Having worked at Taco Bell for some time years ago, your description of just dunking the porous, spongy shell into a big bucket of oil and letting it soak it up is 100% accurate. It is just deep fried flat bread after all. Thanks for doing such honest and entertaining reviews!
I wonder if the amount of oil on the outside of the shell has anything to do with the bacon that went into it? Typically, anything that is prepared with bacon tends to be a little more greasy than the same without. It would be interesting to get one "customized" with the bacon "on the side" so it's separate and see if that makes a difference. I mean, why aren't other Chalupa's this oily? I order them quite often and I've never experienced any oily shells.
They need to bring back Baja sauce. We used to make some awesome concoctions when I worked there. Cheesy gordita crunch with Baja sauce nacho cheese and sour cream...awesome. Also you need to steam the flatbread twice. Fck yea.
Normally when you make a flour tortilla, you mix the dough, press it out and then bake or toast it. If instead you deep fried it, you get a chalupa shell. This is probably why you notice the excess greasiness. It is also the reason chalupas do not age well. Approximately 6 to 8 minutes after coming out of the oil they harden and get very tough. You are correct though a good sauce makes or breaks a chalupa.
Taco Bell is the flirt of the fast food industry. Sometimes Taco Bell can get you're heart racing, but most of the time you leave disappointed and somehow they draw you back for more fools gold.

My favorite Taco Bell item lately has been the cheesy bean and rice burrito. Its about 5 inches long, its jam packed with rice, beans and cheese sauce, and its only a dollar. 2 of em will fill you up. A good cheap lunch!
Taco bell prices have been getting insane over the years. $5 for this is nuts and even the normal chalupas are over $4 now. I only get the my cravings box from there now since its a good deal.
This Bacon Club Chalupa is $6.19 in my generally cheap Taco Bell market. Insane. I'd love to buy this but not for that price. Especially since I don't remember the last time I had a fresh Chalupa shell that wasn't stale.

I just went to Taco Bell yesterday and for the first time in my life I spent $20 on Taco Bell items and left still hungry. $20. On Taco Bell. Really shows you the glorious state of inflation we are living in as I never thought you could even eat $20 of Taco Bell in one sitting
@@VillPom Think I used to spend around 25-$30 and got a couple of steak chalupas, steak nachos, a cheesy beef and potato burrito and like one or two soft tacos for that price
Pro tip: Buy yourself a few cans of the Mission brand of refried beans (around $1 each), a large pack of flour tortillas (about $4), and a bag of pre-shredded cheese of your choice ($2-$7). I prefer La Victoria Hot Salsa Brava (about $3) as the perfect burrito hot sauce. Spread some beans inside a tortilla, sprinkle some cheese in, and roll it up. You can actually pre-roll several of these and stuff them into a ziplock bag (so that the bag keeps them rolled). Then, whenever you want a quick burrito, pull one out and microwave it for about a minute. Add sauce afterwards. These will be almost free, compared to Taco Bell... much tastier, and much more filling. Bonus points if you want to cook some hamburger in a skillet with cumin, chili powder, and cayenne (equal amounts 1:1:1), and a pinch of salt (or just dump in a paper packet of taco seasoning). This will make the ultimate American style beef and bean burrito. It really doesn't take all that long to prep (especially without the hamburger), and they stay prepped in the fridge for long enough. It's actually faster than driving to Taco Bell (you can nuke one in 30-60 seconds).
I had no idea the quesarito was going away until you told me! I'm glad you did so I can get it a couple more times before it goes. It's such a shame because it's long been my favorite item that's sadly been hamstrung by being an app exclusive.
hey! if you sub out the beans for rice and beef for steak, add chipotle sauce, and grill a beefy 5 layer, it's basically a quesarito! only difference is there's no shredded cheese between the two tortillas and it's a little smaller. i feel bad ordering it but sometimes you still have to fill that craving, and it's really not much harder to make than a regular quesarito.
@@fortunajade3152 that's good to know thank you for the tip! I think I would also remove the beans since the quesarito doesn't have them (and I don't like them lol).
Chalupa is one of my favorites from Taco Bell when it’s fresh and right from the fryer, the pita flat bread is awesome. I buy a few of those on their own and make my own sandwiches in the toaster using that bread. Try using the crispy chalupa shell with an Italian caprese mozzarella basil tomato, oil over oil, balsamic vinegar and basil. 👌🤌🏼
Ready for the crown to come out my friend! Love to see the eating and facial expressions, or lack thereof, whilst chewing the mind-blowing cuisine you review with your videos!
When I was a kid in the 1970’s Taco Bell had two menu items they don’t have now but should. The Bell Berger was yummy. It was a soft ham bun with a scoop of taco mean, some mild sause, shredded cheese and I think a little onion. They were great. The other was the original enchredo. Basically an enchilada. Those were great too
As for the Oiley Chalupa shell I'm going to guess that the oil is not hot enough. When frying anything the oil needs to be hot enough when you put your food into to immediately crisp up the out side of that food so it doesn't absorb the oil as it cooks. If your food (chalupa) crisps quickly it has a shell minimizing the amount of oil it absorbs. If this is the 3rd or 4th chalupa fried in the last minute then the oil hasn't been allowed to come back up to the proper temperature to crisp the chalupa enough to prevent oil absorption. Taco Bell probably uses twice as much oil every day since they lose so much to absorption.
When it comes to lesser known FF brands, he doesn’t generally review them. He goes for what videos will garner the most reviews. I learned this fact from listening to his podcasts 😊
He's got to be known nationally so I wonder if they make his special? It looked very fresh!!!!! Everyone should be ready for him cuz I definitely trust him 😂.
If I worked in Taco Bell's marketing department, I'd be pressing to find out where he lives and be sure our stores in his area are the best in the country.
I wondered if employees had ever done anything mean to him because that knew who he was and were disgruntled for some reason. Like when he has gotten sick. I always worry about that 🥺
Had the bacon club chalupa last week on my lunch break. I only stopped by Taco Bell because it was fast, I hadn't been there in a while and was hesitant. Boy it was delicious, the ratio of all the ingredients combined was very filling. Oh and I had to get the Baja Blast, I always do when I go to Taco Bell.
One of the main problems with Taco Bell is that if you ever find something you like, they keep changing the menu. Endless varieties of tortillas and fake meat. But they never know when to stop switching and just keep the best items.
I am wishing you well for your teeth getting sorted out. Thanks for the review! If I lived in America I might even try this! It was nice to watch you pleased with the food and having enjoyed it. Good luck for tomorrow and getting some good permanent help for your tooth.

