This is awesome! We are wanting to retire in Italy. We even started our channel to document the process. I love hearing other people’s stories and how they accomplished their dreams. We’re in our mid 50s. Good luck and thank you for sharing!

I don't know why RUclips recommended your channel, but I was so excited to hear from Americans who also moved to Puerto Vallarta. I moved there in 1993 following a vacation, and I just knew I had to go back. I got a job as an OPC at the Villa del Palmar, which is where I stayed on vacation. At first I lived in a charming, gated apartment building near the marina. Then, after having my apartment broken into twice, I moved to the whole other side of town near the Zona Romantica on a street called Calle Jacarandas off of Basilio Badillo. It was the most fantastic apartment, high up on a hill, backing up to the jungle with a full view of the entire bay, including the Sleeping Lady mountain to the north. It was HUGE, and every unit except the owner's penthouse (which I was just below) has a small swimming pool on a private balcony. If you haven't gone over that way and tried Marisma's street tacos, you simply must. It's on Naranjo at Venustiano Carranza. You will not be sorry, I promise you. I live in Redondo Beach, California, now, which I chose because it reminds me so much of Vallarta. I would so love to go back someday to visit and bring my husband so he can see where I lived, but I'm really afraid of how it will feel to me compared to how rustic and genuinely Mexican it was 20+ years ago. Back then, the biggest grocery and department store was Gigante. Now there's a Walmart and a Sam's Club ― yuck. Krispy Creme? Starbucks? No thanks. And an Office Max? What the heck? At least Señor Frog's is still there! LOL Thanks for the tour of your lovely apartment!
Hola! Thanks for watching and commenting! Sounds like you enjoyed Vallarta as much as we are enjoying it now. We, too, love the old Mexico feel which is why we live in the neighborhood. (Even though we are living in a very modern apartment). We will do a walking tour of our area soon, so people can get a feel for it. Those stores you mentioned are mostly up north near the hotel zone...too much like the states for our tastes. There are two Starbucks near the malecón but we go to the local stores.
I just flew back from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and it is beautiful. I love the beaches there and the new condos are magnificent. It was my first time in P. V. and so relaxing, and the food is to die for all I can say everything is fresh I also went to Mexico City and Guadalajara back in the fall of this year. I have not been to both cities since 1980 when I was 24 years old. I had gone with a couple of buddies who had family in both cities. I only have family in California and Texas. I could not believe how much Mexico City and Guadalajara has grown in over 40 years. Especially Guadalajara, it is considered the Silicon Valley of Mexico and the homes there are just amazing with beautiful greenery. In 1980 there were no high-rise buildings there. But now they are everywhere. I had seen a Penthouse that they were selling there on the 40 or 50th floor the views were amazing. My neighbor and his wife just got back from a 7-day Mexican cruise, and he loved Mazatlan. That will be my next stop next year.
@@thomasfranco5997 I’m so glad you enjoyed Puerto Vallarta. It’s an amazing place for sure. 👍🏻 Thanks for being here. Any suggestions for future videos?
Transplanted Californian, living in Akron, Ohio. I lived in Morelia for almost 1 year just after graduation from high school. That was soooo good for my spanish and confidence with the language. Once you learn a lot of words, then you can construct sentences around them. Also learn, popular words of the area like: andale, que barbadad, apudade, ejohley...i may not spell the word right but it sounds good in a sentence. In Spain, add "vale" at the end of your sentences. Like is Mexico they might day " pues" or " ojala"...when forming a sentence, or just pausing during a conversation. Dont give up on your Spanish, as you can tell im still learning. I actually can tell a joke in Spanish and get a nice reaction. I do like in Spain where they use the Vosotros form of verbs. I dont like it in U.S schools where they didnt teach me that form.

