  • For Sunday's "60 Minutes," Oprah Winfrey traveled to Milwaukee, where she grew up, to learn about a revolutionary approach in the city to childhood trauma. She spoke to Dr. Bruce Perry, the world's leading expert on early trauma who has treated survivors of high-profile events like the Columbine shooting. Winfrey joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss why the question should shift from "What's wrong with that child?" to "What happened to that child?"

I wish that she had included more about how even with great mental health help, it's not like you can erase all the effects. You can get help and have your symptoms improve, but that doesn't mean all those symptoms go away completely. As an adult survivor of childhood trauma, I acknowledge the effects it still has in my life even with lots of professional help. I wish there was more support and help because it is a handicap, but it's not recognized as one. Instead, it's seen as a direct reflection on my value as a person. If someone hears I suffer with mental health issues due to childhood trauma, they just get uncomfortable and look at me like a pariah. You wouldn't do that to someone who had a physical handicap. Not to mention how expensive getting help is

Childhood developmental trauma impacts how our brains and bodies physically develop. In my late twenties I would up having such severe health issues i became legally handicapped, and doctors couldn't figure out why. It wasn't until I saw a specialist gastroenterologist who told me that I was living with debilitating ptsd that was impacting my digestion, nutritional absorption, hormones, sleep, and overall health. I didn't believe it at first bc I was high achieving - how could that be the diagnosis? After reading several books and the research on the topic as well as working with trauma specialists for a couple years, I now know that early childhood trauma takes many forms and can seriously impact how the body develops and functions later in life. Hearing Oprah talk about this gave me all the feels. In case sharing my story in this comment is helpful, there is now a lot of new research on this topic now. I recommend reading about the large ACE study on children with dev trauma, and personally find reading books on complex ptsd by people like Pete Walker or books like 'the body keeps score' Dr Bessel van der kolk helpful. ❤️

All well and good be a dancing Emoji in an in-house CBS News interview promoting an upcoming broadcast.
It’s a very different thing coming out publicly against a Republican President whom you have previously promoted on the OWN network, along with his family. As President, in his Tweeting, Trump has called out Oprah for being meek and too demure to embrace the call to run for President. And he has a point - in that the traumatic (and permanent, it now appears - as some of these dark-skinned asylum-seeking children have now been shunted off to De Vos family adoption agencies, per the latest reports) enforced separation of children from their mothers is not something Oprah has been willing to step up and oppose with the force and authority with which she can, and can still. I want to see her do that.
This country cries out for her to do JUST that!!!

I hope Oprah reads the books and works of Alice Miller, who coined the term "witness" in a child's life can make the difference to a child of trauma. She fought for no spanking of our children worldwide. One book is called, For Your Own Good. Unfortunately the US still allows corporal punishments in our school systems! And we condone spanking in families. It truly is a violent act that has lasting effects. Thank you Oprah for all that you will do with this info. Trauma IS the beginning of dysfunction, changing our brains very early on. And it is generational as trauma parents then raise children with trauma. Education is the only way out of this cycle, along with much compassion.

It is so good to hear someone speak of the perils of spanking. I am temporarily living in North Carolina....it is so common to hear co-workers mention "whooping, beating" their children for the slightest infraction. I gently suggest appealing to a child's intellect --develop critical thinking skills. I marvel that they keep beating their children because they misbehave in school over and over again. Obviously, beating isn't working! I am kinda surprised that Oprah never connected the perils of abuse to a young developing brain..sometimes her late revelations puzzle me...

Yes Yes Yes....therapist have been aware of this reality for many years....but not enough years. Sadly, especially working with children, there are so many factors that seem resistant or not possible to bring about effective change--as a therapist alone. It is multi-faceted. The younger a person is that experiences the chaos the more entrenched the trauma with result of so many problems as an adult. But if there is some kind of refuge...as you said, school....something, some person, that is an anchor...makes all the difference. Thank you Oprah. Now I need to find that 60 minutes episode. Yes, I'm an LCSW.

