People from Latin America have nothing to do with identifying with Roman culture. They are Red-Skin Indians.

@Alberto Castillo All of you want to play "professor" but are actually ignorant . First of all Latino is grammatically incorrect t in English. The correct way is LATIN. When speaking or writing in Italian ,Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish then Latino/Latina is correct but not when writing or speaking in English. In addition Latin was the language spoken by the Romans and refers also to the languages coming out of the Latin and known as Romance languages; Italian, French, Romanian, Portuguese and Spanish then Latin also refers to the Latin Culture of the Romans. Secondly it was an "Hispanic" named Frank del Olmo (do a Google search about Frank del Olmo) who chose the terms "Hispanic-Latino" to unite all the Spanish-speaking people of the Americas.. Frank del Olmo thought that Latino was an abbreviation for Latin American which it is not because Latin means one thing and Latin American means another. And Latin is not your ""native" heritage. It's the heritage of the Italians and of the Latin Europeans. You have to use your RACE to identify yourselves like we all do and not use a term which doesn't belong to you. Everything Latin be it the Latin people, the Latin Language and the Latin Culture all comes from Italy and has nothing to do with the Red-Skin Indians of Latin America.

I love this argument. I also enjoy the subtle anti-European bias in the video. I find it really interesting how people in their native countries simply refer to themselves as "Mexicans", "Cubans", etc. The whole idea of identifying with a unified term to describe anyone with a Hispanic last name is silly. Here is a concept... If you are a citizen, you are an American. It's that easy.
Another observation... When did Hispanics stop accepting their European roots? Last I checked (at least in Mexico) the majority of people are mestizos, or people with BOTH Spanish and Indiginous roots. Both of my parents were born and raised in Mexico, they have always acknowledged both lines of ancestry. Why is this young generation so quick to deny a history so rich in accomplishments? Are left leaning "Hispanic studies" professors that effective in essentially brainwashing our youth?
It's time that we as Americans with both Spanish and indigenous roots, otherwise known as Hispanic, start accepting our diverse culture and stop dividing ourselves into groups that left leaning groups want us to divide ourselves into. We are better than this.