Hola! Thanks for watching and commenting. How fun is that, living in Mazatlán. Do you live there year round? We are coming to visit for one day on a cruise in November to see the city. Any suggestions?
@@RetiredLifeMexico Hola! Well since you live near the beach anyway, I would probably check out Plazuela Machado. There are great food options and cool little ice cream shops ect. But you could do that going over to Stone island as well! Its a beautiful beach on the other side of Mazatlan and from the port and wouldn't take long to get there. Since you have to take a boat over which is like 5 mins. You could lounge and enjoy the beach. Or you could take a pulmonia (open air taxi) and get a tour. Most will do a tour for a decent price! I think that would be fabulous and you could see a lot of Mazatlan! We only get to visit a couple times a year as we are not retired quite yet. Still have a kid graduating in 2025. Yay! Haha. We don't live in any of the tourist areas. It's perfect for us! I hope you have a wonderful Cruise! We won't be there until Dec. Take care!
Thanks for your quick response! We're excited to visit Mazatlán. I think we'll try and do a tour via pulmonía and see as much as we can. Enjoy your last year with the kiddo. They grow up so fast!
I'm having difficulty not saying that you are being over charged however prices are subjective. So as long as you are satisfied, comfortable and safe that is all that should matter. I will be following your channel. I really enjoyed this video.
Hola! Thanks for watching and commenting! It's ok for you to say you think we are overpaying and being overcharged. But like you stated, price is subjective and we do feel safe and comfortable here. We hear stories of others who pay a lot less than we do and they also give up some of our comforts, ie. air-conditioning, washer-dryer, and a decent kitchen. Also, location, location, location. We are paying for that as well. We're planning on doing some videos of other rentals in the different neighborhoods. Stay tuned! Enjoy your day :)
Great video. Three winters ago I lived in Mexico City and really enjoyed it, as it was half the prices of the coastal areas. If I was going to live in Mexico near the Ocean I would go to Puerto Vallarta. I am in Europe these past few years as I prefer a drier climate. I understand your Temecula comment 😅 as I had a good friend living there. You are in an excellent area for expats.
Glad to hear that you like Mexico! We love it here, but you are right, the coast gets really hot during the summer. We will be checking out other inland cities next summer for sure. Thanks for watching and commenting! Buen día :)
Are there any problems down there due to the US deportaions? What is crime rate in general in PV? Can single person live on $1,500 per month w/out scrimping & suffering. VERY interested. THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO & INFORMATION. BTW, the vid of Barbro was interesting as well. Do you guys live near each other. Thx again 😊❤
So far we feel very safe living here and no problems due to the US deportations at this time. There is some petty crime, like pick-pockets/purse snatching as in any tourist town...we're recording a video this week about that as a matter-of-fact. One could live on $1500 usd a month but you have to get your residency first...that might be an issue. Did you see our recent video about that? We live close to each other as it is a 15-20 minute bus ride through town (10 pesos). Otherwise we meet up in town and walk all over the place! Thanks for being here!
Thank you so much for posting this. I learned a lot. You gave me hope i maybe able to retire in one of the States in Mexico. You both are awesome couple. Looking forward to watching future video.
Hello 🤗, New subscriber here. So glad you're enjoying Puerto Vallarta, my daughter and I spent a week there its beautiful. It was barely wheelchair accessible, most of the time we had to stay in the streets because of the side walks didn't have the cut outs. we were able to go fishing because the captain had extra help to carry me on/off the boat ⛵.
You are right about that. The sidewalks are very difficult to manage, even if you don't use a wheelchair. I am glad you were able to go fishing at least! And the malecón is sort of smooth. Thanks for watching and subscribing. We appreciate you :)
Ha ha, I lived in a rental A-frame out in the woods for a couple of years. Every once in awhile when showering I'd get a nice electrical wake-up.....that was crazy scary as hell!
I rented an apartment by the River Cuales there that had a "Suicide Shower" with absolutely NO water pressure! It also had one of those long keys that are more like a screwdriver than a key, half the time I had to leave that door unlocked because didn't want to spend the night outside on the street! LOL I lied and gave the place a decent review on Airbnb. After that I was like just spend the extra money and treat yourself to nice living arrangements. I like your apartment but I kind of agree with some of the viewers that $1500 seems a little high. But what matters is that the two of you are happy not what other people think. When I move to Mexico permanently and if I decide to live in Puerto Vallarta, I will look up your realtor. Thanks
Isn't it interesting the different places one can rent? I think we've decided to spend a little more and be comfortable. Also, there are so many youtubers who like to point out the really inexpensive places you can find, if you are willing to give up some things, ie. air conditioning, washer-dryer, mosquito screening, etc. We're past living like we can't afford a little better. And, yes, our realtor is the best! Thanks for watching and commenting. Enjoy your day!

