I love you slowly realizing that tanuki, kitsune, and tsuchigame are all types of Yao Gai or youkai. This ancestry is just the generic version that also encompasses promoted/ demoted members of the celestial bureaucracy from china or other similiar ascended common animals/ objects
lol yeah that did happen. I love myths but I am not well versed enough in any of these myths to really know what I'm talking about before I start reading it. I really wish I were. These are so much damn fun to explore.
I keep reading this and I read it to Storm too and I just think it's perfect. These creatures are newly Born Into the world and not only do they not know their place they don't understand themselves. Or why they exist. They are filled with anxiety.
This gives me an idea for one with the hounded thief background that isn't even a thief. A King thinks you stole his crown cause he woke up went to put it on & there you sat where he normally kept it. He called his guards then you escaped with a real thief in the dungeon & apprenticed with him.
HAH! I love this! What a fun creative idea. And the crown Yaoguai would have so many stories of the king to spread rumors about too from it's days as his headwear.
This might be my favorite ancestry yet, I love it! So much flavor and I enjoy the picture of fluid changing between humanoid and something more ... monstrous ^-^ Looking forward to play one

On the Improved Signature Weapon feat: dawnsilver is the old mithril. The material entry states that it counts as silver as well. The only damage-relevant materials it doesn't get are adamantine and cold iron. If your weapon has cold-iron before becoming signature, then you'll have all the weakness triggering materials (AFAIK, adamantine is only for overcoming resistances)
Some ideas: - an old concept or mine is Myrmidon. A 4E Ant Swarm Druid. He actually is a Ant swarm that gained sentience and took the form of the most dangerous predator they knew - human! - Fey Summoner, that is a animated dryad tree. And his dryad is the Eidolon. - you could make a Team called "the Saiyans", that are all Vegetation Yaoguai. With a Kakkarotto, a Raditz, a Nappa. Maybe a Broli too.
Damn that ant swarm is creepy as hell but a great idea! And I love the idea of playing 2 halves of a supernatural duo like the Yaoguai tree and the Dryad. Neat!
I have a cool idea for a Yaoguai who used to be a book or a scroll. I’m thinking they’re a thaumaturge. Using the knowledge they contained for their esoteric knowledge checks.
Cat Hair In Eye. It's a new conditions. It's kind of like a combination of Dazzled and Sickened. Everything is concealed to you until you take an action to attempt to remove the hair from your eye.
@@WisdomCheck its the first time i see a Jugernaut mutagen used in that way, but make sense to own a reusable one since you are constantly rolling saves
Natural Mutagen is strong wtf. One of the effects possible would be getting a Drakeheart Mutagen on a martial character, like a Champion, Rogue or Ranger that don't have innate access to Sudden Charge: with Drakeheart you have an item bonus to Perception to help with Initiative and you can use Final Surge to Stride twice. It's once per day and needs preparation, but I still think it's great. Heck, take a Collar of the Shifting Spider on a Monk and use Deadweight Mutagen when you roll Initiative, the lose of Speed is mitigated by being a Monk and you have a great action economy to Trip foes while having Reach.
Yeah! They're cool! I've been excited about covering THIS more than most other things I've covered. I love the idea of a creature that can be made from ANYTHING and can revert to that form. "I was a clay jar full of sake for 10 years. MAN those were good times".
Man, was I taken aback by the additional benefits of the yaguai for vegetation. Yeah, the others get +1 AC, +1 to attacks, some resistances, very neat stuff. But then there is one leafy boi who just gets FAST HEALING 5. I love it.
The fact they change back to their true form after falling unconscious. Make me think that when your party checks on you they might believe you are missing, when In reality you are just that pot on the bed. Interesting roleplay moments
Between the Yaoguai and the Yaksha, it's cool that we're finally getting ancestries who have the capacity to outlive the elves. D&D was created nearly 50+ years ago, and in that entire time, the elves have reigned supreme in terms of maximum lifespan.
Jeez I completely freakin' agree. I love eternal creatures and I didn't like that the only way you could do that before now was basically the elves and an object or plant.
Big bad idea.... You have an evil farmer plant a bunch of vegetables and he screams out Arise my lord my Master! the prince of all vegetables!! A fist Burts out of the ground and he yells yes I am the mighty prince Vegeta. Then Vegeta go around collecting other sealed vegetables to revive nappa, raditz, etc
It could be fun to play a born of animal yaoguai(cat) with an humanoid form of a catfolk, and the werecreature archetype(werecat) who actually believes he is a catfolk and is completelly oblivious to everyone else telling him oherwise. Maybe he became a yaoguai while he was the pet cat of a catfolk and the confusion of the transformation convinced him that the catfolk was his parent. I was an iron ring in a torture chamber. The suffering of the people tied to me is what awakened me. I try not to get into my Yaoguai form because it reminds me of the suffering. I will create a cleric and due the full healing stuff. Need to think about which god. My lore is Torture Lore.
My main problem with Yaoguai is it has too many good feats. I need the Ancestry Paragon alternate rule lol. I’m definitely playing a Tiger Yaoguai who is a Tiger stance monk. Most of the time he’ll be in his cute pest form and be a Tiger cub lol
I wonder why the unarmed attack for the Morphic Strike feats has an action cost. Unless I'm confused, most unarmed attacks don't have that. Does that imply you can't use the attack as a part of other actions that involve an unarmed strike?
Y'know what? That's a good question and yes, it appears that it does imply that. But I think that's dumb. So I have elected to ignore it. It's just an unarmed attack as far as I'm concerned. Maybe we'll get more clarity later.
Improved Signature Weapon is not worth a 13th level feat. If you're 13th level and haven't gotten access to magical weapons by that point, your DM is screwing your party over.