I wish this was common knowledge when I was a child in the 90s & 00s. I'm still struggling to find the help I need and I'm 29 and I feel so disempowered by my unaddressed trauma. Therapists LITERALLY asked me what's wrong with you back in 2004/2005. Between that and my mom trying to have me exorcised I just learned to go numb and suppress everything and now I'm failing at life. More people would be sympathetic to a 14/15 yr old than a 29yr old who can barely take care of themselves...

I so agree with this. Who we are as adults (not always, but many times) is a direct connection to how we were raised and experiences we had as children. For many years I had guilt that I didn't have trauma as a child because I couldn't/can't relate to people who are shy, anger issues, mood issues, etc., and that because I don't have those personality issues I am seen as vain or "uppity" We all have our story, they aren't all the same and that is okay.

Oprah there's more. We are innate proprioceptive beings. The trauma guilds us away from our sensitivities into our thinking/rationalizing minds which LOOP. Then when we are not honored as children and instead ENTRAINED by parents, teachers, doctors,..etc. that THEY KNOW what is best "for us"...we become FURTHER in seperation from our OWN INNATE CHANNEL to our obedient mind and instead become dogmatically trained. Excited to see this special...LOVE all that you do.

I think most people grew up with some trauma or another--human life is fairly chaotic and difficult. If there is anything I think that is problematic, it is the assumption that life ought to be perfect when it isn't, not for anyone. Even when you don't have trauma, people have holes within because of the existential nature of life.

I just saw a report on children growing up in China, where there are multiple generations of separation and hardship. For example the great-great grandparents went through the civil war, great grand parents experienced the revolution, the grandparents had the one child plan that devalued girls and ripped families apart and the current rural generation aren't allowed to take their children with them into the cities creating poverty, separation anxiety and resentful grandparents and caretakers. The authorities stated how can there be a loving family life, well educated children and citizens who contribute to their communities when there is childhood trauma reaching back five generations! The trauma produced people who are mentally and emotionally stagnated and unable to deal with everyday living situations. These same traumatized people will become the future criminals, psychiatric patients and unemployed! People want to know what is wrong with many communities! Stop blaming unwed mothers and look at what is happening in these neighborhoods! Yes, it is good for children to grow up in nuclear families, but time and time again, successful children usually have one or two people who have invested heavily in them.

The culture of this society would have to change in that people see childhood trauma as something to keep silent about. Or that it shouldn't have any impact on one's ability to live life as an adult. There is no connection at all Or "SO WHAT! IT HAPPENED A LONG TIME AGO. SUCK IT UP AND MOVE ON WITH YOUR LIFE". There's an apathy, indifference and invalidation of it through cultural messages received every day.

Enough of the president chatter stick to what the topic is about...I was a child of many abuses and this makes sense to me . I'm 43 years old now and wished I had this understanding of why I had this inconsistent behavior in my life..instead it's Oprah for president..gimme a break

Great observation re:children who have experienced trauma. Oprah nor any other person without experience in govt should not run for or be President.

I love her too but she will have to take back all the things she has said about Black American children! Now she is realizing why some black children act the way they do! But she chose to support African children over Black American youth in the inn-city!

It’s not called God , gosh, some thinking is too invasive, come on, she said it: it’s called science & studies & experts. Not once was God mentioned.

The concept of childhood trauma affecting your adulthood is not new. I mean does anybody remember the movie Clueless from 1995? The famous line " what's your major childhood trauma?" And no Oprah should not be president nothing about Oprah's presidential. I swear you people obsessed with her. She's just a normal greedy human being. She needs to focus on these kids digging up these minerals for these damn cell phones. If she actually wants to do something to help somebody.

you clearly have not read Perry's book nor do you understand the new science around the neurobiology of trauma. Read and education yourself before spouting off.
