    Do you teach english online.?
    If so how did you get started?

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  3 года назад

      Hi! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video! Yes, we do teach English online. As for how I got started, I found VIPKID, applied, and got hired.
      There are 3 ways to teach English online:
      1. through a platform that provides lesson plans and determines your pay rates
      2. through online teacher marketplaces (I call them create-a-profile platforms) where you create your profile, set your own rates, and plan lessons yourself, and students choose from a list of teachers. The platforms take a percentage from each student who enrolls in your class.
      3. Go independent - create your own curriculum, market yourself, and find your own students.
      I have only done the first two options. I actively teach on VIPKID and Langu. I have an open contract with GoGoKid as a backup. There are tons of platforms and I have a blog post about all of them: www.gratefulgypsies.com/best-online-english-teaching-jobs/

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  3 года назад

      Here's the link to all my blog content about teaching English online: www.gratefulgypsies.com/category/teach-esl/teach-esl-online/
      I also have a free masterclass that shows you the steps to take to teach English online and become a full-time traveler: www.gratefulgypsies.com/free-masterclass-registration/
      All the platforms have their own requirements but one almost universal requirement is a TEFL certificate. More info about that in the next comment....

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  3 года назад

      There are two TEFL course providers that I recommend; BridgeTEFL and myTEFL. I got my TEFL certificate with Bridge and highly recommend them. They have the core TEFL courses of 40, 60, 100, and 120 hours of training and they also have specialized courses for specific niches of teaching like teaching English online and Business English. Here is my microsite where you can see all the options: www2.bridge.edu/gratefulgypsies-tefl You'll be assigned a tutor to help you out. You're given 3 months to complete the course and you can add extra time if needed.

    Love this video! We're from Denver Colorado and have a condo en Zona Romantica Puerto Vallarta that we bought September 2019. This is one of the best videos I've seen on RUclips about PV - really captured beautifully and accurately how wonderful the city and people of PV really are. Thanks so much for the helpful tips and observations! I agree - PV is a cool town with so much to do. A quick fun story: my wife and I were at a beachfront restaurant called El Dorado, just south of Playa Los Muertos pier. A huge monsoon-like rain storm came up in the late afternoon and into the evening. We were "stuck" for a couple hours, not dressed for inclement weather, and without umbrellas. The staff noticed our predicament, and without any requests or prompting for us, they produced *three* umbrellas. We were just two people - why three? It slowly dawned on us -- one of the waiters was going to escort us, through the driving rain and wind, up the hill 3 more blocks, to our condo. We couldn’t believe it! This guy was so nice, getting soaked despite the umbrellas, uncomplaining, cheerful. It was very much a splendid reflection on the kind & thoughtful people of Mexico. (Although not asked, of course we tipped him well!)

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the kind words and the awesome story! The people here really are amazing. We go back to the same few places every time we return, and year after year the staff remembers us. The guys at Coco Tropical especially, as our margaritas always seem extra strong there! We've been all over Mexico and have tried out living in a few other spots, but nothing beats PV. It's the only place we'd really consider if we were to move to Mexico full time.

High season is expensive and crowded here, so we take that time to do our nomad thing... we travel, visit family, see concerts. I LOVE your guys's videos and podcasts I have heard! Thank you for releasing these! We are moving to Mexico for 6 months to a year in October (but we are flexible and could come in September and we would like to sign for 6 months but could do a year if need be). Do you think we will have trouble finding a place for 6 months if we come in October? I saw that you said in a video that many properties are booked for the high season. Do you have any thoughts on if we should come in September vs. October and if we can expect there to be rental properties available then? We are looking for a house in the neighborhoods--we aren't interested in the high rise condos--but we do need to be able to have good wifi. Thanks so much!

      First of all, thanks for your kind words! We've had a lot of fun being on podcasts and have thought about starting our own one of these days. In regards to September vs. October, the weather can be pretty awful in both months. It's super hot and humid and it pours rain all the time. There's a reason it's the low, low season... We've done it before but wouldn't exactly recommend it. But on the bright side, it's definitely easier to snag a place in September. If you go sometime in October and get an Airbnb for a week or two, it shouldn't be that hard to find a place, especially if you're looking for 6 months. It can be a bit harder to find short-term places for less than that. Feel free to reach out anytime if you have any questions. We'll hopefully be back at some point this year, too!

In your experience, is it pretty easy to find a place with fast internet? Like you guys, my job involves video conferencing with clients (via telehealth) for 6 or so hours a day. I'm totally willing to pay to upgrade or have fiber installed. We'd love to connect if we're overlapping in PV at the same time, and think you'd rock a podcast :).

