I recently got a Nikon Zf and I'm looking to aquire a second backup body, that's affordable and takes my Z mount lenses. Honestly, I’m leaning towards the Nikon Z5, but with the recent price drops the Z6ii is not much more and is appealing also. Nearly everyone I've spoken to who actually owns a Z5, LOVES it. I love my Zf, but I want something that will act as a more ergonomic and compact backup. I shoot portraits and headshots and an occasional family session. I don't need speed, and I don’t plan on doing video with this backup. I played with a Z5 in the store a bit and it felt really nimble and great to use. In use, I couldn’t really tell much difference between the Z5 and Z6ii. Both nice. Would you recommend the Z5 as a backup to my Zf? I know it’s not as technically advanced or fast but I don’t care. One look at the files the Z5 creates and I’m sold. Would you recommend the Z5 even now in 2024? Is the AF pretty good? I heard it’s gotten even better with firmware.
I picked up the Nikon Z5 as a back up camera to my Nikon Z6. I was so impressed by it and because it has two SD card slots it actually became my main body. In my opinion I actually think it focuses faster and finds the eyes more often than the Z6. Seeing that I do not do any video and not worried about a slower FPS. The Nikon Z5 fits perfectly in to what I mostly do in photography. So I was going to trade in my Nikon Z6 for the new Nikon Z7ii. And got frustrated that I couldn’t get it after it was released just like the Nikon 70-200 f2.8s that was on backorder for 10 months. A fellow photographer let me try out their Sony a7r3 and I was blown away by the fast and accurate auto focus. I decided to trade my Nikon Z6 in for a Sony a7R4. And it’s an amazing camera with some serious megapixels. Editing photos is a little different of pace than the Nikon images. But I been extremely happy with HAL well it hits the eyes every time in focus. So I picked up a Sony a9 and have been using both of them for about 85% of my portraits and weddings. But I kept my Nikon Z5 with the 50 & 85mm f1.8s lenses, and the sigma 105mm f1.4 art lens for an spare body and I also let my second shooter use it for weddings. I won’t part with it it’s that good of a camera even though I have mostly been using Sony. What I did learned was doing a comparison between the Z5 and my Sony a7r4. Taking the same exact photo and editing them to look identical. You would not know the difference unless you zoomed in 200%. Nikon hit a home run with the Z5. If your doing most portraits and some slower movement shots the Z5 is the perfect all around camera that will take professional portraits. I just wish Nikon would release all their equipment when they have plenty of it in stock. Enough with the rambling great video. Love your channel
I really want to try some Sony gear, but I haven’t quite gotten my hands on any yet! Good move for you, though. Yes, I LOVE my z5. I have it with me on vacation right now!! ♥️♥️♥️
@@Jennifer_nicole I have tried the 7iii and it was ok, not wanting to sell all my glass for next to nothing to have to pay the "Sony" premium for the same stuff. I have a buddy that has the Alpha 1 and he loves it. But he bought into Sony back a few years when Nikon slept on the mirrorless push.
I'm still using the Nikon D750 and probably will be for several years, as the weight isn't an issue, and shouldn't be for most guys. It's been a mainstay for several years for Pro wedding photographers, albeit I'm more of a Landscape/wildlife photographer personally, and have thought that if I where to move up, it would be the D850, although I certainly don't need a 46mp camera, but have seen some outstanding imagery from it. So, I'll stick to what I've got, as I know the camera so well now, have a host of different. FX lenses of course, that goes from 16mm up through 600mm, and everything in between. I have a 50mm F 1.4 that I bought several years ago, and probably haven't used it ten times, as I don't take many portraits, and if I do will use my Tamron 90mm F/2.8 or 70-200mm F/2.8, and still have the thought of getting an 85mm F/1.4 or 1.8. I'm disappointed in the low light focus speed on my Z5, my Z50 focuses faster and more accurately. I'm curious about your thoughts and which focusing methods you've had success with. I'm considering buying the Z6 now for faster low and moderate light levels focusing speed.
I have the Z6ii and it outperforms them all in low light. I would say the z5 and z6 are comparable in low light. I have really bad issues with autofocus when something is back lit. That really works my nerves, and I haven’t found a work around. With the z5 at a recent wedding I actually put it in manual focus, and I would wait until the box turned green to take photos. It worked really well for dancing later in the evening.
@@Jennifer_nicole How do you find the autofocus on Z6II on backlit subjects? My Z5 comes up with a low light mode sign (in AF-S mode) even in bright sunlit scenes if the actual face or just an eye is darker than the bright parts of the frame (this of course applies to almost all backlit scenes). I think this is because the focus is acquired directly on the sensor and if you see your subject darker in the EVF, i.e. the actual exposure readout, the mirrorless camera may struggle to focus (this is different to DSLRs as they have a separate / independent autofocus system from the actual exposure readout). When I switch to the AF-S mode, I get more reliable focus and the scene goes brighter sometimes for a split second to allow the sensor to acquire focus better in low-light / backlit situations. One loses the continuous focus this way but I found it more accurate for stationary / slowly moving subjects. This should be much improved on the Z6II because the focus detection range starts at -4.5EV even in AF-C mode (as opposed to -2EV on Z5 or Z6). Hence my question :-)

