- Herr Gott, nun schleuß den Himmel auf (Lord God, now open the Heavens) BWV 617 from the 'Orgelbüchlein' by Johann Sebastian Bach, played on the 1963 Hammarberg organ in Boda Church, Rättvik, Sweden. The organ has some pipe material from the previous 1874 Åkerman organ. Here I'm using: L.H.: Rörflöjt 8', Flöjt 4'; R.H.: Gedakt 8', Rörflöjt 4', Regal 8', Tremulant; PED: Subbas 16', Borduna 8', Flöjt 4'.

'Lord God, now open the gates of Heaven!'🚪This is one of Bach’s greatest chorale preludes I think, and oh boy, is it heavenly…!🌈😍The other day was Candlemas, commemorating how Simeon saw baby Jesus in the temple of Jerusalem and immediately knew that it was the Messiah. Simeon wouldn’t die before that moment. In this hymn Simeon himself sings about how he’s now ready to end his earthly life ("I’ve suffered enough, I’ve fought myself tired") and move on the eternal rest, and you can really hear in the left hand figurations how he’s going up to Heaven!👼A common interpretation of the pedal part is that it symbolises Simeon knocking on Heaven’s gate…👊The musical texture is quite unique among Bach’s chorales.
