Both of my parents were addicts, then I grew up in foster care from age 5 until 18. I also used to visit my mom in jail. By the time I "aged out" of foster care, both my parents were dead. I had no one. Statistically I should have ended up in jail, addicted, homeless, or dead. I am none of those things. I have a Bachelor's Degree in English & am now working on my second college degree to pursue my dream of being a Veterinary Technician. I'm married and have a beautiful home. I'm healthy and work hard every day to become the person nobody thought I'd ever be. Much love to you and all you've overcome. Resilience is definitely one of the keys. Awesome talk. ✌

Ang Ro Actually you were not destined for the streets or the other things due to your childhood. Yes, it was rough and I feel for you, but the addiction and homelessness you speak of is the result of your brain and body reacting to hands on abuse, not because you were placed in care.

I’m 29. I just discovered what mental illness is last night. The connection I had to it. I went on a scizo binge that lead to homelessness about 6 months ago. Little did I know I was subconsciously chasing my own healing. I was willing to loose everything to just sit and meditate and learn to love myself. All the ways mental health is connected to abuse and know one helped me. Im shocked at the ignorance and unsupport of my family. I’ve asked for help so many times in my life and after 29 years I’m the only one helping me. I learned to love myself more than anyone. I want to live, and to love, and feel unshaken and inspire others. I’m proud of you all who are fighting this on your own. Keep doing that. Hurt people hurt people. But healed people heal people. Peace is closer than we think, we are all worthy of purpose

Mdogg, How are you now ? In life there are only 2 problems--mind and the body. Be careful what you feed your mind. To feel better reduce negative thoughts and overthinking. Avoid comparing with others, reduce negative social media and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed, avoid moving too much and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Never meditate with expectations but with awareness. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Observe your breath sensations before sleep, in college, at work, taking a walk, when reading, etc.etc. Doing public speaking courses will build your confidence. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Best wishes--Counsellor.

"when I open my eyes... the worst of life couldn't take out the best of me, cuz I'm still standing in front of you" I made some bad decisions a long time ago and will be paying for them - monetarily, physically, emotionally, etc - for a long time. When I was incarcerated I saw people at their worst and did everything I could to try to make them smile. I would sing to them, listen when they needed someone to just hear them, and offer whatever words of wisdom I could. This year I made the decision, after searching for a job for over 4 years and not being able to pass a background check, to make a change. I took a course to become a Certified Recovery Peer Advocate and am taking classes to become a Credentialed Alcohol and Substance Abuse Counselor. Hearing your story and seeing what you had to overcome tells me that I made the right choice in this career and will keep what you said in your talk with me to teach people that they can, and will, overcome. Thank you so much!

    WOW...
I've listened to a lot of TEDx Talks, and this one is one of the most real, most valuable monologues I've heard. This man doesn't just share, he teaches. He encourages is a realistic way. He tells it like it is, and doesn't make excuses. He empowers others to learn how to overcome by sharing how he overcame, and he forewarns that it will not be easy, that it may be excrutiatingly painful, and that it is ultimately up to us to use positive self-talk even when we don't believe it ourselves. He reminds us that it is ok to reach out and ask for help.
This is not the happily-ever-after that so many TEDx Talks speakers churn out. This is neither narcissistic, nor "poor me". This is not the extreme bipolar thinking that life's answers are cut and dried, black and white, good and bad. This is about the reality of the shades of gray that lie between the polar extremes. This is real. This is inspiration while remaining grounded in reality. This is encouragement while preparing people to keep in mind that it will not come easy or instantaneously or when you need it to happen.
We should all be so lucky to have a friend, family member, trusted colleague, mentor or advisor who teaches what it means to be resilient, and that you have to believe regardless of how difficult that might be.
This is the opposite the instant-gratification advice that so many people seem to believe and be seeking out.

I could have been great if not better without my trauma but given that it has happened I choose to use it as a springboard rather than a weight.

I don’t usually comment on social media but I want to acknowledge that I shared this video on my work fb with the following thoughts....
I like how Charles Hunt acknowledges the different aspects of ourselves we have from different developmental stages and traumas.
For me, the word ‘victim’ never sat right with me. It can become an identity that we get stuck in, disempowers us.
I like how Charles Hunt uses a past tense rather than a present tense and the significant difference that can have. I was a victim. It opens up so much possible for who we are now. All the healing as well as the potential selves we may become.
I also liked his ending.... ‘thank you for giving my trauma a purpose’. The ultimate recovery, healing and empowerment, turn pain to a positive.
    Thank you Charles Hunt

Charles, you are a remarkable and resilient human being! You articulate the trauma that happened to you with such understanding and pain, and yet such healing. And your healing from it is a gift to us so we can learn from you. Thank you for sharing your message with all of us. You plant seeds under trees you may never sit. I hope that you will continue to speak to what protective factors in your life supported your resilience and how important they were and are in your life and in the lives of our children who face significant adversity. And I hope you continue to talk about how your protective factors help ameliorate and mitigate the risk you faced. Your are such a gift to us. Your message is one of the most important we can teach the world.

Great voice & powerful message! I also suffered great loss as a teenager, losing both my parents by age 15. Yet, here I am working at a high school helping at risk youth. Once they tell me their stories and I mention how resilient their are, their whole demeanor changes. They become empowered! My faith saved me, as well as reading Wayne Dyer and others who helped me realize, that while I don't control what happens to me I do control my reactions. Our thoughts are powerful!

Charles Hunt, I am a high school English teacher in Andover, Massachusetts, and on Thursday, September 13, 2018, our town and two other surrounding towns (North Andover and Lawrence) experienced a horrific gas explosion through the gas lines, homes lost, people injured, and the loss of a young man. We are heartbroken, devastated, but thankful for the kindness, selflessness, caring that was shown by so many, and this continues, as our recovery will take weeks before we return to a sense of normalcy. I am thrilled that we return to school tomorrow, and we are able to be together as a school community. I just want to be with my students, and I am going to show them your TedTalk, you hit the nail on the head, and not only offer your story, but steps to apply resilience to one's life and take the power back -- thank you, you totally rock!!!! If you ever head up to our area, I would love to invite you to speak to our school community, you are a gift, thank you. Also, I took a look at your Audacity Firm page and if you are indeed in North Carolina, I send will keep you and yours in my thoughts and prayers, as you are experiencing floodings and winds from Florence. Continue to focus on strengthening his mind through his beliefs and thoughts as they will have huge implications on how he views his challenges, tells himself about them, and what he ultimately does about them. Continued resilience to you and your family.

@@charleshunt9961 Thank you for responding. It's hard for him to talk about any of this because he thinks it is bad and he's not a good person. It's very hard for him when I talk about his past. He thinks I'm not going to love him or that I might abandon him like his bio parents did. He feels that he has to be perfect to be a good person. China told him that if he didn't behave, I would send him back. If you have any counseling available, I would love to book him an appointment with you. I really fear for his future. He's been attending 3 years of school (all in America) and the district wasted every year. He has so much anxiety that he hasn't learned how to count past 20 and they didn't think he would understand subtraction, so the never started to teach him that. He is 14, thrown in 8th grade and learned nothing. Since covid started, I've got him up to grade 3. He still has trouble reading Braille, but knows the Braille symbols. I know he is smart because I can fly an airplane like a pro.
I hope you would be able to see him. Thank you