Hola, thanks for watching and subscribing! You sound like someone who lives as we do...near the beautiful areas, but not so much in the tourist zones. Enjoy your day!
Thanks for watching! We pay via bank transfer. Some landlords have accounts where youl directly send funds from your US bank to theirs, others have it so you go to the bank and deposit money into their account through the ATM. Others require cash every month. Still others want you to pay the entire 6 months, or year, or whatever you have agreed upon up front! We are able to pay through our bank automatically every month.
Rents in PV are definitely going up. It is kond of funny you mentioned Temecula, I used to live there as well. I liked Temecula, but it was too expensive for me so I moved north to Riverside.

This year we are planning to go to Baja California Mexico n staying in La Paz. My husband n I are Spanish speaking, from Puerto Rico, but he’s been listening to the news showing crime in n is afraid of going to Mexico. So maybe we’ll try PV in 2026( Jan, Feb, n March).
That will be nice to visit La Paz. Lots of opportunity for swimming there according to our friends who visited last year. It's great that you speak Spanish, it's so fun to be able to talk to the people who live here. The news does focus on the bad stuff in Mexico...but that's like focusing on the bad stuff in Chicago. Our sons attended med school in Chicago and we visited them often. I never felt scared there, as long as I didn't walk around at night, etc. Same goes for our neighborhood in Puerto Vallarta. I hope you enjoy your time in La Paz. I would be interested in hearing how it goes! Enjoy :)
When choosing an Airbnb stay do you look for rock bottom nightly prices ? If so, you get what you are paying for . As an Airbnb owner in PV , my listing is rather lux yet very price competitive. . You just need to look at the listing pages better .
Hola, thanks for watching and commenting. We have since learned to read the listing pages better, that's for sure. We also rely heavily on the comments from past visitors, however, they tend to be overstated due to the Airbnb rules. Pictures are important as well. Hi! The year-round temperature here in Puerto Vallarta is warm enough that we don't need any heating system. Other parts of Mexico do require it in the winter. I have an Air Fryer that substitutes for an oven...takes some getting used to, but I don't bake anything huge, so not a problem. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Hola! I am referencing the Emiliano Zapata market...which has La California fresh fruits/vegeys and Norma's across the street is called Baca. There are also fresh meats/poultry, etc in the market. Two tortillerias and another fresh fruit/vegey store on the corner! It is a wonderful place...all of it right there!
Vallarta that is now considered the most expensive place for rents in Latin America. We live 1/2 & 1/2 in Canada and PV. Many things are now more expensive in PV then Québec city. I know of many who will not return
Hola. Thanks for watching and commenting. That's an interesting statistic. Which part of Puerto Vallarta do you live in? We sure see a lot of Canadians and other snow birds around and about. Where might the others go instead of Puerto Vallarta?
Never been there but it must be nice . Obviously living in one country for six months and then six months in another will end up being expensive as every six months you are buying plane tickets and are maintaining 2 different homes all year long . The math will never work with the six months here six months there routine but maybe worth it for some to avoid the brutal winters
Yes, there are trade-offs for everything. I hear those winters can be brutal. The math may not make sense but some people are certainly doing it. We have met several who are only paying for the six months they are here, not all year. They worked it out years ago. Thanks for watching and commenting. Enjoy your day!

electrical wires in the shower? How do you make sure you don't get an Airbnb with that? Oh my goodness Puerto Vallarta does not sound as easy as some other places is it because it is such a touristy area maybe?
Yes, we have stayed at a lot of Airbnbs and some are nicer than others. You can see pictures of the places on the Airbnb website. I don't think Puerto Vallarta is any different than most places. One just has to be sure to do your due diligence when searching for accommodations.
I wonder if anyone that retireds in Mexico . Do anyone move to small towns ? Not Your regular places where people go . I know rent can be way cheaper is smaller towns .

