Your shack reminds me of certain official full-time government radio monitoring stations from the 1990s. The IC R9000 was prominent back then, but has since been replaced by the R9500, and R8600. The wideband log-periodic antennas used were long and high! Geographic location is the most important factor for DX signal reception, antenna second, RX third. Not sure if MW DX also covered at your QTH.
Congratulations Eric on an awesome SWL station!!! It shows some real dedication to radio, not to mention the time, effort & knowledge required to put something like that together. I wonder if you have ever been tempted to study for an amateur radio licence? I suppose though with all that spectrum to listen to, I doubt you would have time HI! I hope to appear in your log sometime soon, if not already :) Best 73, Mark G0VOF

Incredible radio shack! An inspiration! My only radio is an Icom 756 Pro3, which I use for SWLing with a GAP Titan vertical. I was thinking of buying a new Alinco DX-R8, just to have a second radio. How would it compare to the Pro3 for SWLing? Thank you.
@nl6777 Klopt! Honderden ambassades, persbureaus, Interpoldiensten, amateurs en nog veel meer op ontvangen. Veel met QSL bevestigd, prachte collectie brieven en kaarten aan overgehouden. Die Wavecom W4010 was een mooie opvolger.
I read books from the 20s and 30s and 40s of how hams use to design and build and modify radio apparatus., The shack is impressive amount of radios could be an FCC listening post ? however hams tend to go to commercial equipment these days. I would suggest to the ham and shortwave community to get back to the building and experimenting . I am more impressed to see a humble home built station by a lowly ham who made 100 countries on home brew... For the video nice lot of commercial equipment though. best regards ham radio ve4akf
I'm a noob, but I didn't see any transmitters or transceivers. All those standalone receivers are probably considered antiques in the era of software defined radios.
+Bandana zX no way. the standalone receivers can tune far better to specific frequency ranges than any digital radio, and they'll often be better at picking up SSB/USB/LSB.
Technically speaking this isn't a ham shack. Ham refers to amateur radio. If you are just a short wave listener, then it isn't amateur radio. I guess you could call this a Short Wave Listening shack. People who aren't into radio don't understand the need/desire for having tons of radios. Let me see if I can explain why someone would have so many radios. Different radios perform different functions. These days you can get "do it all" radios that cover a bunch of bands. But it's nice to have separate radios. From an amateur radio stand point you are likely to have multiple antennas. So having multiple radios eliminates the hassle of having to switch antennas every time you want to operate on a different band. Also, if you have multiple radios you can monitor multiple frequencies at the same time. Multiple radios also give you backup radios in case something goes wrong with one of them. There is also the collector aspect. Sometimes you pick up a radio just because it's cool. I have multiple radios and plan on getting more. Here is what's on my desk right now (not counting hand held); Radio Shack HTX-10 10 meter, Radio Shack TRC-503 CB, Alinco DR-130 2 meter, ICOM IC-730 HF, and ICOM IC-735 HF. I have a Yaesu FT-817 that needs repair. Otherwise that would be on my desk. I also have an old radio shack base scanner that isn't on my desk at the moment. So yea it's not unusual for radio geeks to have several radios.
+purplemutantas I think it's great. Ran across your tour while seeing how my own podcast did on search results. I totally get it. And while I will never have as much equipment as you, I'm pretty sure I wish I did :) Be well and 73!!
Obsolete soon due to all node digital receivers out now like the new air that decodes 18 digital types w analog wideband receivers plus the new Icom about to hit. Its 2017 and all these Radios will need to be switched out to be able to keep up w things..73s
I’m confused watching this video... Very impressive shack, but why don’t you get a ham radio license so you can put your voice on the air? I’m sure you could be an asset on the HF bands. With SWL, you could have the same results with one radio and one antenna. My ham shack fits into a backpack and I talk to stations across the globe while experimenting with many different modes. I also SWL with the same gear.
@stewartx5 WOW!! you really schooled him. I bet he didn`t know that? Why dis on the guy he seems to know what he wants to do and has done a super job at it. He probally titled it Ham radio to improve serch results. Now get back to your two meter repeter "GEEK!"
rickster348 One listens only. The other one talks, builds antennas and radios from zero and can help in emergencies and disasters as they are licensed.
You do not copy CW QSO? Morse Code is an important part of amateur radio. I have a friend who is also SWL and copy CW. He has received many QSL communicated with CW.
I think Eric dont want to talk on the bands, probably he simply enjoy it the most to listen. Some ppl are maybe more reserved in that case. But his taste in music is horrible lol.
Never seen such a fantastic radio shack - congrats!!!!! Very fine!!!