Hey I just had to choose which Z series I wanted to get and after doing over a month of homework on the subject I found that I could get a Z6 for about $1050 off of eBay with less than 5k shutter actuations and the difference between the Z6 and the Z5 is that the Z6 does have that little screen you wanted on top of it and it also comes with a MAJOR FACTOR for you shooting hand held in low light and that is "IBIS" and that is worth -5 ev. The Z6 is cheaper than the Z5 and it has the 2 major things you want by listening to you. I'd suggest selling the D850 and getting a Z6 to shoot as your main camera and use the Z5 for the backup and leave the 85mm on it then put the 70-200mm f2.8 on your Z6 and that will help you TONS. good video.

The sensor is 45mp. Basically it makes me double the slowest shutter speed rather than using the reciprocal rule, which is one of the reasons I wanted to switch from d850 anyway.
I agree 100% on the ISO 2000 comment. Also, the D850 grain looks good at 3200 ISO. Does the Z5 beat out the D850 in Higher ISO, from what I see yes. But if anyone bought the D850 thinking it was going to be a High ISO monster, then they didn't' do their homework. Also, I think sometimes people want to see an issue so they can "Rationalize" switching to Mirrorless. I can find flaws in my D4 all day long, but it is a beast of a camera even now 10 years later. I can with no issues blow up prints from the D4 and they look great, but if I pixel peep it sure I will find something. Most customers don't even notice noise in the D4 shots, let alone know what it even is. The first two reasons (Weight and ISO) are very subjective. Take the weight of a Z setup vs a DSLR setup, and with lens for lens it is only 400 grams (a little over 3/4 or a pound) difference. The lenses on the Z mount sometimes can weight more than the same lens on the DSLR. So, your savings on the body really ends up being the only real difference. I bet a big chunk of that weight is weather sealing and battery. Don't get me started on Mirrorless vs DSRL battery life. :P

The sensor is 45mp. Basically it makes me double the slowest shutter speed rather than using the reciprocal rule, which is one of the reasons I wanted to switch from d850 anyway.
@@Jennifer_nicole I see. I have a z6 and z7 ii. I prefer the z7 because of the mega pixel . I use a crop when need the files smaller
In the same boat - z lenses though are expensive
Nice, very informative video, It will help me take my decisions.
I love my D750 for its dynamic range and autofocus in low light, i hesitate for the z5 autofocus in low light . . .
I have both and it’s fine. The update addressed it in firmware. Z5 focus’s just as well now in low light.
@@kalimarus Would you say Z5 is a big upgrade from D750 when it comes to autofocus overall?
Very usefull info.
😻
Very reasonable facts about the advantages of new z system... Z5 is a great camera!!!
I ❤️ it!
I think you have serious problems with grain! ISO 2000 with the D850?? Come on!!
Z5🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥😍😍😍
💯 😻
Thé d 850 is more confortable
I agree it was. I’ve gotten used to the Z series now, though, and I love them.
