    I don’t see why there’s an argument. It’s still hair growing from our scalp, relaxed or not. Going natural doesn’t automatically mean healthy hair either.💜

    I realized that the bottom line is: do what is easier for you. Some feel like natural is easier and some feel relaxed is easier. I’ve did both and PERSONALLY relaxed is easier for ME. I have friends that are natural, and that is easier for THEM. People who try to shame others for being relaxed or natural, have other issues. It’s not really about the hair. It’s more like an identity crisis.

      That's true. I went natural for months at a time in my 20s just to learn and get a feel of my hair. The beauticians would fuss at me when they would put the relaxer back in my hair because they didn't want me to go natural again but I loved the look of it and it seemed to do better. In terms of "easiness" it's completely opposite for me. My relaxed hair was SO much harder and more expensive to take care of than my natural hair. For my relaxed hair I had a lot of different products, protein treatments, flat iron, blow dryer. I had to do so much to it just to keep it from breaking. I had to avoid so much (outdoors stuff) because of my hair. I ended up hating having a relaxer. I've been natural for over 2 and a half years and I LOOOOVE it. My hair is so easy to take care of, cheap, and doesn't limit any of my activities. The only downside is detangling, ha.

      Same! People keep talking about how much easier relaxed hair is when I think it’s the same exact amount of work and effort as natural hair. Natural kinky/coarse hair isn’t difficult to comb through. People are just impatient so they end up getting frustrated quicker. I comb my thick 4c hair with ease while detangling my permed hair was so tedious because it was straight and would tangle easier.

    I love this video! I am guilty thinking relaxers damage hair, I went natural in feb 2010 and relaxed my hair this month. What I have learned is what was done wrong in the past, not timing my relaxers, not deep conditioning, relaxing bone straight, OVERLAPPING! My stylist always overlapped my relaxer ( I always had scabs on my scalp and bad burning from stylists, so I developed a hate for relaxers over time)so when I did it at home thinking (if I do it myself it will grow) I continued to overlap because that’s what my “professional” did. Also I thought my hair would grow down to my butt natural. All these years My hair stayed in braids under wigs trying to get it to “grow” I spent so much trying products, big chopped 4x , never grew past shoulders.Imma try limited heat, I don’t wanna go back to flat ironing monthly. I even tried locs a couple times, I went natural to feel free and it was the opposite, I feel more free relaxed. I’m exciting for the new knowledge, also I’m sticking with mild relaxer for now! I wanna enjoy my hair again and not struggle with doing it. My relaxed hair is a breeze, I don’t have to spend hours detangling and I use less product! I’m excited!

    Relaxing the hair makes tiny holes in the hair strands so you have to do more protein/moisture treatments. In one black hair book by Audrey Sivasothy says hair relaxers make tiny holes in the hair strands so you have to build up your hair with protein/moisture treatments more frequently. It is like pouring water in a bucket full of holes. But you can heat damage from blow drying or hot combs. You have to decide which process you will like for yourself. It is like a catch 22 like situation. Also some relaxed women are complaining that there is something in hair relaxers that prevents you from obtaining waist length hair. Good luck with your hair relaxers. In the end do with your hair what make your happy. I like natural or straight hair and both can styled in various ways.

    I took great care of my hair with a relaxer however, when you have scalp conditions that require a dermatologist, that cream filled with all those harsh chemicals irritated the heck out of my scalp, sores that open up and the hair starts to stick to the sore 🥺 and applied by a professional hair stylists. Fast forward to 4 years natural hair is huge, thick, and growth has surpassed the relaxer length near my but, no more scalp pain, and a simple regimen of olive oil and Shea butter. Yes all my 2 to three products are literally from the earth. Oh and the money saved from the “professional” beautician because I am the master of my hair. Relaxer is a tool, but like any tool it can be used improperly. I have been natural a long time and I have recognized that many tools can be used to damage the hair without chemicals. Do to having highly textured fine strand hair I have to be very careful in handling my hair to prevent breakage. I glad to see that there is so much innovation in haircare techniques better ways to apply and maintain relaxed hair, to ways to loc hair, and ways to manage and care for natural hair. Originally I became natural because I wanted to care for my hair without heat or chemicals. I admit that I did not have good experiences with either heat or chemicals at the time and am glad people now have much better options. Going natural did not automatically result in long healthy hair. I have however deeply enjoyed experiencing the journey of expressing my natural beauty and I think when I have struggled with my haircare it has been the joy of having my hair in its natural state that has caused me to continue forward. No matter the haircare method there is always effort that needs to be applied you just have to choose the esthetic and haircare system that works for you. The beautiful thing is that we have the freedom to choose different options at different times. Glad we have so many choices.

    As someone said to each their own. Personally I think I am allergic to relaxers. When I had it on I looked as if I was going through chemo and my head itched so much, I used to scratch it until it bled and even then it still itched, those 4 years of high school nearly killed me. The day I discovered the natural hair community and took on their practise, the itchiness went away completely, my hair and scalp literaly felt at peace. My hair FLOURISHED! I felt like I was meeting it for the first time. My family and friends legit give testimonies on the difference to this day. So I think we are all coming from different experiences. For some who experienced nothing but damage such as myself vs those who have had flourishing relaxed hair will have differenct perspective and opinions on the matter.
    I was always AMAZED by people like you who seem to have fourishing relaxed hair, good on you.