Not often you dip into the thousandths for a score but Taco Bell should be overjoyed for the positive, albeit not ringing, endorsement. Great review as always.
Hit or miss is the most accurate way to describe Taco Bell. The last few years have been mostly miss, but I remember in my earlier days, I remember having a satisfied belly after a Taco Bell meal on many occasions.
OMG! That background looks exactly like my grandma's parlor. I'm 67. LOL Last two times I went to Taco Bell in my home town they were out of... wait for it,..TACOS. I'm done with'em. Liked the video though.
The chalupa bread not being crispy anymore really pisses me off. The OG Nacho Cheese Chalupa used to be GOATED, but it HAS TO BE CRISPY. I know for a FACT that bread was not crispy.
I'm curious about that oiliness. You should test it with the traditional way of making a taco shell. We do it all the time here in Texas. Get an inch or two of oil heated in a skillet. Buy a cheap bag of corn tortillas and put one in the oil. After several seconds, use tongs to fold it in half and hold the halves apart from each other because the longer it fries, the harder the shell will become. You'll mess up a few, but you'll get the hang of it quickly. After you get a few good taco shells, make some cheap and easy homemade tacos. Then test how oily those authentic shells are. They never leave a residue like that. So, I'm curious what the deal is with that? Great video as always!
Chalupas used to be my favorite until they changed the tortillas, they taste ok but they're not good as they use to be to me but this one sounds delicious. I'd try it, especially since it has bacon & avocado ranch sauce on it 😋
It didn't look like they had the oil hot enough when they cooked the shell. Just by looking at the color you could tell. If the oil isn't hot enough, things will soak it up.
Chaluoas are only good if they aren't crunchy. I had one of these a few weeks ago. And while the shell wasn't crunchy the ingredients inside were clearly bad. I especially wish they took more care in evening out the layers. I would get one bite of nothing but lettuce and the next I would get nothing but nasty bacon.
Them doing away with the quesarito is evil, cuz we could get it as a vegetarian option with black beans. The chalupa is just good but the best part of this review is how sharp Reviewbrah looks in his suit.