    Great video guys! Can I ask how much you paid for your apt? I keep comparing Thailand to PV and it looks like you get less for more in PV? In TH it's easy & common to find a $500 modern condo with A/C, nice furniture, pool + gym in building & approx $50 monthly electric vs ++ in PV?? In PV it appears $500 gets an older looking apt with odd furnishings, expensive electric + $50 more for an off site gym membership? Other than that PV looks like a very lovely place.

      Nowhere in the world compares to the cost of living in Southeast Asia. However, at least for Americans and lots of other nationalities, we get 6 months on arrival in Mexico as opposed to only one month in Thailand. Factor in the cost of long-term visas or visa runs in Thailand plus the difference in travel time to get home (for us, anyway) it's about the same. It's all relative. Our first apartment here was in a residential, local neighborhood about a 20-minute bus ride away from downtown and it was $200 per month but we had to deal with a ditzy landlady who didn't pay the internet or electricity bill on two different occasions. Now we live within a 10-minute walk of downtown and the Malecon but we pay around $800 per month (in low season, it's more in high season) that is fully furnished with internet and weekly cleaning and we don't have any issues with our landlords. Keep in mind that this is a popular tourist destination that a lot of people want to retire in. You won't find many high-rise condo buildings complete with a gym here as you will in Thailand. It's illegal to build buildings taller than the church.

    So talk about how long does Mexico allow Americans to live or extended stay beyond what Mexico law allows foreigner. Did you have to get permission, what kind of visa are you currently using to stay in Mexico?

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  5 лет назад +3

      Mexico allows Americans and most other nationalities to stay for 6 months without a visa. You would need to get a visa or residency if you wanted to stay longer than that. We can only stay in our place here for 6 months of the year so that works out fine for us. Your time in the country resets every time you go out and come back. So if we go back to the States for a week, we get 6 more months when we come back to Mexico.

Since we moved to a much nicer place, we've been paying around $800/month. Keep in mind we stay here in "low season" when prices are much lower. Will be there in January, any vegan restaurants?

    • @gratefulgnomads

      Some places with vegetarian/vegan food that we like are Planeta Vegetariano and the Green Place. There are quite a few others as well!

      @@luyzqint3760 I'm from Puerto Vallarta. And even thought that's my hometown i have lived in other places like Cozumel, California, Arizona and Alaska.
      If your planning on moving to any part of Mexico i would suggest to live where you can benefit the most in your job or profession. There's a big difference between Guanajuato an Puerto Vallarta. For example lots of people in PV that speak English, there's beaches, and there's Pueblos Magicos just outside of PV. Also the Ocean in Cancun looks different than the one in PV. Cancun has the Caribbean Sea while in PV its the Pacific. But in all cases each one has its own beauty.

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  5 лет назад +1

      Yes, Sasha did get a root canal and I got a crown. The root canal was about $550 USD and my crown was $300.

      My wife Karina contreras is an oral surgeon in PV. Her cost is $350 cdn for a root canal and $350cdn for a porcelain crown. You'll find her on Google maps. All work warranted and her English is perfect.

    How much and how did you find your current place?

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  4 года назад

      We found it through Airbnb. They have different prices for low and high season and based on length of stay. We have a blog post about finding quality rentals in PV: www.gratefulgypsies.com/long-term-rentals-puerto-vallarta/

    you didnt mention how much you are paying for the 2nd place for the 6 months

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  4 года назад

      Sorry we thought we mentioned that! We have paid around $800 per month for that place on a 6-month agreement. Keep in mind this is during the low season. Places cost a lot more in the nicer months, especially if you only book for a few weeks to a month.

    Hows the internet is it fast? Is it included in the rent ?

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  3 года назад +1

      There is fiber optic available in many areas now, so the internet is generally quite good here. It's been included in the rent in all 3 places we've lived here so far. Hope that helps!

      We have fiber optic coming into our condo and the speed (checked on speedtest.net) averages around 90 Mbps. I've been on many remote video calls with colleagues in the U.S. and never had a connectivity issue. I heard from a friend in another part of Mexico saying that he had difficulty with reliable service. But it seems pretty good in PV.

    I wanted to settle in Mexico, can you guide me

    • @gratefulgnomads
      @gratefulgnomads  5 лет назад +1

      We're happy to give you some advice but we haven't actually settled ourselves. We spend 4-6 months of the year here and travel elsewhere for the rest of the year. My first piece of advice would be to make a list of places you might like to live and take a trip to check it out and see how you like it. :)