    Your hair is gorgeous, I’m relaxed as well I was natural for two years and my hair was so damaged in ways I had never seen when I was relaxed , before going natural my hair was healthy, after going natural I lost edges my hair was breaking off like crazy despite how much I moisturized I used a lot of great products on my hair I believe in investing in my hair products, however despite my experience with being natural I love the styles I see in natural hair or non relaxed hair, non-relaxed does not mean your natural if you have color, color has many harsh chemicals so your no different than a person whose relaxed lol, thank you Kristen for this video and speaking out on this controversial topic 😍😍

    I'm relaxed and I got into hair care journey because of the website Hairlista. Sunshine is relaxed and her hair is and has been on point since she started the journey. That was 10years ago. My hair is healthy and is usually between bsl and mbl. I don't plan to go natural anytime in the near or far future.

    I went natural during the pandemic so it wasn't on purpose but after getting twists and ponytail as my first style, I decided to stay on this journey. I'm falling more and more in love with the protective styles so it might be a few more years before I relax the hair again. I'm currently pressing the hair in between protective styling so I can see and feel the hair.

The product he uses on natural hair does most of the work so he doesn't have to yank and detangle and plus he cares about the scalp as well. When he first start doing my hair, he said it needed some love and he gives it just that. Can't wait to go there again next month because that's my happy place.🙂

    Love your video! I've been natural for about 5 years, and last year in August, I got a cute short tapered cut. It was fun, but now I'm done. One year to the day, I'll be returning to a relaxer. I was one to over-process when I was relaxed so I thought I'd go have it professionally done at a salon, but I'm finding a lot of women, yourself included, relaxing/texlaxing their own hair. The thought terrifies me, but the thought of sitting in a salon catching the "Rona" scares me even more. Any tips on relaxing virgin hair and not having it all fall out?

    • @kristenstikes
      @kristenstikes  4 года назад +1

      Thanks. This is such a complex time to live through. If you're comfortable, I always have someone relax the back while I do the front. 1. Know that the first relaxer may not get your hair as straight as you want. It may be a "texlax" even if that wasn't the goal. 2. However, I think texlaxing is a great way to cut down on damage from a relaxer. 3. Make sure you have a moisture/protein balanced regimen in place. Moisturize and seal almost daily. You'll have to really "baby" it well as it adjusts. Let me know if you have any more questions. :-)

    And because of this honesty I had to subscribe!! I totally agree with everything you said, it's important to educate ourselves and when I listened to your vid, I remember that when my mom used to relax my hair in HS and she took care of it, it used to be healthy and growing. When I decided to play "hot girl", I didn't know how to do things properly and because of that my hair wasn't healthy. I decided to go natural because of peer pressure but owh boy the struggle was real!!! I can attest to the fact that compared to my relaxed hair in HS, my natural was very unhealthy due to the products I used, inconsistencies in moisturizing and constant coloring. I was eventually tired of the huge fro and all the work it required and ended up being relaxed again. I love my hair and how well it does so Imma stick to being a relaxed girl and educate myself how to keep doing better 😁

    FYI for those who do not understand and to correct some misinformation in this video- Hair is acidic (low pH). Lye (sodium hydroxide) has a higher pH (is more basic) than no-lye, making it a harsher chemical than no-lye. The issue that people face is that no-lye (often calcium hydroxide) leaves calcium deposits on hair causing dryness if not properly chelated/removed from hair strands. If no-lye damaged your hair, lye is not the solution- you’re better off trying a better shampoo or having a professional apply the system.

    • @kristenstikes
      @kristenstikes  3 года назад +1

      Dr. G Yes lye can be harsh on the scalp while no-lye can be harsh on the hair. An assessment of lye being “more harsh” would be an opinion and I welcome those. Thanks for your feedback.

    • @nenebrat2389
      @nenebrat2389 3 года назад +3

      If you do your relaxer right your new growth wouldn't be so different from your the curl pattern you have since a relaxer is to only relax your curl not make it bone straight. So if you're 4c your curls should be on a 4b/4a level. There are ways to maintain both new growth and relaxed hair. Hell at the end of the day, it's all about what a person chooses to do with the scalp they spend money on and what works for them.

Funny story for you.....I had bra strap length hair and for some reason my hair started breaking off very bad! I could not figure out how to stop the breakage. The other day I watched a young lady talk about keeping combs and brushes clean, which I do. But she also spoke of damaged combs and bent bristles. So I examined my combs (I've had them for 20-years) and they looked ok. Because of my bad eyesight, I took a picture of them and blew up the image. OMG!!!! My combs had nicks and cut up and down the teeth of the combs that were catching on my strands and pulling them out!!! I threw ALL of those combs away and bought new.