Let us know what you find :) Enjoy your day!
Sounds like you guys have been really, REALLY gringo-priced, even for PV. This is bad, because this raises the prices for everyone else in PV, even the locals who most certainly could not afford USD$1500-2500/month. I really do wish people haggle more and insist on local prices for that reason. On the positive side, I just stumbled on your channel and quite liked it, so far. Subscribing

Hola, thanks for watching and commenting. Yes, the 1500 includes internet, water, gas and building maintenance. We pay extra for electricity averaging $20 usd a month. It gets charged every two months, so we will see how it has changed with our use of air conditioning this past month. No need for ac come November though! It really depends on the neighborhood so we are going to do some neighborhood tours in the future to check them out! Have you been to PV before?
@@RetiredLifeMexico Thanks for the info. Since it can be really hot and humid, approximately how much does your electricity run you per month? I only ask because we are also considering Merida Mexico and I know it is extremely hot there as well and I heard that your electricity bill can go pretty high. Just trying to create our budget for living in Mexico. Thanks again for the video.
It's really like comparing apples and oranges and we have not been to Merida in yet as we also have heard that it is really hot in the summer. Yes, it is hot and humid here in the summer but it really depends on the neighborhood you live in because they charge the electricity rate based on usage and zones. For example, we understand that in the hotel zone it can be very expensive. We have been paying less than 20 usd a month before the summer heat. We have been back in Vallarta since September 5 and it has been really hot and humid so we've been using ac every day and night. When we get our bill we will see how much it has gone up! They say it is based on an average amount of usage over the year to determine your rate. We'll let you know!
A big reason for not overpaying on rent and helping to gentrify the neighborhood is the devastating effect it has on the indigenous community living on $6 a day. It’s driving prices up so high that they can’t afford to live in their own town(s). ✨ Please avoid contributing to the problem if you can ✨
Thanks for watching and commenting. It is a big issue here for sure. I think there is a fine line between the good and the bad aspects of us foreigners coming to Mexico and spending our money here. We spend more money on rent and spend more money in the local economy as well. Enjoy your day!

Have you ever considered Bucerias? I don’t live there but have visited several times. It’s just as beautiful, quieter, and is way less touristy with a much more community feel and, the streets are way safer to navigate.
We have visited Bucerias and have a different take. When you visit do you stay on the beach side or the mountain side? We stayed on the beach side and rarely heard any Spanish due to all of the tourists. It is pretty and the sidewalks are easier to navigate, but too many tourists for our taste. @@RetiredLifeMexico we stay with friends who have a house on the beach side but have explored the upper east side as well. This year we are staying across the highway.
LOL
Thanks for the tour of your lovely apartment!
Great tips! Thanks for sharing ❤️

Great video! Thanks for sharing! We have a home in Mazatlan, in a completely local neighborhood! We are working on our Spanish. That's a must. Take care!
Buen día :)

BTW, the vid of Barbro was interesting as well. Do you guys live near each other. Thx again

How do you pay your rent if you don’t have a bank account? Love your videos.

@@RetiredLifeMexico we retired 2 years ago n planned on SNOWBIRDING (2-3 months) to get away from the cold( we are in suburb outside of Chicago, Il).
I went to PV many years ago. Wanted to return, but as you mentioned it is so hard to find an an Airbnb that’s decent n also in a walkable and safe neighborhood, as we can’t afford a car rental for 2-3 months.
We don't look for the cheapest rental because we really need a kitchen and the location is important. I would love to see your Airbnb if you'd be willing to show it to us. We can do a video tour!
Is there a site where there are photos of the Airbnb or no? I am brand new to learning everything. Sorry for all the questions.
Yes, on the Airbnb website and/or the app. Lots of information to sift through there. Be sure to read the reviews from other visitors.