Hit or miss is the most accurate way to describe Taco Bell. The last few years have been mostly miss, but I remember in my earlier days, I remember having a satisfied belly after a Taco Bell meal on many occasions.
They fill everything with lettuce nowadays. Every place does. It's disgusting.
🎶 Hit or miss, I guess they always miss, huh? You're eatin taco bell I bet you got the shits huh!🎶
It wouldn’t be a bad thing we’re the lettuce be decent tasting and non bleached or whatever. I call it graveyard lettuce.

We don't even have taco bell in Finland
I tried this today. Really good! Thanks Report of the week!
I truly enjoy the way you speak and present yourself. It helps me feel like we’re in a better time than we are in.
Glad to see one of your reviews, they are somewhat like a therapy for me when I'm a little stressed..
The whole presentation 10❤
Amazing video as always!
I Just adore you and your channel!!! Keep up the good work!
My dear John, he should become a famous food critic 🥰🥰🥰 he's so smart.
Real OGs will remember when Reviewbrah used to do travel vlogs about going to NASCAR races
OMG! That background looks exactly like my grandma's parlor. I'm 67. LOL
Last two times I went to Taco Bell in my home town they were out of... wait for it,..TACOS. I'm done with'em. Liked the video though.
The oily bread suggests the fryer was not hot enough. Cold oil will create that effect.
Another great review to start off the day and I hope your tooth is on the mend!
Now that's a suit! Love the pinstripe style
Brooo lookin' mad chic today! That suit goes really nicely with your eye color. I had to say it
I thought the same, I wish more men would dress this way
@@loriehabel477 me too, tbh
I'll try probably today if my taco bell has them. Because as we know, not every 1 will. Thanks for the review! 🎉😊
That item actually looked pretty good. Your reviews are the best and you are looking quite snazzy.
Hello John !! Always good to see you *smiles*
Oily chalupa shell was probably due to the oil frying temperature being too low at the time of frying (soaks in).
The chalupa bread not being crispy anymore really pisses me off. The OG Nacho Cheese Chalupa used to be GOATED, but it HAS TO BE CRISPY. I know for a FACT that bread was not crispy.
Dear John, long time fan here. Missing the car reviews but its okay!! Keep up the good content
reviewbrah i thought that taco was gigantic in the thumbnail thanks
Great video as always!
i had it the other day and it was surprisingly good 😮 nice amount of bacon for the price imo
The world famous fingernails on full display in this one
You would think that with all these fast food reviews that he would grow into that suit. This man is a metabolic mystery.
Chalupas used to be my favorite until they changed the tortillas, they taste ok but they're not good as they use to be to me but this one sounds delicious. I'd try it, especially since it has bacon & avocado ranch sauce on it 😋
They come out wet and half cooked now
@@gibememoni I can believe that because they don't taste the way they use to.
$5 at some locations, $7 at others. Good job as usual TB!
It didn't look like they had the oil hot enough when they cooked the shell. Just by looking at the color you could tell. If the oil isn't hot enough, things will soak it up.
I enjoy watching your videos and you help me not to waste my money by trying it yourself and saying whats good and whats bad
Another excellent review … well done! 👍🏻 Your videos are the best.
fast food places shudder when this guy walks in
Years ago they made chalupas right: Crispy and how they look in the pictures. Now I just get un-fried flatbread everytime.
You are a classy dude. Look at this, look at what we see here, what you've given us--your color-coordinated snazzy 3-piece suit and tie, the hair combed, the framed pictures, and the floral arrangement on the fancy bureau in the background. You never curse, and you enunciate well. It all creates an, as you put it at 11:42, "optimally enjoyable" video experience.
I still miss the volcano burrito😢
Taco Bell’s really the only fast food I’ll eat.
Saving me the trip to taco bell much appreciated review bruh
Hope you're doing well bruh, good to see you
no other food reviewer employs such precision when rating an item. that's why I trust him implicitly
In America, the Chalupa is no longer a flat crispy taco but a puffy thick hefty delicious meal in a single taco
Reviewbrah, you have made reviewing fast food into a true art form. All hail.
Hope you get to try Little Caesars new corncob crust pizza!