Hi just watching your video. I am from the UK London. Our do you manage without a oven. Dose it get very cold there. What about heating.

Thanks for this video. We r considering PV for retirement. Question, does the $1500 include utilities and/or internet?
Thanks again for the video.
lol just saw I had to hit the “read more” button to read your entire response. Thanks for the info 😃
@@RetiredLifeMexico to answer your question, yes we were in PV last October. This time we want to see more of PV than just the touristy areas.
Please be safe
Thanks for watching and commenting! We try to stay safe...you, too!
Hello…coincidentally, I live in Temecula and I’m considering moving to Mexico. Is it possible for you to DM Fred’s contact info to me? Also, how difficult do you think it would be to find lodging with my 2 cats?

I don't think it is too difficult to find a place that accepts pets. Good luck with the search. We love it here! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
I have a house in Arizona globe I pay 500 dollars for a house I'm buying two bedroom one bathroom and I'm buying my home
Where is your house? I'd be interested in seeing where that is. Thanks for watching :)
Have you ever considered Bucerias? I don’t live there but have visited several times. It’s just as beautiful, quieter,
and is way less touristy with a much more community feel and, the streets are way safer to navigate.
We have visited Bucerias and have a different take. When you visit do you stay on the beach side or the mountain side? We stayed on the beach side and rarely heard any Spanish due to all of the tourists. It is pretty and the sidewalks are easier to navigate, but too many tourists for our taste. Thanks for watching and commenting. I appreciate your perspective. Enjoy your day!
@@RetiredLifeMexico we stay with friends who have a house on the beach side but have explored the upper east side as well. This year we are staying across the highway. Yes, it can be touristy (usually only the ocean side and Centro though) but I think that can be said for a lot of places during high season.
You are right about that. We don't go to the touristy spots much here during the high season either. So far we are enjoying the community we are building here in Vallarta, but who knows. Maybe in the future we will look more into Bucerias. What do you do during your stay when in Bucerias?
@@RetiredLifeMexico we are farmers in Saskatchewan Canada so only go for a 2 week holiday. We’ve been on walking food tours, go to markets, take the local bus to La Cruz and Sayulita, go on hikes, walk the beach and look for seaglass.
That's wonderful! It is so fun to be able to visit for a couple of weeks and be on holiday. As people who are living here, we are not on holiday so we have really worked on finding friends and community to bond with. It's a different take on enjoying Mexico. Thanks again for commenting. Have you visited Puerto Vallarta? We finally were able to get our relatives who love Bucerias to come visit us last time they were here! They said they enjoyed it. :)
“The Mexicans” are in Mexico you are in their country
You’re right about that!
Nice place! Would be 3-4K in SD
Does the church have hourly chimes?
Nice view
Exactly! Thanks for watching :) Qué tengas un buen día amiga!

Good luck on your search! Keep us posted if you move here :)
holy cow, paying that much, both you and the landlords are doing the locals a disservice. Way over priced, taking advantage of the Gringos. I've seen apartments literally on the beach with the ocean in view right out the window, literally on the water 100 feet from the shore for under $600. Just insane, and yes, also furnished, that's normal. Otherwise thanks for the video, I'll take a sponge bath over that shower!
@@Pete-c9i hi there. So of course we’re going to disagree with your comment but I would really like to know where you find an apartment like you describe here in Vallarta. I’d love to see it.
@RetiredLifeMexico not about agreeing or disagreeing, it's just what it is. Puerta is a touristy area, but even I seen videos of a lady who lived up the road in the mountains, from what I remember definitely under 1k and much nicer. Here is a link to a lady who has better integrated with the locals and haven't been taken advantage of by crappy landlords (lake chapala) m.ruclips.net/user/results?sp=mAEA&search_query=i+pay+%24460%2Fmonth+to+live+by+a+lake+in+mexico feel free to please read the comments in the video; what i said ealier wasn't an attack, its just a fact. If I can find the beach front apt for $550 again I'll send it. Otherwise only one's benefitting the most from you is the landlords who don't care about you or their own people. Good luck.
